I love the food at Magdalena's. The vegetarian burrito is excellent, filled with black beans, rice, and fresh vegetables in season. (Last night was mushrooms, summer squash, and zucchini.) The staff is also happy to make any substitutions you'd like. Lots of choices for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. They have also upgraded their seating to lovely wooden tables and chairs. The first time I came here I tried the Tlayuda- enough food for 3 meals and not bad. You have to pay extra for chips and salsa but it comes with guacamole. I'd rather just have the free chips and salsa and be given the option to purchase guacamole. My second visit included a margarita and it kind of got me buzzed, but I can usually only drink 1 drink so you might not want to go by my standards. This time I asked for the Tlayuda, but they were out so I went for the enchiladas. I was happy to see the dish came with guacamole, salsa and a bit of lettuce, but that's about it. The pork was dry and tough and had no seasoning. The enchilada sauce tasted like it came from a can. The rice and beans were tolerable, but also a little dry. Nothing had any flavor because it seemed that there were no seasonings. The salsa was good, but mainly from the cilantro. I'm very picky about Mexican food because I lived in the southwest and Mexico. Yes I know there are different regions to Mexican food, spicy does not always equate to flavor and Americans have bastardized the cuisine with their loads of processed cheese. But Mexican food is always well cooked and most importantly flavorful. This dish was not. Because they are down the street I might try them one more time, but I am not sure $24 for a meal without leftovers is worth it for me. I generally have 3 guidelines I've found indicate I'm going to have a great meal in a Mexican restaurant: there's free chips and HOMEMADE salsa, the food is inexpensive, and there are lots of customers speaking Spanish in the restaurant. We stumbled into Magdalena's coming from Kinderhook and we were delighted. Owners are from Oaxaca, birthplace of Mexican cuisine. Friendly flexible staff, delicious and generous portion of shrimp tacos. Margarita wasn't perfect but a lot better than the one I got two nights ago from a trendy LES hotel. I used to like this place when I first started going here over a year ago. It's unfortunate I don't feel the same anymore. It was good but won't blow your socks off. They typically are very popular for take out under normal circumstances. So imagine my surprise when they started to impose additional fees for take out containers when you ask for something on the side. There is one person who waits tables and does take out who is amazing. She remembers orders and makes great recommendations. Wonderful personality. Then there is a guy who could care less (I edited myself here). I liked the people and the food but unfortunately will not go there anymore. I have questions about food storage and excessive microwave beeps from the kitchen. There were too many things that I have seen and experienced as time has gone on. I won't go into details because I don't want to be too negative. I just can't eat here anymore. If you do, you will be fine just don't expect to be blown away. read more

Sorry to report, but our experience here was truly awful. Sweet waitress who could not handle the table and was very slow. But in the end, the food was dreadful, the place has no charm to it/no atmosphere, and there are far better options in nearby Chatham and Hudson. To be totally avoided!! read more

I was introduced to Magdalena's by a friend today for lunch -- this is my new favorite place in town. The food was very good, fresh, and plentiful. Service was excellent (couldn't have been more than 7 minutes to get my dish). The biggest surprise was that the place wasn't jammed -- it should be! I had the enchaladas with black mole sauce and my buddy had taquitos. We would recommend either. Give me another couple weeks and I will be able to speak for every item on the menu. read more

Having been to Magdalena's more than a few times, I can say the food is often good. This gringo will not get the vegetarian burrito again. It consisted of a small tortilla, a handful of bland beans, a modest bit of more or less unseasoned rice and a whole lot of pieces of lettuce. If there was cheese in it, it was not evident. For $8, one can get a burrito at Moe's (or Chipotle) that while not "genuine" is considerably larger, has many options for vegetables, has more nutrition and is much better value for money. Went there tonight with my son...he got the burrito...I got the tlayuda with chicken...both dishes were amazing! We finished with the churros for dessert...delicious!!! Even though the place was busy, we didn't wait more than 10 minutes for our meals, and our service was wonderful. It is a family run business, very simple decor, and also has a small selection of mexican groceries. The prices are very reasonable and I cannot wait to return!
