My friend wanted Indian for lunch. so we went to check out Maharaja since I had it on my bookmark forever. I was really surprised they actually had lunch buffet on Saturdays and Sundays as well..so it was good that we didn't have to order anything specific and got to try many of the dishes that we couldn't eat so often. I hadn't eaten Indian food so often, so I was happy I got to have a variety of curries and carbs again. It was very satisfying and hit the spot for me...although..as usual..you can easily get so sleepy after such heavy meal! The ambiance was nice and clean and the food had nice spice in it. Staff were also attentive and I thought the price was just right (around $45 for 2 ppl, including taxes but excluding tips). The buffet is divided into 3 sections- vegetarian, non vegetarian and salad/ desserts. The salad fixings were minimal. The vegetable soup was nice. The food was okay. The naan was overdone. The dessert selection was minimal. I can get sliced apples and melon at the market. The decor is nice but booths are very dark , high and uncomfortable. I did not feel welcome the entire time i was there. My overall experience was lacking .The buffet( for what it is) is way overpriced-$18.99!!! I will go to other indian buffets in town. read more

Loved this place the first time we ate here the first week they opened a year ago, food and service were great but not so much this last time. The place was already looking a bit run down and the service was lacking. Food was okay but the lamb wasn't very tender. We had to remind our sever for our drinks and papadum which took too long. This is a few blocks from my house and I've been curious. Curiousity didn't quite kill the cat, but it's not awesome. The buffet has a lot of things but most are mediocre. There are several kinds of cooked chicken, which were mostly dried out. The Chicken Tikka Masala was okay. The nan were good but were gone until the very end of my meal. The servers run around a lot but I literally had to stop one walking by to get a soda. The manager(owner?) seemed distracted and irritated. I literally had to wait 10 minutes while he slowly, very slowly, cashed out 3 other groups. Awesome garlic na'an and chicken tikka masala or butter chicken spiced just right are the stars here. The people employees here are super friendly, and although I was doing takeout I was really surprised at how clean and large the dining area was. I will dine in the next time I swing through town if I don't have my dogs with me. The portions are huge, and although I really like a good chicken tikka masala I will share my wife's butter chicken as it had a better flavor then my regular go to, and with portion sizes this big there is no reason a single portion wouldn't serve two. I was eager to see where Maharaja fit in, but unfortunately, this experience was a royal disappointment. Let's start with the one, unambiguous positive: the **portion sizes**. They do not skimp. My entree was a veritable mountain, and my friend's dish was equally generous. You will not leave hungry, which I suppose is something. But that's where the compliments end. The food itself was just... mediocre. I was shocked by the profound **lack of flavor**. We ordered a classic Tikka Masala and a Lamb Vindaloo, and both were stunningly one-note. The masala was watery and tasted mostly of cream, with no complex spice profile. The vindaloo, which should be a punchy, vibrant, spicy-sour curry, was just... hot. No depth, no nuance, just heat for heat's sake. It was the kind of bland, uninspired food you'd expect from a generic food court, not a dedicated restaurant. The real kicker? The **price**. When you're charging premium prices for entrees (upwards of $20+ before you even *think* about naan or rice), the food has to deliver. This did not. It felt wildly overpriced for the quality. To round out the lackluster meal, the **staff was completely unhelpful**. When we asked for a recommendation, our server just vaguely pointed at the menu and said, "Everything is popular." We have been passing this place by and finally we planned to stop at Maharaja for dinner. First of all, the decor was absolutely eye catching from the murals to the pictures hung on the walls and the lamps and light fixtures, there was joy surrounding all the patrons. All the servers were nice, friendly, attentive, and periodically asking us how things were going and how food was. We ordered the chicken pakora for our appetizer. The crispiness of the chicken and the sauces were perfect. For our entrees we got the chicken vindaloo and the lamb biryani with the mandatory spicy naan. The spicy naan was covered in red chile with enough spice to get us going. It was not a heavy naan, but also not thin; it was a great help for the entrees. The chicken vindaloo was spicy, acidic, not overwhelming, and quite tasty with tender and juicy chicken pieces. The rice was subtle in flavors, complimentary to the dish, and allowed the vindaloo to shine. The biryani was fragrant and had a complex flavors. There was heat, sweet, and herbal flavors that hit at different times during the experience. The lamb cubes were tender and delicious. The cooking was on the rustic side, with cloves, anise, and date seeds that may get in the way but add to the dish. For the quality, taste, and amount of food, the price was exceptionally reasonable. I had to come check out the newest addition to Indian cuisine in town. The location is a bit off the beaten path and the layout of the place is a bit odd, such that I wasn't sure I was walking into their actual front door. That said, the place is nicely decorated and all the staff are really friendly. I did appreciate that water came with its own pitcher per table, as did our hot chai. Better than having to constantly ask for refills if you go through the beverages quickly! We came explicitly for the buffet which they have for dinner on the weekends. It's pretty extensive, there's a meat and vegetarian section, plus a section with salad and cold desserts. The hot desserts hide near the end of the main buffet, so don't miss them! I tried a variety of the vegetarian dishes and also the butter chicken (my meat downfall). It was all very tasty. I was a bit surprised at the saag paneer, it had more of a sweet flavor than I've been used to. Everything was very tasty, I'll definitely be back! read more

