Mahin is a master stylist who not only listens to you but will also not do something that 1) doesn't work with your hair type 2) doesn't work with your face shape or 3) doesn't work with your lifestyle. A busy mother of a toddler and preschooler, I really need a cut that looks great when I don't do much, is easy to put up and also looks fabulous when I have time for a 10 minute blow dry and do myself up. Mahin nails it. Every. Single. Time. And my cut always grows out beautifully so I don't have to worry about running back to the salon in 8-10 weeks. Mahin is also an expert with color and only uses top notch products in her salon. If you've had any bad experiences with other stylists and need something corrected, this is your gal! One star off because she keeps limited hours and is very expensive. But overall, it's worth it to have gorgeous hair and the peace of mind knowing you will always walk out happy and looking fabulous instead of with a pit in your stomach wondering when your bad cut will grow out or color will finally be fixed (we've all been there). She is the most knowledgeable person about fragrances that I have ever met. She talks to me like a person, always works with my budget and remembers my name and purchase history, even when I haven't been there in over a year. Mahin will really look at you and your hair. Your cut will hold up when you take it home. It will fit with who you are and who you want to be. She will take care of you and set you up to come back for trims and/or touch-ups so your style and polish don't slip. You can book several appointments in advance. You could book them for the whole year. This is a Real Salon. Moreover, Mahin knows more than how to cut and colour. When I first went to her, I'd just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. My hair showed it. It wasn't just flat, it was falling out. Hair may seem like a silly thing to worry about in the face of illness, but if you know about programs like Pantene's Beautiful Lengths or Locks of Love for cancer patients... losing hair is like the last straw. So, first off I am going to say that I was 100% please and amazed with Kate! She was so sweet and friendly and most of all she knows what she is doing...HANDS DOWN!!! I just moved to Sunnyvale from NYC and have always had someone I know cutting my hair. My Mother was a stylist for years as a child, my ex was a stylist and most of my friends as well, so I have never had a stranger cut my hair! I had always loved going in to Mahin co. even before I started getting my hair done there. I had a bad experience with another salon and my hair was bleached and cracking off. Mahin, Kate and Nam Nam were great at helping me become patient. I was not a person of patience, but their gentle approach at healing my hair paid off. A year later people constantly compliment me on my hair and my eyebrows. My hair has never been this healthy. This is really a special place to me because everyone has the best of intentions and is extremely passionate about what they do. I've learned a lot of little beauty tricks here and there from them. If you love perfume, or don't know what scent would suit you, go and speak with Nam Nam. You will have her complete attention and you won't walk out with a bunch of products you don't like. I tried this salon for the first time. I saw Kate. We discussed my hair. She said she was going to cut it to a length just above the shoulder. I put my head down and started reading and I was shocked to see four inches drop into my magazine. I said, wow, that's a lot shorter than just above the shoulder. That length is really more chin-level, but I guess there's nothing we can do about it now. She promised I would love my cut. In the end, I didn't. It was a good idea but not well executed. During my cut, the owner, Mahin, was giving Kate some instruction about cutting my hair. I showed Mahin that the one side was not even. She proceeded to lecture me about how she has been cutting hair for 25 years and it's her role to educate people about hair. She said hair is really about balance. (Well, my point was that my haircut was not balanced! It was crooked.) Kate was nice. The hair cut was not the greatest, but it was also pretty inexpensive. Mahin will give you the most beautiful, very stylish, hip, and flattering cut you could dream of. I've been going here since I was about 14 or so (I'm lucky, this isn't really a place a mom would normally take her kids). My mom, my grandma and I all go here and we all adore it. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxing from the soft, creamy walls to the high ceiling painted a cool, dreamy blue. You'll be started off with a relaxing wash and maybe a deep conditioning treatment, depending on the state of your hair. Then it's off to the artist. I call her an artist because what she can do to your hair isn't anything less than art. My hair is fine and bone straight and can't be coaxed to do anything interesting unless Mahin cuts it. If she can make my fine hair look this good, I can only imagine what she can do to thick, bouncy hair! I've only gotten cuts, never coloring, but I've seen the coloring she does on other people and it's great. Mahin uses the best products out there (Bumble and Bumble, Phyto, and more) and sells them there as well. You can also find great makeup, candles, jewelry, and perfume, all lovely and all very high quality. Both Mahin and Nam Nam are very knowledgeable and inviting and all other apprentices and staff are well trained and friendly. I'll warn you, Mahin's is pricey, but you get what you pay for. Try it out, you will not regret it. Here's a fun story: My grandma was out and about somewhere (not exactly sure where) and she saw a lady with an awesome hair cut. I am always reminded when I get old-world service and quality how rare it is in today's rushed world...and that's exactly what I received when I went to Mahin & Co and got a much-needed hair cut. I actually got more than a cut...I got care and lots of it. I rush around all the time and rarely take the time to futz with myself, so it was delightful to not get just get a cut, but a relaxing experience. Maciel did such a good job of listening to what I wanted to do with my hair and never once did she utter a word about how terrible I have been to my hair....really awful! So, to get the wonderful shampoo and relaxing hair massage and TLC was like going back in time to a real salon experience, like I used to get when I lived in Manhattan. NamNam is charming, personable and treats each customer experience like it's the most important. And the founder, Mahin (who was away visting her new grandson...congratulations!) is a genius with color and cut. This review is specifically for Srutih Colbert. This woman has mastered hair. I think she has been cutting hair for 20some years and has an incredible understanding of hairstyling. When I went in for my cut I had a pretty messy head of hair, damaged and dry and crazy weird layers from a cheap cut I had gotten a couple months earlier. I had a general idea of what I wanted done, but Srutih just knew exactly what to