Pho is really great, BUT, Unfortunately very cold impersonal and very immature staffing. I normally go places I feel comfortable with a warm welcoming friendly vibe. Definitely not a warm and welcoming ohana feeling here. The young girl was very snotty and had a lot of attitude. Inexperienced unprofessional. I went regularly and sat by myself with my frenchie and they didn't like service animals and were reluctant to even let me dine from the start, so eventually they stopped serving me all together. Told me I wasn't no longer allowed to dine in at small table in the back. I could really feel the unwelcome cold vibe from the start. I realized they are very busy and need to get food out fast. OK well , I was hopeful to watch a nice movie but they were to busy to accommodate. I was treated like an unwelcome nuisance over all from the beginning . This is probably the best asian food you're going to get Hawaii Kai side. Not the traditional Vietnamese flavors or style but it'll get the job done. I ordered the bun Bo hue and they use pho noodles and pho brisket and tofu instead of the typical noodles, meat, and toppings for bun Bo hue. The veggies served are those typical of pho instead of bun Bo. It tastes fine but just not traditional. More a of a light sweet lemongrass flavor than the bold spicy beefy shrimpy taste I was looking for. Maybe next time will get pho and see how that is? read more

I'm so glad I decided to come try this restaurant. This particular location was always changing so it's nice to see that they've been there for some time. The space is spacious, they have lots of tables and it's an exercise for the workers. We came for an early dinner and got seated quick. I love my pho so I had to try it. Their dishes are a bit pricey but delicious. We ordered the papaya salad, a combo pho and pho with beef ball and rare steak. The broth is delicious. What I found interesting were the sauces. I'm used to seeing sriracha and hoisin sauce stationed at each table, but they were all stationed at the middle where they keep their to-go supplies. When you're seated, they bring along the bottles to leave at the table. They also didn't have any kind of chili sauce at arms reach so upon request, the server brought out a small dish of satay, more chili pepper than sauce. (I'm not sure if they make it in-house). I rarely eat Vietnamese food, but I decided to try this eatery since it's located near my place. They're located in the City Mill shopping center next to Koa Pancake House and near Ross. Plenty of free parking is available in the lot. I called in my order and it was ready by the time I got there in 10 min. Upon arrival, I was surprised how nice, modern and big it was inside. I thought it was more of a fast food establishment but it's actually a nice sit down restaurant. I ordered the lemongrass chicken with spring roll on vermicelli (cold noodles). Apparently I was looking at an old menu online as I thought it was $12.50, but it was actually $18.50. I also ordered a Thai tea for $5. My total came out to $23-ish. When I gave the girl my credit card to pay, I asked if they had a to-go menu and she said, "yes, but first you have to sign off on the credit card because it asks about tip". I thought that was a strange thing to say. The food itself was good. The chicken was tasty and flavorful. The vermicelli was just your typical cold noodles, but it went well with the chicken. It also came with a side salad & dressing, which was tasty as well. Last of all, it came with a spring roll. I think it had beef inside. It was very good. Look out! There might actually be somewhere good to eat in Hawaii Kai! Chopstick and Rice is the only Vietnamese restaurant in the area (since the unfortunate incident to Bale). This place is located in the Hawaii Kai Towne Center, City Mill side. The inside already feels like your typical Vietnamese restaurant with big artwork, Vietnamese decor, and etc. The artwork of Waikīkī meeting Vietnam was interesting though. Food-wise, it's pretty good compared to other places outside of Chinatown. Portion size, price, selections, and customer service weren't quite up to par. Combo Pho is always a must and it's become my barometer for Vietnamese restaurants. The broth tells the story, which was pretty good! It had good, clean, simple flavors with just a hint of spices and aromatics. The amount of noodles was much less than usual. The meats had rare steak (didn't ask if I wanted it on the side), brisket, flank, tendon, tripe, and meatball). Again, small portions. Just a few slices of steak, brisket, and flank, 1.5 meatballs, and tendons had two small pieces, and ONE piece of tripe. Steak and flank were on the tough side. But congrats to Chopstick and Rice for offering the smallest and least amount of bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeño ever. We also ordered the Lemongrass Chicken and Spring Roll Vermicelli. This was decent. The chicken was tender and light on the lemongrass flavor. The nuoc cham sauce was simple and tasty. Need more fish sauce though. We wanted to add 1 additional spring roll, so the both of us would have a piece, but somehow got duped to ordering two