My first visit and I was a little apprehensive because I was the only customer. I have a motto, "go where the people are," and there were no people. I looked at the steam table, and not sure what to get because I tire of spending my money and being disappointed. I ordered something that I thought would be a safe-bet...I ordered 4 fried wings, Mac and cheese, and candied yams. I started tasting my food when I got in the car. The wings were perfectly cooked -- juicy and tender. The Mac and cheese had a decent amount of cheese, not like some places that cover their Mac and cheese with some type of Velveeta sauce. I would have eaten all of my wings in the car, but I needed some hot sauce, which surprisingly the restaurant did not have. I finished my meal when I got home. The yams were delicious...not overly sweet. I will say that the wings and Mac and cheese could have used a little more seasoning, but that was okay...there are many times where I went to a soul food restaurant and had to toss food because it was way too salty. I would rather my food to be under seasoned than over seasoned. You can always add, but you can't take it away. I will definitely return, and try something else on the menu, and hopefully not be disappointed. read more

Over the years I've had baked and fried chicken from here many times. Mostly it was good, just a few times it was over salted. I've been getting fish and the fish was perfectly seasoned, the whiting. However, this last time I went for the Friday Fish Fry, it was over salted and I could not eat it. I could tell it was a different batter. Also, it was too fishy tasting. The fish I usually get comes out juicy and lightly seasoned. This last time it was darker and heavily seasoned. Waaaay too salty. I hear the liver and onions is good. Madison Soul Food Kitchen is located at the United House of Prayer For All People on Greenway Avenue, a few blocks from Leonard & I-670 on the near east side. It's very, very easy to get to. The Kitchen is a small, simple church cafeteria that's opened as a restaurant to the public 7 days/week. Members of the church cook and serve. There is plenty of great parking in the church's big, safe, fenced parking lot. The food was phenomenal - delicious, "stick to your bones", wonderful soul food. Truly fantastic. The best I've found in Columbus, without question. This was the most great food I've had for $10 bucks in a long time (meals with 2 sides are $7; I added cobbler and a drink). Servers were kind and welcoming. The regulars in the dining room were friendly and welcoming. 3 or 4 people asked how our meal was and invited us back. I followed the lead of the 2 ladies in front of me in the serving line and ordered Salisbury Steak (probably the best I've ever had), mac & cheese (absolutely delicious), green beans (very good), and peach cobbler (very good). My wife had baked chicken (absolutely delicious), mac & cheese, rice & gravy, and cornbread. Tea and lemonade were good and sweet. Yes, folks, this is a simple "off the beaten path" church cafeteria-style restaurant in an inner-city neighborhood that many Yelp'ers don't frequent or have never been to. A really special hidden gem off woodland and greenway, on the east side. The kitchen is located on the side of a church and offers more than enough parking in the church parking lot. Absolute amazing down home soul food cookin at an outstanding price. This kitchen is run by volunteers from the Church. I posted pictures of the weekly schedule. On Saturday's they offer breakfast starting at 730 am, lunch begins service at 11:30am. Today they offered baked chicken, fried chicken, fried whiting fish, pork chops and salisbury steak. Meal comes with two sides and corn bread. Additional sides are $2 each but totally worth it. Stay in and eat or take home with you. The dining area seats between 25-30 and a vending machine offers fresh baked desserts or you can purchase a warm dessert on the food line, today peach cobbler was served and it reminded me of granny's. When we arrived, the fried chicken had already run out but we only had to wait for 10 minutes..absolutely fresh, warm and outstanding!! There's just something about fried chicken that warms my soul. Fresh mixed vegetables, the green beans were oh so perfect. Greens on the food line as well, i tried some of my husband's and they were great. Baked mac and cheese. Typically i am not a baked mac n cheese fan but this baked mac and cheese was on point. Still creamy and cheesy in the middle. Fish frys coming as well. Some of the BEST soul food I've had in the city and the money proceeds go to a great cause. The sweet tea is better than Canes..whoaa buddy! I actually googled highest rated fried chicken in Columbus and Madison's came up. I looked at the online menu and it stated that they serve chicken. I got there and they only serve fried chicken wings. So disappointing! I had seen that someone raved on the Salisbury steak so that's what I ordered along with mac-n-cheese and collard greens thinking that this is soul food so, these greens have got to be good. I was wrong. Everything was so very bland with little to no taste. The only thing good about the steak was the gravy and even that was tasteless. A little bit of atmosphere... iron fence around a church, when you pull into the parking lot there is a side door you enter. When you enter the church you see a number of signs saying "CASH ONLY". In the room there are some stained glass windows, doors with glass crosses, plainly decorated tables, and one very decorated table (I heard someone went missing and the table is set for when he returns). There are 2 TVs that played two different shows (competing noise), and there is a constant flow of customers. The