Friday, June 10 at 5:15pm. After a satisfying rum tasting experience at Koloa Rum, my wife and I headed over to Maliki Lounge to try the Koloa Rum MaiTai (per the recommendation of a Koloa Rum). Upon entering the lounge, my wife and I decided to sit in the teal couch located near the back of the lounge (in direct view of the bar area). Since Happy Hour had just ended, the large crowd at the bar left leaving a somewhat empty lounge. Equipped with my signature smile (my close friends always comment on the fact that I have an infectious smile), I greeted the bartender and ordered a MaiTai for myself and a margarita for my wife. After leaving my card at the bar(we were prepared to indulge in quite a few beverages), I presented my wife with her drink as we engaged in conversation on the comfortable couch. As we consumed our beverages, we noticed that a small crowd of folks began making their way into the lounge (I have to add that these individuals were not seated at the bar). As we arrived to the sad conclusion of our delicious drinks, I began to wonder when an employee would stop by and ask if we were ready for another (or simply just provide the bare minimum of customer service by checking in with us). Initially I assumed that staff only provided service to patrons that were seated at the bar. However, I observed that some of the individuals seated in close proximity to us were receiving service. I looked at my watch and observed that a whopping 20 minutes had passed since we finished our drinks. During that 20 minutes I observed patrons receiving additional drinks and receiving food. During this time, I also began questioning my sanity. As each patron was checked on by an employee, I began to wonder if my wife and I had gone on to the afterlife and were invisible. The final straw was when an employee walked past us after checking in with another couple. I'm not one to pull the race card; however, I couldn't help but think that race played a factor because the other patrons were Caucasian (White). At this point I was ready to remove myself and my wife from this disgusting environment, and made my way to the bartender to close out my tab. If I were the stereotype that you see on Fox News (and if my card was not on file), we probably could have walked out of this bar unnoticed (without paying). When I calmly and quietly expressed my concern to the bartender (please note that I led with the fact that she makes delicious drinks), she told me that staff were busy tending to both lounge and restaurant patrons. However, we observed staff chatting casually amongst each other and moving with absolutely no sense of urgency. After delivering an uninspired apology (basically telling me to hurry up and close out the tab), she stated that she probably should have checked in on us herself. At this point she was better of telling me the real reason why we did not receive any customer service. I loved the cozy environment and the delicious drinks. However, that means nothing when you're a willing and able paying customer who is not acknowledged. My wife and I had a great time at the Koloa Rum Tasting Room. However, the lack of customer service at this establishment was an alarming reminder that we are indeed on a plantation. I understand that the pandemic is impacting everyone to some extent (especially the work ethic of staff); however, management needs to address this issue (there are multiple Yelp reviews expressing similar experiences. read more

A very solid cocktail bar! We stumbled upon the Mahiko Lounge while waiting around for our Koloa Rum tour to begin (located on the same plantation). The service was leisurely but very welcoming, and we had a great time chatting with our friendly bartender. I started with a Cucumber Lavender Mojito (so refreshing and not too sweet) and then ended up switching to the Coconut Cooler (a little bit sweeter but also fantastic). I also tried a sip of my friend's Pau Hana Mule (passionfruit Moscow Mule), and that was delicious as well. Overall, I really don't think you can go wrong ordering off their specialty cocktail menu, and they're only $8-10 during happy hour (3pm-5pm every day) - which we ended up coming back for after our tour. The place is a beautiful plantation house. We went to the bar after the rum tour and if you buy something at the Koloa Rum store you get a $2. Off a Mai tai. The bartender was not overly friendly but found out she was from Bozeman, MT and she didn't care to say anything positive and how the show Yellowstone show ruined that area. Again just not friendly. The biggest turn off was I had half a drink left and stood up to take a picture of the rain (my bag still on the bar) and she threw out my drink! I was gone 30 seconds! My friend and I had just spent time with our families on the Kauai Plantation Railway and we decided to head over to the lounge for an adult beverage. We both had Mai Tais and they were really very good. Our bartender was great and took good care of us. The lounge was cool because it feels like you stepped back in time. Once our families caught up to us we moved to the outside patio which has a little more of a modern feel which opened up to an open grassy area where the kids ran around and played. The Mai Tais were so good that we came back two days later for round 2. If you want a great Mai Tai and a nice spot to chill and relax, this is your spot. read more

