This is a true story. The DJ from Friday night (6/17) assaulted two women by throwing them down by their hair and then taunted the group who tried to stand up for them. He then took his shirt off to reveal a physique similar to an Olsen twin before putting on a lulu lemon tank top and then pouting and leaving the stage. Which was generally OK since his job was immediately replaced and improved upon by an unattended machine. Like I get losing your job at TGI Fridays was tough and you're just not selling as much detox juice and essential oils from your Facebook page as you used to - but you don't need to take it out on innocent women. Just want this establishment know that the self-righteous petulant pile of woman beating sh*t hurts their business. He's also honestly just a bad DJ; you would get better ratings if you had Nickelback frontman Chad Kroger doing slam poetry while hurling full beers at your patrons than with this emaciated, tone deaf millennial c*nt rag. I gave a second star because I fully enjoyed the chicken Caesar salad. read more

I forgot to finish my review after Wizard World Comic Con 2013. The afterparty was here. The drinks were fine, the service was acceptable (even though everyone seemed to be wearing their grumpy pants) but the DJ really sucked. He would play a song for like 30 seconds until the song was just about to get good and people were getting into it...then he would change it to something crappy that didn't even fit. Not to mention, are you serious about playing thug music for a bunch of comic convention nerds? Know your audience. The main reason I have to give this place 1 star is because they had the audacity to refuse letting people use the restroom near last call. I had not been down to 6th street in about 8 months so I missed out on the start of this new trend of not letting paying customers use the restrooms. Apparently, Maggie Mae's isn't the only place and it should be illegal to treat people so poorly. They announced last call and luckily I was already standing in line for my last drink. Well, it didn't matter because the waiter ignored me even though I was actually leaning on the bar for a good 15 minutes. Then they shut it down and I didn't get a damn thing. So I was pissed, said to my husband I was going to the restroom and then we could leave. I was blocked by 2 big bouncers who rudely told me the restrooms were closed, as well as all the other restrooms on the premises. I asked them exactly what did they expect me to do and they shrugged like they could care less and told me to try Roppolo's. I was pissed but had planned on going there anyway for a late night slice...then I got there and they had blocked their bathrooms from paying customers also. Thank god we were doing a stay-cation at a hotel only 4 blocks away otherwise I think I would've pissed myself. Thanks for trying to ruin my time. Someone needs to talk to the city about this. You shouldn't legally be allowed to sell people food or drink from a brick and mortar business and then not let them use your restrooms that are WORKING. What do they expect people to do? Go join the bums in peeing in the alley? Then get a ticket for it? Rage. read more

Was here for SXSW and went downstairs to use the bathroom, which was closed. I was then told that the entire bar is closed and kicked out. Incredibly unprofessional. With so much competition in the area it's unclear why anyone would choose to spend money at this craphole for melvins. read more

Here for a SXSW event on the roof. There is no bathroom accessible on the roof, so our friend attempted to walk downstairs to use the bathroom, but that is also the place where the line forms. She politely asked if she could use the bathroom and come back up and the bouncer kicked her out for asking. "I don't want to deal with this," he said. Really? I don't want to reward your failure to plan and general assholery with my money. Don't give asshole establishments your money -- it just encourages them. read more

i know bouncers have to put up with a lot and in general, i have no problem with them. however, the one at maggie mae's has to be the worst i've encountered. i tried to get in with my real driver's license and was rejected. he was a complete douche about it as well, and went on a huge power trip. read more

I like Maggie Mae's. I really do, but I'm giving a BAD review because of the lack of help I got from the employees there last weekend. Friday night we went there and were having a great time. I set my phone down, went about my business, and didn't walk out with it. I panicked around 2:15a Saturday because I thought I had put it in my purse - well I didnt, so I walked back to Maggie Mae's hoping for some assistance, and got rejected! I asked - no - BEGGED to be let back in to go look in the spot I last saw my phone. They refused, because they were closed and it was too bad for me, AND they didn't even offer to go look. I've called everyday since Saturday, and no one answers the phone, and there isn't a way to leave a message. I just want to know if my phone was turned in there. read more

