When I still lived in New Jersey I went here a few times with my family. It was fun to go here because Hibachi is always fun to watch. The place has a good atmosphere and really good food as well as expected when it comes to Hibachi. There is a nice fish tank near the bathrooms and a cool water fountain near the front too. As for service it is overall good as there are no complaints with it. The show is always fun to watch and enjoy before eating. When it comes to complaints just make sure to be careful with how you order when you go out for lunch not dinner. If you're not specific when you order that you want the lunch deal you might get charged for the dinner pricing instead which is obviously more than the lunch pricing. Other than that, no other complaints and check it out whenever you have the chance. read more

There are two distinct sides: a focused sushi area and a high-energy room with about 8 hibachi tables. The energy from the hibachi side is exhilarating, you definitely get a bit of FOMO hearing all the fun happening over there! Everything we've had here is fresh and excellent. Most importantly for me (my GF), this is a Celiac-safe haven. The menu has tons of clearly marked Gluten-Free and Shellfish-Free options, and the staff is incredibly diligent about preparing everything separately to avoid cross-contamination. I had not been to Mahzu in years, but recently found myself here twice in the last month. Once was for hibachi with a group of 20 and the second time was for sushi with my husband. I'm happy to report that both experiences were wonderful with great service and good food. The hibachi chefs are animated and quite fun to watch. The clear soup, noodles and rice accompanying the hibachi is just delicious and everyone in our party of 20 enjoyed their meal. We also came here on a weeknight for sushi and much to our surprise they offer 20% off all classic rolls Tuesday - Thursday. Got the steak hibachi dinner and the salmon hibachi dinner. The steak and salmon were both extremely flavorful and were cooked just right. The hibachi dinners each came with a small bowl of soup, a small bowl of salad, 2 shrimps, fried rice, fried noodles, and fried vegetables. The portions of the teppanyaki food items were very large! I went there hungry and could barely finish half of my plate. The "show" part of the hibachi was rather lackluster. They did the onion volcano and the thing where they have you try to catch some vegetable pieces in your mouth, but the onion volcano was very short/small and we didn't see other standard tricks like the egg tossing. Our chef was very nice and friendly though. Service was good throughout the meal- employees and chefs were very engaging and checked in periodically. The wait at the start was a bit long, especially given the hibachi grill section of the restaurant was essentially empty besides one other party finishing the last of their dinner. It was later explained to us that they were waiting to see if other people would show up (the setup inside is multiple seats along a counter/table that stretches around the grill, so different parties could be seated at the same table/grill). It was very quiet when we went, but made sense given that it was Superbowl Sunday and most people were probably otherwise occupied. Overall, a good place for very yummy hibachi/teppanyaki food. Come for the food, not for the show. Also fyi there's an auto-gratuity of 20% for parties of 2 or more and a $7 sharing fee. read more

The hibachi is a great experience of the culinary expertise and Al a carte menu has a wide range of food choices from all kinds of meats for hibachi to sushi rolls and ramen bowls and much more. Lunch review. All 4 stars are for the quality of the food. The chicken tempura was the juiciest I'd ever had. Fish portions in the rolls were ample. Lunch specials included miso soup & salad. Service was slow, but friendly. Half the space is for hibachi dining, the other half for regular seating. We were seated in the back, which was dark during the day, and cell service was spotty. Went here last night with a party of 10 for hibachi. Saturday night at 6, plenty of open tables. Food and service were right where you expect it to be, but nothing exceptional. The hibachi skills were mediocre. I think we all have an expectation of what activities they need to perform and it felt like the chef was just going through motions instead of adding the charisma and charm we want. It all had to do with our chef he decided he values food too much to do the zucchini in your mouth and also did not provide Sakiey as the other ones did instead he like to sing songs but what made it much worse was he decided to let us know his political view by telling us his portions are smaller because of our now president. Have visited at least 8 times since they opened their doors...always for hibachi as it is my family's favorite. Last night, on a whim, I decided to pick up three dinners on my way home. Two hibachi and a tempura shrimp. Stopped in, placed and waited for my order. It was ready in 10 minutes and came out from the kitchen, fresh and hot. Since I only had a 3 mile ride home, it was as fresh as I could expect it to be. However, I must say that all three meals were extremely bland. The shrimp in the hibachi dinners, both the appetizers and the shrimp hibachi dinner that I ordered were way overcooked and like rubber. The filet mignon, ordered medium rare was medium at best also a bit tough. I would've expected that had I ordered the sirloin, but I ordered the fillet. The shrimp in the shrimp teriyaki dinner were tender, but completely tasteless. Absolutely no flavor was whatsoever. Even with the sauce. And the vegetables, aside from the one broccoli floret, and the one carrot, were unidentifiable. Also completely flavorless. The hibachi dinners did have sauce on the proteins and vegetables and although the garlic in the sauce was apparent, the flavor wasn't there. Everything was just very bland and disappointing. Came in for a late birthday celebration with my twin sister and our significant others. The wait to be seated for Hibachi was only about 5 minutes. We were a group of 4 So we were seated with other people. Mahzu is BYOB so we brought a bottle of wine which they opened for us. Our chef didn't really do any special hibachi type things ( saki , onion tower etc) he did a good job but strictly just cooked the food and went on his way. The table behind us had a different chef who did saki and all the other things. They also don't have yum yum sauce which was very strange. Every other hibachi place I've been has had the sauce but they did have 2 other sauces which were ok. Overall good experience, I think it really will depend on which chef you get since it seems they all don't do the standard. read more

