The best Afghan food in Hicksville at an unbelievable price! This place is a great place to get your protein fix when you need it. The tikka kebabs are really good. I've tried all 3 types of meat skewers (lamb, beef, chicken) and I enjoy them all. White sauce and green sauce are both good to dip your meat in. The restaurant is nice. Very spacious and good for big groups. They let you have free tea and coffee while you wait for your food. The doodh pati is delightful! Glad to have this restaurant in the neighborhood. read more

Updated 10/2024: I came today after a long hiatus and the food I'm afraid was at most, subpar. We got our usuals: Chicken kebab and kofta platter with rice, salad and an order of Bolani. -The salad first of all was bitter and not good at all. I struggled through every bite and had to douse it in sauce. I stopped halfway through- I'm convinced it was sitting in the fridge or frozen even for a good amount of time- it was definitely not fresh. -The chicken kebab/kofta platter was dry and you can tell it's probably been sitting in the fridge a while. The rice came out lukewarm, like it'd be sitting out a while. The kofta was also dry. -The Bolani itself is what took this from the 2 stars I was originally going to give to the 3 stars. I would come back here ONLY FOR THE BOLANI. it is fresh, light, crispy, and perfectly filled. Some of the best I've had to date- so whenever I crave this in particular, I will make a trip back Otherwise, I will not be back here again, unfortunately. read more

Great spot for shish kebabs!! The food was freshly made and was delicious! I had halal type foods before and they have been greasy but this restaurant, that was not the case! Service was great! Came here during Ramadan an hour before iftar time for takeout. Gentlemen that was working there was very patient and polite. There was no one here at the time but assuming it would pick up later in the evening. They are open till 2AM which may just be during Ramadan. They have plenty of tables where they can accommodate large parties. Food was great. Same taste as the one located in Fresh Meadows. read more

3.5 stars Bakhtar is an Afgani halal restaurant which serves mostly kebabs but also burgers. We had to find street parking, but apparently there is parking in the back according to their menu. We had chicken nuggets with french fries, a rice platter with beef tikka kebab, and a mix platter with beef tikka, chicken kofta, and chicken tikka kebabs. The food comes with complimentary salad, which was nice and fresh. The green sauce and white sauce is pretty good. I usually don't like chicken nuggets, but this one was pretty good. Not the same as the American type. They are made of real pieces of chicken and has a smooth crispy exterior (not thick breading). The platters were ok, but I had better kebabs. The beef tikka was on the tough side, but after reheating the leftovers they were a bit on the soft and mushy side. I prefer the chicken tikka out of the kebabs we tried. Ask for qabeli if you want the carrots and raisins with the rice. Their bread is excellent though. read more

I placed a pick up order at this location and arrived 20 minutes after my pick up time and they said it would take another 5-10 minutes. When I asked why it's not ready yet, they stated they served my order to someone else because I didn't show up at exactly my pick up time. Not sure I understand this method for a pick up order. Although I appreciate their need to serve warm food, the fact that I had to wait an additional 10 minutes when it should have been ready was very frustrating. Randomly decided to stop by here. Took about 20 minutes for my to go order to be ready. I got the beef tikka and chicken kofta and an ayran drink. The white sauce that came with it wasn't the best, but the meat and rice was fabulous. The beef was a little spicy and everything tasted freshly grilled on a real flame. Ordered take out today. Upon getting hope found skewers of meat missing for 5 of the 8 platters ordered. The Kofta kebabs both chicken and beef were burnt on the ends and one side. The salad which was provided wasn't washed properly and had grit in it. The food was packaged badly where the green sauce leaked. The attitude of the owners/management is just unprofessional. Won't be visiting this establishment any more. This chain of Resturant at one point was a gem which has been going down overall to the point that it's just not worth it. read more

I really enjoy Bakhtar (Queens) Food, and so when I heard this spot opened up in Hicksville, I was SUPER excited. What made me even more excited? The owner of this location said they were the same bakhtar as the flushing one.... The prices are the same. The menu too.. for the most part. I enjoy the kofta pita sandwiches from Bakhtar in queens and I've had it twice at the hicksville location. Since March, I've been trying to re-order the chicken kofta sandwich from this location, and the same guy who picks up and answers (rudely) says they never offered that. I wouldn't make it up lol - my sister and I both had the sandwich from hicksville at different times with different people. So it disappeared? instead of being patronizing to [paying + loyal] customers, just say it was discontinued, or double check that it was never made and sold in hicksville, or just MAKE IT. If you're marketing yourself as being the same Bakhtar as the Queens one, maybe the menu should be the same? It was up until recently. Plus, they're cheap with their white sauce so be warned. But their prices are reasonable + an extra skewer of meat is cheaper than most places. read more

