Just stopped in after walking on the nearby rail trail and had some grub. The place was hopping on Memorial Day, rainy out busy inside. I got the yolks on you burger that had a fried egg on it I had them add chipotle mayo and switched cheddar cheese in for American amazing burger. Lots of flavor, I'll come here again and hope for consistency. My girlfriend got the big Mac wrap. She said she would get it again really tasty cold beers, great experience. We've come here a couple of times before on Mondays and taken advantage of the fish taco specials they have on Mondays which are very tasty as well but I really wanted a burger. read more

Update: Went to have dinner and drinks with my wife, food came out, boneless chicken wings, way over cooked, and almost crumb like, plate was mostly breading. Also the owner of the establishment was exceptionally rude at the time of visit when my wife and I inquired about getting our drinks to go, as with the COVID laws in place take out orders can also include alcoholic beverages. We had yet to consume our drinks and were willing to order additional food as takeout to have the drinks placed on that tab. At which point the drinks were removed from our table but not our bill, and we were told by the owner in a very nasty and sarcastic voice, "I'm sorry you can't finish your drinks in the duration of your meal." When I complained that the drinks had been removed from the table and not the bill they were brought back, still full, and there at that point we were met with threat of calling the police if I refused to drink and pay for an alcoholic beverage that was removed from the table, then brought back after we complained they would not remove it from the bill. After the fact, when I decide to take time to write a review I am contacted by the owner stating that my review is invalid and doesn't substantiate what actually transpired and that, in her words, the real reason for my review is because the restaurant would not break NYSLA law, which is not at all what we wanted. Food was disappointing. Ordered boneless wings and received mostly bread crumbs, or what appeared to be what was left over from another tables order. Way over cooked, and over priced. Used to love coming here and supporting local businesses, but I'd rather burn my money at least that wouldn't taste as bad. read more

I don't like giving bad reviews but, maybe they can do better next time since we have been ordering takeout for 2 years. We've been getting the same order pretty much for 2 years now and this time it was terrible. We get 5 orders of taco variations like fish tacos to the surf and turf. That normally are overstuffed and have lots of cabbage and sauce and the last time, it was just pitiful. I mean, barley anything in the tacos at All. I'm incredibly impressed with the updates this place has gotten. Valatie Bar & Grill is clearly aiming for a better clientel than the ruffians that used to haunt it's predecessor. On my visit at 5pm Saturday, I saw a wide range of ages, from seniors out for dinner, to early 20's; I'm sure it skews younger (21-40yo) as the night progresses. The bar that existed in this building before was decorated a little better than Buffalo Bill's dungeon from Silence of the Lambs, and was known for selling piss water for peanuts. Now it has soft lighting, ample seating with brighter windows, and ruff wood finishes. There were several TVs with games on, but that didn't give the bar a sports vibe. It was $5 for a Pint of Chatham Brewery's Oktoberfest, it was very good. They did have PBR on tap, along with Sierra Nevada, and something else that I can't recall. There was a nice selection of whiskey's and scotches prominently on display. The one-sheet food menu consisted of some tapas, salads, burger, and solid entree's. You won't find jalapeno poppers on the menu here. I did not order anything, though everyone seemed to be enjoying their food. (we ate across the street before coming in). I'll come back to see what the place is like at night, but for now I've got to say that I'm very impressed. read more

