We hired this company to renovate one bathroom with two vanities, as well as our kitchen. The kitchen renovation was very reasonably priced. It may be because we also ordered the bathroom renovation, but either way, the value was excellent. Our kitchen was transformed into a modern and much more spacious space. The renovation contractors who worked on our project were not very fluent in English, but they were extremely considerate, communicated patiently through gestures, and never showed any frustration. Fantastic people to work with and have used them since April 2021, after an unpleasant experience with another contractor, to March 2023. As my parents were in the way upper 80s, we needed to plan ahead and renovate to make the home elderly friendly. Grab bars everywhere, unobstructed walk-in showers, bathroom and bedroom doors wheelchair compliant and turn the family room into a downstairs bedroom. Maikai Cabinets helped us to keep the cost down and yet have quality materials, craftsmanship, and customer service. We're happy that the house is fully upgraded but sad we won't be working with Makai Cabinets for another 20-years to refresh the home. Initially everything was great, but since we had this remodel done, the shoddy workmanship has become evident. Most obvious is the grouting not being done well or cleanly. Something I just noticed is the panel from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet is just some random piece. There's a massive gap which you would only be able to see if your head was on the ground looking for something. Like something that fell and seemingly disappeared into thin air. I bet money it bounced into that gap and is now behind the panel. read more

Went there to look over our options for flooring, cabinets, showers and granite tops. Since it was a Sunday it was slow and there were only two associates to help clients. But surprisingly enough there were a few other people besides us when they first opened. We were helped by Scott. He was very helpful and easy to deal with. He knew his products and tried to be accommodating. Things looked nice and new, they have only been in their location since November. Because of the pandemic supplies are low in many stores. A friend ordered cabinets from another store in May and has to wait till August for delivery. The same holds true here, not all items in their show room is available for delivery right away, dr[ends on your selection. read more

Maika'i installed damaged/ defective floor tiles in both my bathrooms and tried to say the scratches were part of the "design" of the tiles. One bathroom had 18 scratches and the other had 14. The scratches are between 3-5 inches in length and are very noticeable on the polished surface. First they tried to say it wasn't noticeable then they said it was part of the design. They will not replace it or refund me enough so I can hire another contractor to replace it. The work supervisor Jun sent me pictures of another customers shower walls that had the same scratched tiles with red arrows pointing out the scratches and said it was "not noticeable unless you looked at it at an angle." This means they are installing defective/ damaged material in other customers homes too. I saved many years to afford this remodel and I am devastated by their poor work and materials. They also did a bad job of grout on the shower floors and bathroom floors and when I asked why the pipes they installed for my tub to walk in shower conversion were off center they said they always do it that way. If they had told me they planned to install the pipes off center before they did it I would have hired a different company. Communication is very poor with this company. None of the workers on site speak English and their "supervisor" is rarely there so the workers are left on their own and they have poor judgement and little common sense. The owner Q never answers e mails or text messages when you have concerns and the supervisor Jun tries to charge you extra to fix problems they caused that should have just been done right the first time. They were supposed to install shower doors I bought from Home Depot but on their first attempt the doors were askew and not aligning parallel to the shower walls and they only glued the door jams on instead of following the instruction manual and using the provided wall anchors and screws that came with the kit. Then they threw away the box. I sent them a video from Home Depot showing them how to do it. The supervisor Jun assured me that he and the workers had watched the video and would do it correctly with screws the next day. The next day I called Jun and he said he was there when they put the screws in. I told him that the door jams peeled off the walls because once again they only used glue and no screws. I had to hire a different contractor to put in the doors even though in our signed contract Maika'i was supposed to provide the labor to install the doors and I paid them to do it. The owner Q said that it wasn't necessary to follow the instruction manual for installing the doors because his office worker who used to work at Home Depot said it wasn't necessary. I would guess that this worker has never installed a Delta Contemporary sliding shower door in their life. They put so much grout on the shower floor it obscured the floor tiles and you couldn't pry out the shower drain if you had a clog that needed to be snaked. Then they chipped the tile when the chiseled off the excess grout off the drain cap. Other red flags to watch out for: they want most of the money upfront or halfway through with only 5% due at