My god. The best short rib sliders ever. Everyone needs to try them. Unfortunately they are only available during happy hour so make it a point to come on time. We actually skipped our FREE rum tasting to have the sliders. They are only $5 for 2. Other than that, drinks here are average. The happy hour is until 5PM and only has $2 off drinks, with a few other appetizers at $5 also. We had to ahi poke, which is a good mix of avocado and chips with tuna. The lounge itself is very charming. Perfect to catch up with friends, there are a mix of tables and couches, and regular tables and chairs, so there's something for everyone. You'd want to come between 3-5 for happy hour where the drinks are slightly discounted and they have their hh menu. We had to three drinks total - the Mai Tai, the Coconut Cooler and the Caliente Margarita. Watched the bartender make them and she was generous with the rum and tequila (not measured). Strong and tasty. We had the pork rinds (freshly made - portion size could be larger) and the kalua pork quesadilla (should have guacamole but they provide sour cream instead). After my husband and I spent some time shopping at one of the jewelry shops, rum tasting and meeting nice people, we headed to the bar to have a mai tai (as recommended by some of the nice people that work there). ‍That's when it all went down hill. The girl at the bar today, during the lunch shift, seemed inconvenienced by us. She was very rude. I'm not sure why because she was not at all busy. In fact, we were her only customers at the time, and all we did is order 2 mai tai's. We asked if we could sit outside and she said, "you could sit out there, but I won't serve you." The tone was so rude too! Then she proceeded to tell us to move from where we were standing because we were on the service area. All we did is stand in front of where she was (and again, the place was empty) more importantly, why such a rude tone?‍ Then when it was time to sign, I couldn't figure out her pen (partly because I just wanted to get away from her) so I asked her how to do it and she rudely and sarcastically said, "just click"...Believe me when I say that this was not a basic pen. We stopped here on our way back from a tour we were un-able to take because our car wouldn't make it on the dirt road. Bummer. We had driven by this area a few times the week we have been here and finally stopped. This was the last part of our visit to the property. We got in right around happy hour - YAY US - ordered drinks and chips and salsa. The environment was so chill so decided to stay for a while. Ordered more drinks and the short rib sliders, edamame, and the hummus all off the happy hour menu. It was all DELICIOUS. I 100% recommend the sliders... I could eat these every day. The manager, Kalena, was getting off work and we all ended up chatting. She was amazing. Gave us wonderful information about the island and some awesome places (including photos) of where we should visit... we will be going tomorrow. Darvey was our bartender and she was great as well... also gave us some places to try that we will be going to on Sunday! Her service was great, she was super friendly and everything was awesome. We are hoping we will have time to come back again before we leave on Monday. I read some reviews about the drinks coming out slow, but I don't think people realize the juices are fresh... the sugar for drinks is literally pressed from the cane RIGHT THERE, and the mint... and everything in their drinks is FRESH!!! However, if you are sitting down at a table you'll be doing a whole lot of relaxing and waiting to get a drink. If you want the BEST mai tai in Kauai, you have to go to the Mahiko Lounge at the Kilohana Plantation! They have a classic mai tai, which is great on its own merits, BUT, for $2 more, get the upgraded mai tai with Koloa Rum. That, my friends, is the best mai tai on Kauai, if not ever. Besides the mai tais, Mahiko Lounge is a classy place. Dark wood and plush comfy seating. A great happy hour, too, with their 5-for-$5 food options! Our server was really nice and efficient and made our experience that much classier. We are most definitely going to hit up Mahiko Lounge the next time we're in Kauai...Hubby loves those Koloa Rum mai tais, and cannot WAIT to drink one upon our return :) read more

We were here for happy hour the bartender enticed us to try a Kingston Club cocktail and it was delicious . I also asked the bartender what on the menu I might be able to eat (and he told me the Ahi Poke and Sweet and Spicy nuts. So I ordered them. Once I got the items I doubted that the Poke chips were GF,Celiacs, it turned out that there was miscommunication and the server was quick to replace it with the GF version. The Poke was taste and the nuts were nice. The servers here were apologetic and kind. I just wish my body would kindly except their apologies. It is a real pain (pun intended) to have food issues. I also tried a Kilohana Kooler, which was not nearly as good as the Kingston Club. I would try this place again, I would just be more clear with both servers. read more