Cannot recommend this place enough. When I walked in, it smelled like home, and I knew the food was going to be delicious. I was not disappointed in the slightest. Not only was the food incredible and properly spicy, but the service was above and beyond. When they found out my mom was from Gujarat, they unprompted brought out onions, chili, and lemon because they know that is how Gujarati's like to eat their meals. The interior is aesthetically pleasing, spotless, and you can tell that they took care into making that space extremely hospitable. And the food has always been a 8-10/10. The buffet was fresh, clean, and well stocked. The other times I ordered individual meals they were always extremely flavorful, hot, and fresh. The Garlic Naan and Saag are always my favorites. I've tried several other dishes that have wonderful depth to them and are extremely well made. You can tell the dishes are made with passion for the craft. The service is fantastic. I really appreciate the care that is shown for every table that comes in, by every employee. I've had a few people taking care of me at each of my visits and all of them have made me feel welcome and taken care of. Do you remember the movie "What About Bob?" Remember the scene when Bob has dinner with Richard Dreyfuss's family, and he's going "Mm. Mmmm. MMMMMMM!!" after every bite? Well, that was me after every bite of the goat saag at Maharaja. What a beautiful combination of bone-in goat, pureed spinach, cream, and spices. My husband's lamb sheekh kebab was delicious as well, nicely seasoned and cooked in a tandoori. Most people we saw chose the buffet, which had a good balance of meat and vegetarian dishes. Having tried most of the Indian Restaurants in the area, a new one is a definite stop. In a strip mall and unassuming exterior belies what is inside. Opulent interior, someone spent a lot of time planning this one. Great painted walls and well place lighting for effect. Ok, but how's the food? Well excellent - Lamb Curry - delicious, nice spicing & tender lamb. Tikka Masala Chicken - flavorful and swimming in a rich tomato based sauce. The rice was simple but fluffy. The dishes came out family style providing opportunities to try both. The Garlic Naan was excellent, heavily butter coated with ample garlic flavor. The Strawberry Lassi was thick & good. It was like drinking a strawberry shake. Service was good and the chef/owner rounded frequently to check on diners. An excellent dining experience. I really enjoyed this brand new spot. The location is a little random, but you walk in and it's a whole different world. They have an extensive menu with lots of good options for entrées, appetizers, and desserts. They also have a really good drink menu at what I consider affordable prices. This was a good find I'd recommend! The entrees here were flavorful but small. This is a great venue for family-style dining, which is what my dining companion and I did. We had the garlic naan, which was freshly baked; chicken korma, which was mild and creamy; and Aloo Gobi, which is a vegan potato and cauliflower dish that had some oil in it. I've been here a number of times, and I have tried the buffet and ordered off the menu. The servings are generous. I really like the onion kulcha, seekh kebab, and gulab jamun so far, and my roommate and I will often split a dish and have been trying a lot of them. They also have tissues on the table which is really helpful if you have a low heat tolerance but still want to eat a spicy dish! They also have really good raita. It's a big space that feels roomy without being super echoey which is nice. They're always super welcoming and the service is as good as the food. read more