completion of work. This gives them little incentive to finish in a timely manner or do a good job the way a 50% at completion would. They wanted me to buy flooring from their store for them to install but it only had a 10 year warranty. I told them my brother's flooring from Bougainville had a lifetime warranty for residential use and Jun said they could make theirs a lifetime warranty because they worked closely with the manufacturer in China. I needed popcorn ceiling that had asbestos in it removed. Although the contract I signed with them said if the ceiling had asbestos it would have to be professionally abated, Jun told me they could remove it even though it had asbestos and "we do it all the time." I told him his workers didn't have protection from breathing it in and I didn't want them getting mesothelioma. I also didn't want me or my family to get mesothelioma from their contaminating the whole house and the abatement company said it is illegal to be dumping that stuff in regular trash. I could go on but this is getting pretty long. My advice to you would be to know they are not accredited with the Better Business Bureau but you can still file a complaint against them with the BBB and the BBB will work to mediate for you, you can file a complaint with the Hawaii state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, but most importantly do not hire this company! Save yourself the stress and sleepless nights. They are cheaper than most other companies but there is a reason for that. Sometimes you get what you pay for and sometimes you get even less than you paid for... read more

We found Maikai through our real estate agent (whom I found through yelp!). We quickly contacted and met up with them to get an estimate for our total 3-bedroom condo renovation. Their quote was not only cheaper than the other companies but also they were much easier to communicate and work with. They are very flexible with requests, customizations, and allowing us to find some of our own materials to integrate it into their work. David and Q were the point men on the project and made it very clear what was happening and what to expect. They gutted and rebuilt the entire 1200 sq ft condo in less than a month! This included plumbing, electricity, flooring, reconfiguring the kitchen, and a/c. They scraped the popcorn ceiling and had to work with our difficult cement walls and ceiling. They also came back and did our jalousie windows which made a huge difference in comfort. They have a lot of workers on their team including some with amazing skills like their tile guy. Just look at my bathrooms. We were so in love with the final products and he managed to make it happen after looking at our Pinterest photos and vague descriptions. We are thrilled with their work and recommend them to anyone looking to renovate. We are now working with them to get our new house completely built from the ground up. We are super excited! Btw they just opened a new show room in Aiea (near Home Depot). It's quite beautiful and has a lot of wonderful options that make deciding details much easier. we have a peculiar bathroom sink situation which was all done by the previous owner. So we had to just install a cabinet under the sink as it is fully uncovered. We checked at home depot, lowes and they couldnt help us as it had to be custom made and it would be more than $1000 plus a long wait. So we were to hoping to get more customization options at Mai'kai as its local and someone recommended it to us. They were helpful in cutting the planks etc but it still doesnt fit in our bathroom.. we still have a long way to go. They werent helping in giving us ideas on how we could do it. My wife and I recently hired Maika'i to renovate our townhome. Our overall experience was very positive, we received estimates from 8 contractors and while they were not the cheapest they were competitive with other quotes we received (we also received the "we don't want your job but if your dumb enough to pay us this we will do it") We worked with May who was always available to answer any questions we had along the way, we had some of our own materials and used some of theirs as well. The project was completed in a timely manner with very few hiccups (of course small problems came up but it was never an issue). With any project always check for quality . Overall quality was excellent there were a few things here and there, but Makai'i and their workers always took care of it right away. As other had mentioned their can be a language barrier but honestly it was never an issue between utilizing May and google translate communication was never an issue (and we lived in the house during renovations). The two main workers were amazing and any subcontractors that came were equally as professional. I would use them again and would recommend any one considering renovations to call for an estimate. All I can say is that Scott and his crew were absolutely phenomenal. He originally gave me a quote which was a decent price but included way more extras than all the other quotes, so I was willing to pay it. Scott made sure I had requested other quotes before making a final decision, and once I called to tell him that I had received the other quotes, he let me know that he spoke with his boss while I was getting other quotes, and before I could tell him the quotes were, he updated his which ended up being significantly better priced than all other quotes and included everything from the original quote. On to the job, they came right on time, and knocked out the demo in just a few hours. I rarely post review on Yelp, but