My Hawaii-islander raw food fix needed to be sated, so I chose to try out Mahzu which identifies as a Japanese restaurant. They open at 4:30 so I decided to get in before any dinner rush. Definitely nice and quiet and empty right at 4:30 :) Service was pretty fast and my waiter was kind, polite, and attentive. For an appetizer, I got the Tuna Tataki - a seared tuna served w garlic, scallion, tobiko, and ponzu sauce. It is VERY smoky and has some strong spiciness to it. So if you don't mind your taste buds being in spicy shock for a bit, then go for it. It is quite a bit of fish for only $8.95 so I'd say it's a good price for what you get. For the meal, I decided to try the Nabeyaki Udon - udon noodle soup w chicken, egg, fishcake, vegetables, and 1 shrimp tempura. The shrimp tempura had a fertilizer taste to it which meant it was old... So I was bummed with that. But the Nabeyaki was nice. Noodles were cooked well, broth was VERY light and flavored mainly by the veggies and shiitake mushroom. My fav was their sushi rolls! Holmdel Avocado Roll - spicy tuna, baked eel, avocado. Tasty!! And no fertilizer taste so the eel was not old lol. Mahzu Samurai Roll - spicy crunchy tuna, red and white tuna on top, sweet miso sauce on top! Delish! Tiger Roll - spicy tuna, avocado, white tuna, salmon, crunch, with chef special sauce. Great!! Mahzu had always been a favorite local spot for sushi. And I will still give them kudos for their professionalism and friendly, efficient service. However last night was a disappointment. To begin with, it's time to replace the booths - there's nothing left to the cushions and you're basically sitting on springs and wood. The sushi bar is now just used as a staging area for takeout. As for the food, the quality and presentation overall was poor. The pepper tuna was more like jerky, gyoza was burnt on the outside but served just warm, rolls were dry, and sauce was used very sparingly. Probably won't be going back. read more

We went with our family friends that live in Jackson to try for dinner. There was 10 of us. The only saving Grace was the two waiters and the sushi. It was cold outside and VERY cold in the restaurant. The food was average and there was a bone in my friends chicken that she almost choked on. She did not get all her chicken and they had to get her another piece. Once the food hit ur plate a minute later it was cold you could not eat it. At the end of the meal we were asked if things were good. We let them know about the bone and the manager offered her ice cream for the bone in the chicken in their freezing restaurant. We had our annual Valentines group dinner there this past Saturday and it has to be one of the worst dining experiences. We made reservations for 18 people, 2 tables, 2 chefs. They were very adoment when making the reservation that we all needed to be there on time and with our full group or we would lose our spot, they even went out of thier way to call us that morning to confirm group and restate that we need to ALL be there or lose the spot. We ALL got there at the same time, had to wait well past our reservation time and got seated. So they went thru all this effort to be a pain about the reservation and then they could not hold up to thier end of the deal nor accomadate us for the troubles. One whole half of the table was served apps and the "seafood" portion of the dinner before the other chef even showed up to start cooking for the other half!! REALLY??? We are all there, YOU are not. Our side of table did not get the meat steaks until after the whole dinner was served and we did not get dipping sauces until after the meal. Our side was done dinner while our other friends just started the apps. The biggest issue here is the extreme lack of management, I talked to the lady who was supposed to be the manager and she was unable to fix the problem. She was completely unorganized and lack professionalism to deal with customers. It was complegte circus at the host area, bunch of ladies not knowing what to do or how to accomadate the customers and manage the chefs. We also had one party leave before dinner because he was so aggravated. The manager said we would get free sushi apps to make up for it, guess what, she only gave it to half the table. Worst group dining experience ever, NEVER going here again!! DO NOT LISTEN to them when they ask your whole group to be there!
