Mounds customer for over 20 years at Middleton location. Since that closed went to new west location. Open 3 weeks - still not stocked well. Most disturbing is store layout. All of the food is located in the back of the large store. You are forced to walk past all the toys etc. before reaching what you need. Since I have a knee injury I have developed an awareness of the need for more consideration for individuals who have challenges when walking. This store layout did not consider customer needs. Loyal customer program is a scam. They do not honor it. I have been going to mounds for my dog food, treats, and toys for over a year now. They have a customer rewards program where you buy a specific amount of something and get one free so I choose to shop there just for that. I finally got to my free bag of very expensive dog food and when I went in to get the food they tell me that the deal expires if you don't use it right away so I lost out on my free bag. I called around several places to see if they carried Capstar. I didn't think that Mounds had it, but they did and for the best price in town! It was $3-$10 cheaper than other competitors! When I called they were so helpful. When I got to the store, I had no idea where to look (since it was my first time). I walked around for 3 seconds and someone who looked busy stopped what they were doing to ask how they could help me. Even the cashier was super friendly. Ordered online, but chose the wrong location. Realized it immediately and reached out to change the pick-up location. They responded saying they would not change the location AND (just in case I was wondering) wouldn't cancel the order. I drove an extra 30 min each way and picked up the order (so as not to be out $50). I usually use Chewy.com, but thought I buy locally give the impact of COVID on the economy. I had a great customer service experience here. I was beside myself about tick problems I was having with my pup and a kind member of the staff was happy to explain as much as she could. She put my mind at ease with a plan to move forward, got me the right product to help and was genuinely concerned. This is what is hard to find, great customer service. YAY Mounds!! I've gone with my sister to get kitty litter and food here before and I really like this place! For any Chicagoan's who may read this, it is similar to a Petco, but priced like a PetsMart. So they are rather pricey.. My favorite thing about this store was the Adoption Center. They have this great big glass window that you can see all the available kitties they have up for adoption. And they also have a board with pictures and descriptions of available dogs from the local shelters they can bring in. I know PetsMart offers this as well, but it is not nearly as big or clean. :)~ read more

I hate writing something negative about a pet store that I really like. I love the Mounds organization and its dedication to helping homeless animals. The Mounds Dogfest held every year in Sun Prairie is a great event. It's even where I met my dog's breed rescue group which I eventually adopted my dog from. Unfortunately, I have yet to have a pleasant shopping experience at the East Madison Mounds store. I've noticed that the staff people just stand around in aisles together and chit-chat -- I've seen this happen all six times I've been there. Customer service there is lacking. Never once have I been greeted as I enter this store. And the sales associates were always present at the front when I entered. In fact, during my most recent visit, two were standing together, chit-chatting and ignored me. In contrast, my shopping experiences at the Janesville Mounds, Sun Prairie Mounds and Middleton Mounds have been quite the opposite -- the sales associates are helpful and act appreciative that I'm a customer. Like I said, I think this is a wonderful company with wonderful goals. Unfortunately, this one Mounds store has very poor customer service. read more

This is one of the times I really wish I could rate on half-stars. For selection, Mounds gets five stars. This location is not an overwhelmingly huge store like some of the big chain pet stores I've been to, and yet they manage to cram more variety of foods, toys, and supplies than any other store I've been to. I'm trying to switch my cats to a grain-free diet, and while the cats are resisting, Mounds has offered me lots of options! So wonderful. I'm not actually familiar with Mounds as a company, but from the tiny bit of research I've done--and the newsletter they gave me--it looks like they are really working to make a difference in the Madison/Southern Wisconsin area. And for that, they at least deserve thumbs up. That said, this location is a bit hard to navigate. I had to wander through the dog food to find the cat food, and the toys were in a totally random spot. Once I found them, though, I was fine. I think the store could use a bit more lighting or something to make it feel a little less dungeon-like, but it's not like you're running around in the dark or anything, either. As for service, I'm really split. This is where the half-star comes in. While the cashiers have always been friendly while I check out, and the first time I was there I had someone ask if I needed help finding anything (which was the time I didn't, as I was legitimately just wandering around), I've not had any additional offers of help, and the employees I see around the store seem a bit stand-offish. That said, it could just be I was there on a few bad days, as the cashiers were super friendly, so it's not horrible customer service, either. read more

I like Mounds quite a bit. I recently adopted a dog from the humane society and was in need of some high quality pet items. Out of all the stores in town that I checked, Mounds was the only one that carried Froms pet food. They also had the best variety of puzzle toys for dogs to stimulate their mind, as well as, a HUGE selection of rawhide and animal parts. The entire story has a huge selection of different pet products. It definitely has a dark warehouse feel to it, but hey, it's in the title so I'm not sure if I can really complain. Everyone at the store was very helpful, and I was happy with the direction they provided. While it is a little pricier than other stores, you are paying for the great selection. I do think it can be a little better organized, but at least the personnel are friendly enough to direct you toward what you need. If you have a pet, this is the Madison store you should check out. read more

Mounds always has what we need for our girls, two siamese Himalayans who require LID food. It was great to see these were on sale this week. Mostly I want to note that Molly M, the cashier, was really nice. I haven't had any bad experiences, but this mounds is clearly where LaFollette and Monona Grove kids go to work part time after school. Molly was friendly and quick and I was really thrilled by her professional and kind demeanor. I think the other cashiers could take a note from her book. She was so nice :) read more

