Some locations have come and gone over the years, but this South Sac spot has stayed pretty consistent. The food is classic Pakistani style. Nothing fancy, just straightforward, well-executed dishes. I have had a lot of their menu and most of it hits. The kabobs are always a strong choice, the biryani is flavorful and satisfying, and the chicken tikka masala is decent. Not the best I have ever had, but definitely solid enough to enjoy. It is not mind blowing food, but it is reliable. You know what you are getting, and more often than not, it delivers. One thing I will say is that not all locations are the same. The Natomas one, for whatever reason, just does not hit the same. This South Sacramento location is the one to go to if you want a good experience. The vibe is pretty casual and no frills, which fits the food. Needs to learn how to greet or attend customers. If food is running late let the customer know just don't have them sitting at table for ever. Stop giving Vip culture like in India or Pakistan for your regular customers. Just have at least one or more of your damn employees take some classes in hospitality. I just wanted to share some honest feedback. I recently ordered the chicken biryani from your restaurant, and unfortunately I was quite disappointed. When I got home and opened the order, it was mostly plain rice with only two very small pieces of chicken. In the past your food used to be much better and the portion of chicken was reasonable, which is why I chose to order again. I'm not sure if something has changed recently, maybe the chef or the way portions are prepared, but lately it feels like the dish contains far more rice than chicken. As a customer, that's disappointing because chicken biryani should have a proper balance between the rice and the chicken. I hope you take this feedback seriously and review the portion quality, because many customers order expecting the same quality you used to serve before. Underrated spot for Indian food. For our tab, it came out to around $19 per person. This was a perfect amount of food of us and it was so fulfilling. My group and I are pretty basic, so we just order butter chicken, tikka masala, basmati rice, and garlic naan. I enjoy eating the tikka masala more for the spice factor, it was absolutely delicious and flavorful. I am not a big fan of the chunky chicken pieces, but it's not that big of a deal (just preference). The naan is crispy and slightly charred, perfect amount of garlic. If I could I would give them 0 stars. We waited almost 20 mins for our food thinking oh they're taking a while because the food will be great and at a right temperature. The biryani was cold and the rice was so hard. I could barely taste any masala in it. There was no raita with the biryani until we asked for it and that also tasted like expired milk. I also ordered the chicken tandoori leg and that was cold as well. When we asked the waiter about it he said he can warm up the biryani but there is nothing else he can do about it. The chicken tandoori leg was the same option. Like no, i don't want microwaved food. If i wanted that i would buy food from a freezer at Walmart and warm it up at home. There was no customer service or anything offered, then he suggests that we wait another 20 mins for another chicken tandoori leg, at that point we have already lost our appetite. If you want to be treated with DISRESPECT and no manners then Shalimar is the place for you. I gave them an extra star because the beef nihari was delicious and they're lucky they have a chef who knows what they're doing in the kitchen. The restaurant itself is like you walked up to a mafia boss establishment with tinted windows and terrible signage. Walked in, don't get greeted, told to sit anywhere, gave us 3 menus when there's 5 of us. Plates, napkins, and silverware were handed at the end of the table. We order our food and slowly, the dishes come out and basically thrown on the table with ZERO indication of what dish was just placed on the table. I asked what this is, the guy replies "Chicken". I ordered two chicken dishes, would have been nice to know which one. Then another order comes in a to-go box. Sets it down and says "Boti". I'm supposed to know which platter when we ordered 2 different ones? and if we're dining in the restaurant, why are the platter dishes being served in to-go trays? As we wait for each dish to arrive, I notice our server constantly scratching his head and goes into the kitchen. Is he washing his hands before touching the dishes? I extremely doubt it. Customer service doesn't exist. Etiquette doesn't exist. There's tons of halal options in Sacramento, this place doesn't deserve my money or business if they choose to treat their customers this way. This type of behavior should not be made into the norm for these halal indian/pakistani restaurants. Be nice and you'll be blessed with customers and tips. Our friend ordered to-go food over the phone and was told food will be ready in 45 mins. When we arrived, we still had to wait another 15 mins. Very slow service. Only indoor dining available. The goat curry is to die for! We got medium and it was spicy. Beef curry and chicken biryani were also good. I didn't get to try the tandoori chicken but I'm not that into chicken dishes. Has its own parking lot and restaurant is a decent size to accommodate large parties. Decor is blah & they use paper plates for dine-in customers, which is pretty tacky but we will let it pass this time. Food was excellent- we tried the Vegetable Pakora, Chana Masala, Garden Salad, Raita, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Tikka Leg, Naan (3), Plain Rice & for dessert we had Gulab Jamun. All dishes were cooked with the perfect amount of spices, fresh ingredients and we enjoyed every dish. The food is always great here . They have some of the best fish pakora in the area, whenever I come with the family , it is a must that we order it. For dinner we decided to order a goat karahi , daal gosht, and chicken tikka boti kabob. Everything was flavored beautifully, the chicken tikka kabob had that smokey, charcoal flavor to it while still remaining juicy and tender . Naan and roti (whole wheat bread) were baked properly and used as the perfect utensils to eat our salan (curry) with.
