Charged a 35% Tip Without Authorization I had dinner at Mae Ornnit Thai Kitchen on January 31, 2026, with three adults and three children. Our food total was $134.55, plus $13.42 in tax. The tipping section on the receipt was extremely confusing and, in my opinion, misleading. There were three different places related to tips: A printed total that already included a default 20% tip An "add a tip" section where you could add even more A custom tip and total section at the bottom Our dining experience did not justify a 20% tip. Service was minimal, and even water was self-serve. So I crossed out the default approach, wrote in a custom 15% tip, recalculated the total, and signed the receipt with the corrected amount. When the charge posted to my credit card, I discovered that the restaurant had ignored the total I wrote. Instead, they applied the default 20% and added my custom 15% on top of it, resulting in a 35% tip. This was not a misunderstanding. The total I authorized on the signed receipt was clear. The restaurant simply charged more than what I agreed to pay. I only caught this because I checked my credit card statement carefully. I have already filed a dispute with my credit card company. Customers should be extremely cautious here. The tip setup is confusing, and the final charge may not match what you actually write on the receipt. What should have been a normal family dinner turned into a frustrating dispute over an unauthorized charge. Update: The owner responded to my review, apologized for the mistake, and issued a full refund for the tip. I have also contacted my credit card company and closed the dispute. I have gotten takeout from this place once before, and have dined in once! Takeout experience: Good location and plenty of parking, upon entering it is such an amazing vibe! They made great use of the place with their pops of color and seating arrangements. Lots of tables were seen as "reserved". The cashier is located in the back of the restaurant and I was greeted immediately to collect my order. I got the Tom yum soup medium spicy and the drunken noodle medium spicy. And holy don't underestimate the spicy level! I thought I would be fine with medium spicy since I eat spicy and hot foods all the time, but Thai spice is so different haha! I'm very impressed with the spice level. Dine in: Seated immediately. Server was very nice and quick with out order! I ordered delivery on a Sunday night (so cannot speak to the ambiance) because our usual spot was closed. We shared spring rolls, green curry and drunken noodles. It was fairly quick and everything was nicely packaged. When we were eating the spring rolls we were a bit concerned. They looked nice and seemed freshly made in crunchy wrappers... but there was no flavor at all in the filling. Disappointing because the insides were nice shreds of crunchy cabbage, they just didn't bring any flavor. We needn't have worried. The drunken noodles and the curry both tasted great. I would recommend both. I would probably trey spicier than the default next time. I was intimidated because the menu highlighted they could not reduce the spice. Very solid Thai place that's close to my house. I think aesthetics wise they really nailed it. Lots of bright colors and it's just very pleasing. The tables and booths are placed well, and even going to the bathroom it turns into a rave? That's pretty cool! I came here a few weeks ago to try this place out and it didn't disappoint. I started off with my favorite appetizer, Chicken Satay. It's grilled marinated chicken served with peanut sauce and cucumber dressing. You really can't go wrong with this pick as it's just very hard to mess up. Believe me, if the appetizer is bad then that's already a red flag to me. It was delicious, you get four sticks of chicken satay and it's very generous compared to how many you get at other Thai places. Highly recommend. My entrée I got is also my favorite Thai Dish, Pad See Ew. Pan fried wide rice noodles with eggs, chinese broccoli with sweetened soy sauce with your choice of protein. This is a classic that you can rely on if you don't know what to get. I absolutely love this dish but for people wanting a less greasier option, this may not be it for you. It's simple, comforting stir fry food that I can get on any occasion. I forgot to mention the Thai Tea too! It's very sweet but honestly you don't get a lot of it. Sad to say that I've walked/driven by this place every day since it opened, and never tried their food. Absolutely my loss. This is the best delivery/small casual Thai I've had in Northern VA. Service was attentive and we ordered the Volcano Tom Yum Mama Pad ($19.95) and Satay with Curry Rice ($16.95). The Volcano Tom Yum Mama Pad is listed under their must-try menu items, it is stir-fried instant noodles with seafood (shrimp and squid) and steamed vegetables. The presentation of it is creative and photo-worthy. The server recommended that we dump all the contents onto the plate to make eating easier. The mango sticky rice smoothie is an interesting concept. All the sticky rice is piled on the bottom and the mango is blended into a smoothie. I usually don't like to write bad reviews, but this place is incredibly deceptive. Based on the pictures and glowing Yelp reviews, I thought I was in for a treat. Sadly, I was mistaken. The biggest letdown? The Volcano Ramen--the dish that initially caught my eye. In all the Yelp photos, it looks like a massive cup overflowing with rich, flavorful noodles. But in reality? It's clickbait. Instead of an abundant serving of noodles spilling over, it's just a single portion of glorified instant noodles sitting on a bed of cabbage, strategically placed to create the illusion of fullness. I don't mind paying for good food, but I do mind being misled. To make matters worse, the mango sticky rice was just "meh." And that's saying something because mango sticky rice is my thing! I get it every time it's on the menu, so I know a good one when I taste it. This one? Forgettable. The drinks were phenomenal, and the service was great, but