It's so nice to have your dentist one floor below you! Now, I absolutely hate going to the dentist. So after years of not going, I finally decided that I'm an adult, and need to take care of these things. Not getting any good recommendations from friends, I decided to cast my fate to the wind: if I couldn't find a recommended dentist, I'd settle for a close dentist. Aside from the fact that she keeps asking me if I want braces (ye gods, no!) I really think she's a good dentist, and I'm always in and out quickly. Also, when she hits a sensitive spot, she'll ease up. With other dentists, it's almost their cue to take it up a notch. Plus, I have a few teeth that are slightly chipped, so last visit she ground them down for me and didn't tack on anything extra, which was nice! The verdict: if you live in DC or MD, I don't think she'd be worth the trip, but if you live in the Arlington area and are unhappy with your dentist, you should give her a ring and try her out! read more

Dr. Phan is the BEST DENTIST EVER. Fast, flexible, gentle, friendly, and honest. I went on Saturday for a 9:00 am appointment and was all finished with a mouth full of pearly whites by 9:25. Scheduling and rescheduling has always been super easy. She is super efficient and I've never felt any needless pain. Dr. Phan doesn't oversell on services you don't need, and always has hilarious stories and delightful conversation which makes the time pass even easier. We moved away from Ballston some time ago but still hike out to Dr. Phan. No dentist comes close for my rotten chompers. read more

Don't come here if you want a reliable dentist. I scheduled an appointment for Friday, July 1st at 9:00am. I got a confirmation call from the front desk the day before confirming the date and time of the appointment. NO ONE WAS THERE. I understand that it is a holiday weekend, but they completely failed to take that into consideration when scheduling my appointment AFTER THEY CONFIRMED IT. The receptionist also sounded a little slow and out of touch on the phone as I was booking the appointment and when he called to confirm it. read more

My first time going to Dr. Phan was a great experience. Dr. Phan doesn't have a separate hygenist, so she cleans your teeth (nice and thoroughlly!) and examins you as well, which cuts down on the overall time of the entire visit since she can check out your teeth while cleaning them. Nice clean office, too. Dr. Phan has a bit of an accent, but she was VERY nice. The only reason why I didn't give her a perfect score was because she made me get x-rays (not sure of the cost, but don't think it was much within network), even though I was having my old dentist send over my most recent ones a few days later. Dr. Mai Phan is very gentle and skillful. Better yet, she is rarely busy. Appointments are easy to get. She keeps low overhead, with only a receptionist on staff, thus is able to charge very reasonable rates. I used her for repair of a broken tooth even though she was outside of my HMO network. Edit: I have to go back and remove a couple of stars because the repair she did on my tooth failed and came off after a month. By then, I had already moved to another state so had to get it redone somewhere else. read more

I live very closeby to Dr. Phan's office in Arlington, and when I first called she mentioned that she will make appointments on Saturday (score!) so I decided to give her a try. So far the proximity and her availability has made it incredibly easy to make sure I get a checkup and cleaning every 6 months. Dr. Phan is very nice and seems to really care about my teeth (maybe even more than I do), giving me suggestions and even filling in the gap between my middle teeth. (Which I considered an instant and far less painful form of braces, not to mention self-confidence in my smile again). She is efficient and saves time in the appointment by doing her own cleaning as well. I have recommended her to friends as far away as Springfield and I won't go anywhere else as long as I am in this area. read more