Roof top is nice. Very spacious. However, I did not like the wait staff. When waiting in line, a gentleman blatantly and physically elbowed in front of me to get to the front of the line. Not only did the bartender witness all of this, but he went out of his way to serve the other gentleman first, even after I clearly ordered first. I'm sure they were "best of buds" but it was very unprofessional and I was very disappointed in the service. read more

First night in Austin and the adventure of Sixth Street. Ended up here because it was empty and we could sit away from the band. Don't do ear shattering, impossible to converse over music scenes. The bartender was very accommodating in finding me something to drink that wasn't beer or hard liquor. Both my husband and I were on our phones, posting pictures and I ended up dealing with a mini crisis going on at the home front. The bartender came over and placed down a bottle cap and motioned for me to read it. "Can you stop texting?" Asked "you're telling me not to text?" Body language looked like a yes to me. Time to go and that we did. Was very conscious for the rest of the evening of everyone on their phones (including bartenders) and it not being a problem at other establishments. First time I went I didn't think much of it because I was only going with a friend for her beer. Went again another day and got the worst treatment at the door. I handed my ID to the asshole who was checking, only to have him stare at it for an exceptionally long time, not even glancing at me, and telling me they can't serve me. I was confused and he told me that the ID wasn't mine. I was wearing makeup and contacts that day, of course I'm not going to look like what I look like in the ID. I said 'what' out of shock only to have this rude individual tell me "the fact that you didn't hear me shows that you've had too much to drink and that's why we can't serve you". Wait, so you can't serve me because of my ID or because of how i had "too much to drink"? He said it in a very condescending way, making me feel quite embarrassed to say the least. I asked my friends if anything seemed wrong about me and the only thing that they saw was that I was stumbling (mind you, my heels were no joke that night and brand new, so of course I would be stumbling). We are from Minnesota and are making our first trip to Texas. We are here for a wedding. We went to Maggie Mae's for a pre wedding celebration last night. One of our bartenders was Robert Lee Dickson. He is one of the hardest working most efficient people I have ever seen. I was so impressed with his work ethic I asked him if he was the owner of the bar. He said no he wasn't, to which I responded, "you work like you are". He was a human dynamo behind the bar. He was both entertaining and very attentive to us as customers. The man deserves a raise, a promotion, or both. You are very fortunate to have him as an employee. Made us feel welcome to be in Texas. Damn, this joint has bout 3-4 different dancefloors along with a huge screen/projector 4 music videos on the rooftop.

If they had food, you could have an entire evening out under one roof!! Live music and a pub/shot bar downstairs, DJ's, lounge and dance floor and a huge deck upstairs!! Staff is awesome and friendly, the DJ's rock, and there's just a feeling of "This is the place to be." I frequent here every chance i get. read more

3 stars.. but the only other burlesque experience i had was at The Slipper Room in NYC....which blew the top of my head loose... no OFF. The performers of Maggie Mays are beautiful and talented but there's more to burlesque then pulling off your gloves and exposing flesh. It could be better... it could be fantastical!!! read more

I used to frequent this bar in my college days. I used to love it! I've got to say that after this last visit, I will not be coming back simply because of the treatment I got from one of the bartenders...Natasha, I believe? It took an obscene amount of time to merely be acknowledged by her; however, the guys around me got ample attention. As a generous tipper and patient person, I was baffled. Furthermore, her attitude toward me once she did acknowledge my presence, was terrible. Not sure why she works in the service industry if she can't even get the basics of SERVICE down. read more

