Baked chicken, fried chicken, fried fish, salisbury steak
    April S.

A really special hidden gem off woodland and greenway, on the east side. The kitchen is located on the side of a church and offers more than enough parking in the church parking lot. Absolute amazing down home soul food cookin at an outstanding price. This kitchen is run by volunteers from the Church. I posted pictures of the weekly schedule. On Saturday's they offer breakfast starting at 730 am, lunch begins service at 11:30am. Today they offered baked chicken, fried chicken, fried whiting fish, pork chops and salisbury steak. Meal comes with two sides and corn bread. Additional sides are $2 each but totally worth it. Stay in and eat or take home with you. The dining area seats between 25-30 and a vending machine offers fresh baked desserts or you can purchase a warm dessert on the food line, today peach cobbler was served and it reminded me of granny's. When we arrived, the fried chicken had already run out but we only had to wait for 10 minutes..absolutely fresh, warm and outstanding!! There's just something about fried chicken that warms my soul. Fresh mixed vegetables, the green beans were oh so perfect. Greens on the food line as well, i tried some of my husband's and they were great. Baked mac and cheese. Typically i am not a baked mac n cheese fan but this baked mac and cheese was on point. Still creamy and cheesy in the middle. Fish frys coming as well. Some of the BEST soul food I've had in the city and the money proceeds go to a great cause. The sweet tea is better than Canes..whoaa buddy! Can't beat 3 meals for $21, and you'll be full!!

Theres nothing like some good home cooked southern food! Continuing with the ambiance the atmosphere was something I didn't know I needed as well. It felt almost like home, so clean with a refreshing and smooth vibe. Not to mention the art that decorated the walls, and the track list, whoo we ended our lunch to some Stevie Wonder! And the service! Oh goodness I wish I could remember my servers name for the life of me, but she was a brown skinned women with golden locs and glasses and she was just amazing! She actually pointed me in the direction of the lamb chops and she made great conversation without hovering over the table at the same time! Ugh it's nothing like soul food or black owned, I plan on returning next Sunday and plan to frequent that location much more after that! Thank you Soul 2 Go!

It looks like a nice casual environment with bar seating available. Kind of small - It was very busy.

Turn in at the light, and be careful about which driveway you pick- I think it's the second driveway, near a daycare, and it winds around back to the restaurant. You can see the place from James. Pretty busy at lunchtime, a few dine in and some carryout. Served cafeteria style, so you can see what you want, and drool over it. Well, there's a clear shield, but you know what I mean. I got smothered pork chops, since I hadn't had them forever. Meaty, tender, covered in gravy and onions. So so good, especially as comfort food on a cold day. You can also get them fried. Plenty of other things on the menu looked good. And all of the sides sounded good. I ended up getting one that was a mix of cabbage and greens, instead of getting the two separately, so that gave me space for another side. I went with mac & cheese. Sweetie's mom's mac is the best in the world. I'm not kidding. This is not quite that good, but is a very good homemade version, loaded with cheese, and baked in a big pan. Service was excellent. Prices are a bit steep, but good for the quantity and quality. Canned pop. Cheap plasticware. I was leery, but the pork chops were so tender that even a plastic knife pulled them apart easily. Hardly needed it. The place is not fancy inside. Old, but clean, a few booths and tables. You're there for the food, not the decor. Or, come in and pick it up and take it home. And have better silverware... I will definitely be back. I loved what I got, and was enticed by some of the other things.

To be sure, Zion Cafeteria delivers on what it claims to be: a church cafeteria with daily specials. The baptist church of the same name down the street wanted to open a restaurant to make a difference on East Main Street, which is admirable. The food was just OK, aside from the meatloaf which was solid, but of a smallish portion (if it came with more slices rather than one I would've bumped it up a star). Greens didn't have any zing and the corn bread was alright, while the pecan pie is unfortunately not made by someone's grandma, but rather out of a box. Perhaps if they can get some of them in the kitchen it would make a visit more compelling. In the end it's another much needed restaurant option on a street that needs some and you can feel warm and fuzzy for supporting a local business that is trying to improve the area.
