Visited Effingham winery today and loved it! Beautiful grounds. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and fire pits to make it toasty on a fall day. We did th wine tasting, and I honestly loved them all. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We purchased a bottle of Celebration wine in the green bottle.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have other seating options in the manor house. Didn't check it out this time. They had The Little Lady food truck there today. We enjoyed the grilled chicken sandwich. Highly recommend people check it out. My husband and I visited on an early Friday afternoon. We shared a red and white flight, which let us select 3 reds and 3 whites. For whites we chose the sparkling, viognier, and petit manseng. For reds we chose the tannat, kings ransom, and Effingham reserve. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The sparkling was underwhelming (and I'm a huge fan of most sparkling wine) and our favorite by far was the petit manseng.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We enjoyed all the reds, especially the kings ransom.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]My husband mentioned interest in Snort, the port style wine, and they gave us a complimentary pour! It had nice flavor and was a lighter style[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. We enjoyed our flights outside with a beautiful view of the vines and also walked over to the koi pond (which was fascinating - actually a swimming pool turned koi pond) and sat on a comfy swing (seats were hammock-like). We also got a tour of the manor, despite the manor only being open on weekends. [[HIGHLIGHT]]5 star customer service, 3 star wine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They also have a fun bingo game this summer - if you get BINGO from activities at Effingham, Pearmund, and Vint Hill (all with the same owner) or fill the card, you get a wine glass or swag bag. My mom and I came for a wine tasting this past Tuesday, and had a wonderful experience. The grounds are beautiful, spacious, and detailed with lots of places to sit and relax and enjoy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sampled several delicious wines and I was impressed by the variety and depths of flavors.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We enjoyed snacks and took our time. The staff were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, and we enjoyed chatting with our server. I'd love to come back on a cooler day (it was in the 90s when we were there, so we opted for the air-conditioned inside space), so we can try the outdoor seating with with the firepits. The manor house is open on the weekends, so we'll try a weekend day in the future too to be able to see that too. read more

This historic winery was so cute and charming! We sat outside, overlooking the Manor House, which is over 260 years old. Effingham does an amazing job decorating for Halloween. It was the perfect Fall day! They offer a variety of cheese, meats, dips, and jams, along with pre-made charcuterie boxes. We ordered a charcuterie box and it was beautifully designed and everything was pre cut already, which made it more convenient. Not to mention, we were able to easily take our leftovers home! I ordered the wine flight consisting of their warm cider wine (which I loved, because it was made with white wine, when many other wineries use red), the celebration (sweeter blend of Vidal Blanc), and their Rose. I wasn't a huge fan of the rose but loved the seasonal cider and celebration! They offer various merchandise and items as well! read more

Checked out Effingham this past weekend and I was definitely impressed! It's a historic property that is beautifully preserved! You can do tasting in the wine hall, but we opted to do them in the historic manor! They had a fireplace going that made it super cozy and the woman who did our tasting was amazing! They have a great selection of wine that almost anyone can enjoy. We also grabbed a warm baguette, some cheese, and a bottle of Chardonnay while we explored the rest of the manor. The Koi pond was also such a unique touch! I'll definitely be back! read more

Delightlful winery on every level; excellent reds and the grounds are so romantic and inviting. So much history here; check out the manor (they let you visit with a mask of course). Ample parking, off the beaten path and you feel like you've taken a step back in the 1700/1800's. Super nice staff, lots of outdoors seating & nooks/crannies. Prices are comparable to other local VA wineries - worth the cost. They sell samplers and by the glass. Returned to Effingham w a couple friends to take advantage of the early spring weather. It was a little breezy and we were happy to see several fire pits lit up. After ordering 3 bottles of wine, we pulled up some chairs by the outdoor fireplace. The pits and fireplace are self serve with no signs indicating otherwise. I am a grown 50 yo man and don't believe I have ever been lectured by a woman for anything, and certainly for having too much wood in a fireplace that the "firebox can not support". Startled, we apologized. Not 5 mins later, a man comes out to comment on the fire, and sarcastically suggests we order more wine to supplement the cost and use of his firewood. 5 mins later, a different man comes out to offer HIS commentary. Seriously? We couldn't even sit in peace after being disrespected the first time. Here's an idea: if you don't want your patrons handling the wood, place a sign. Here's a better idea: how about utilize good customer service, tend to the wood for us, use the amount you find appropriate, and perhaps we might be happy to buy more wine vs leave a terrible review, and never return. How do you survive in Northern Virginia these days when you willingly offer poor service? Food for thought: At this rate, you might not. read more