If I could give this less than one star, I would. I was recently (tonight) given what was called a "Matt Dillon" or a "Matt Damon" shot, depending on who you ask at this bar. This consists of ringing out the filthy bar mat that was used all night into a shot glass and given to a customer. I happened to be that customer tonight. What did I do to deserve this? I asked if I could buy two "ladies" a drink and they accepted. We talked for a bit, until I started to talk to the one that I was more interested in a bit more than the other. The "lady" that I was not talking to quite as much disappeared for a while, then came back with shots. The shot for me happened to be "the Matt Dillon". I took it, assuming it was something reasonable. It was at that point that this "lady" disappeared after a suspicious smile. I realized something was very wrong and went to find out more about the shot...I found her laughing with the bar tender and confronted her about it. She ran away because she knew I had figured it out, but I asked the bar tender what it was. He told me, and I asked how he knew, he said he saw her do it, then I asked how she got the cup and the mat...he said she took it...and he couldn't stop the 100 lb lady...anyway, I asked to see the manager, the bartender in question said ok and told me he was going to get him...he proceeded to disappear for the rest of the night (about 35 minutes or longer waiting for him). He obviously never reappeared. I was then asked to leave by another bartender at the close of the bar. I told him why I was waiting and he basically told me his manager wasn't going to come and wouldn't care any way. I was then rushed out of the bar like some belligerent drunk and completely disrespected. I am writing this immediately after this happened so that hopefully others can see just how coherent I am and how insulted I am that I was treated this way. I would urge everyone to avoid this bar, there are a great deal of excellent bars all around it, and there is no excuse for the employees of a bar to act like this. I am just a tourist to Austin, and this has soured my experience of an otherwise fun city. I will likely never come here again because of this experience. That's not how you treat a human being where I come from. read more

I like Maggie Mae's very much. However, after going there several times I invited a harmonica player friend to a Monday night jam hosted by Michael Milligan (who's a musician I've paid to see in other cities and consider myself a fan) . It took a little while to figure out who was running the jam. So I approached the table where this guy Leland was sitting and asked if he had the sign up sheet for the jam. He turned to me in a snarly way and with rude tone asked "who are you?". Stunned I introduced myself and said I brought a musician in for the jam. He said "this is a closed jam and has been for 20 years". I just walked away. Later his wife came to apologize for him, which disgusted me even more. Since then I have only been back once, that was to support a band "Birdlegg". This Leland guy is a toxic piece of shit and I have not gone to support Milligan or Maggie Mae's because of his toxicity. Ya'll should do yourself a favor and disassociate with this immaculate a-hole. read more

I would have to say it was a good night. Me and my wife was in town for the evening and we happened to come to Maggies. The door guy didn't yell at us like a carny he just greeted us at the door. After we got in side we took the only table by the window. And started to people watch. It was slow so the door guy that said his name was Matt started chatting us up. Asking bout our visit and why we were there. The street got very busy and the bar we were in that he called the pub did also. We watched the street and he talked to us when he had a chance. We stayed longer than we were going to because we started watching Matt talking to the long line of people in front of him. It was very crowded and full on the street and sidewalk. It was wonderful people watching. Then me and my wife saw how Matt was checking ids and talking to his line that stretched out into the streets and saw he was just as nice to the a holes in the crowd as he was to us. We watched him turn minors and fake ids away enough that we started talking bets about what Matt is going to do next. When there was a lole in the line he would chat us up again. We spent almost the whole night at that table hanging out drinking and people watching cause Matt made it a great night. If we're ever in town again. We will come back to the pub as he called it. read more

Thats strange because on Monday night Istopped there with my brother after work in My Melting Pot Server Clothes Bc My brother just came into town and we didnt have much time to get drinks. The Bartender upstairs "Lacey" Didnt care much to know what me and my bro were drinking 15 mins later after having an in-depth convo with fellow patrons while waiting for drinks she takes my brothers order for a tito's and red bull and my budwieser she charges 9.50 to his card which is rediculous for a monday night. I look at the time see we are running out so i went back up to get another round of drinks after waiting 10 minutes again it be 1:55a.m. I call the same exact thing she gives a 4 second pour and a splash of red bull and the same can of budwieser to me this time for a whopping $13.50 for two drinks "strip club prices" I knew something wasn't right so I asked my brother how much he paid, he stated $9.50 I walked downstairs asked the bartender downstairs how much those drinks run he told me a way cheaper price and than rudely said if thats howmuch she charged you there is nothing i can do. Thats obsurd I asked her showed her my brothers voucher and she just shrugged her shoulders. I have waited tables for a while and know how the service industry is better than some of the people she charged normal price and still didn't get a good tip. A tip for you Lacey you and your co-workers stop by the Melting Pot sometime this weekend and ask for the guy with the braids I'm the only that works there you remember me I tell you I'll go ahead and buy you and your buddies from Maggies Dinner out of my pocket as a kind gesture from your boy right down the street that treats service industry people correctly. read more