I'm Afghan. I love my food. But this place needs serious improvement (based on other reviews too). The first thing that went wrong was my brother's order. He wanted beef kofta kabab and they ran out so they decided they would just give him beef and lamb tikka without asking us. When we got to the restaurant they had already done it so we were like okay, whatever, because we were hungry. Then they forgot the extra bread we ordered for our nephew and they never even wrote it down because it wasn't on the receipt, but we said it twice. Then the food...the lamb and beef tikka tasted really old, chewy, and kind of like...flour? It was super odd. I also had ordered beef tikka and chicken tikka but they gave me chicken kofta instead. At least the chicken kofta was fresh and tasted good. I tried my friend's chicken tikka and it was a little dry. The rice didn't impress me but it was decent. The white sauce was my favorite part because it's delicious. The chutney is a little too watered down for me. It's just okay. I just have to only give this place a 2.5 because you have to communicate with your customers and your red meat is horrible. Please improve the quality! I remember loving this place when I tried it at their Flushing location a long time ago. I found out they opened in Hicksville, so I had to try it. I went with #1, which has three skewers (chicken tikka, chicken kofta, and beef tikka) over rice with salad and bread ($12.99). It looked delicious and I was expecting a great meal, but the skewers themselves were sort of disappointing. I really enjoyed the beef tikka. The beef was really flavorful and was cooked perfectly. The meat was tender and juicy even though it was cooked all the way through. The chicken tikka and chicken kofta skewers, however, were quite dry and overcooked. The chicken kofta was quite a bit overcooked and was somewhat tough to eat. The chicken tikka was just sort of dry. The rice was flavorful and the salad was nice and fresh. I like the bread that came with it as well. The white sauce was good, but the best sauce is the green sauce. This is more of a 3.5 star review, but I enjoyed the beef tikka so much that I rounded up. You can tell everything is fresh, the meat is so soft and juicy I'm salivating just thinking about it. The ingredients in the chicken kofta especially are so flavorful and delicious, it hits the spot right away. Actually good place! Loved the prices and the portions! Portions are huge! There are 3 large kebabs (got two lamb and one chicken) for $12, you can honestly split it between two people. I normally don't complain but this is the worst afghan food place. Do not go here unless you want to ruin your night. The one young guy running the place seemed like he wasn't being paid enough to be there. Seemed annoyed and in a haze even though the place was pretty empty. First he messed up the order and brought us chicken kofta when we ordered beef tikka + chicken tikka. I asked him what was that he brought? He seemed clueless, kept thinking for a minute then replied he didn't know. Whatever it was (probably chicken kofta) could hardly be described as grilled/ bbq. Seemed like it was deep fried -_- and dry and absolutely tasteless. The chicken tikka was raw. Yes, uncooked. The beef tikka he eventually brought by the time we were leaving was burned. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out the front guy and the chef were high on weed. The only good food item we ate there was the canned coca cola. There is no chance this restaurant is affiliated with the original fresh meadows restaurant. I refuse to believe it. This place has copied the name and signage design from the original Bakhtar, which just goes to show this place is run by disingenuous people and the horrible tasting food is a testament to that. read more

Finally I don't have to go to Jackson heights and eat form a cart to get this! This place is one of the better places for Afghan grill around the area, the chicken and lamb are super soft and tender. Often times grilled meat sometimes taste like rubber cause the cut is too thick or grilled on high heat for too long. This is not the case here! The lamb chops in particular are probably the best ones I have had around the area and in many ways better than many restaurants. They are minimally seasoned and have just the right amount of fat and thin of a cut to keep the meat juicy and tender. The rice is soft and flavorful. The bread I felt was a bit stale but I am not a fan of this kind of bread. The salad is basic lettuce tomatoes, cucumbers and some onions. read more

Just get some Heinz please, not this third party weird stuff. We had a group of 4 and we tried the lamb kabab, it was arguably the worst lamb we've ever had.