This is a great place bc not only is it a beautiful winery but it has history and in essence is a mini museum. My bf is a history nerd and I love wine so this was a perfect fall date for us. Pretty sure it's also adult only which we were looking for. Wish dogs were allowed though Covid safe both inside and out. There were very few spots inside but the ones they do have look cute and comfy - big couch by fireplace, cute oversized chairs etc. we sat outside where the picnic tables were very spread out with red/green coasters on them to indicate sanitized va not yet fully cleaned. Grounds were beautiful. The entrance to the old Manor is lined with huge trees which is a great picture. One of the tress which was brought by lewis and Clark! They have an IG frame set up which frames the manor beautifully granted it's slightly tacky The staff esp inside the house is extremely knowledgeable and we enjoyed learning about things while also being able to take our wine and give ourselves a mini self tour. Adds a nice "activity" to just sitting and drinking (which there is nothing wrong with either!) Wine was pretty decent overall. They've won some awards. I wasn't overly impressed by anything. The wine was amazing but frank really made it special with how knowledgeable he was about the process, the wine itself, and miscellaneous anecdotes. Brian is our go-to TRA at Effingham. He's witty, knowledgeable and can slay the one ounce horizontal pour (just ask)! We loved the wines so much that we joined on the spot in September 2019. The Tannat (W/E Award Winner) is a very special wine. My husband, normally a Pinot Noir or Cab Franc guy, fell in love with this one. It's a bit of a splurge and no discounts are offered on it but it's worth it. We just wish is was closer than 45 minutes from home!! read more

I had a great visit here during their soft opening. The wines are their own, but the owner is the same gent who has Pearmund Cellars and several other locations. Since it was a Friday afternoon I had the place to myself. The location is a historic manor house and farm; you can tour (and even rent) the manor house but tastings are done in a new building. The crew was kind enough to give me a great tour of the place. One of the trees has a history of it's own, as one of two of its kind on the east coast. The owners believe it was a gift from participants of the Lewis & Clark expedition! Of course the 'main event' of a winery are the wines and here they excel. The grapes they use are not from the property but are all Virginia grown, and made by Pearmund's wine maker. Luckily this is a good thing since Ashton is awesome and there were a lot of wines to love. For whites, I really, really likes the Chardonnay; steel based and crisp. They had a few others but this was the stand out. The rose is AMAZING and I say his as someone who doesn't drink rose. They added some reisling which makes it stand out among other roses. For reds, my faves were the "Kings Ransom" red blend and the Tannat. Of course I'm a Tannat fanatic so this is to be expected. Although they just opened, I'll be back - probably several times. read more

Effingham Manor is a beautiful winery that has a lot to offer. Lets start with the venue, the tasting was done inside. It's a beautiful manor that dated from the 1767 and was restored and preserved( was told by one of the employee) . There are so much landscaping and plenty of tables to just sit and enjoy some wine and take in the view. Now lets get to the good stuff, the wines!! As we were a group of 6, our tour guide arranged for us to have a private tasting . I completely forgot the lady's name as this was our 3 wineries of the day lol . She was attentive and gave us a few pointers on how to pair each wine we were tasting. We fell in love with the King Ramsons and decided to buy a bottle, and aslo got a baguette with some cheese. Definitely will revisit this winery read more

