Cute mom and pop dosa spot, don't expect great service. The dosas were crispy and delicious and the Masala potatoes were mildly spicy, but not overpowering. The Sambar and the crispy Samosas were quite spicy. My family came here for a late lunch on Saturday and the restaurant was completely empty. I can see why. The service was stand-offish as both staff members frowned at us and rudely served us. While the food is 4 stars, the service brings it down a notch. If you're in the area craving dosa, try it out but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. read more

This was my first time trying dosas. The restaurant is located near kentlands, in Gaithersburg. We were seated prompted and the staff took our order really quickly. We ordered the chicken lollipop and two dosas along with a mango lassi. I really liked the dosas, crispy, light and the dipping sauces were really good. It was light and not heavy or spicy. Representing 2022 in alphabet series for D is for Dosa & Chaat. I visited here one time in December 2022 on a date after a Christmas tree lighting in Kentlands. This is a very nice Indian restaurant. We got garlic naan and our rice meals, which were solid. Service was efficient & nice. I've had some better Indian, but this is definitely a very good choice. read more

I love Indian food. I really do. But when it comes to the spice level, I'm baby spice! When we told our server we wanted our dishes to be mild, in fact, super mild if it can be managed. I know our server was going to try to let the chef know that but when she said he likes to make his dishes a little too hot, I knew we were in trouble. And when our dishes arrived, they were indeed too spicy even though our receipt at the end of the night said, "American mild" on it. We started with the samosas. Good but a little too spicy. Garlic Naan - great but too small of a portion! Goat Saag - one of my favorite items to order but too spicy for American mild. Also, this dish is not very common so always happy to find a place that serves it but can't come back if it's too spicy. I did have it again the next day as leftovers at home. It's much more manageable if you eat it cold so that's what I did. Butter chicken - few places that we have visited make this particular dish spicy but this was. Service was good. Plenty of parking. My parents wanted to try this place so we all went on a Monday and it was empty...but I had read all the reviews that said they had amazing food so wasn't scared about the lack of patrons. It's a pretty basic, low-key place and that's fine. Their menu is huge and covers all kinds of Indian food. My mom is an amazing cook so we were all skeptical about the food. We ordered so many things...and they were all amazing! We got samosa chaat, chicken biryani, Chinese Manchurian, Channa batura, paneer Kati roll and chicken Kati roll...wow, we rave about all of them! Our Indian food bar is pretty high and I'm happy to say we all loved their food and will definitely be back! Some of the prices did seem a bit high for the portion size but the food was worth it. Dosa and Chaat is a great tucked away spot in the kentlands. I've been here twice only and the waiter remembered us the second time. The food comes out piping hot and it's very much like Indian street food. I imagine I'm on the streets of India and enjoying fantastic bites as a sit at the table. They make a great masala dosa, chai, papadam, medhu vadai, hakka noodles (veggie), and so many other things I can't remember them all -- because I've been eating here for years, and getting take-out for years, and finally have completed the newest task: got delivery from them via GrubHub and all options are fantastic! Eating there is really nice -- I like the décor and music ... and the service is very friendly, being both relaxed and speedy. I like the oh-so-pretty fabrics hanging from the ceiling .... They are accommodating, varying the spice level to the taste and need of the eater (customer!). :-D That's very good! Some Indian places will not do this, rending the food inedible for some ... such as my frequent dining partner! So, being able to say something needs to be mild is very important! We got mixed vegetable Kurma (medium), butter chicken (medium), and vegetable biryani. My favorite was the butter chicken, I found the medium spice to be perfect without it being too spicy and flavorful! Second was the vegetable kurma was bursting in flavor with a good amount of vegetables. To say I was impressed with Dosa and Chaat is an understatement. I had an amazing experience here. Dosa and Chaat has a fantastic reputation among the vegan community. A large portion of their menu is vegan, and is labeled clearly as vegan. Additionally, they have a dessert case with cake pops, cupcakes, eclairs, tiramisu, and a variety of cake flavors that are all vegan! I enjoyed table service with my friend there for lunch. Our server was so friendly. She has been working there since 2016 and said she is so happy to come to work. Her positivity and personality really shines and contributed to this positive dining experience. I ordered the Chetni Pudi Masala Dosa and was amazed with the portion size. It was my first Dosa so I am not sure what is typical, and it overflowed the plate. There was so much flavor between the potato filling with veggies and the dipping sauces which