My husband and I both have used Dr. Phan's office for over two years. She is fast, thorough and efficient--I love that I can get appointments on Saturdays or as early as 8 AM and that I can have my teeth cleaned, checked, and minor cavities filled in 30 minutes! Highly recommend! We've been coming to Dr. Phan for over 10 years now and love her. We usually schedule dental cleanings for the family (me, my husband, and two sons 12 & 9 years old) on a Saturday and we're all done in about an hour - very convenient as we don't have to miss work or school for our dental check-ups. Her practice is small so you always get personal attention from her and she never tries to push you to do any more procedures that don't need which I have experienced at other dentists. Excellent choice! Highly recommend Ballston Dentistry (Dr. Phan). I needed *lot* of work on my teeth (they're a MESS due to a med issue.. and my fondness for sweets, smoothies & Mt.Dew), and she's done it all extremely well and with minimal discomfort. She can knock out X-rays, fillings, crowns, veneers, dental implants and advanced procedures right there. And she's a remarkable combo of pleasant, efficient and of course extremely competent, taking pride in her work and making sure I'm happy with the result. It's refreshing that she treats you like a person, not a number or cash cow. No suspicious "finding" expensive issues my previous dentist hadn't found, no dodgy up-selling or other used-car-salesman techniques. Just fixing problems and making my teeth look amazing. I'm grateful she kept working on my teeth even though my insurance took forever to pay (the Veterans' Choice program is notoriously slow since the VA is chronically underfunded). As a small biz I can only imagine it's a hardship doing so much work before seeing any reimbursement, but she's kept her commitment to work with me - honorable & appreciated! Also, she doesn't stick you with novocaine/lidocaine unless required. Don't get me wrong: she numbed me right up for a root canal because.. root canal! But I've had fillings elsewhere where the needles and fat-lip feeling were far worse than the actual surface-cavity filling would have been (there's no root there so you actually don't feel it, or only mild pressure); I appreciate judicious use and not overuse of drugs--though I'm sure she'd numb you up for any filling if you specifically ask. Dr. Phan is the sole dentist at Ballston Dentistry, which I quite like because you don't have to wonder who you'll see or wait around for the next-step person. Unlike some dentists' offices (or military clinics) it doesn't look like a Star Trek sickbay.. which I prefer because I'm already anxious enough about the dentist, and a small but bright and very clean office is exactly the thing to not scare me off. Bottom line: she's done wonders for my teeth with minimal stress or pain, which makes it super easy to recommend her to anyone remotely near Randolph Towers (between Ballston and Virginia Square metros). I have had Dr. Phan for my dentist for 10 years and she is experienced and it is nice to have a dentish clean your teeth to cut down on time she also examines as she cleans them and is considerate of her patients and considered of cost as she does your work. Our family went to this dentist after hearing a couple positive comments that she was good and a good value (and convenient to us). Dr. Phan and her receptionist are very nice people but I would NOT recommend her to anyone. As far as a good value, after checking a couple sources (online and our former dentist) she is NOT cheaper than other area dentists and slightly higher in some instances. She has no hygenist so she does all the work herself. She appears nervous and flustered at times and seemed not to know how to handle kids (even very calm ones) very well. One of the fillings she put in fell out within a couple weeks. The work area seems dusty. I wish I could report otherwise but I actively recommend you find another dentist. I know of one other patient who has had a similar experience with fillings falling out. read more

Just finished my fourth visit at Dr. Phan's office and I can't recommend her any more highly. She does absolutely everything (checks you in, takes X-rays, cleans your teeth, and consults) so there is absolutely no wait time. I was just in and out after X-rays and a cleaning in 15 minutes! I used to dread going to the dentist and felt like they were always finding something random that I'd need to get done, but with Dr. Phan each appointment has been quick and easy. She is worse dentist we have ever been. When we walked to her office for the first time, she was cleaning floor and we thought she is cleaner, then she gave us the registration form to fill out and we thought she is receptionist, then she took us inside and started cleaning our teeth and we thought she is hygiene, then she started taking X-Ray of teeth and then we thought she is dental assistant and I asked if she is Dr. Phan she said yes. She did not have receptionist, no dental assistant, no hygiene, I was patient and under the procedure of dental cleaning I had to help her holding suction tube in my mouth and writing down on paper she gave me to fill out. (Very stupid and ridicules) she doesn't have discipline of dentist at all, and plus she cannot even speak English well; we had hard time to understand her. We won't recommend her to any one at all. She just wants your money and keeps telling you to do more work on your teeth. read more