Effingham Manor is in an unexpected location. If I lived in NoVa I'd be here all the time. The wine is pretty tasty, but really the views make the visit great. They have lots of little activities outside and places to sit and relax. The manor itself is pretty nice and the new addition is great as well. We've floated around various wineries in the area for years. Never had a bad wine here. And we never seem to leave without a few extra bottles. The environment is significantly quieter and more relaxed than other wineries. Service is very friendly. They have a great sense of humor about "effing" everything. Just want to start out by saying this is the sister winery to Pearmund Cellars and Vint Hill Craft Winery, so if you enjoy their wines you'll probably find something you like at Effingham Manor also, although they take care to ensure that all three wineries emphasize a different style of winemaking so that it's not just a repeat of what you find at the other wineries. That being said, Effingham Manor, though a relatively new winery (open less than a year) has something the others don't, history. Effingham Manor winery is housed on a beautiful historic estate dating to 1767. The Manor was built by William Alexander a great grandson of John Alexander, for whom the city of Alexandria is named. Although Effingham Manor is a relatively new winery the winemaker, Chris Pearmund, is an old hand, with over 25 years of experience. That experience really shows in the bounty of award winning wines produced by Effingham Manor. Their signature Bordeaux-style red, Kings Ransom, which is my personal favorite, recently won Gold at the State Fair of Virginia Wine Competition. They also produced an award winning white Traminette (a varietal of Gewurtztraminer). If neither one appeals, don't worry, Effingham Manor also produces a delightful Chardonnay and Rose that are perfect for summer sipping, as well as several other whites and reds of outstanding quality. Staff are friendly and approachable, there's plenty of room to enjoy a picnic or a fresh baguette and cheese. Been here twice now. Inviting, friendly service both times. Wines are consistent. Not a fan of the Chardonnay, but enjoyed the rest. Tasted 8 wines in the beautiful, historic 18th century home built by William Alexander. Spacious, sprawling grounds w/ ample outdoor seating covered or uncovered. There's a beautiful koi pond and another adjacent facility that I did not walk to, for events, tastings, etc. There is even a small slave quarters that they preserved that you're welcomed to peruse, which was eerily fascinating to step into. They do offer tours. Winery is spacious enough that even when busy, it did not feel crammed or obnoxious like some wineries can get. Can bring food, but no dogs or children. I love children, but works for me! I also love that it's relatively close to my home, which most wineries aren't. They also offer outdoor games like croquet and bocce ball as well as some indoor games if you choose to hang out in one of the numerous rooms upstairs. Very peaceful and accommodating facility. Going to try to enjoy this hidden gem as much as possible before it gets popular! read more

Service by the wine tender was very good, but three other employees who seemed to be at a higher level not so hospitable. One employee walked by us two times without a word. After a weekend of subpar service we were DELIGHTED with our experience at Effingham Manor. George was our tasting guide and went out of his way to make our visit an exceptional experience. Had a good time here, wines were ok, grounds were nice. But PS. Kids aren't allowed here. ... it's adults only, but that isn't publicized well on the website at least not as of today. A lady approached us as we walked in. She tactfully informed us it was a 21 and up winery...meaning adults only, but that we could stay anyway this time. Initially thought 21 and up meant, duh you need to be 21 to drink wine--didn't sink in that it meant no kids allowed until I read the FAQs after we were confronted. Before choosing to go there, I read the website, and didn't recognize that I couldn't go there with young kids. I understand why a winery would want to identify as adults only, just saying you should advertise that better; and on a different day, I would have walked out of there and never gone back. I certainly could have driven a little farther to another winery where I could sit in peace, drink some wine, and still have my kids with me (since I can't exactly dump them off somewhere along the road). I stayed, had some wine outside, but I wouldn't go back. I go to adults only resorts...but those are clearly labeled adults only! I'm kinda stuck there as those feelings overtook any thoughts I had about the wine. read more

Beautiful large property to spend an afternoon. They sell picnic foods, had live music, have wifi and all the employees were very friendly. The tasting room wasn't crowded which was nice. I wasn't a fan of the wines, which were pricey, and I wished they had a sweet one. I did a tour of the main house built in 1767 but was disappointed none of the upstairs rooms had bedroom furniture to show how it was used. They have a building on the property called the old slave house made out of brand new materials. Why on earth would someone rebuild a place that people who were unfairly treated suffered in? Yeah let's make the new private tasting room have a name that celebrates a bad part of history. I personally don't like seeing slave quarters at wineries in northern VA, plus I feel there's not much to "see" as they are just one room cabins and a tiny kitchen. But I understand some people may want to see that original structure as part of history, so to each their own. But a building with bright white siding called the slave quarters is an unnecessary title for a renovated building with plumbing. They could have a plaque on the wall saying the original structure used to be the slave quarters, but to sign up for a tasting and be told your party will be held in the slave quarters is weird. read more