do, in regards to my facial structure, hair type and lifestyle. The next morning, I was a little reluctant to wash out the amazing curls she blow dried in, and knowing that I would never be able to replicate what she did in the salon. However I was (not too) surprised how just simply great the cut IS without any professional styling. After washing and air drying, my cut was definitely different then what it looked like in the salon, but I remarked to my boyfriend, "this is the best haircut I've ever had." Terrific experience getting balayage with Maciel at Mahin & Co. this evening. Maciel was kind, careful, and the wash was one of the best massages I've ever had! NamNam and Mahin generously tested a sample of my hair earlier in the week and even had me stop by to make sure the color was what I wanted. Returns on unused products is a NO RETURN POLICY. Why would I want to return something I have bought and never tried? So, the store has a NO return policy. Again, I can go anywhere else and try a product and return it if it is not what I want. Namnam says they have specialist that allow you try the products. That is not the same as trying it at home. The atmosphere of the store is not conducive to hanging around and trying products out. Namnam watches and controls everything. It is not a friendly atmosphere but a stuffy one. I went because of rave reviews on the Mothers' Clubs I belong to. And because as much as I have liked the places I've gone to that were in a less affluent price range, I haven't been in love with the cuts. Srutih got major kudos so I made my appointment to see her on Friday. Making the appointment was tough because my son is in school from 830am to noon and Mahin and Company doesn't open until 11am. But for me, the office manager said that Srutih could come in early. I was grateful. She even said my rambunctious nearly four year old could come in because he was so sweet. He was shy. He would have driven them nuts. I wandered in just before 10am and it was the office manager and I chatting (forgive me for forgetting your name! I forget my own half the time) when Srutih came in. She took one look at my hair and asked me what I wanted to do. I told her I wanted to maintain the length but could she make a decision for me about the bangs. Do I have that wispy fringe thing with too long side fringe or do we do something else? She gave me more of a fringe which I adored. The look is kind of Marlo Thomas "That Girl" 1966 but modernized. I adore it. With most hair cuts, I like it for the first day. Then I wash it and find that it's impossible to work with. This one was easy to deal with and I still find it a bit sassy (especially since I went a little nuts in the hair colour department and made my hair 'Scilla marries Elvis dark). Mahin and Srutih are not cheap. $115 for the cut. But I don't anticipate it getting super shaggy in six weeks - I can wait eight before I got back to Srutih to make me the swingin' Mommy at the preschool again. read more

At mahins, never is the case! I always leave happy and in love with my hair. In fact, recently, I went to another salon out of convenience and that was a mistake. Mahin is the mistress of hair and Namnam is the perfume queen. Mahin is an artist who has done wonders to my fine and flat hair. I was primarily worried about my flat looking crown, and she did a wonderful job making it look full and bouncy. After I get out, my hair looks great for months- and I have short hair. If you're looking for classic, chic, beautiful haircuts in particular, you must go to Mahin. I highly recommend it. Namnam, on the other hand, is a perfume queen. She has stuff that you would have to normally go to SF (at the very least) to get: Caron, Bond no. 9, Kai, of course, L'artisan. If you're lucky, there may be some Diptyques left (too bad they're discontinuing the line.) Oh, and I do hope they start selling Molinards (ok, now these normally aren't available outside France.) BTW... she's selling a fragrance of her own creation. It's light and green with a floral flourish and a clean finish. I'm inviting everybody to try it out. read more

I visited Mahin today looking for a new men's cologne. NamNam was very kind with her knowledge and time. My experience was excellent. She has a women's nose on what smells great on a guy. I find this sensitivity very much missing when working with the department stores. I am new to wearing colognes. I told her that I wanted something I could wear with my work clothes (suit-tie-slacks) and one that women would find sexy. She suggested CoSTUME NATIONAL HOMME. It smelled amazing and very unique on my skin. I purchased the 100ml bottle. She suggest only 1 spray. I applied it around 4pm today. It is know 8:35PM. I am really appreciating the beauty of this cologne since application. One spray is just right for me as it is holding it dry down notes with power. If you are tired of the mainstream fragrances and need direction to not smell like the next guy. You should drop by Mahin and have a conversation with NamNam. You will learn a bit more about fragrances while having a great scent conversation. Hopefully you will find a connection to a cologne that gives you that unique experience every time you put it on. This review is specifically for Srutih Asher Colbert. She is a fantastic hair dresser and has been cutting my hair for the past 20 years! Srutih has vast experience and has trained, worked (and trained/taught others) in what are considered to be among the Hair Industry's top salons, working alongside the 'creme de la creme.' I first discovered Srutih when she was working at Yosh in San Francisco. I then followed her to the Joseph Cozza Salon in the Gumps building. From there Srutih moved to Palo Alto and began working at di Pietro Tod. Srutih finally decided to work for herself and now has her own chair at a great salon called Mahin & Co in Palo Alto. Even though it is much less convenient, I continue to make the long drive from Berkeley just to get my hair cut by Srutih. She is by far the best hair cutter in the area and my friends who visit from out of town beg me to book an appointment with her when they come to visit. She is profesional, precise and has a great sense of style in terms of what works best for different people's type of hair and face shape. Indeed, Srutih has transformed many a friend who was in dire need of a better haircut! I wholeheartedly recommend Srutih and I have to say I really like the feel of the Salon overall. Their selection of fragrance products (home and personal) is exceptional - they have really hard to find, high quality perfumes like L'Artisan Perfumeur. The woman working at the store when I was there (who is the buyer for scents for the store) was INCREDIBLY knowledgeable - when I mentioned some of the other scents I own and like, she knew not just what products I might like, but details like which perfume creator developed various scents. In addition they asked me to pay more than the normal amount while I was sitting in the chair, even though I did not want anything different than the first time. Honestly a little disappointed.
