Do you like halal food? No not the $5.99 stuff you get from a cart in Midtown. I'm talking, real halal food. If you're looking for it, this is probably as good of a place as any. Pro tip : stick to the chicken. I got the #19 split combo (one beef, one chicken kebab) and while the beef is ok, the chicken is phenomenal. Smoky, grilled, perfectly tender, juicy chunks of chicken. I have no idea what they do to it, but it's worth the price of admission. $8.99 for a platter with more rice you can eat, 2 kebabs, a garden salad and a nice piece of bread. Brought here by a friend who has committed to eating Halal only. After numerously accidentally taking him to restaurants where he can't eat the carne, and feeling mightily guilty for repeating our mistake... we finally let him choose the restaurant. Our only regret is why didn't we do so earlier?! Mouthwatering koftas here. Great lamb chops. I thought they were under-salted before but with the white sauce, it was perfect. Rice with the qalbani (sq?) was superb. The yelper who recommended the boolani was spot on. Even the chicken nuggets were good. My toddler didn't care for it but it was delish to us. This deserves a return visit. Only lack is atmosphere. Very casual. But very kid friendly. We'll be back :) read more

When we entered the man gave us the menu at the door and told us to sit wherever. I've never been to a restaurant where you carry your own menu to your table. I wouldn't have thought so much of it if they did the same with the people who came after us who seems like they are from the same county as the workers. After we ordered the waiter brought the food but didn't bring water or soda(that we ordered) when we asked him about the soda he told us to just get it from the fridge. Well at least I didn't have to walk to the kitchen to bring out the food myself which is why I give it two starts. Also the food was good. read more

My brother asked me to go but some take out food from this restaurant for I have never been here before. The employee that was taking the order looked like he was over worked , he wS rude and lack customer service training. AT the counter there is a sign that says we only accept cash, I inquired if they take credit card, this rude guy said yes but you have to pay tax. I was like whoa, I pay tax all the time. He said if you pay cash they do not charge tax. In other words they are cheating the city. When .y tray of food arrived I asked if he has a bag to place the tray in because it is hot , this guy flew into a rage. He said first time someone is asking to place a tray in a bag. What a Gem. A hidden treasure. Delightful. I am thoroughly addicted to this place. They have some of the best and freshest Afghan food in the city. They kebabs are juicy and rich with aromatic spices. Their samosas are just mouth watering (this is such a hidden treasure). Their portions are so generous and they pride themselves in this. Their white sauce is perfectly balanced, not too heavy and not too light. Their sauces are absolutely a great supplement to already delicious feast. Their Kabuli (Afghan rice) is an amazing balance of spices and rice and luscious carrots and raisins. The service is friendly and if you are a regular, they treat you like old friend. I have brought friends and ordered out (the combination menus are generous) and introduced the to this place and they are all huge fans now. Some notes: They don't serve alcohol and don't allow you to bring any which is fine but they have the standard fare of soda and snapple ice tea and a great middle eastern yogurt drink. Some of their items on the menu are not available on slow days (soup, appetizers) but I believe on the weekends they have the full menu. Since this is located by Queens College, parking is pretty difficult during school hours but in the evening, the street parking is plentiful. They also have a party space downstairs for large gatherings. Dont' miss out on this place. You won't regret it. read more

As a fixture here for many years and a fellow afghan this place has rapidly declined. The food quality has especially suffered. The meat is sometimes undercooked and they pile on extremely greasy rice. The food barely has any flavor and has to be drowned in white sauce to even be edible. God forbid you dine in here, the service is terrible. The cashier is also the waitress so be prepared to wait a long time before you get served or get your undercooked meat filled with 2 gallons of oil on the rice. Also enjoy the grease and food remnants on your table, menu, and seats. On the bright side its relatively cheap and you get what you pay for I guess. read more

I come here often for takeout. I usually get the chicken Tikka and the lamb Tikka. The chicken is always cooked to perfection and is very moist and tender. The lamb is tasty and also tender. Their white sauce is great. Highly recommend them! read more

