This place was very good when they first opened. Servers were polite and old came out quickly. The quality specifically the plating is something I loved about the place. But as time progressed it went a little downhill and now other sushi places have opened up nearby with better prices for the same sushi. If they brought there prices down to compare to other places I would definitely come here more often. read more

It really pains me to give Yama Sushi only 3 stars. The decor and service are both truly 5 stars. This place used to be an Italian restaurant and it has been completely redecorated and transformed into a cool, stylish Japanese oasis. Every aspect of the space was paid attention to. The walls are adorned in glitter, they hung up japanese parasols in the back room and large fun lanterns/dice(?) in the front, their are accents of red, black and glitter all throughout (see photos) -- Based on looks alone, this place is a winner. Unfortunately, my friend and I were just very underwhelmed by the food. We came in around lunchtime and were seated immediately. Our server was readily available at all times and had a pleasant demeanor. I tried a chicken teriyaki lunch special and my friend had two basic sushi rolls. We were so disappointed. Everything was lacking in flavor - especially the fish & sushi rice (...so basically the entire roll lol) Perhaps its the type of rice vinegar they use (or don't use) but the rice was extremely bland, as was the fish inside. Sushi should never be tasteless - it should be fresh and have good flavor to it. The chicken teriyaki was good, not great. Although I love how the restaurant looks, it seems that Yama should pay less attention to their eye-grabbing decor and perhaps spend a bit more on higher quality food. read more

Friday night January 14 -we called at 5:50pm and place our order for $75. (Btw they did not mention a $2.5-0 delivery charge) and we tipped $10. - I ask how long and they say 30-45 minutes. 7:20pm our food arrives. The hot appetizers are cold, and two items are missing. This is one the best sushi spots in the Freehold/Manalapan area in my opinion. Their dining room just reopened and we enjoyed a great dinner there last night. We always go for the Amazing Roll (which has the best, fresh mango) and the Kiss of Summer Roll (which is loaded with fresh jalapeño)... highly recommend both! read more

Tried this place after a friend found a groupon for it! It was definitely a great find! The food is absolutely delicious! Some of the best sushi I had in a long time. Some of my favorite rolls were OMG roll, and firecracker roll! We also ordered the Yama chips appetizer and it was delicious! It had different raw fishes and it was served on a Pringle. MY FAVORITE SUSHI SPOT! The udon is so so so delicious and perfect. My brother and I once bought three larges on a random Wednesday because we love it so much! Bought Groupon 6:30pm today, went to take my Dad out for his birthday 30 minutes later... we show up and they're only doing takeout and delivery, both of which do NOT accept the Groupon, as it is for "dine-in" only. I proceed to tell management that I just bought the Groupon, I understand it's for dine in only, but if you are not offering dine-in... then you really shouldn't be luring in business thru a Groupon that is useless. Gave them the opportunity to honor the Groupon based on principle... Nope! Wouldn't take it! So for $15, you'd rather lose a customer and have a shitty review?? That is BS and they should have accepted the Groupon. Returning the Groupon and they can go screw! Many other good sushi places in town!! Just moved to the area and was fairly underwhelmed with sushi options. I'm more into nigiri than fancy rolls, and that requires the fish to be extra fresh and the rice to be seasoned right, since there's no sauces to hide behind. This place won't change your life, and it's certainly nowhere near omakase standards of nyc. But from a takeout perspective it did not disappoint and they didn't nickel and dime when I wanted to change out the roll that comes with the sushi deluxe. May become my go to spot after trying a few more places for comparison. Def give them a try! read more

My wife and I visited Yama on a weekday for lunch. In general the decor is modern with some Japanese flair as opposed to traditional you see in other Japanese restaurants. The dinner menu is very standard as in other Japanese restaurants. Appetizer - raw and cooked, sushi dinner, standard rolls and specialty rolls. Cooked dinner entrees. For the most part reasonably priced. There was a lunch menu and specials for lunch. We ordered some rolls and an appetizer. The appetizer was the Kani salad which was good. The rolls were ok. Fish was fresh, but my major pet peeve is the consistency of the rice which was on the stiffer side. The flavors are overall good. Portions were average. The staff was very friendly albeit on the slower side. I would come here again if i met up with friends, but would rather go to Wasabi house in Matawan or Konbu in Manalapan if i need a sushi fix. read more

