Magpie is my all time favorite cafe in Baton Rouge. The atmosphere is quaint, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Their cups of coffee are topped with fresh designs created from cream, such as a leaf. Try their homemade ice cream sandwiches if you get a chance! Magpie offers a unique selection of local and organic items that are hard to find anywhere else. The eclectic menu offers things such has homemade pop tarts, paleo quiche and a delicious breakfast casserole. The coffee is special to Magpie is great. Parking can be a bit of hassle and they are not always well prepared for large crowd at a time, so if you see line a expect to wait a little while. But it will be well worth the wait. read more

Super yummy and so cute inside and out! Stupidly, I actually forgot to get some coffee, one of the reasons I wanted to try it so badly. Ah, just one of those days! I did order an open face turkey avocado sandwich which was awesome, especially the homemade bread! It also came with a nice size side salad. I started making Magpie Cafe my go-to place for coffee in the morning a few months back. They turned me on to Intelligentsia coffee, which is fantastic. I usually just get a cafe au lait, to-go, and occasionally a scone or biscuit, which are all very good. Customer service and attention to detail is what I really like about this place. After going and ordering the same coffee multiple times over a couple weeks, the baristas started having my coffee ready before I even placed my order. Not something I expect every time, but it's nice to know that people are paying attention. Keep up the good work!! read more

Great little place. I had the espresso which was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. JusMy wife had the pour over coffee, which was also very flavorful. The courtyard is very nice and a great place to enjoy some afternoon coffee. They also have breakfast and lunch. I didn't try any food, but it all looked very good. Thank goodness Baton Rouge has Magoie.... Lina and James are committed to local and have created a great neighborhood spot where everyone knows your name. For breakfast try the breakfast casserole... Sausage egg and cheese that is crusty on the outside and soft and meaty on the inside.... So bad for you but so good. The food is decent, but the people are really rude and not helpful at all. They don't have a menu, and prices aren't openly listed. I had the Hummus panini, which was ok, and their salad of the day had peaches that weren't ripe enough to eat. I used to work as a barista in a coffee shop, and the coffee at Magpie's is the BEST quality i have ever tasted. I'm so glad that BAton Rouge has a place where I can find non GMO, locally, organic food. It takes a long time for them to make fresh juice, though. Got an Iced Vanilla Latte with Almond milk and an extra shot and the vegan cookie. The latte is exactly what I was looking for, vanilla creaminess and a chocolatey espresso aftertaste. The vegan chocolate chip cookie was superb as well. The barista behind it all was fast as well. Would definitely recommend this. read more

It has been time to update my review of Magpie for a long while now, pretty much ever since the second location opened downtown. We used to love this place and were here regularly (as anyone who knows me would vouch for) but lately, it has just been so inconsistent that we don't go as often because we are tired of being disappointed and feeling like we are overpaying for food here. For whatever reason(s) the food has just been sub par lately and the items we used to be able to bet on being good most of the time are no longer consistently prepared. For example, the scones are smaller than they used to be and often overcooked, the muffins dry, and the quiches have been highly inconsistent (sometimes overly salty or not enough salt, under or overcooked, etc.) Also, something that has always bugged me is the practice of making a cake on say a Wednesday, advertising it on social media, and then there still being some available on Friday but sold for the same price as it was on the day it was freshly made. That just doesn't make sense and isn't fair to the paying customer--I have ordered a piece of cake days old before only to find it was not as good and pretty dry. The coffee is still good here and there are a couple of staff members left that we know and love, so I'm sticking with the 3 of 5 stars for now. We have met many great people who have worked here and have literally made friends with some of them who are no longer employed here so we will forever be grateful for the good times at Magpie and hope for better consistency in the future. However, with District Donuts moving in and offering great coffee (with better parking options,) we now have a closer place to get great coffee from. The Baton Rouge cafe and restaurant scene is finally growing and every business should be stepping up their game, diners appreciate quality, originality, and consistency. read more

It used to be the coffee place to go to a few years ago when it opened up. I would go so far as to say it redefined the coffee market in baton rouge. However, of late the standards seem to have declined. Cappucino cups are only filled up to 70-80%. The extra design touches are missing. I've heard rave reviews about the food about Magpie Cafe, but I unfortunately didn't get to taste it. As I waited in line, I heard the girl heating up the food tell a friend, "I saved the largest piece of quiche for you." It is very obvious that this restaurant takes care of those they know. I ordered a breakfast ham and cheese muffin, watched the girl behind the counter place it on the grill, paid for the muffin, and watched the cashier place my ticket on a plate to reserve the muffin for me. I waited at least 10 minutes for the muffin. When the girl heating up the food brought out two ham and cheese muffins to her friends, who came after I arrived, I asked where my muffin was. She informed me that she had oversold the muffins and offered me a quiche instead. I declined and asked for a refund. If she had indeed run out of muffins when I ordered, I would have not been upset. However, since she did not want her friend to be without a muffin, she chose to serve her friend over me. I hope the friendship lasts, as she just cost Magpie Cafe a customer. read more

I hate that I have to give this review, because I truly love the food and the atmosphere of Magpie (both locations) and was so excited when the downtown location opened. But I just had a terrible service experience this morning that compelled me to write this. I took an out-of-town guest here for lunch, and we arrived a little over an hour before we had to leave for the airport. I didn't realize they served brunch on the weekends, so instead of ordering at the counter you wait to be seated and a server comes to you. It took our server a good 10 minutes to come to us (only after we inquired at the front and informed them we had a flight to catch). A few minutes after taking our order, he returned because he had forgotten half our order. Not confidence inspiring. Another half an hour passes, so concerned about time, we flag him down and ask how the food is coming and tell him about the flight-time issue. He comes back from the kitchen and says it will be 30-45 minutes - the kitchen is completely backed up. Mind you, the place is only half full. The manager comes over and is very nice and tells us yes, it will really be 30-45 minutes but they can box it up for us. We don't even have that long at this point, we have to leave for the airport in 10 minutes, so my guest walked out after an hour with a scone and a cookie. Magpie covered the cost of her coffee, which was nice of them, but I felt they should have discounted the cost of those other items, too. I just find it so unacceptable that their kitchen would back up and be unable to deliver food within a reasonable amount of time. If you know it's going to be so long, come around and tell your tables - don't keep them in the dark - flight or no flight. No one likes sitting forever waiting for food, feeling forgotten about. read more

This is the only coffee place I would recommend in Baton Rouge. The coffee is excellent, and the pastries are addicting. The staff is knowledgeable about their coffee and very welcoming. I would highly recommend the cinnamon roll and a latte made with the specialty espresso. Cute, rustic atmosphere with great music taste. Great place to study or read. I stop at Magpie whenever I'm going through Baton Rouge. Their selection of coffee is quite nice, and their baristas do a very good job with the V-60 pour overs. As far as the food goes, I've had their pastries (which were tasty), but none of the more substantial offerings. There are a good number of parking spots, but I've had to park under the interstate during busy periods (but even that isn't so bad; it's less than a block's walk). Yes, please. -- Fantastic atmosphere - local artists' work grace the wall, reclaimed wooden accent wall, lots of nice, creative types coming in and working on their laptops, etc. -- Free wifi, lots of outlets - I've camped out here to work on my thesis many a time (too many, actually.. womp womp) -- Great iced mocha, yum The only downsides are their food is pretty pricey (it kind of has to be, but it does mean this is more of a treat than a go-to lunch spot for this poor grad student), and they close pretty early (so not so good for after work or class study sessions). read more