outside of that? A solid 2-star experience. My husband didn't like his food either, and for a bill of $92, we expected way more. We thought we had stumbled upon another hidden gem, but instead, we left disappointed--and apparently, still hungry. My husband even had to make a pit stop at a fast food place before heading to work! That should tell you everything. If you're here just for drinks and good service, you might be fine. We are totally coming back to this place. My 16 month old son enjoyed the shrimp cakes and ate some of his pad Thai with glass noodle. This place is definitely kid friendly as they had a plate and utensils that my son could use. The shrimp cakes were perfectly friend or baked. It wasn't oily so hard to say if it's baked or fried but it was just perfect in terms of crispiness without being dry or hard. I really enjoyed the mama tom yum noodles, drunken noodles + thai tea. I would maybe pass next time on the pad thai or the fish cake appetizer, personally, it wasn't my favorite. I was pretty surprised by how tasty the foods were at Mae Ornnit as my husband and I randomly decided to give this place a try one afternoon. We didn't have much expectations and only stumbled upon this place after scrolling through endless list of restaurants on Yelp--not able to decide what and where to go for lunch. We got a few different lunch-sized entrees such as: pad Thai, drunken noodles, and beef kaprow. I was disappointed when the meal came out in a very small looking plate/bowl as the portion appeared to be significantly smaller than other neighboring Thai restaurants. But we were surprised by the depth of the plate/bowl as we were pretty full after indulging the meals. Not only the portions were optimal, but the food really tasted good--much tastier than some other Thai restaurants we've been to in the area. Not only did the food tastes great, but the interior of the restaurant was cute with a bit of rugged, retro feel and the service was thumbs-up. After being SO impressed by our first experience, we decided to grab our lunch again a few weeks later--but this time, due to time constraints we placed our order to-go. We actually grabbed four different lunch portion entrees and were SO disappointed! Except for the pad thai, other three entrees were sooo little in portion--much less than what we had at the restaurant previously. After scooping a few spoonful for my 6-year old son, the fried rice was more than half gone from the container. And everything else was similar. My husband, my son, and I--we don't have lack of portion control and eat crazy amounts of foods...but man, these portions were not reasonable at all. This made me second guess my initial positive feelings towards the restaurant. I'd rather have the restaurant charge a reasonable price for the amount of food rather than to charge less--giving the impression it's a great deal--only to realize the portion does not match up to the price charged. I actually do not know if I want to revisit the restaurant as this was such a letdown with inconsistency in portion size. If you don't mind the portion and want to eat some good Thai food, I recommend the place. Maybe the portion is decent for non-lunch times... Side Note: 1. There are plenty of parking as it's in the shopping plaza. 2. They do have lunch special from 11am to 3pm on weekdays which comes with a small side of appetizer and a choice of entree. The cost may vary depending on the type of protein you choose--price range from $11.95~14.95ish. The ginger chicken stir fry had less ginger flavor than expected but still none the less good. The kaprow beef was a bit salty but still good. The place isn't very big but was pretty consistently busy. The food was ordered and arrived at the table relatively quickly. The wait staff was consistent in checking in and serviced all tables without the appearance of being overwhelmed. Smokey, which is not normal for pad thai, IME. I requested extra sauce...not sure I would have enjoyed the noodles if I had not requested "extra" sauce. I love the flavoring of the sun dried beef but it was such a small portion for the price! The ramen had good flavoring too but was a bit too salty for me (but I do have a lower tolerance to salty food overall compared to other people). I would still recommend giving it a try since the presentation is so creative! The only way you get me to pay $20 for instant ramen is to make it spill out all pretty like this lol the seafood did make it more worth it though. Wish there were more scallops. Customer service issue :( I've eaten here approximately 10-12 times, introducing multiple friends and family. I WAS a net promoter. Went the other night around 7:30, party of two. Waited to be greeted. Offered a small table at the end of the middle section next to the bar and directly next to the flow of traffic for a slew of takeout orders. Asked that we please be seated at the open booth, which had a reserve sign. The man looked surprised and again wanted to seat us at the other table. I said it's ok we can wait. Female employee then came to check on us and again wanted to seat us at the small table. I said can you please seat us at the booth. She said no it's reserved only for 3-4 people. I said but nobody is waiting and it's more comfortable to sit there. She argued with me NO we won't seat you there. I said so you would rather not seat us and we come here all the time because you want to wait for a bigger party? Sure enough. Also the large picnic table by the door was open as it always is with another fake reserved sign. The lunch special here goes so hard. With no extras and tip it comes out to around $16 which is better than some fast food places. Why eat fast food when you can eat a nutritious meal here instead! The inside is so cute and welcoming. I'm obsessed with the little Lego model housing the toast payment box at the register. It's also pretty colorful in a tasteful way. The graphic designer of the menus really went off. It's so well designed and easy to read and understand. I've had the red curry and the drunken noodles.
