I have been shopping at Mad Cat for years because I want to buy local and I appreciate their selection of quality food. However, the staff has really gotten out of hand with their superior, critical attitude toward their customers. My vet has made it clear that a certain type of food is not appropriate for my cats and dogs. When I go in and ask about a different kind of food, I get nothing but pushback from staff members telling me that the food in question is totally fine for my pets and my vet is wrong. This is always delivered with a snotty, condescending attitude and even eye-rolling. My son who also has cats gets the same treatment when he goes in to buy food. This literally happened to him again today, which is why I'm finally writing this long-overdue review. I truly do not understand this attitude and it has made us want to stop buying from Mad Cat entirely. It has been going on for years but it's only gotten worse. I didn't ask for their opinion, I'm just trying to give them my money. For them to look down their noses at customers and try to tell them that their Veterinary professionals are wrong is, frankly, absurd. I don't really care what their opinion (note: NOT medical advice) is, I just want to buy the cat food and the dog food that I want to buy. This is a nice store with some good products but, frankly, I don't need to be judged for following my vet's advice. And I don't need to go shopping and give my money to people who look down on me and criticize me for my purchases. I myself going there a couple more times, and then I'm going to be done. I love MadCat. This location has an easy parking lot and a spacious store. There is even a large room up front with some store cats. The store has a great layout making it easy to locate the items you are looking for. I enjoy looking at their dog treat options. They carry a good variety of high quality brands. They also have fun cat toys up by the check out. This time I grabbed a bouncy ball with a few feathers attached. The staff member checking me out said cats enjoy playing with this toy on the stairs and that's exactly what my cats did. It's their new favorite toy. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They greeted my dog with a treat when we walked in. I always enjoy a good pet store, especially MadCat. read more

So today I went in to get tread for my dog who is super picky about toys so I haven't gotten him a new one in a year. It has to be a certain texture or sound otherwise he couldn't care less about it and I explained this to the salesperson so told me, super kindly, that there's a guarantee and if he didn't like it I could bring it back within a certain (long) time. I got home and gave him the toy and he hasn't stopped loving it since. When I pick it up he takes it back immediately by its neck very gingerly and treats it like his baby. Basically thanks for being so helpful and understanding because my cute ass dog now has a second baby to add to his odd collection of toys e treats like sons lol. Madcat is super helpful. read more

Mad Cat is the comfort food of pet supply stores. It's small, cozy, no glaring lights, great music (often loud, but I like it). A friendly-ish cat named Gabby is always providing cat-level customer service. I've never found the human staff to be anything less than awesome. They've gone above and beyond, allowing us to buy a case of Pearl's expensive preferred canned food at a volume discount. When I needed a tiny tag engraved with double-sided info for her collar, they made that work. When I wanted a certain cat toy that wasn't catnip-filled, they spritzed an organic distilled catnip spray on it for me. This is a store that carries quality products, and a fantastic variety given the small space. Pet foods, toys, beds, leashes, treats, basically anything a pet could want or need. This is my go to place for buying food and supplies for my cat. The staff is very knowledgeable and always willing to offer advice and answer any questions that I may have. You can tell the entire staff loves animals and cares about the welfare of our four legged friends. Some may complain about their prices but their products are well worth the money. They carry a broad line of quality food and can recommend what food may be great for your pet. Their cat trees are well made, no random staples jutting out that could hurt kitty. In addition they often are out and about volunteering and participating in the local festivals, which really makes them a part of the community. My go to store for all my pet supplies. The staff here are very helpful and knowledgeable on all their products. On one occasion I was looking into purchasing a window perch for my cat, but wasn't sure it would be able to hold his little fat self up for a long period of time. One of the staff members put a 20lbs cat food bag on the perch for a few hours to assure me that it would hold my 20 pounder. They have a great variety of bins with various dog treats and also have cookies at the counter for special occasions. On my dog's birthday I came in and purchased one of the beer shaped dog cookies and my dog loved it. It smelled really good like a gingerbread cookie unlike similar shaped treats I have seen at other stores that smell like a milk bone. Stop on in and pet their store kitty! I recently got a kitten, and I desperately needed some toys for him. He's almost 4 months old, and I had no idea what to get him. I wanted to get him toys to keep his energetic self stimulated and also start training him where he could scratch and where not to scratch. When I entered the Willy street location, the store was organized into two different sections. On the left side, all the dog food and toys are located. On the right side of the building, the cat food and toys are located there. They have a wide variety of organic foods for your pet needs, and a wide variety of cute collars for both cat and dogs! Two of my favorite things I purchased from MadCat was this spray that smells like cat nip and a toy that is primarily feathers. My kitten goes crazy over the smell of the essential oil spray and starts scratch his post right away! With the toy, he loves how the can put his nails right into the toy without ruining it! It wears him out after 15-20 minutes. The staff is amazing and will help you out with whatever you are looking for your pet! They also have a resident cat there as well. read more