more as an appetizer order. The spring rolls as the appetizer alone also came with the same Vermicelli noodles and same nuoc cham sauce as the cold noodle dish, plus green leaf lettuce. This was good. Crispy rolls, tasty sauce. Wish some chili peppers were added in to the sauce. Overall, the food wasn't too bad. It was acceptable for a Vietnamese restaurant, and may be the best restaurant in Hawaii Kai. The flavors were on the tamer side, and the portions need some adjusting. You don't want to be the place that serves the absolute least amount of vegetables for Pho. The service was pretty bad. This may be due to lack of experience, but all were not attentive, and food took a while to get to our table. Even taking our order took a while. There's this one server who always bumps into chairs and tables (one was hard enough to topple over the customer's waters), and drops down your food quite hard on your table. The table behind us finished just as we arrived, and it was never cleaned when we left. Idk. Maybe the manager was on their day off? First timer. Combo pho was large, brisket meat was a little chewy but overall broth was tasty and filling. Lemongrass chix sandwich was tasty and I was impressed as it tasted good the next day. Service could use more work as the younger staff didn't check on me and I had to wait to get my tab but just generally good customer service just to check in is always nice. There were only 2 people dining in and about 3 people who picked up their phone orders before I finally received my takeout box about 15 minutes after ordering. As I was eating it in my car I could tell it had been premade a while ago because one end of the rice paper wrapper was pretty dried out and very chewy. Why did I wait 15 minutes for something that was ready made in the fridge??! The filling was fine and fresh, with the standard rice noodles, beansprouts, and shrimp sliced in half, plus basil. Messy Takeout, Burnt Tofu--Not the Same Anymore We usually get takeout here, and while the food itself is typically pretty good, the way they package it is not appealing at all. If I had a separate rating just for presentation, it would be 1 star--the boxes always look messy, which doesn't make you excited to dig in. This last visit was especially disappointing. Both my husband's and my dishes had burnt tofu, and instead of remaking it, they seemed to try to cover it up with tons and tons of peanuts. Not great. On top of that, you can taste the old oil in the spring rolls, which is something they didn't used to have a problem with. When we first started ordering from here a few years ago, it was solid. But lately, the quality has been slipping, and that's frustrating. I know I sound over the top but no raw onions is not. I really want to love this place. They advertise vegan vegetarian gluten free food. This leads one to believe they can take a special order. So onions. Something so simple and not crazy. No raw onions. Spoke with them about what an onion is because they argued over the three wrong order previously . Which they blamed on the head chief being out. Chives included, these are onions. My husband had to go back 3 times to get our sandwiches without raw onions. So ok bad on us but we wanted to have a good place to eat. We said ok give them another try. Our sandwiches had raw chives/onions. I'm writing a review of my experience in the hopes that C&R will up their game. I recently had their won ton pho and usually it's good. But this time, there were 3 shrimp when I've always gotten 5-6, and the bean sprouts were browning. The original table I sat at smelled like the wash cloth needed to be changed, so I sat at another table. Better. Some of the wait people are polite and smiley, but a couple are so aloof that I wonder why they work there at all. When I received my receipt, there was someone else's bill in the folder. They just don't seem to care--from the kitchen prep to the wait staff. Other restaurants in the area have gone under and I would hate for C&R to drive themselves to the same fate. Today I got to try the Lemon Grass Chicken with Tofu and it was great. It was very clear that they were short staffed, but it was great to see that the 2 servers on duty were smiling while tackling all the duties at a non stop rate and could even be said that they were moving at a faster than normal rate. Finally a moment to enjoy... I have been wanting to visit here in Hawaii Kai Towne Center home to Costco and many wonderful local biz though this location doesn't give you the beautiful water views they dishes here are just does makes you go "aahhhh!" Surprisingly the dining space here is quite spacious as I walked in I was greeted and told that I may sit anywhere, did choose a simple small table against the wall and as I gazed at the menu which I was a bit disappointed that it didn't really list what's in each particular dish though we all know basically what it consists of, a reminder at times would be nice as I do tend to forget to request taking off certain garnishes that I didn't care for. I was really thinking of Pho went with the "Vermicelli Cold Noodle" it had to be the lemongrass chicken and spring