I enjoy watching movies at Main Gate Movies. The things that I love most about Main Gate are the popcorn bucket, small theaters, bathrooms are clean AND the the movies are $5.99. The 2026 popcorn bucket is $17.99 and the refills for the year are $5.00 per refill. Sometimes I will go to Main Gate just for the popcorn, no movie. I had a very disappointing experience Saturday night. When I walked in, I was told my purse needed to be searched--yet not everyone around me was asked. Watching other patrons walk right in while I was singled out felt disrespectful and completely unfair. As a disabled veteran, I fully support reasonable security measures. If bag checks are required, they should be applied to everyone, not selectively. What happened did not feel like policy--it felt like poor judgement and inconsistent enforcement. I hope that management addresses this, trains staff properly, and ensures all patrons are treated with the same level of respect and fairness in the future. Took my niece here to see the new Trolls Band Together movie. It was pretty quiet when we arrived and we were the only people at first in the theater. This theater is a bit dated but you can't beat the movie ticket price which is $6.59. You have to buy your ticket at the counter as the front is no longer open. I bought ours online. We got a large buttered popcorn and large Icee. The popcorn was good did not taste stale and I saw the person put butter when the bucket was half full and then again when it was full. This is the Norfolk Naval Station main base theatre right outside the main exchange. It is not on base, but directly outside. Inexpensive ticket prices and decently sized screens. I can take 6 kids for the price of a date night at a regular theatre...including all the popcorn and drinks etc. They have a variety of food and an arcade area if you're waiting for people to arrive. Definitely a great back up place to keep in mind to take visiting family if other plans fall through or as a less expensive date night out. read more

Can't beat it for the price. Movie started about 30 minutes late and the place is a bit old. For about $6 a person with $7 large drinks (free same day refills) and $10 bottomless bucket of popcorn (keep the bucket come back $4.50 next visit) it's a winner for me and the kids! UPDATE: July 2019 - 1 star Daughter and I watched Spider-Man Far From Home movie; got a side showing of "Roaches Too Close For Comfort" as 2 good size bugs crawled on the wall right next to my daughter. Immediately, I understood #1: why the movie was $5.50 each & #2 I was not eating anymore popcorn, which btw, they told me mid-movie they no longer give a same day courtesy refills on the souvenir popcorn bucket. This theatre is located next to the NEX at Norfolk. You must have someone with you that is Active Duty , DOD or has a CAC or Retired Vet card. They show the newest movies. Always have the best fresh popcorn and hot dogs. The admission fees are amazing - $5.50 for adults. The prices at the snack stand are a bit pricey but all around still cheaper than a regular movie theatre. We always get a combo meal- tonight we got the 2 hot dogs with a large drink and a large popcorn with 2 drinks and it came to 29.00$ When you walk in to your right they have some arcade games and shuffle board game. Some 3D arcade games as well. Plenty of space for those busy nights. The wait has never been long here. The employees are always very helpful. I enjoy how clean it always seems to be also. I wish they would give this theatre a make over. I only go here because this is the closest theatre to my home. On some days, you have to go inside to the concession counter to purchase tickets. This place is run down and filthy. The speakers in the handful of theaters I've been in a busted and sound terrible. The price is cheap and affordable for families but the quality is the worst. In the handful of times my family and I have been here I'd say half of our experiences have included rude staff to top it all off. I thought it was a great spot to go to see a movie. It wasnt anything special you wouldn't find anywhere else, but the prices were awesome for what everyone wants from a movie theater. They had a special going on where you could buy a combo and get free candy all for $14. Our tickets cost $6.50 each because we had our military ID cards. The pop corn was, well delicious movie pop corn like anywhere else. The lights in the theater were not on while walking in nor exiting so that posed some problems for finding a seat and leaving. I come here at least twice a month and sometimes once a week. I love this movie theater because they offer $5 movies year round for nearly all new releases. Also, the people who work there are friendly and helpful. They have a really good deal where if you buy a huge $10 plastic bucket, you can bring it with you to refill at each movie for $3.50. This place is really good for a cheap date night because for a movie for two + a huge popcorn and large drink you will pay $19.25 (no tax). The reason why I have to give this theater 2 stars is because I have had multiple issues with one of the employees here. Every time I come and am helped by this individual there is always an unpleasant experience and most recently it really got out of hand. I have addressed it with a manager and the general manager of this establishment, so I will edit this review if my future experiences with this theater change. read more