included a spicy one, a savory veggie broth, and creamy coconut one. I had a very large appetite and I had about 1/3 remaining as a leftover. At only $13 this Dosa was a bargain. I still had room for dessert so I enjoyed a vegan eclair. The eclair had such an airy cream filling, a chocolate frosting that was the right thickness and far from too sweet, and a light pastry that reminded me of a yeast donut. I also bought the butterscotch cake, tiramisu, and Black Forest cake to take home. The winner was the butterscotch cake. It was caramel-like and absolutely melted in your mouth. This flavor was unique for me so this is why it was my favorite. The tiramisu had a great coffee, chocolate, and cream balance. It was exactly what I hoped for. The Black Forest cake was dryer and needed more cherry flavor. It was still a delicious cake, however, since the other two slices blew me away, this one was underwhelming. We also tried the chickpea appetizer and paneer and it was amazing. For meals we had tikka masala, butter chicken, a curry. We were all very pleased with portion size and taste. Ordered the $17 butter chicken entree with a side of garlic naan. First off, the food was delicious. The sauce was spicy and flavorful and the chicken was tender and tasty. The garlic naan was only ok, I've had far better and I prefer when it's crispy instead of soft. My main complaint is the portion size-- it was abysmal. Upon opening it, I thought they must have made a mistake. When paying close to $20 for a meal, I expect to be satisfied at the very least. I'm extremely disappointed by this skimp "meal" as it felt more like a snack. Unfortunately, as much I enjoyed the food, the value was horrible so I will not be ordering from here again. We ordered food for 20 people for a party at our home and we could not have been more pleased! The food was amazing. Everyone at our get together was raving about how much they enjoyed the meal. Food is ok, but it's expensive and the portions are small. I've only ever done carry out - twice - it's ok but there are better options in Kentlands. I gave it three stars because the food wasn't bad, but the meat dishes don't have enough meat. Even the saag paneer was soupy with barely any paneer. My rating is that it's not awful. read more

Gaithersburg's Kentlands neighborhood has a LOT of restaurant choices. We decided to try someplace new and appreciated the atmosphere and warm greeting at Dosa & Chaat. I would definitely recommend it. The photo is of an unexpected and delicious appetizer. I got Saag goat, which was perfectly spiced. I had only a few items that weren't ideal. First, the server was a mumbler and nearly impossible to understand. Second, the entrees came mere moments after the appetizers, which always feels like they're rushing us out. (Give us time please!) This is the first Indian resturant I've been to in the DMV area. I like how fast and convenient it is to Togo food from here. This is just your classic go to place for me when I am are craving Indian food because it is close and good. I personally liked all the curries I tried here! If you are looking for decent Indian food in this area then you should consider visiting this place. I am always looking for restaurants that offer something for everyone in my group. I think in terms of variety and quality of Indian food this place does a good job. Their service is good. The staff is attentive, helpful, friendly, and responsive. The place is split up, as some other Indian restaurants have recently, with a dine in restaurant and a bakery of sorts. The decor is nicely done. The place seemed very clean and inviting. Of the hall next to the restrooms is piled with supplies. They serve beer and nonalcoholic beverages. Please note that we found two things to be annoying and it may be that you have no problem with it, but I would like to have known about this upfront so either I was prepared and make an informed decision. Please pay close attention to the bill/ check, especially if you have a group of 4 or more. 18% charge for bringing more customers. Now when I am aware that many restaurants will note on the menu or via signage or the staff will let you know that a group of eight or more automatically charged "tips " or "fees". And that's acceptable for me and my family and friends. However, I have not ever experienced 18% for a group of five. I fully support tipping having waited tables in a past life. But I I believe in tipping for a nominal based on type of service and quality of service. I would have left a much larger tip for the service, but felt my choice was taken away. Lastly, if you want to save 10% pay in cash. If you are like most people these days you either don't carry cash or don't carry hundreds in cash for dining out. While I enjoyed the food and the service I was disappointed by their business model. Since I honestly don't know if the 18% goes to the staff or the owner I would recommend going armed with this knowledge. read more

