There are 6 reserved parking stalls on the back of the service station parking lot. Chef Sam Yu is a wizard of Vietnamese cuisine. We love his artfully redefined interpretations of traditional Vietnamese entrees. His Curry Crab is famous. We had the Banh Cuon, homemade Look Fun rolled up with ground pork, mushrooms, long rice, chop sui yam, and topped off with some of their famous Fish Sauce. Simply amazing. We also ordered the Banh Xeo which is a Vietnamese Crepe with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, served with lettuce, mint, and fish sauce. Chef Sam makes the best Banh Xeo on Oahu. Wonderful dish. I'm guessing this place doesn't have the highest ratings because the service is like many other typical Asian restaurants where it may not be the best because they know their food will make up for it. It seemed like a lot of the items on the menu were supposed to be shared family style even though we all ordered our own meals lol. Our waters were still refilled and they even packaged up our food themselves for leftovers. That's pretty dang good service even if they don't have the typical service with a smile. It was a cream on the side but the coffee was filled to the top there was no room to pour creamer. So I had to drink the bitter coffee to make room for creamer. With the creamer, coffee taste better. My friend ordered a beer. We ordered the Vietnamese dumpling as our appetizer. First time having it. Love the sweet fish dipping. Perfectly balanced. We also order sour catfish soup and curry shrimp. I don't usually write reviews, but this place truly deserves one. The Fresh Shrimp Vermicelli Soup was hands down the best shrimp soup I've ever had. While the signature Curry Crab was also absolutely delicious, the shrimp vermicelli soup was my personal favorite. The broth was incredibly rich, fresh, and full of flavor. Even my husband and my son--who normally doesn't like seafood--ended up eating a lot of it. The fried rice was also fantastic, with that authentic smoky wok hei flavor. Whether you're ordering Chinese or Vietnamese dishes, everything tastes incredibly authentic. Now I understand why so many celebrities have dined here. I've driven past this restaurant almost every day for over a decade and only in 2024 did I decide to try it. Located next to a gas station, it's a very unassuming restaurant offering standard Vietnamese fare. The inside is dated, but I think they like that. There's a full bar which helps with the ample seating of several long tables capable of holding parties as large as sixteen and a handful of more intimate tables of four people. Parking is a crapshoot as it shares a lot with the gas station next door with a few stalls against the wall. There is some street parking depending on the time of the day. My better half and I got shrimp spring rolls, Banh Mi Bo Kho (beef stew with French bread), and meatball pho. The spring rolls had fresh vegetables, chewing wrapping and okay sized shrimp. The dipping sauce was excellent. The pho was decent in flavor and came with many meatballs. The Vietnamese beef stew had a lot of brisket but was spicier than I expected. The French bread was nothing to write home about and I wish you could substitute noodles instead. The staff are polite but do take their time. Finally got to a chance to cross this long time Vietnamese restaurant on Keeaumoku across the street from Itchy Butt off my bucket list! So glad I got to enjoy my first time with a group of fellow foodie friends which always makes dining more fun! The broth was light but tasted like it had been cooked with lots of herbs. It complimented the sweet plump shrimp perfectly! Just wish there was more of it! TBT I think this was my favorite dish. Finally, an opportunity to dine at Mai Lan arrived! Our friend, Jolene, was coming back home... Plus, Paul's sister and brother-in-law were celebrating their wedding anniversary! Yay! Double happiness! We arrived extra early to secure one of the free parking stalls around the building's corner next to the gasoline station. Our party of nine were seated in the back room. The worker with limited English was arranging our table and a table for a party next to us. I thought: Ooh - the empty room will be crowded (and loud) soon! The worker kindly let us sit wherever we wanted and brought us glasses of iced water. Paul's brother-in-law knows the owner, Uncle Sam, and had purchased ribeye steaks to be cooked at the restaurant. He also ordered for us some secret menu items that are only available for "special customers". Here's what we ate: 1. Bun Xeo - Vietnamese omelette - I've always wanted to try this dish! We cut up the omelette, put some in our lettuce wrap, and dipped/poured sweet chili sauce on each bite - delicious! 2. The famous Curry Crab! Uncle Sam brought the live crabs to our table and let them walk around before their demise! Served with baguettes (or rice), this was (in my opinion) the best entree of the evening! We came for the crab curry and I will be back for the crab curry. It was so good. It was expensive when we came however, it goes by market rate so it may not always be so expensive. The portion is huge so definitely don't feel like you need to order a bunch of other dishes! The crab curry was so satisfying I want to come back next time and just order that and maybe the friend rice or something. Everything we ordered was delicious, however. It was a popular spot when we were there but luckily, we got a table easily. Best curry crab on the island IMHO! Been here 2x and it never disappointed! Tasty, juicy, freshly cooked Dungeness crab in their special curry sauce. Comes with baguette and you dip it in the sauce, put a bit of crab meat on it...yum! Something you gotta try at least once! Also had the jumbo (Kahuku ) prawns with special sauce and long rice noodles... thumbs up! Highly recommended and 1/2 order is available. Even the ong choy was really good. They make it not only with garlic sauce that you find at Chinese places, but with the special fish sauce and pepper ! Parking (about 1/2 dozen or so stalls) are along the ocean side of the building facing the gas station. Trick is to go early, 530 ish before the dinner crowd and probably there will be space.