First off, I eat sushi A LOT. I've been to dozens of places in different states, east and west coast. That being said, I've been to Yama three times already, once for dinner and twice for lunch, each time the food was great. The crunchy kani/seaweed salad mix is amazing! Service is good, prices are average. The lunch special is great... I believe it's a special roll, a regular roll and soup for $13.95. At some places, one special roll alone can cost that much. Please ignore the folks whining about the AYCE situation... get over it. Seems like a few of the negative reviews were complaining about the changing of an "All you can eat" policy... my hidden sushi snob may be showing a bit, but hardly any reputable, quality sushi place is going to offer AYCE indefinitely... that's not how sushi is supposed to be enjoyed. If you want to shovel hours-old California rolls into your face with no consideration for the subtleties of enjoying sushi, go down the street to Tokyo - they have a large sushi buffet. Yama is the definition of serviceable. What separates them from their competitors is their handling of the sushi rice. Too often, the sushi restaurants nearby under-season their rice and go too light on the wasabi. Sushi is all about balance and harmony and sticking slices of fish, no matter how fresh, on nearly plain white rice is just wrong. Yama gets the rice part right, not perfect mind you, but closer to what it should be than it's competitors. The fish is fresh though the nigiri slices could be a bit more generous. Standouts include the yellowtail jalapeño appetizer, thin slices of yellowtail dressed in a sweet ponzu with slices of jalapeño over a salad. The negimaki is nice as well. Thin slices of steak are stuffed with scallion and rolled in a sweet teriyaki sauce. The deluxe sushi assortment is a good value as is the sushi/sashimi combination. Nothing too special worth going out of your way for at this suburban sushi spot. Went on a double date last night with another couple and we all ordered our own dishes (mainly sushi but the gf got a Hibachi Chicken main). Overall the sushi is fresh and pretty decent but the prices are a bit high for stuff that isn't out of this world amazing. Would be a bit more fair priced if they knocked a buck or two off of the rolls to give it a bit more money for value. The combination sushi platter I had was $15 for 3 rolls that were on the smallish side. The others at the table enjoyed their sushi as well but the special rolls seemed to mainly be a mix and match of sauces and fish with large Maki pieces to compensate for the OK quality of the food. Outside of the sushi, the chicken hibachi main was pretty dreadful with sauce that was cloyingly sweet and overcooked chunks chicken. For the $14 or so dollars that it cost for this dish, you are much better off going to a real teppanyaki place for a show with a lot more food for only maybe a buck or two more. The place is BYOB so that allows you to save a few bucks on alcohol which is always a plus and the service is attentive without being too annoying. At the end of the day there is nothing really wrong with this place, but the endless supply of suburban sushi within a 20 minute drive radius that give you better value for money or an all you can eat option for a few more bucks then the prices at this restaurant really has me wanting to take my patronage elsewhere the next time I need my sushi fix. read more

I've ordered from Yama couple of times the first time I ordered from there it was not good at all I decided to give it one more try and it was pretty decent decent enough for a fast delivery sushi place with acceptable priced rolls. Tonight is definitely the last time I will order from Yama I ordered a Kani salad which is extremely Bland and very very soupy the quantity is enough for your typical Kani salad it's just the soupy consistency of the sauce is horrid and tasteless. I also ordered the Philadelphia roll a salmon avocado roll and a Boston roll to start off the rolls have a massive amount of rice on them so much that I will get full off of one roll this Philadelphia rolls look pretty decent except for the rice but the salmon rolls look like nothing I've ever seen it almost scares me to eat it in hopes I will not get food poisoning tomorrow morning the Boston roll avocados are brownish and the sushi paper is falling apart as soon as I pick it up I'm really not happy with this experience ganga will forever be the only place I get sushi ever again. read more

Delicious! From the ambiance to the service to the food Yama is hands down 5 stars. Located in the galleria strip mall in Manalapan, when you entire the restaurant you feel like you have traveled to Asia with the cherry Blossom theme decor. Although a little on the procier side for sushi and Asian fusion the food is delicious and worth the price. If I ever want a nice night out with friends or family for sushi this is the place to go to. Even on Friday nights when it's more crowded you can always find a seat and are not rushed. The sushi is very fresh and placed on the plate beautifully. The portions for hibachi are excellent- just wish they added rice to the option for the hibachi lunch and dinner. There are plenty of options for your pickiest eaters even those who don't enjoy sushi like my husband can always find something in yama.