I came here looking for two things: dog food and a cat tree. I had looked at prices for each online and at other pet supply stores prior to visiting Mounds, and thank goodness I did. Mounds is nothing more than your average pet warehouse store, but much more expensive. I have had very mixed service at the Sun Prairie store. The cashiers are friendly, but they do not go out of their way to do more than simple courteousness. I have spent thousands of dollars there and shopped there mainly because of convenience and selection. I find the place cluttered and not well organized. Things that should be n X-ray to each other like litter boxes and scoops are not. They often move things around and seem to place things randomly. Their store policy seems to be no refunds. They exchange somewhat easily, but don't try to get your money back. We just had that experience with them. That tips it for me. I will no longer shop there. We had the receipt. These were unopened cans purchased within the last three weeks, but they would not refund the money. read more

Customer service includes thanking your customers and helping them in every way to have a great experience in your store. They need to train their young people more in this regard. For example, when you see you have a customer waiting outside for the doors to be unlocked, that's the door you open first, especially when it is cold and rainy. When your customer runs back to get something, you continue to ring up their purchases even if they left part of them on the floor. You are proactively helpful. You are grateful for their business. I have shopped a t Mounds for years. They no longer accept the Humane Society card for 10% off of non food purchases. I will be checking online options and other pet stores in the area. They have a adoption centers at their stores, but they are not honoring the cards after someone makes a donation to The Humane Society. So sad. read more

My dog and I love going to Mounds for different reasons. Marnie loves "cleaning up" spilled treats and dog food from the floor, and I love their great selection of treats, toys, and any pet-related accessory. I load up on dog biscuits from their bulk section on the regular and I can always find affordable animal parts for my dog to chew on (they have everything from pig ears to kangaroo organs). The cashiers also offer your dog a treat (and a Mound bar for the humans) at checkout :) read more

Mounds is the best pet supply store in town. It's more reasonable than the national chains and has a great selection. They even donate their own food to the Dane County Humane Society, which is pretty cool. read more

Awesome store! Had the Acana Ranchlands dog food that I was looking to get Cheppie and PItzie. It's funny b/c the two people who helped me also give their food Acana Ranchlands. I was able to convince two shoppers to change to it also from the crappy food they were giving their dogs. Good prices too. Not the best, but good. read more

I like Mounds pretty well. It's a no-nonsense, warehouse-type store, and they've had a lot of things we've needed over the years, from bulk guinea pig and rabbit supplies for our rescue work, to a wide variety of dog foods when we finally adopted some dogs. They have lots of variety of just about everything pet-related that you could want, from single-source-protein geriatric dog food to bird toys for large parrots. They also emphasize higher end products - it's a good place to pick up Oxbow products, when you get sick of buying the crappy hay they sell in the grocery store. In fact, I don't think they stock much selection of cheap crap, so if you prefer Ol' Roy and Alpo, you might want to shop elsewhere. Best of all, they're very rescue-friendly, in the following ways (at least): * They give discounts to rescues buying for their animals (there is some paperwork we had to do to get this, and it was almost 10 years ago, so I can't swear that it's still set up the same way) * They don't sell ANY animals in the store * They have rescue organizations showing off their animals in there on a regular basis * They give the pound a separate room in each store to showcase different kinds of animals (cats at one location, guinea pigs and rabbits in another, etc.) I *think* their prices are pretty good, though I admit that I haven't shopped around very much. The store seems clean (at least considering that they allow animals to come in), I've never seen any problem merchandise (e.g. moldy food, torn packages), and it's nice to be able to get my water softener salt and propane there, too. The only reservation I have about giving them 5 stars is that they seem to hire a lot of teenagers to run the store, and don't train them well enough. It's usually fine, but if you do anything at all out of the ordinary (like use a rescue discount card), you can expect to have to explain yourself a few times, and possibly wait for a manger to come over. Overall, though, it's a great resource to have for our animals. read more

Mounds has a large selection of pet accessories at good prices. The store is pet friendly and the staff is helpful. The only thing that I don't like is that it is just like a warehouse. The nice thing is to get a Mound's candy bar after your purchase. read more

Don't go to this store! The service is always poor: the people working there are unfriendly, don't know what they are selling, where anything is located, and to top it off you are likely to be overcharged. So if you do go you best check your receipt. Plus they tend to get in your face when questioned about store policy. Sure they have the food I want but I can get it in a different "friendly" store. A little over a week ago, my dog was experiencing some issues. I went to Mounds located off Stoughton rd. I was not greeted when I walked in and was not approached by any of the staff members to see if I needed help, which I did. Every staff member I saw looked like they hated their job and were completely rude. I would start to approach them and they would quickly pretend like they didn't see me and walk away. I couldn't believe how rude these people were. Right as I was at my wits end and ready to just walk out I was approached by a lovely young lady, Kaley. She smiled and looked like she actually liked her job. She asked me what she could help me with and apologized over and over for my earlier experience. I told her what was going on with my dog. She seemed like she generally cared and wanted to help me. She would ask questions and by the end of our conversation she was able to find the right product for my dog plus a few extra toys and treats to make her happy while she was feeling miserable. My dog is now doing better and I have Kaley to thank for that. If I could rate just Kaley as an employee there this would be a five star but because everyone else working there were so rude I have to give this store a two star. This company really needs to hire more employees like Kaley, who are knowledgeable, friendly and actually care about their customers and their companions. If it wasn't for this young lady, Mounds would have lost my business completely. read more
