There's a huge assortment of appetizers and they tend to make me full before I dive into the entrees! My favorite appetizers are the Pani Puri shots - crunchy and a pop of saucey flavor! I also loved the Fish Amritsari- it was fried with a nice crust but still so juicy and flakey inside! I love the various dishes, sauces and curries for entrees and it's hard for me to choose my favorite - if I had to, I would choose the Vegetable Biryani because of the nice bread crust on the top and the hot flavorful rice inside! Decided to try some dishes I've never ordered from Benares before. Onion Kulcha (a "bread"): delicious; very full of red onions; oily, as are many Indian breads. Texture was odd (soggy) because I ordered it for delivery; texture might be much better in the store. But I liked it enough to have 2 large slices. Mathura Se /Aloo Tikki: the potato pancakes are always delicious, but I wish the chickpea/sauce weren't so spicy Lasooni lotus root--spice level very mild: Very delicious; a delicious sweet/tangy sauce. I enjoyed the texture of the lotus root, something I never ate before. Beet root halwa dessert: YES, because I love beets. Not as sweet as I feared (most Indian desserts are too sweet for me). Don't order this unless you like beets. Malai Kofta--vegetarian balls which I didn't enjoy in a yellow sauce that I didn't enjoy. I should say "ball" because I didn't enjoy it enough to have the second one; I put it back from my plate into the container. Maybe my husband will like it, but I doubt it. Navratan Korma--definitely NOT what I was expecting. I'm wondering if they substituted a different dish, because I was expecting dried fruits, nuts and vegetables, and I received tofu and vegetables in a yellow sauce that I disliked. I dislike tofu and there was a lot of it in the dish I received. I don't remember tofu being in the description. Note: some of their dishes are available mild, very mild or baby mild, in addition to spicier choices. I chose very mild today and should choose that again. read more

We had a great experience are Benares. We had a hard time finding the restaurant in the shopping center but we're able to find parking easily and didn't have to wait to be seated. Benares landed in my radar screen after I enjoyed a fantastic dinner as part of a Yelp Elite Event. I decided to come back with my peeps for dinner hoping it was everything and more on a typical dinner night. Well it absolutely was!!! We started with pani puri shots which excited me because my peeps - who are big fans of Indian food - had never had them. They loved them, as did I. For dinner we had to try a wide selection of things. We had the Chicken saag (spinach sauce) , Andhra Chicken Curry, chicken tikka masala (Grlled boneless chicken simmered in fenugreek flavored plum tomato sauce), Kekda Kari (Traditional Nadan Kerala style jumbo lump crab curry, simmered in mustard and curry leaves), vegetable biryani (rice and seasoned vegetables in a tandoor pot with a dough cover, cucumber raita, and a bread basket of various flavors of naan. Every single thing was AMAZING. The chicken and crab curries were new to us all and so delicious. All of us had a cup of masala chai. I wanted lassi but I was so full by then I couldn't! This is by far one of the best Indian restaurants around. And it's worth noting that while often I find that the Indian restaurants are skimpy with the amount of protein they put in their dishes,Benares was not at all skimpy. The portions are very generous. Absolutely amazing! Came here on a Wednesday night and the place was already very busy so I'm glad we got there just in time. We brought a bottle of wine and my friend and I settled night for a girls night of delicious food! I was so happy to see so many vegan and vegetarian choices! I didn't know where to look first. We started with samosa and it was amazing light and flaky not greasy at all. I had a veggie korma dish that was delectable. The naan bread was not greasy whatsoever ! The service here is terrible. They simply don't care about customer service. We usually order take out and the food is very good but this time we decided to dine in. They were not attentive and we felt very ignored. It started off with trying to flag someone down to take our order. The servers don't seem to speak English and the one person that did just didn't pay attention. Trying to ask for water or anything was difficult. We had to ask 3 different times what happened to one of our orders and when it came it was at the end of our meal. I think they forget and had to make it after we asked. No update or apology. Our second time here with parents! It's one of our best places when we are in the mood of eating authentic Indian food. I was really amazed by the food and the service at Benares. Our server, Gary, was great at offering advice on dishes and helped us to choose an amazing meal. We started off with Mango Lassi, which was delicious and not overly sweet. We also tried an eggplant appetizer with a yogurt sauce on top. Everything was cooked well, with great flavor that didn't overpower the dish. I tried the tandoori chicken as my main entree and then tried a little bit of everyone else's. The tandoori chicken was so moist, and everyone loved it. Even the dishes that were normally a little too spicey for me, were delicious. For dessert I had their pomegranate rice pudding. This restaurant is my go to spot for Indian food, both dine in & take out (they offer a pre-fixe takeout special too, FYI). The menu offers plenty of options & the flavors here are delicious & complex. Some personal favorites being the Tikka Masala, Korma, Aloo Papri Chaat, Peshwari Naan & Masala Chai Tea (which is basically a hug in a cup). The food is so good and well packaged for takeout/delivery. The Mathura Se is a little sweet and delicious! The chicken tikka masala has some kick to it. The naan is soft yet slightly crispy.