this company deserves one! Maika'i Cabinet & Stone did an excellent job on our house. The job entailed our flooring, wall repair, kitchen, bathroom & small laundry room. We got quotes from several contractors, & we made the right decision picking Maika'i Cabinet & Stone. They made renovation process go as smoothly as possible. We worked closely with Jiaxin ("Jiajia") as our project manager. She is AWESOME & has a positive "can-do" attitude! She communicated with me day & night. The job took about a month, but I hardly missed days of work. She facetimed me on minor issues to show me, so I can decide on what to do. She made necessary suggestions on how to fix issue or how to make it work. She texted me every night to confirm workers & scope of work for the following day. Workers are polite, arrived on time, cleaned up after work. Jiang, one of the workers/carpenter, is great! He is skillful & meticulous with his work and knows his trade. Plumbing & Electrical work are the major work that we made sure we're home when the plumber & electrician were working. They have multiple teams of plumbers & electricians, which naturally, one team is better than others. That's when you have to point out to your PM which team you'd like to work more with. Overall, our renovation turned out exactly how I pictured it in my head or even BETTER! Flooring - We replaced our flooring in the kitchen, dining & living room from carpet, tiles & hardwood to luxury vinyl flooring. Hiccup: While I was inspecting the floor, there's a slight unleveled area. I told them it's not a big deal because that's where the kitchen island is gonna be. To my surprise, the following day, they ripped the area and re-did the flooring to correct it. Bonus points in my book! Wall repair - We decided to get rid of the side door and move our window to get more cabinet space area. They made sure the wall got done in one day, so we wouldn't have a big hole in our house overnight. Bathroom - We upgraded everything, but no layout changes. Hiccup: when they ripped the shower tiles, the wood/wall behind the tiles had water damage (as we feared), & the wood was soft, not strong enough to hold the new tiles. I was so worried about the additional repair cost. Mr. Q came by the house to assess the damage & gave us a very reasonable cost, & got it fixed the same day. Kitchen & Laundry room - We had a 1960's style kitchen. We got rid of the wall separating our dining room & kitchen, & made an entrance from kitchen to our laundry room. It's the biggest transformation we made. Jiajia was very patient with me changing the layout & the placing of cabinets, appliances. She revised the drawing countless times to accommodate all my kitchen wishlist. They custom-made some cabinets to make them work with our existing irregular measurements in our house. We desperately needed to renovate our kitchen cabinets as they were the original from 30+ years ago. Scott was one of the first ones to respond to my quote request on Yelp. Scott was very friendly and easy going. We quickly set up a meeting at the show room and the following week he came to our place for a free estimate. We waited about two months for our materials to be shipped which was fine since we didn't have to rush this project. During the time we waited for the materials, Scott did call or text us with updates. Finally it was project day- we started on Monday and finished on Friday. Scott was always here to manage the workers and make sure that everything was going in the right direction. We had a little hiccup with one of our electrical wire, but was quickly managed and fixed. They did my parents bathroom renovation. Most of the workers don't speak English so when you have a concern they don't understand and continue working and not taking your concerns into consideration. The shower panels after installed had scratches and they said that's the best they could do. I brought our concerns to Scott and his best he could do was a discount. I explained to him we are paying for new materials and it was their workers who made the mistake that they should change it out. Maikai is awesome Company! I asked for bathroom remodeling estimate. Maikai is clear answer and always good point telling me. Scott san is helping how choose tile, floor type, color and others at home depo that time. My plan is soak bathtub, marble tile and rainfall type shower and fall type bathtub hot water faucet, glass door new toilet bowl and new vinyl floor+vanity. I bought bathtub, toilet bowl, vanity, shower at Amazon, Home Depo, Lowe's. It is ON no problem and Maikai can install all. Scott san is checking all OK to install before start remodeling. He sent me picture Bathtub, glass door as my concern. All licensed Electrician, plumber as construction-company. All workers are hard workers and responsible job as professionals. I am very glad to find Maikai company. Beautiful flooring easy maintenance everyday. My 17 year old Trex deck was all rotted out. I saw Maika'i Flooring on my way to Costco Iwilei and discovered they do decks. Scott came out to give me a free estimate the day I called him, a Friday. He had me a very reasonable estimate that afternoon, for a complete demo and rebuild. His crew started Monday and were pretty much finished in 4 days of work, including painting (I couldn't believe how well they matched the paint color!) They worked hard to get the job done quickly but with good quality and workmanship. These guys definitely are all business, no goofing off like I've seen some other contractors, looking at their phones every 30 minutes. I would highly recommend Maika'i.