I wouldn't exactly call Valatie and the surrounding areas a food desert, but it does lack quality restaurants. See my earlier reviews. Blech. I was happy to read in the local paper that the restaurant was owned by the sons of the purveyor of Tierra Farms, home of delicious nuts, dried fruits, coffee, and lots of other things I'm probably forgetting. They bought the old run down bar in the village and gave it quite the face lift. It's got a large bar inside and 10-15 high top tables (an accessibility challenge, especially for short, pregnant people like myself). The place is a standard burgers and fries joint, with not much else on the menu. Veggie burger and chicken sandwiches, wings, and some sparse salad offerings. Hopefully there are plans to extend the menu a bit as popularity grows. That being said, they use good quality, locally sourced ingredients. This shouldn't even be a selling point, but unfortunately, despite living in an amazing agricultural area, most restaurants still use Ginsberg's or Sysco for their products. My husband enjoyed his burger and I had a fairly standard Caesar salad. My husband judges places like these by the quality of their fries, and I'm happy to report that he was pleased by their texture and taste. Dinner for two, with an appetizer, a few sodas and a whiskey was about $35. Burgers were around the $10 mark and my salad was something like $6. They had two specials that night (a special type of wings, 50 cent wings, and a chicken sandwich) and pitchers of local beer on tap at a discount. It also has a lot of big TVs to show the popular sportsball matches to draw in the locals for a relaxing evening. The decor and ambiance are relaxed and unpretentious, while serving good food in a friendly atmosphere that will appeal to the yuppies and locals alike. 3 stars for a great beginning, with more to come if they expand their options. After much anticipation, I finally made a visit here. I was not disappointed. Go. Don't let the exterior fool you, inside this door is a clean, warm, and inviting local establishment serving excellent food at affordable prices. I visited with my parents, who are pretty adventurous sorts. The staff greeted us warmly and gave their names. Both Haley, our server, and Andrew, another server were friendly and helpful. We ordered drinks: The local and craft beverage list is well rounded. 6 wings to share in the whiskey BBQ flavor - not bad. Crispy and flavorful. The blue cheese dressing was good too. My dad ordered a burger with all the fixings and my Mom, the rib eye sandwich. Both with onions straws. Both, I am told, were Cooked to perfection and delicious. The onion straws were a tad too salty. I ordered a special of fish tacos with mango salsa and got the french fries. I can't turn down fish tacos. But while the fish was cooked perfectly, and the slaw light and crunchy, a salsa was more or a jam and it lacked any spice or full flavor. I was disappointed, even with pouring a handy dose of cholula hot sauce on it. The fries were perfect. Fresh with the skins. And the straws and fries were huge portions. Be gentle. All came to less than $60 before tip. We left happy and satisfied. They told me Monday nights are taco night with $5 margaritas. Maybe they can redeem themselves there. They do serve Patron! We were fairly regular patrons of VBG when it was owned by Terra Farms, noted for it's dependably good service and great food. Then it changed ownership and it all went downhill. Staff changed, management changed and the menu changed. Became just another bar with mediocre menu. So we stopped going. Tonight was our first time back in several months and I'm happy to say things are looking up. Different menu (again), not advertised as "locally sourced" or "grass-fed" but nonetheless some interesting and well prepared choices. This place is awesome! I came here late at night after the kitchen had closed to get some drinks. They were able to accommodate by providing free chips and salsa, allowing the party of 3 to get drinks. Service was perfect! The bartender then told us he would let us order fried food, got a order of six wings with "insanity" sauce. I used to like this place and prefer to support local business, but feel it has gone downhill since management changed. Menu options were always limited but previously was more interesting. Now just basic bar choices. Burger was tasty but ordered medium rare, it came out medium. Bun was either out in the air all day or a few days past its prime. Fries overdone, while mushy inside. Server was friendly but overworked. We sat there 10 minutes before she came to the table. Meanwhile the bartender was standing literally 4 feet away chatting with her friends, ignoring us. She could have come over herself, or alerted the server, or even yelled over a "sorry, we will be over shortly". Bottom line, it is the only bar-restaurant in town and draws a crowd, but neither the food nor service are remarkable. read more

Just found out about this place. For whatever reason Valatie has a lot of casual "mom & pop" style eating choices - nothing fancy, just pretty good, friendly places. The Valatie Bar & Grill takes things up a notch with a menu that offers both the usual's - burgers, wings, etc. but ups the offerings by using as many locally produced products as possible, as well as organic, grass fed, and healthy add-ons. With their connection to Tierra Farms it makes sense that nuts and dried fruits make an appearance in lots of items - especially salads, and it's well worth it. Big bar, lots of tables - far and near and a bright, clean place with super nice, knowledgeable staff that make it clear they are interested in the success of the place. read more

Thrilled to have this addition to the nabe. The menu has some standard stuff and some that isn't, including surf and turf tacos, which were tasty. Plus the beer and booze selection is worthy and priced right, as is the food. I think the quality will continue to improve and I'll be returning to enjoy that upward curve. Always good food and attentive service. Ingredients are fresh. Grass fed burgers are great and their meatloaf is to die for. Fries are of the shoestring variety but never greasy and they don't skimp. Stopped by last week for a burger and a pint. After a 15-minute drive home, I spent the rest of the night recoiling from an excruciating case of food poisoning. When I recovered, roughly 36 hours later, I emailed the place -- not a complaint but a heads-up, since if it were my business I'd like to be kept abreast of such things. I expected a conciliatory reply, something along the lines of, "Sorry, hope you're feeling better." Nothing. In retrospect, this seems consistent with the attitude I've noticed in a half-dozen previous visits, where "regulars" get preferential treatment. Of course, to an extent, most restaurants and bars are like this; but in this case, perhaps management determined that replying was probably a waste of time, as I wouldn't be back.