food changes each day, but it seems to be "southern" cooking - fried chicken, ribs, greens, mac and cheese, yams, green beans, etc. You have your choice of meat, two sides, and a choice of bread (wheat, white, corn bread) - all for about $8. For most people, it's enough for 2 meals. There are some wonderful women serving (cafeteria style) the food and are very nice and helpful. Now I am a big foodie and love Columbus food scene. However, one thing I have always complained about is the lack of good soul food in this large city, because you can easily go to Detroit, Cleveland, and even Toledo to find decent soul food and could not here. I ordered the fried chicken, mac and cheese and the yams. The chicken was so flavorful and was perfectly seasoned and the chicken was crisp, it reminded me of my grandma's fried chicken, now the yams they were just on point and really don't know how to explain, but they were so so so GOOD! The mac and cheese was good too, just need a little salt and it was baked just how I liked and very cheesy. Overall the food was affordable and decently priced, for two people we had two meals that came with two sides, cornbread, peach cobbler, and a sweet tea all for $18! This is my go to when I want real food for lunch. You cant ask for a better meal for the price. I would suggest them raising their prices, but I'm not mad at all on my end that they aren't. I usually get the chicken meal. Fried or baked, they are both only $7 and comes with 2 sides of your choice and a choice of bread. You really cant go wrong with the sides. My go to are mac and cheese and green. However, dont sleep on the sweet potatoes, as I get them quite often as well. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait for some foods. Madison Soul Food Kitchen is a great find and managed by the community church. I would imagine it helps fund the congregation with their projects, works in the community, and maintenance of the Church. Be mindful...this is a CASH ONLY ESTABLISHMENT. The menu rotates a few items daily, but you always see the staples of fried chicken, fried pork chops, and fried fish. Meatloaf, Salisbury Steak, Chicken Fried Steak, etc rotate depending on the day. I was a little disappointed because I love Salisbury Steak, but went with the Pork Chops, Rice and Gravy, and Mac and Cheese. My friend went with Fried Chicken, Sweet Potatoes, and Mac and Cheese. We also split the peach cobbler. I would say the chicken and sweet potatoes were the stars. The pork chop was fresh, but missing salt. After adding some salt from the tables, it was also a Star. Mac and Cheese was okay for me and the rice and gravy lacked a depth of flavor. Overall, a great location for some good old soul food for good price. I'm gonna be very honest here the food is amazing. These are holy sanctified people. And they are very nice. However there is one cook lady behind there that seems to be the oldest mother of the church and doesn't necessarily like when girls come in there half dressed. So I don't blame her. I visited the restaurant this afternoon and did not have a mask, they said that you had to have a mask and charged a $1.00. I ask if they was going to give it to me for free since I was going to buy two dinners, they replied that the mask cost $1.00. Again I said you are going to let a $1 mask stop you from making $24, again they repeated that the mask was $1.00. Being located in a church I'll say "God they are slow!" Their number one seller are their wings and it appears to be a hassle on their part to keep them readily available for purchase. Everything in there is self explanatory (wings, fish, baked chicken, salisbury steak) and they don't have too many sides (Mac and cheese, a vegetable, cobbler, sweet potatoes, rice and gravy that's about it). Nevertheless their clientele base regardless of race or age, when they get to their buffet style line, appear indecisive, confused, and perplexed! It's a cash only place but for some reason when people get to the register they act like they're filling out paperwork for a mortgage on a home! The food is what they say it is "Soul Food." It's got the taste you'd expect out of soul food but the waiting around there is excruciating. If you're in a rush for lunch don't expect to get in there and out. Be prepared to wait around, especially for wings, and watch the seasons change outside before you get your food. Chicken wings, pork chops, meat loaf, greens, cornbread, mashed potatoes and gravy, and some of the best homemade desserts you could ask for under $10. Cafeteria-style Dine in or carry out. My mother and I eat there about twice a week and we love it. Open 7days a week for lunch and dinner, 11:30am-7:00. Food is very good but the service can be inconsistent and borderline rude depending on which day you go. I ordered food on the phone and I was told that no one took my order and next time I order get the person's name that I ordered from. Unbelievable! Where else in the world do you have to do this! Why is it we feel empowered to treat our own community with disdain when we try to patronize our very own. The food is very good and I give it 4 stars but the service was insulting and the sad part is they were too obtuse to even know it. I enjoy most of the dinners I get from here. I just got introduced to the baked chicken and it was GREAT. When the y 1st opened they had a older lady selling sweet potato pies and those were GREAT but I imagine because of her age that she may have passed away because they don't sell the pies anymore and if they do sell slices you can tell that it was store purchased and not homemade . But overall I like coming here to get a good meal for a reasonable price and the staff is courteous. read more
