First off, I have been wanting to try this place since seeing it come across my social media feed. Can be challenging to find good Soulfood in NJ. So a friend and I decided to try it out. We went on a weekday. Online opening hours said 1pm so we got there for 1:30 but turned out they weren't opening until 2:30 (according to gentleman who opened the door). The greens were ok. My friend wasn't a big fan of the greens but she said the fried chicken was good. If in the area, I may do an order to go. Madre & Son exceeded my expectations. Its a nice and cozy spot. We had a table of eight. Although the restaurant is a little small, they were still able to accommodate us for this Sunday afternoon meal. I had the Whiting Fish, Collard Green & Mac and cheese. My Whiting were perfectly fried, the collards were good, however I didn't quite care for the Mac & Cheese, although it was extremely cheesy it reminded me of Velveeta which isn't my preference, this was the consensus over the table. I also tasted the lemon pepper shrimp which were really good. Although I didn't order the cabbage, they received raved reviews from everyone at our table who ordered it. I was told that the pork chop was excellent as well. But I almost forgot the cornbread which was absolutely delicious! To drink I had their homemade watermelon lemonade which was really good. The price point is very reasonable and the portions were appropriate. I will most definitely return again, but the next time will be for their Saturday brunch. My rating is totally based off the food. This was some of the best soul food I have had outside of the South. I had the BBQ beef meatballs, mac-n-cheese, and fried okra. I just took my godfather here today for his 71st birthday and I was not pleased by the service or the food. I ordered the catfish dinner it was 24 dollars and it was suppose to come with cornbread but they gave me two pieces of bread smh. She said no it only come with one piece of fish. Then they charged me for 3 juices and I only order 2. They had a kid meal but no kid drinks so the waiter insisted on me getting one juice and she split it into two. She poured the juice in 2 little red cups. To make matters worst the owner just sat there and didn't say hi or acknowledge any of us that were dining in. To me it was very rude and this is why as an African American I would rather go to a chain restaurant or support other cultures.