Came in here for a quick bite and ordered Samosas and two kinds of desserts -cream roll and black Forrest cake slice. Samosas were good and I like that there is an option to customize the level of spice in the filling to suit your needs.The sweet chutney dip served with it enhances the flavor of the samosas. Indian food is probably the food I'm least educated on. And this experience really proved it. MASALA DOSA: I was sure that a Dosa was a giant roll of thin bread for dipping, which I was half right about. The Dosa I had though, which was called the "Masala Dosa" was a square pocket of somewhat thin supple dough that encased a super delicious mix of potatoes, peas, curry, and spices (almost like a Samosa- but better). It came with four dipping sauces. I know none of their names. #Uneducated. There was a green sauce: I was not a fan of this - I remember, I took one taste and was like... ok, I hope the other sauces are better. There was a white sauce: I think this was made out of lentils. It also came with the pillowy lentil bread rounds that I ordered (The Idli Plate). It was decent, but nothing life changing. There was a red sauce: This was very good. I wish I had more of that sauce. It's the sort of sauce I want to put on everything #FranksRedHot And there was like a curry like sauce: This sauce was also delicious. I also found this sauce in another container inside the bag... I had no idea what it was for hahaha. I kinda just ate the bigger one with rice. The Masala Dosa was easily one of the best things I ordered. The bread casing was delicious, the insides were well balanced, punchy, and almost like a tube of pringles. I just didn't want to stop eating it. At least the commercials in the 90's would have you think that. On a completely separate diatribe: I'm kinda surprised that Pringles has lasted this long. I don't think I've seen anyone with a tube of Pringles in the last decade. It seems like they have like 30 flavors now... so someone's gotta be eating them right? Their just like... not that good. If you stack them up against any other chip (all puns intended), they just don't hold up. Yes, it's fun eating 10 pringles all at once... but that wonder and amusement fades quickly. IDLI PLATE: I wasn't the hugest fan of these. But I'm not 100 percent sure I was eating them right either...? Was I suppose to put the curry on them? It came with the white sauce... was that for dipping... or was I suppose to dress them. The flavors of the lentils shown through, but I just felt like they were slightly unremarkable Aloo Gobi: Get this. This, like the Masala Dosa, was another food that I had to control myself with. Basically, if you like Kung Pao Chicken you'll love this. But there's no chicken, it's just cauliflower, and it's also the best Kung Pao Cauliflower you've ever eaten. Saag Paneer: This is my safety school. Paneer: delicious cheese. Creamy spinach with Indian spices: amazing. I soaked up every last bit of that sauce with anything I had on hand. And it was QUITE filling. Like... I could have just ordered this. Albeit, I ordered in mass cause it's Covid and I want to maximize my meals and minimize my outings. So, Dosa and Chaat is in the Kentlands, and it's directly next to Hot Breads. If you haven't been to Hot Breads, it's an amazing bakery that also is an Indian cafe. I've never had Hot Breads Indian food before, I just knew of it because it's unique and I'm a Yelper. But I had one of their wedding cakes at my friends wedding way back in 2000 Ratta tat tat tat. So Dosa And Chaat is actually serving out the take out from Hot Breads at the current moment. There's a sign on the door that says Hot Breads pick-up next door. So I go into pick up my food and see this shining bakery case full of wonderful looking things. I asked the gentleman there to let me know what the flavors of the cakes were because I was like... oh man, I remember how good Jeremy P.'s wedding cake was and I wanted to relive that memory. So he told me what each of the cakes were and I spent literally like 3 minutes waffling on which slice I'd like to try. So I decided on mango and this saint gives me a piece of chocolate cake to try as well, on the house. I mean... man, what a wonderful wonderful surprise. Dosa and Chaat has wonderful food. Yeah I didn't love a sauce or two, and I wasn't sure about the Idli Plate ( who knows if I even ate it close to how it was supposed to be eaten). But that customer service and that cake made me a REAL happy customer. I basically danced out of that place. I've never been tempted to sing the song "Firework before", and I wasn't tempted then. This review is only for the current pandemic limited dining, meaning carryout, since dining inside is a no go. While I see the reviews here vary, I suppose because I'm looking at Dosa & Chaat from a carryout perspective, it's different than if I expected a dining experience. Also, I"m not Indian and don't have the most refined palate for authentic Indian food, though I do purport to enjoy Indian food whenever possible! Anyhow, the menu here is extensive and has so many snacks, treats and dishes for all different palates. They have classic soups and dosas, as well as tasty appetizers like chilly gobi and spinach pakora, the latter being so light and flavorful, it was awesome. Possibly the least healthy way to eat spinach, but a fun change from a cooked entree dish or salad is this deep fried spicy treat - try it, you'll like it if you like Indian food and spices. The chilly gobi is one of several "Indochine" dishes with a flavor profile that is not my favorite, like deep fried Chinese style food smothered in a sweet red sauce. The main dishes are as expected with dishes like aloo gobi masala and vegetable korma - there is a lot more sauce than there is vegetables, but that's ok, you have plenty of sauce for your rice. The rice here is light and fluffy, but it is the white less healthy rice - still, fragrant! I wish they had brown rice. They do have pakoras and uthappam and idli and puri, so those are some fun dishes to eat for sure. Maybe, again, not the healthiest, but they are super tasty - masala uthappam. Also, if I didn't mention it, I love the selection of dosas, because that's my real weakness. Each one comes with plenty of dipping sauces - two different coconut chutneys, and I think a chili sauce and sambar. A meal unto itself is how I like to think of dosa, and the dosa with the spring vegetables is my favorite here. Mmm... they also have biryani and some fun rice dishes to try. Really, you have so many choices. My biggest problem is trying to limit what I'm ordering. I think if the menu were broken down only into appetizers and entrees, I wouldn't always order so much! The menu is well-marked with V and VG for vegan and vegetarian, as well as GF for gluten free. However, I will suggest if you have allergies to double check, but if you have severe allergies, I would avoid. They have a bakery here, too, that makes lovely cakes and cookies, but, if you have Celiac's, probably not advisable to eat here. All in all, the menu is extensive and makes my mouth water and brain hurt because I can't decide what to not order since I want it all. Prices are fair, portions are acceptable. If you're on a low carb or low fat diet, this will be challenging at Dosa & Chaat, but you might like the cheat meal to make it worth it. read more

Dosa and Chaat has really good food. During The coronavirus pandemic, the owner of Dosa & Chaat has been providing meals to Shady Grove Medical Center. Everything from Indian food, to sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade meals he can throw together. I was happy to be able to speak to the owner of D&C and was touched. He has been cooking and providing meals for frontline workers for over 60 days. I'm great full for those establishments who may donate a meal or two. However, he has been donating meals daily. I cannot wait for the county to reopen safely. I will be frequently visiting D&C in remembrance of how kind the owner is. Also, the meals he provided were delicious. The food was just okay. We asked for a certain level of spiciness on the dinners, and one came out extremely spicy, which was too much. Also, the prices went up significantly year over year, and that surprised me when we sat down. The garlic Naan was good, but I like the butter chicken I make more. The chicken korma wasn't that good as that dish usually gets finished, and the Naan is used to sop up the sauce, but not this time. The service was good, but it wasn't busy. We were only 1 of 2 tables while we were there. Maybe they do more carryout? I'm pretty sure we won't be going back. We stumbled upon this little gem last night. We saw the sign for Hot Breads and Cakes and was just going to check it out. The restaurant and bakery are attached and you enter through the bakery for the restaurant. We ended up ordering from both but you can just place the order at the bakery. I have always loved plain dosa. The only times that I had them previously were at the buffets. I wasn't sure how it was going to travel since this was a carry-out order. It came with 3 sauces and traveled pretty well. However I did open the box that it came in when I got into the car. I decided on spicy paneet tikka masala. It was definitely spicy and loved it. I even used the dosa to soak up the extra sauce. What a perfect marriage. Lastly, I had to get some pastries. I decided on cream brulee, mango cake, and pineapple cake. They were all delicious. My favorite was the pineapple cake. You can taste the pineapple but not overly powerful. Definitely will be back but not sure if I will be able to venture out to other items since I loved the dosa and paneer. UPDATE: loved it so much that I went back three days later and placed another order- pani puri, plain dosa, paneer 65, channa bhatura, and ginger mango. read more

Was craving dosas so badly so found this place through Yelp. I'm so glad that we went to try it out because the food was just amazing!! We got dahi batata puri to share and then Mysore Masala Dosa and Chetni Pudi Masala Dosa as our entrees. We got the plain dosa - a long, flat sheet of bread with lots of dipping sauces, some spicy, some savory, the shrimp biryani was a huge bowl of buttery rice with a halved hard-boiled egg and all kinds of orange-breaded shrimp underneath, and a masala uthappam, which I can only describe as an Indian pancake packed with veggies and spices. We also saw a glass display case with these square breads and decided to try one - not sure what it was called, but it was filled with a savory veggie curry. All the food was super-yummy and filling. I was very turned off by the customer service. I was never greeted. The person never asked, How may I help you?" I eventually told him what I wanted. After I paid he never said anything. He didn't say, "Thank you, have a great day." He said nothing. I did not feel welcomed at all in this place. I even commented as I was leaving, "Oh I guess no thank you or have a nice day." I will not be visiting this establishment any more. read more
