What a beautiful library! I came here to study with my cousin and upon entry was ecstatic to see an tribute table and display on the front counter, to black history month. I utilized their study room, available for 2 hours on busy days, longer is accepted when no one is waiting. The library is two stories, equipped with beautiful views of lake mahopac. I love coming here whenever I am visiting my boyfriend! He grew up coming to this library, so it holds a great deal of nostalgia for him. I absolutely love curling up with a book in front of the huge picture windows that overlook Lake Mahopac on the first and second floors of the spacious, modern building. They have a robust selection of literature, even a lot of books I wasn't sure were even in print anymore. I was so surprised to see that they had a ton of the hard to find Babysitter's Club books I had read and loved as a kid. The ground floor of the library has a community bookstore that sells used books for $10 and less. I was also very impressed with the selection there as well. If you're a book nerd and find yourself in Mahopac, you have to visit this library! read more

I really enjoy the library here! How wonderful this place is! How comfortable & peaceful! The 1st floor has computers that are limited to 15 minutes because they are for printing only! As you sit you can watch the boats go out & dock ! How Relaxing can that be let me tell you, you will lose track of time. If and I say if because they look as they will have every book written, again if they don't have the book your looking for they will request it from another library and have it delivered for you to pick up. They also have museum passes that will give you free admission or a discount of the admission price. If you lose the museum passes you will pay a fine anywhere form $100.00 - $350.00 !! Don't lose those. Also if your late it's $10.00 a day and checking out a museum pass is not like a book you only get 3 days to use it. Their are computers upstairs where you can sit but their is a time limit and that's at any library. As long as no one is waiting you can renew your time. It's the same when you check out a book after the 1 month return date you can call setup an email or go in for an extension. Awesome Library!! read more

I went to the library with my two very young children, both who are disabled and struggle daily with ASD/SPD/OCD/anxiety etc etc. While at the library we were alone in a corner reading and playing with a toy. I noticed an older librarian repeatedly staring at us I finally looked up and asked if there was a problem. She stated that my children should have masks on I explained to her they are disabled and have mask exemptions both in school and out. She then snickered at my reply and asked if I could "TRAIN" my children to wear one. I kindly replied NO and had my children exit the library. Now I know there are people who are mask believers and those who are anti-mask I never share my views. It's to controversial and I don't want my children to hear either side of the argument because they are children. While at the library I had my mask on because I'm an adult and feel I shouldn't make anyone uncomfortable in a public setting. However, my children are children, they do not deserve to be the target of someone's scolding and made to feel uncomfortable at a library. I don't think training children who deal with enough pressures because they are different is the right approach. I've never had this issue anywhere in the community and find it appalling. I also will recommend that if she's reading this review check out a book or two on SPD (The out of Synch child) or a book on compassion because you've lost yours over masks! read more

A total gem! I enjoy reading but am not a fan of e-readers...I like BOOKS. So when I heard the library had a used bookstore and almost all items are $1 or less I had to see it for myself. The space is small for the amount of books they have, so it is a little time consuming to find what you are looking for on your first visit. But the staff is helpful and once you figure out the system it makes more sense. That aside, it is definitely worth a trip. On my first trip, I left with 2 shopping bags filled with books in good condition. came to $7 but they accept donations, so I gave them $10. I'm looking forward to my next visit! read more

This review is focused on Mahopac Library's Book Barn, located in the library's basement. The Book Barn features a wide assortment of donated books (along with media and other random goodies), with proceeds benefiting the library. It's as good as any other used book store - even better in terms of pricing. Most books are 50 cents to $1. Occasionally they have sales during holidays or to move inventory. The books are organized into sections, i.e. travel, classics, children's, mystery, cooking, and much much more. 1 or 2 of the aisles are designed for size 0 people. There's also assorted media, including DVDs, CDs, occasional computer games, and a crapload of VHS movies for those still stuck in the stone age (I josh! Someone bring back the days of VHS rewinders). I've seen many books from my high school summer reading lists, so it's definitely a great place for students, your mom, anyone! You never know what you'll find. The Book Barn is not always open when the library is, so be sure to check out Mahopac Library's site (http://www.mahopaclibrarysite.org/) for hours or call the library. Their current hours are: Tuesdays from 1.00 to 8.00p Wednesdays from 10.00 a to 5.00p Thursdays from 2.00 to 7.00p Fridays from 1.00 to 4.00p Saturdays from 1.00 to 4.00p through June; July & August: 11a to 2p and the 2nd Sunday of every month from 1.00 to 4.00 p (Closed Sundays in July and August.) And even if you do stop by when the Book Barn is closed, there is always a large selection of books for sale in the lobby of the library for $1. ***TIP: If the weather's nice, and you'd rather bike than drive, the bike trail (Putnam/North County Trailway) runs right across the street from the library. Be sure to bring a backpack - you'll need it for all those books you're going to buy! read more
