We were really looking forward to it after seeing so many positive recent reviews. Unfortunately, this visit did not live up to expectations. The Raj Kachori appetizer was tasty, but the kachori shell itself was stale and oily. The lamb filling in the Keema Naan was heavy and overpowered the soft, pillowy bread. The meat had a mealy texture and seemed very similar to the lamb kebab also listed on the menu. We would have preferred a more tender and flavorful ground textured filling that complemented the naan rather than overwhelmed. The Tandoori Special Kabob Platter, however, was a major disappointment. The boti kabob fell apart when we tried to pick it up (that us the lamb kabob mentioned earlier), and the other meats were generally dry, heavily seasoned, and overly spicy. The daal makhanni was under-seasoned, and the rice was just okay. I also ordered chai after reading reviews praising the spiced tea with clove, cardamom, and cinnamon. Instead, I received a small tea pot with hit water with a chai tea bag and Cold milk on the side for $4.50. We also noticed that the prices of a few items on the check were a dollar or saw higher than those on the menu. But what really soured the evening was how we were treated as closing time approached. The restaurant's website states that it is open until 10:00 p.m. on weekend nights. At 9:18 p.m., our server told us the kitchen was closing at 9:30, which we understood. Shortly afterward, an older gentleman who appeared to be the owner told us the restaurant was closing at 9:30. A few moments later the music was turned off and the staff began clearing the table in a way that felt extremely rushed. Dishes were being removed practically from our hands. We understand that restaurants need to close on time, but customers who are seated and finishing their meal should not be made to feel like they are being pushed out the door. For a bill of more than $74 before tip, we expected a much better meal and, at the very least, to feel welcome while finishing our dinner. There were a couple of positives-The mango lassi was excellent, and our server was polite, attentive, and courteous-but overall, the food was underwhelming and the way the evening ended was uncomfortable and disappointing. Sadly, after this experience, we won't be returning.

I don't understand what "As D." is speaking about because I just had Idli there and it was spectacular, possibly one of my favorite dishes out of the whole menu. You may have had it in the winter and you assumed it was cold because you were cold, that is the only possible answer. If anyone wants great southern indian quality cooking THIS is the place to go! There is no other substitute for this great establishment that has been on the market for years, I am pretty sure it has been about 10 years or so? To me thats wonderful, with all the new additions that they have added with the new TV's that have a modern touch to the comfortable new bathrooms, they have shown the value they have in customer service! We visit this place once in a while. Wish it was close to where we live. Pleasantly surprised during our recent visit there. They have done some renovations and made the place looking better than before. Best of all the bathrooms are renovated, which was long overdue! Bright and clean bathrooms now! Food: Some of the best vegetarian food anywhere. I have come across some not so good dishes once in a while but mostly great tasting fares. Especially love the Palace Thali that comes with dosa, idli, vada and dessert. Wait staff: Mostly nice but two points - 1. Some of them could keep a more pleasant face, may be smile once in a while :) 2. Keep the place mats right side up, not a big deal, but then I am a perfectionist. We went back so wanted to do an update. I come here when I'm craving dosas. This place hands down has one of the most extensive list of dosas (South Indian Crepes) and they are all accompanied with a nice portion of sambar and chutneys. The food is always piping hot. This time I went, I specifically ordered a spring dosa, stuffed with lots of veggies and spiced mashed potatoes. The food is full of flavor and the staff is very nice about explaining the menu options and willingly substitute one item for another. In fact, they give you an extra sambar and chutney for free. I know other places that have smaller portions to begin with and charge for extra! The location is a little far for me and it is a little secluded, but totally worth it. read more

FINALLY THEY REOPENED!!!! So happy to see them come back, this was my families go to spot back in the day. We were so sad to see them close down but are so happy they reopened. The best part is they redid everything, their menu is very simple and even though they're only using a soft opening menu for now its amazing. Traditional south indian food at its finest, everything is so perfectly cooked from the chapati to the butter chicken. No buffet but instead they're doing a quick service option where I was able to try everything and have a mix of plates which hit the spot. I can't wait for them to release their whole menu, 100% check them out!! read more

Visited Madras Palace after almost a year and my family was pleasantly surprised to see new entrees in the menu that I thought we would never see in the U.S. Vada Curry Kothu Porotha and Korma Set Dosa! Centuries old Tamilnadu originals! And the taste was unbelievable original. They must have a new chef well versed in these recipes, I am sure. And the Idli Sambar was, as always, the best. So happy that they reopened! I love the new style that they have as well. Far better than the sit down style restaurant which was there before. Quick and fast but also you can choose from a variety of sides if you were to do the combo option. They just recently opened so everything is still new. Their new menu has everything to fit non veg and veg lovers. I'm glad they decided to incorporate non vegetarian dishes because it makes it so much better! I can honestly say that of all the Indian restaurants we've tried in Bethesda and DC, Kadhai is our favorite. The restaurant is roomy and spacing between tables is never tight and more than adequate. White linen tablecloths are on the tablesand all silverware & glassware are shiny & clean. Large windows let in plenty of light during the day. I find it nice to start off w/ an Indian style salad but sometimes the cooked food smells so good, that I skip straight to the covered containers. There is always a plethora of dishes that are so delicious and the chicken, lamb, & tandoori items are amazingly tender. Plus the sauces on the meats and vegetables are amazing. Sometimes I find myself enjoying a dish w/ a vegetable I would never eat, like squash, beause the sauce and other vegetables make such a delightful meal. If you want to pick up food from the buffet to take home, they now have a deal where you can take home 2 lbs of buffet food and pay the regular price for the buffet for 1 person. Unfortunately, the last few visits haven't been great, and tonight was the worst it's ever been. I ordered the matar paneer and it was watery and almost completely flavorless, which is very unlike what I've had there before. The rice was even more disappointing -- it tasted old and was hardened into clumps, almost molded into the shape of the container instead of being individual grains. It was difficult to even break apart. The samosas were good, which was the one bright spot, but the garlic naan barely had any garlic on it. Normally their naan is amazing and very flavorful. I'm really disappointed because this used to be my go-to spot for Indian food. I'm hoping this was just a bad night, but after a few recent experiences that were also lacking in freshness and flavor, I may have to start looking for a new place.

I suspect the expereince could have been better had we dined in at Virraj and not done takeout as I suspect that this is a dish that is best enjoyed soon after it's made. Overall I would recommend based on the other dishes but the Palak Chaat at Rasika's was much better. Also their online order menu and their website needs pictures of their dishes.

My absolute favorite thing is the Eggplant Salad. It comes with a lot of herbs, and reminds me of an adobo flavor (soy sauce + vinegar)! I also really liked the Samsa (beef & onion puff pastry bun). Everything was quite flavorful and filling! We also tried two hand-pulled noodle dishes: Gam Bian Soman (soy sauce and sesame based) and Laghman (tomato based). Both were surprisingly on the blander side, but the noodles itself were perfect cooked. I do like how not oily they were!