It's a decent deal. The seats and theater floors are, to put it in the nicest way possible, vile. Like... atrocious and disgusting. Next time you go, use your phone flashlight to look at the cloth before you sit down. I've read these other reviews and I don't know how any of them say this place is clean. This is the preeminent movie theater that primarily serves the Naval Base and northern area of Norfolk. For your movie going experience if all you want to do is simply watch a movie then Main Gate will do. However, I was very disappointed at how shabby of a building it is. Movie theaters here are VERY clean. The employees here take great care of their facilities. The bathrooms can use a bit more work. The movies here are 5$ all day everyday. This place is a dump. Smells musty, old stained chairs that are worn and not comfortable, the picture didn't line up to the screen, and they never could get it fixed. The operator would touch the projector throughout the movie ruining our experience. This place should be destroyed and/or remodeled. I will never come back. Overall 4 stars because the theater is so run down. The floors are sticky, the seats may be old I actually get itchy thinking bout them seats, and they're uncomfortable. BUT, they make up for it in price! $5per person which can make for a cheap date or a night out with the homies/family. They have an arcade room that seems to have most of the machines working, the concession stand is not as expensive as other theaters. This is a great place to go for a nice movie date. It's calm, quiet, and usually really clean. It's not the most upgraded theater out there, but it has character and a friendly staff. Plus you get the opportunity to make your date laugh hilariously at you while you challenge them to a game in the small arcade right out of the lobby. I went to this theater often because it was near my workplace. This used to be a run down 1 star theater. New ownership and improvements. Some decor changes. Snacks/food selection is ok but the prices are better than most in the area. They recently added 3D movies. Watched Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday. 3D for $8. Can't beat that. What's missing? IMAX. I can do without. What I don't miss.... loud, obnoxious kids, teens and movie goers at Lynnhaven, Military Circle or McArthur mall theaters. This theater is always pretty quite during the day. We were greeted by a very pleasant young woman named Kamryn at the concession stand. We purchased our tickets there and our snacks. We ordered 2 small popcorns and she advised us of a better value large popcorn with a free refill. The only problem was that I wanted plain and my daughter wanted butter. This theater is not new and the seats are not the luxury stadium seats. The venue was clean but not modern. I like this theater because there is always available parking and the tickets are $5.00 everyday all day. The other plus is the price for concessions. You can purchase a bucket filled with popcorn for a small price ($10), bring it back on each return visit and get if filled for only $4. Recently I stopped going to this theater due to the poor customer service and LACK of professionalism . I decided to order popcorn and I was served by a young man name Noah. I was trying to get back to the movie, this young man did not prioritize me as a customer because he was moving very slow. Also, Noah was wearing a black Adidas hat with his uniform, I know for a fact that is not a part of the uniform because it did not say Main Gate - the managers need to train the employees better and the employee needs to take pride in the craft. This review is for a particular employee. A manager to be exact. I walked in and all the employees were behind the concession stand on their phones including the manager. I don't really care about that aspect but really speaks to the professionalism of the manager. My husband and I went to check out the photo booth which appeared to be off. We looked around it a bit out of curiosity and when I looked up to ask the employees and the manager if it was broken the manager was already looking at me with an "are you an idiot look" and then responded very smuggly, "it's broken." And then proceeded to roll her eyes at me and look down at her phone. I never really expect much from movie theater employees but I also don't expect to feel like they are purposely trying to make me uncomfortable. And just to be clear it had been the first interaction with her I had ever had so I don't think I did anything to her to get that kind of treatment. And maybe that is just her personality but if so, then higher management should consider giving her some tips on being polite to customers. Would've given the theater more stars but it's appearance and cleanliness isn't really anything to write home about. But 2 stars because you get what you pay for. Including the service. read more