Went to Maharaja for the first time today. Upon entering, the decor is stunning. Someone went to a lot of time and effort to make the dining space luxurious and inviting. Decided to try the buffet. I enjoyed the food very much. The variety of dishes had different spice levels and each had their own depths of flavor. The interior dining area was immaculate as well as the restrooms. Maharaja means Prince in Sanskrit... Hubby and I showed up here post workout for their dinner buffet and literally felt like royalty! From the glittery lights on the ceiling to the cleanliness of both the dining room and bathroom to the attentive service staff to the absolutely delicious veg and non veg food items (samosas!), tandoori chicken, and other options as well as mango custard and a liquidy rice pudding, which paired so well with the cheesecake slices. I had such high hopes for this place and was sadly disappointed. The good, the cabbage was amazing however the jalfrezi was bland and flavourless, the sauce was gloopy and thickened with flour. The butter chicken tasted like it was just swimming in tomato soup and was also flavourless. A good.. the gulab jumun was delicious. I did a valiant effort to eat my body weight in them to make up for the bland other offerings. I will be back in a month or two for a second go round. I hope they step up their flavours. read more

Interior is spacious but curries leave a bit to be desired. They tasted a bit bland, as if the masalas were ground ten years ago. The malai kofta, saag paneer, and goat vindaloo lacked the complex zing, and the portions are small. Try Kebab and Curry on Eubank instead of you're craving Northern Indian food. read more

This new Indian restaurant - they opened in early September 2024 - is an astounding jewel of a place. Everything, from the beautiful restaurant to the exquisite food they serve, is so lovingly assembled and offered that it's clear the owners have put their own heart and soul into this establishment. Highly recommended - especially the paneer pakore, and the lamb korma! From the moment you walk in, it's impossible not to notice: this restaurant is superbly well designed and decorated: sturdy tables of beautiful blue and grey marble, lovely understated murals on the walls, and brilliant shining chandeliers and light fixtures. And all of this comes together so tastefully, with many wonderful and clearly well-thought touches: the blue leather-bound menus, comfortable benches and chairs, the carefully printed numbers on each table. The plates and table settings even have lovely little monograms of the restaurant's insignia. The beautiful setting is matched by stellar table service: friendly, smiling waitstaff guide you to your table and help you select food for the evening. All this is just prelude to the food, however. As an appetizer, we chose the paneer pakore - delicately seasoned, battered and fried pieces of paneer cheese. The accompanying sauces were flavorful and piquant; I'd never had this dish, but it was wonderful. As a main dish, I got the lamb korma. I have had korma all over the United States and England; but this was the most delicious and perfect korma I have ever tasted: a sweet, buttery cream sauce, accented with roasted and chopped cashews and tiny golden raisins. And the lamb! - tender, succulent pieces of meat infused with the korma. It is hard to cook lamb this well - I have tried! - and I was delighted to enjoy such expert culinary craftsmanship. We didn't try dessert, but judging from everything else I expect it to be wonderful. They also offer a selection of Indian drinks, from mango lassi to Limca - my selection, an Indian version of Sprite, though it tastes a bit different; I liked it quite a bit and enjoyed it with my meal. They note on their menu that they will offer beer and wine soon, so I expect their liquor license is on the way. What a wonderful restaurant this is. I highly recommend it, for authentic food cooked carefully and expertly by a chef from Punjab. I'll be returning - Albuquerque is lucky to have such a place, and I plan to enjoy this privilege as often as I can. read more

Maharaja is huge and beautiful, with chandeliers and big windows, comfy booths and lots of tables. Service was friendly and attentive. We started with pakoras, which were beautifully presented on a long plate with little dishes of tamarind and herb chutneys. They were a little less crisp than I expected, but the flavor of the batter was among the best I've tasted. The black dal was rich, buttery, and soothing, an excellent complement to the invigorating lamb vindaloo. At first I thought it wasn't spicy enough, but the heat built quite satisfyingly.