I can't believe I haven't taken the time yet to give five stars to this awesome place. The employees are well-informed and so so helpful, plus they have a great variety of specialty foods, toys, collars, litter, etc. Here are some occasions on which their employees have gone out of their way to help: -One day I was taking my cat back from the vet and his carrier broke. I stopped at Mad Cat to get a new one. My cat had begun running and hiding all over my car. One of their employees came out to my car and helped me nab my cat and get him in the new carrier. -I bought a harness for the same cat one day because I was taking him on a plane. I was going to my father's memorial service and very very stressed out. When I got home, I was in a panic and couldn't get the harness on. I called the store, and their employee calmly talked me through getting the harness on and didn't make me feel at all self-conscious. -I once was hospitalized without warning and couldn't find a friend to feet my cat. They helped me find a professional cat sitter who came to the hospital to get the keys. When I was there last week, they helped me pick out some awesome toys too. Great shop! I visited the other location on Monroe last year and was so happy to find a second location here, right next to the park. I find great stuff here for my pooches. They adore the elk antlers. And we also tried the greenie type chews that are all natural. Prices are fair. The selection is huge for a small shop. It's clean, the staff are friendly and helpful. The staff is friendly and helpful - they aided us while adjusting a new harness - and the store clean and inviting. One downside: it's a small shop so they might not have that one particular brand of treats or doggie conditioner that you're looking for. Shopping at Mad Cat is always a treat. I live in Milwaukee now, and when ever I come back to Madison I ALWAYS have to make a stop here to get my cats some goodies. I love this store and am glad I've finally transitioned to making this my go-to spot! We're going on 5 years with our cat tree we purchased from here, and with a quick vacuum is looks at great and holds up as sturdy as the day we purchased it. The employees and very friendly and have been more than understanding/nice when I come in with my 19 month old who wants to 'help' pick out food....big, bright smiles and always engaging. Pros: Friendly/helpful staff, beautiful cat trees, a wide variety of supplies, cute cat toys, cute store cats, many organic options, etc etc Cons: Not close enough to my house, but oh well. Seriously, I would never go anywhere else for my cat's food. I buy the organic bag for 9.99 and also buy my kitty a toy because they have such a huge selection! (and cheap!) I've also bought a cat tree there and it is the coolest thing ever. It's all black and has 5 layers to it. They delivered the tree to my apartment for free and no hassle! This is a high quality pet shop with good products that aren't super expensive. The store has a very friendly feel to it. The customer service is good and they'll remember you after you go in a couple of times and they always make sure to let you know if there are any specials or deals going on to save you money. They'll give your animals some treats if you bring them in. There is only street parking. They are a small shop, so they may not have a wide selection of items, but they do have a little bit of everything. read more

I LOVE Mad Cat! As an owner of multiple bunnies, I am i constant need of timothy hay, bunny food and bunny litter. (All of my buns are potty trained.) There is literally NOWHERE in Madison that sells bun food other than this place. Additionally, it is a local business and carries a lot of health conscious foods for your special little friends. They keep our fat cats special food on order for us. They sell catnip infused sparkle balls (a true favorite of the spoiled princess). They are always super friendly and helpful, and really, really know their stuff. What else can I say? If there were more than 5 stars, I'd give them as many as possible. Great tip from a staff member on using a yard stick "sweep" to retrieve lost toys from under the couch. Only a true pet lover would know that. read more