What a great night at Mahiko! Stopped here on a whim on our way from Lihue to Kapaa. Shelby and Cisco were fantastic! Very personable and fun. The Mai Tai and Plantation Tea we're both excellent. Best Mai Tai I've had on Kauai yet. We order the Kalua pork quesadilla and loved it so much that we asked if they could make us pork sliders, even though they weren't on the menu. We stopped here for drinks before our 5pm Koloa rum tasting. We were able to get four seats at the bar. We ordered mai tais all around. They were good, but pricier than a mai tai normally is. The happy hour price is just two bucks off their cocktails bringing the price down to 10 bucks each. We thought the bartender was kind of slow. This lounge is next to Gaylords. This was our last stop in Kauai before we went to the airport since it was convenient. We went to the luau on the same grounds a couple days before we made it to the lounge on our last day. The lounge itself looks like you are in someones home. Not modern, but the seats are comfortable and the ambiance is pretty nice. The staff, amazing! Super friendly, very patient, willing to answer any questions. The drinks, so good, and go for the happy hour and the prices are great. We had Mai Tai's and they were a lot stronger than the ones a couple nights before at the luau. Very nice :) The food, typical bar food. Had pulled pork quesadilla, nothing special, could of made something similar at home, but for $5 during happy hour it was decent. I asked for bread which was not on their menu and they were nice enough to go get me some, and their butter is amazing, has salt ontop :) Overall, good place to stop if you want to kill some time before dinner at Gaylords, going to the airport, or going to the luau on site. Where to start. First of all, go during happy hour. They have great food and drink specials including a $5 poke bowl that's to die for. Second of all, go on a Wednesday when Cory is playing. He's a great entertainer and an overall great guy. I disagree with this place serving the best mai tai. I thought it was the worst. The bartender used two types of rum and mai tai "mixer." He didn't add any fresh juice. I mean we are in Hawaii! Everyplace else uses at least some pineapple juice. Also, the bartender was very out of it. He took forever to come over to us in the beginning and to get us the bill at the end. We stopped in at Mahiko Lounge for our last tropical drink before departing Kauai at the end of our vacation. The location is a little strange, off the highway in an old plantation that's been turned into a sort of shopping village. It's worth making the effort to fine though. The lounge has an old ambiance to it, with small floor level balconies opening up onto the beautiful grounds. It definitely fes like an old plantation home. All we had were drinks. We did a sampling of Mai Tai's on the island and the ones here were among the best. They were crisp and fresh, didn't taste syrupy at all. Service was excellent. This is one place we went on a recommendation that I wish we never went to. We didn't do any of the tour/trains etc and strictly went for the happy hour. We walked in to a quiet bar area where the vibe was old and outdated and the staff seemed annoyed by our presence. We were told to seat ourselves. The waiter came over and put the happy hour menu on our table, we all thanked him, he never replied. We ordered from the $5HH menu on select items, $7 poke and $10 mai tais. Everything was a big bummer. Especially since this restaurant is right next to the Koloa rum company...you'd think they'd be A+...ours came watered down with over ripe pineapple wedges. The poke was mediocre with over cooked taro chips (dark/deep purple with that over fried oil taste), the chicken tender sliders tasted like peanut butter (most likely cooked with peanut oil) and they were over cooked. Edamame was served undercooked. We were really looking forward to this place after our day adventure, and sadly, this is one of our most disappointing stops for food. The bar tender is named Fletcher, he is a really great guy who makes the best Mai Tai that we have had on this island and Maui. Their mai tai was a standout. In addition, they make a rather interesting mojito with lavender simple syrup..it has a rather interesting taste with the added lavender In addition to this, their happy hour menu is pretty good. I tried the beef satay and it was great. The meat was tender. For $5 you essentially received about 3-4 ounces of meat and a great peanut sauce. This bar serves not just the best mai tai on the island but the best mai tai in Hawaii! (When poured by Fletcher Parker). Next best (strangely enough) is the original recipe mai tai at the Cheesecake Factory in Waikiki (when poured by Sheri Goldberg). Fletcher harvests fresh fruit and sugarcane from the property before going on shift and uses a manual press to squeeze out fresh sugarcane juice. Talk about fresh ingredients! The vibe of the bar is old world, Hawaiian-style, turn-of-the-century. It's like stepping back into some of the high-end places that were around when I was growing up there as a kid. If you're looking for a loud, bright, frenetic sports bar with tons of TV screens, this isn't the place. If you're looking for that cool, relaxed, we-can-chat-and-hear-each-other, this-is-old-Hawaii-back-when-Hawaii-5-0-was-first-filmed kinda lounge, this is it!