Gotta love places like this especially when I'm too lazy to cook. I got beef kebab with chicken tikka over rice, beef shawarma and samosa and everything came out to $17 (to go). Beef kebab and chicken tikka were seasoned and cooked perfectly! I couldn't get enough of the samosa. Crunchy and soft at the same time. Yum! I didn't get to taste the shawarma but my husband said it was very good as well. The portions are huge that we only ate half of it and save the rest for the next day. White sauce and green chutney were definitely a great addition to the meal. They told me the green chutney is "very spicy" but I found it very mild. Would've been better if it had more spice to it. This places advertises itself as "cash only." But if you're willing to pay tax then they will accept credit/debit. The place didn't invest a lot in its decor. Looked like one of the many Indian restaurants in Jackson Heights. I guess it's suits their regular college/high school customer base. The prices are affordable compared to similar restaurants in the area. But the food itself is mediocre. For my first time visiting, I order their kofta/lamb/chicken kabab trio. They serve the dish with salad and bread. The salad was mainly lettuce and their bread was stale. The kababs itself were dry and not very flavorful and the rice was bland. My husband and I decided to try this place out a couple of weeks ago and were very pleasantly surprised. The food is excellent and the green sauce is very flavorful and not watered-down. The waiters were very attentive and the prices are more than reasonable. Also, the place is spotless. The only negative is that they don't accept credit cards, so be sure to hit up the ATM before you arrive. Woo...what a nice surprise. The wife wanted to hit Kabul Kabab on Main Street today for lunch but when we got there, we found out that they were closed for renovation. Worked out great for us. Food here was great although it was sort of no frills. If you want fancy, this probably isn't the place for you. If you want good halal at a really great price, come here. Beef kebabs were really flavorful. Rice was nicely cooked and seasoned. White yogurt sauce was spot on, just the right tang. Wife had chicken kabob and chicken tikka kabob, both of which were juicy and not dry. Sour cherry nectar to wash it down worked well. All this goodness for under 20 bucks. Will definitely come back. Tip - Not to be confused with Bakhter Halal Kabab on Fresh Meadows Lane. Owners are different although names are similar. This place certainly hits the spot if you're looking for a chicken and rice with white sauce craving. Their menu is pretty extensive, so you can also get anything from hamburgers to gyros too. We ordered take out on Friday night. We got the number 12 - 3 skewers of chicken kufta over rice, with salad and bread, and a Chicken Gyro on pita for just under $12. Not bad! Both were delicious. The chicken is tender and flavorful. The gyro is packed with meat, which is nice, but I would've liked for there to be a bit more lettuce? haha :) A nice even distribution at least! Although I've only eaten here once, I can already say for certain that this is a place to order take-out from. Don't dine in here; just don't. The interior is very drab with fluorescent lighting that reminds me of an unfinished basement. We were also there at the same time a freaking HUGE party of about 30 people (including a large handful of kids) was dining. It was some sort of party. It was extremely loud and the parents had no concept of keeping an eye on their children as they ran and screamed around the entire restaurant. Many times, they used our table as a kind of base in their game of tag. So, I will order delivery in the future because I don't ever want to risk competing with such a large crowd. Otherwise, the place was empty at first. We were allowed to choose where we sat, but because we sat near a table for six when a party of at least eight came in, we were asked to move our seats, which was annoying. Restaurants with actual respect for their paying customers wouldn't pull a switcheroo like that, in my opinion. The place could be a lot cleaner. The bottles of sauces (ketchup, yogurt, and something green - jalapeño, maybe?) all felt really greasy. I also saw a sizable beetle walking across the floor prior to ordering, which needless to say put me off. The potato wedges were wonderful. They were very large and nicely seasoned. I don't remember exactly what I ordered for my dinner, but i know it was beef something with chicken tikka over rice. The menu is so large, and yet so many of the plates are very nearly the same. The chicken was good. The beef was fatty and pretty forgettable. The yogurt sauce, though room temperature, is addictive. That said, I wish the dish came with its own sauce so I didn't have to keep reaching for the condiment bottles. I suppose I was expecting something really saucy, like the stuff from Halal trucks. But I now know that just because a place has "Halal" in the title, doesn't mean it will be like cart food... The place is also weirdly between wait service and self-service, kind of like a pizzeria. In my opinion, if you are going to have wait service at all, you may as well have the servers provide drinks as well. Having to get our own drinks from the fridge seemed a bit silly. So, if (IF) I ever want to eat this place's food again, which I probably won't, I am getting takeout! I suggest you do the same. Crappy or not, it's cool to have a seemingly authentic source of Afghan food in a sea of, well, non-Afghan food. read more

Food tastes better, service is faster and friendlier, decor is easier on the eyes (Fresh Meadows' Bakhtar looks like a cross between a ballroom and a fast food restaurant). No complaints here! We've had all their kababs in all their forms- beef, chicken, lamb, etc. The qabili pilau and mantu are great as well! If you like Halal vendor food, you must try this place. You can take the food to go or dine in like a real restaurant! I ordered combination # 1 which comes with beef kufta, lamb tikka, and chicken tikka with rice, salad & bread. We were served a small plate of salad before our main dish. We were provided condiments of green sauce (spicy), white sauce, and ketchup. Bakhtar Halal Kabab's white sauce is amazing. It's seasoned and I used it for my salad and my main dish. It took a while for our main dish to come out. The rice was fantastic. I'm Asian and I only know white rice and brown rice. Whatever rice this was, I love it. The lamb tikka was so tender and delicious, however it tasted more like beef which I didn't mind because it was so awesome. The chicken tikka was also tender and perfectly cooked. Like vendor halal food, I put white sauce on everything. The white sauce didn't taste greasy or fattening so I didn't feel guilty applying it to my dish. It made everything excellent to perfect, except for the beef kufta which still tasted weird. The beef kufta tasted like combination of dumpling pork meat and meatloaf. Maybe it wasn't cooked long enough. Lastly, the bread was okay. It was unflavored and chewy. Sauce did not help it. It wasn't great but it didn't feel out of place with the dish. Mango Lassi is a packaged yogurt drink that is not made by the restaurant. It's good but high in calories. You may think those $5 Halal platters are cheaper but at Bakhtar Halal Kabab you get a bigger portion and better tasting food for the price. It's worth the few extra dollars. The rice, beef tikka, and chicken tikka are so good, you will overlook any downsides. I will definitely eat here again. read more

This restuarant with its middle eastern vibes has inspired me to try and make my own kofta and tikka dishes. Their food is delicious and a great value at just under 10 dollars a plate. Starters with a salad and then a plate filled with meat and rice. The sauces are very good as well. Authentic Afghan food at great prices! This place knows what it wants to be and doesn't try to be anything it's not. The dining room is not going to blow anyone away but no one comes here for that. It's all about the food here. Bakhtar serves up juicy meat platters, seasoned perfectly atop perfectly cooked brown rice. All of the meat is fresh as they get it direct from their own market. You can't beat the prices at this place. for about $8 you get a full kebab platter, which is normally $12 and above everywhere else. The portions are very filling. If you want to try a sandwich, I highly recommend the doner which is made with lamb gyro inside freshly made afghan bread. One of the servers, Yasin, takes special care of us every time we come. His customer service is a good representation of the famous Afghan hospitality. Recommended for those new to afghan food: beef tikka and chicken tikka platter.
