We've been meaning to try this place for years, as it is right down the street from my parents in-laws house. It was quiet on a rainy Sunday night- just us and 2 other people. We really liked the chicken tikka masala and the vegetable Samosas with tamarind and cilantro sauce. The naan and basmati rice were also good. Baighan barta (eggplant) was ok- not the best I've had but good. Tasty gulab jamun for dessert. Definitely worth checking out! read more

The food was just okay overall. Unfortunately, some of the items on the appetizer plate came out raw, which was very disappointing. While they did remove the item from the bill, it still impacted the experience. The restaurant was pretty empty, and after this visit, I can understand why. Omg the food was amazing! Possibly the best Indian food I've had in a while. My husband got the chicken vindaloo & I got the Aloo ghobi. I didn't get any pictures because it smelled so good we tore into it immediately also it was a hit with my picky 2 yr old. Since moving to Elk Grove, this has been our spot when we are craving delicious Indian food. The people that work there are warm and welcoming. The food is consistently good. The price is good for the quality and quantity of food. We usually get chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo, and Aloo Gobi. All of them are great choices if you are starting out and do not know what to try. Recently we tried their chicken momos and those are to die for. A staff member (old lady with black hair and glasses) repeatedly questioned whether the order was mine, even after I showed proof in the app, and continued to speak to me in a condescending manner that made it feel like I was being treated as if I were lying. I was also told utensils were included made sure to ask before I left, but they were not when I opened my bag and when I returned, the dismissive attitude continued, she questioned me again if I made the order and then said ALL THEY HAD WAS SPOONS. I ordered from here using a delivery app because we had a gift card and our usual spot for Indian food wasn't listed on the app. I've never been here before but we were just ordering chicken makhani which is a pretty standard dish so I figured it should be pretty hard to get wrong. The plus side was that it arrived fast and it arrived steaming hot. It was a bit sloppy packaging though, with containers falling over, could've been solved if they just used two bags. But unfortunately it was missing my naan bread! I was bummed since this is my go to whenever I eat butter chicken. I don't mind having rice but the rice was very dry and had a bit of a bite to it so I think it was either undercooked or maybe stale. The butter chicken sauce was awesome but how can you go wrong with anything with butter! But the chicken did have some chewier pieces of fat and I had to spit those out. (Editing to one star...when we ate our last container of butter chicken it literally had bones in it) After our meal arrived I noticed that our order was adjusted for an extra charge. No idea why, but it didn't matter since I had to get a refund for the missing naan anyway. Maharani has been around for some time and all I have to say is, do. not. sleep. on. this. place. I can't believe I've only been there twice now. Everything was soooooo good. There was not a single thing I didn't like. Tried the Onion Bhujia which reminded me of an onion bloom from steakhouse restaurants, the vegetarian and lamb samosas, lamb curry, fish rheshmi, chicken tikka masala, chicken biryani, and the garlic naan. Their garlic naan may be the best garlic naan I've ever had. It was so flavorful, and the texture of the naan was light and fluffy. I had been eyeing this place for a few months and never really stopped. But after speaking to my good friend who lives in the vicinity I decided to give it a try. I was originally drawn because of the buffet which unfortunately they no longer offer :( However they do have meals that are reasonably priced. Upon entry I was greeted by the hostess who was very friendly and welcomed me into the restaurant as I mentioned it was my first time there. She went over the menu options and suggested a couple of choices. I was not disappointed and the food was delicious. Their samosas were huge, I have ordered them before at another establishment and they seem to have shrunk with time. The place is small and cozy, but very bright and lots of parking. I eat at Maharani Indian Restaurant whenever I visit Elk Grove, CA. I really enjoy their food. Why?-it is not to spicy-always fresh-and a great value! The food is so much better than other Indian restaurants I have tried (and I have tried many). Is it authentic?-I don't know as every restaurant I've tried is different with no consistency. It is family owned and operated and has been here for many years. The buffets are great. Tonight I had dinner here with family members (who are regulars). The lamb, coconut shrimp, rice, Nan bread and everything else was outstanding (See Picture). I especially like their mango specialty iced drinks. A few other reviews mentioned poor or rude service, charging the wrong price or being rushed. I have never experienced this. Everyone who works there has been polite, attentive and welcoming. I have never been charged more than the advertised price. Every take out has been fine-no issues. The restaurant and the grounds are very clean and is set up to provide a warm, welcoming experience. I've been to many Indian restaurants, but this place is currently #1 on my list. I was craving masala dosa one night and there were only two restaurants on DoorDash that serve this dish near where I live-- I decided to order from here and I was blown away by the flavors of the potato filling, sambar and chutneys-- Wow. After trying their dosa, I've been ordering food from here via DoorDash 3-4 times a week-- I'm hooked! I'm a vegetarian, so I've had their shahi paneer, matter paneer, malai kofta and their chicken makhani (sub chicken for paneer) and oh my goodness-- All these dishes were bursting with different flavors-- I feel like other Indian restaurants all have the same flavors, so the food becomes mundane and nothing special-- I was getting over ordering Indian food until I ordered from here. I also appreciate how rice comes with the curries free of charge; the rice itself is fluffy and comes with peas. Also, every time I order, I order the bhatura versus the naan-- Their bhatura is EVERYTHING! Soft, fluffy and not overly greasy. I also order the curries spicy/ hot and it's the perfect amount of heat! I should add, I'm currently obsessed with their chicken makhani (sub chicken for paneer)-- I've ordered it three times since Saturday (don't judge me, ha). If you're planning to try this place, try their makhani and instead of naan, try their bhatura-- You won't regret it! Went here for dinner last night with an Indian friend, who obviously knows the good places in the area to eat. The place was full of other Indians--one family, one couple, one large group clearly having some sort of festive party. So clearly the food is good! And I (with my American-born palate) would concur: utterly delicious. We had the paneer bhuji and the veg appetizer platter to share, and everything was delicious. Will definitely be back!