roll and gosh yes it didn't disappoint, I initially dipped my cucumber in there to sample to sauce to then there it goes pour it all over! It did come with a garnish of nuts which the server asked if I was okay with which was nice and also green onion and I assume some fried onions as well which gave it a nice crunch. The noodle pull wasn't as phenomenal at it was all broken and made it quite difficult to pick up and eat wondering if that was the intention though I really didn't care for much of that. We've passed by this place a bunch of times but never went in. Well, I'm glad we finally did. Especially since Pho Time Niu Valley has closed now :( RIP I saw Pho Dip on the "specials" menu and asked about it - killed 2 birds since I love a good banh mi, but wanted to taste the pho. I'm more of the broth person, not the noodle person anyway (is that just me?). Anyway, it's funny it was written on the specials board, because it's on the regular menu. But I liked it, so that's a good thing! Flavors are ON POINT. That sandwich was so good! Made possible of course, by the tasty pho broth! You know what I hate? When a pho restaurant serves sorta-hot pho. Esp if there's rare/raw beef in the bowl. How is it gonna properly cook? Not Chopstick and Rice! Those bowls were steaming hotttttt, thank you! Others also ordered the vermicelli with spring roll and bbq pork, yum! And a side order of spring rolls because just one was not enough. Tons of free parking at HK Towne Center. I really used to love chopsticks and rice, and even have recommended it to others, but today I went in and it was completely different experience. Three bites into my soup and I found a fly (i wish I took a picture of it but i was in shock). My boyfriend and I immediately lost our appetite, and while the staff offered me another bowl of soup we just weren't craving anything else, we told them we didn't want to eat anymore. They took off my pho off the charge, but left my boyfriend's pho (which he took like 3-5 bites of) and then after my boyfriend asked about it they said they couldn't take it off. So my boyfriend ended up paying $20+ for a soup he barely took bites of and didn't want to eat after we found a fly in mine. Overall, this was just a sad experience! I do hope that they take better precautions when cleaning the restaurant and taking care of bugas a lot of people eat there. read more

Long bar, tv's on, with a football game on one and The Avengers showing on the other. The menu was simple with one price for each item. No sizes. My Combination Pho was pretty big. You get your moneys worth. The service was attentive and efficient. My first impression was it felt a little cold but it was friendlier near the end. So, would I go back? Tough call. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Hawai'i Kai area; a very clean and bright restaurant. The price is comparable to other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. There are lots of free parking in the shopping center. The food is delicious and the portions are very generous. Went back for a revisit a few nights ago and I had the combo pho, which comes with all their meat choices and it was pretty good. Soup base tasted the same, which is something that is key for me. The only issue with my pho was the amount of tendon that was included, I only found one piece but this time it was a nice chunk. This visit we also had the Bahn Mi sliders, and we chose grilled pork as the protein. The plate came with four individual little sandwiches/sliders and it was good. It is semi-build your own but the grilled pork was nicely charred and had great flavor. Service was good as always and I like that they don't come and check on you multiple times, once and I'm good. It is a slight bother when places check on you multiple times, it makes me feel rushed and I have a hard time enjoying the food. They have a big screen TV and they were showing the college football playoff game which was great, the sound isn't on but that's okay, there's no need. Since moving to the east side a few years ago, I've visited the Hawaii Kai Towne Center for my weekly Costco run. This week I decided to explore what other shops/eateries are here and was happy to have lunch at Chopstick and Rice. Located toward the Makai end of the mall close to City Mill and Koa Pancake house, I've driven past countless times and never noticed this gem of a restaurant. Large, bright, open indoor dining with table service makes it a very inviting location for a meal. The Great: Food Food Food! Even though it was hot I had to get a bowl of their combo pho which was packed full with an assortment of meat. Tendon, Tripe, and Beef Oh My...perfectly tender and nice assortment. Plenty of noods and great broth. We also enjoyed an order of the their crispy spring rolls that were crunchy and not overly oily. The Good: Somewhat limited on the drink menu but they did have an assortment of soft drinks by the can so no free refills. Staff was solid and food came out quickly. Very clean, bright, and open dining area and it was nice and cool which allowed me to enjoy a nice steamy bowl of Pho on a hot and humid day. The Okay: Nitpicky