This place makes great Indian food! We had a large take out order assortment of their dishes for dinner last night and it seemed like every one was just excellent! From the samosas to the spinach dish to the butter chicken curry the flavors are perfect. They provide plenty is accompanying sauces abd the flavors really go well with every dish we ordered. I highly recommend the dosa as well as the pani puri. The pani puri is an experience of taste and texture delights! The Palak Chaat was the best take in any spinach dish I have ever had. We also tried the chicken Roti wrap which was really good too. Now the only negative here is that they provided no rice of any kind with the butter chicken, which really needed it given the huge amount of sauce vs small amount of incredibly delicious tender chicken in the dish. I mean come on guys what do I do with all the sauce? Slurp it up on a spoon? That said, I highly recommend Hot Breads!!! And will be back soon. read more

Do not order for any important occasion! Iordered a cake for my wedding reception and it looked like a child decorated it. The bottom left photo is what I ordered, minus a layer. The other two photos are what I received for my wedding. What was I supposed to do, I needed a cake. I tried to contact the owner a couple days after and never received a response. This was a $200+ cake and this is the service I get. In addition, the cake was very dry. It was embarrassing serving it to our guests. Decided to give it another try now what it has rebranded. This place is great! The hubby and I stopped by for a quick bite and shared an order of the butter chicken and a cake pop. The food was ready relatively quickly! We thought the order of the butter chicken was an excellent portion and loved the authentic metal serving tray. The chicken was clean (no gross or fatty pieces) and had the perfect amount of heat. The rice was tender and the naan was mouthwatering. They even had some onion on the side to give a little zing to the curry! The cake pop was scrumptious: Super chocolatey in flavor and I liked the texture of the crunchy sprinkles against the soft cake. A great find! read more

The not so good chocolate cake was just used as a prop last night at my friends birthday party. It had a peculiar smell to it and we could feel that it was not fresh and was not supposed to be eaten. I can not recommend Hot Breads enough. My family has been eating there for at least 10 years ago. About 9 years ago, my husband and I found out they also make wedding cakes. After looking at samples and a cake tasting, we were sold! (We has them make our wedding cake for our wedding 8 1/2 years ago). The cakes are beautiful, much more affordable than most in the DC area, taste amazing (both the cake and buttercream frosting), and perhaps most importantly, can be made egg-free for my lacto-vegetarian husband (without sacrificing moistness). I ordered the Palak Chaat (but, other ingredients added that made the spinach soggy), Chicken Kottu Parott (asked for not spicy and it was very spicy, so all I tasted was bitter, dry chicken), and Potato Dosa (recommended by the waiter to put the potato on the side, but it was folded into the dosa, thus causing the dosa to be soggy). When I could work around the soggy Palak Chaat, the crunchy spinach was good as was the potato dosa. The chicken dish was not good. The service was a bit odd. I would ask a question or state what I wanted to order and there was an awkward pause by the waiter/(owner?) as if they did not understand what I was saying (there was no language barriers here--we are both American). Generally just not impressed. Went to lunch here with a couple of co-workers. Most of us ordered the lunch special, which comes with a dessert. The lunch special was ok, although they don't really have written down what the lunch special is (they tell you when you order but if I wanted to refer to it later, I wouldn't be able to tell you what it is.) My high review is mainly for the delicious palak chaat, the only vegetarian dish I've ever truly craved. The crunchy fried spinach, the spicy mix of sauce and yogurt, the crispy pita chips, and the chickpeas and potatoes make for a hearty dish for under $7. The only other thing I've tried was the tikka masala puff pastry, which to me was fairly dry and bland. However, you can't beat the cheap prices and quick service of the chaats. This is my go-to place to satisfy my indian food cravings! Their chaats are excellent and truly authentic. The highlight is the Dahi Batata Puri, which we order on a weekly basis. Their buffet is really good too. Very different from the standard indian buffet you see throughout indian restaurants in america. This is for the bakery. Hot Breads is a well known name brand and often has great pastries, cookies and cakes. We were quite excited to visit and also dine at their sister restaurant next door (highly recommend that by the way). The 1 star is mainly for the poor customer service and extremely tenuous attitude of the person at the front desk. He seemed testy from the get go. I asked a simple question of whether they had veg puffs and he somehow thought I was being presumptuous and showed me the hand - literally pointing me to the warm keep implying yes. I found it quite rude - he could just said yes and no I didn't know what was inside the puffs and if they were veggie puffs or egg or chicken - sorry, no x-ray vision. Ok we still bought some cookies and puffs having gone all the way. I'd say the puffs were good. One of the cookies was meh and the other was good. Please don't show your frustration on the customers; they're giving you business and Indians that too as they can refer and bring more customers. My wife has been purchasing sugar free cakes for years from Hot Breads. These cakes are very tasty and I would challenge anyone to tell that they sugar free. The last couple times we've experienced some customer service let downs. But I always say everyone make mistakes, it all about what you do to "fix" it. A few months back our cake was not ready (special order only) at the scheduled time, which resulted in a problem, as we were bringing it to an event. The shop's response was to apologize and give us a coupon for two free cakes in the future - great "fix" it example. Our most recent experience was a couple weeks ago, my wife special ordered a Birthday cake. When she went to pick the cake up it again was not ready at the scheduled date/time. Most disappointing was that when my wife went to pay for the cake with the coupon, the employee advised my wife that the coupon would not be honored. The reason, the manager that provided us the coupon no longer worked at the shop. My wife expressed her displeasure at both the repeated occurence of the cake not being ready when scheduled and that the store was not going to honor its coupon, ironically a remedy for the similar issue. My wife asked to talk to the manager and was told she was speaking to the manager and that she would take the issue to owner in the back. She quickly returned and said the owner supported that the coupon would not be honored. Obviously, we will not be returning to Hot Breads and as it is in our neighborhood (the Kentlands), we will be advising our neighbors of the deplorable customer service provided by Hot Breads. read more

We went to hot breads, we reached around 8:15 pm, they were closing at 9 pm. After deciding our orders, when we got to counter for ordering, lady taking orders suddenly said dining room is not open, only take outs are allowed. This is despite at least 10-12 already sitting and a party going on in adjacent room. It is fine u can have different dining hours but please mention them clearly so that people don't waste time In coming to your place. TERRIBLE. Let me just start of by saying, pictures can be deceiving! Amongst walking in, the atmosphere alone was lacking. Tables were not cleaned off and floors had not been swept. It wasn't even busy so made me question why the place looked the way it did. Secondly, SERVICE WAS EMBARRASSING. The teenager at the cash register was rude and lacked manners. His sarcasm was not taken lightly. Lastly, the food was pathetic.. ordered the sampler and buttered chicken. Clearly things were microwaved up. Not only that?! It was still cold! I love this place. There was a time I came in here something like twice a week for a whole month. Many of the employees knew who I was. They have an interesting selection of pastries. I love the paneer croissant! It is a bit spicy and the perfect flaky texture. They also have the best chai! You have to specify that you want the Masala Chai. It is actually cheaper than the other one they offer, and tastes much better! I'm not the biggest fan of their cakes. A bit too much filling for me. But I do like their eclairs and chocolate horns. Their sweeet pastry selection is always changing, so it depends what they have on the day you go.