time, only wish they had adult beverages available, I think a nice cold beer or a crisp white wine would match perfectly with their food. I didn't think to ask if they were BYOB but that may be a good option. Overall: I need to return, heard great things about their fried chicken and I'd love get a taste of their Bahn Mi and their Bun Bo Hue! Awesome places and we will be back in the near future! Hey Yelpers! Chopsticks and Rice located near Ross in Hawaii Kai. This is my first time trying this restaurant. Let's start off with the food. I ordered the chicken pho which I included a picture of. I'm not an avid pho guy so I wasn't exactly sure what to order. However, the pho itself was wonderful. But the chicken... one could argue was a tad flavorless. Yet, I would come here again but perhaps order a different type of pho. The restaurant itself did not get too busy, a couple customers sharing a meal. The service was quick however workers seemed to be uninterested in their jobs. I'd hate to be hurtful but they were a bit unsettling. I don't know why. The vibe was just questionable. I've watched videos VIA Facebook on this "cult" called Scientology. They almost reminded me of them. Again, I hate to be hurtful but I almost felt unwelcome. Overall, I would eat here again. Oh yea, hankering for some hot spicy soup come here. It was a windy and drizzly kind of day so we were craving that warm comforting soupy meal. I've always seen this place when stopping by City Mill or Ross but just never had a chance to try it out. So upset I didn't try earlier, the regular beef pho and the spicy beef soup was very flavorful. The broth is extremely clean and doesn't have the fatty oils sitting at the top. They take their time perfecting the broth, the noodles were chewy and the meats were packed into the bowls. The lean meats are tougher and cut thicker than the other pho places I've been to on the island, the flank and brisket cuts are my fave. The spicy soup is not too spicy, just the right amount of heat to make you feel good. The mini banh mi sandwiches were amazing for my son who isn't a fan of soup, the baguette was soft and the filling was so ono. The grilled pork is tender and juicy. The staff is hurrying and trying their best, they are short handed so be kind and have patience. Remember, you are just sitting and waiting while they are working and stressing. My bf and I dined at Chopsticks & Rice in Hawaii Kai during our last trip to that side of the island, and we left feeling happy and satisfied. We both were craving some pho, and their bowls definitely hit the spot for me. We also ordered their spring roll appetizer, and we were very very happy with them. Do not come here hungry. The food is good. But they are slow. Like 45mins sitting with just your water slow (and no check ins or explanations or apologies). There is a lot of seating but they seem to get overwhelmed when busy. They clearly do a pretty hopping takeout business but they let that detract from their in-house dining service. They also do not seem to prioritize your order time, so as you sit and wait, be prepared to watch all the other tables that were empty when you ordered, get their orders first. We've eaten at this restaurant a few times for lunch, with standard orders being pho and Bahn mi, and the food is tasty, but I would never come here for dinner and it will take me a long time to get over tonight's service fail. Been so hesitant about coming here, thinking it would be an ordinary Chinese restaurant. Chopstick and Rice conveniently located in one of the corners of Hawaii Kai Town Center, next to City Mill, and we've been missing out this whole time. What finally made us go here? I was dying for pho. They say pho helps hangovers, and that ain't a lie. Well, we've only lived in Nalo for 2 years, and when I Yelp pho, this place pops up. We'd normally go bale, or somewhere in town... but mannn... this is our go to spot now!! So Sunday morning, I was dying for pho after a night of drinking, and had already planned to head over as soon as they opened at 11. 10? 11? Idk they open around 10,11. I woke up early that Sunday to do errands and chores and stuff, trying to get everything done before I get my pho fix... man inside is big. So much seating, tables for up to 2-4-6-8 people. They had bar seating, or high table seating. Our server was really nice and patient. He probably knew I was hanging lol, nah but yah and he didn't get our order wrong. Everything came out spot on as ordered. I ordered meatball only pho, no cilantro and the wife ordered tripe and tendon pho and Thai tea. We normally get spring rolls to eat with our pho, but one of the recs on Yelp said try the banh mi sliders. Again, was hesitant, but server suggested to try, so, we got an order. Man!!! Those banh mi sliders were so good!! We got bbq pork. Wife was really happy and liked her tripe and tendon pho. I felt a little better after eating, and those sliders made it better for us as well. So definitely would be back again. We gotta try the spring rolls, cuz spring rolls is a big thing for me when I eat pho. Sometimes, you just gotta have the spring roll wit your pho. 10/10 recommend.
