    The Naro Marquee

If you have an appreciation for the movies, make sure to support the Naro. A historic theatre in Ghent, this one screen movie theatre is an amazing place to visit. Playing everything from classic films, to Rocky Horror with live cast, to big blockbusters, it's not hard to find something that gets you in the door! We recently saw Dune Part Two, and it was a great experience. The box office opens a half hour before the show, but you can also buy tickets online. There's no reserved seating, but that's something I like! Tickets are super fairly priced, and the concession stand? I don't know if any other movie theatre where you can get two drinks, a homemade XL chocolate cookie, candy, and a large popcorn for less than $20. You can here! The Naro is truly an amazing place that deserves your patronage!

Local haunt, happy to see they've weathered the Covid storm. Remember Rocky Horror showings on Fri/Sat nights in my teens. Funny my recent visit was for a close friends' daughter's 13yo birthday. No better way to celebrate than a private party to watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off, complete with concessions and a personal marquee message (extra charges for the latter 2 options). 500 seat theater was clean, including lobby and restrooms. Movie sound (Dolby digital) and picture quality was great. "Life Moves Pretty Fast. If You Don't Stop And Look Around Once In A While, You Could Miss It."

    Ticket with time stamps

After attending the 8th annual galentines movie showing I was left with quite the distaste for this theatre. After purchasing tickets online we were given the time period of 7:15-10:15 (direct from the theatre). The movie ended early around 9:30 so I instantly called my ride that was 30 minutes away because the time is inaccurate. We totally understood the time mess up but on top of this, they kicked every single person out onto the streets at 9:45. So instead of protecting women and giving us at least until the allowed time indoors, you must go stand on the street in the cold. There were close to 20 groups of women awaiting rides standing outside alone in the cold. It is one block away from project housing so this felt quite insane of the theatre to do. I guess I recommend if you drive yourself and are a man that can park on the projects block, because they have no parking.

This here was my 2nd visit to Naro Cinema. On this particular night, they played The Room, one of the worst movies of all time. Might you ask why would I check out a really bad movie? Since being made by Tommy Wiseau in 2003, The Room turned out to be so bad (it was REALLY awful) that every year since its release it would play year-round as a cult movie across the nation. Fans would even dress up as some of the characters, yell movie lines during the showing (A tip to give you: if you haven't seen the movie, watch it at home first instead at a theater) and throw spoons everywhere inside when a scene with a portrait of a spoon would show up. But enough about Tommy Wiseau's 'masterpiece'. Let's talk about the cinema itself. Naro Cinema is an old school place that you would check out growing up way back when. They do serve condiments and the screen's not a big screen like you see in hi-tech theaters nowadays. And the seats come as they are without any reclining as well, which is a-OK. They show classic movies, new independent movies, cult hits like The Room and Rocky Horror Picture Show (which was during my first trip out to Naro years ago) and on Fridays they have Flick-It Fridays where they play movies of various genres (horror, 80's movies, etc). Price of tickets is $10 for adults, which seems very reasonable. It's really worth checking out if you want to go through nostalgia on how cinemas used to be back in the 50's.

I love Norfolk and the Naro is one of a kind. They have fun themes nights where they play cult classic faves. I'm here watching Mean Girls! I definitely recommend visiting at least once!

Such a fun place to watch a movie. I love that they show movies I grew w up with and can now share with my daughter.

I absolutely love this theatre. I just moved here not long ago after a traumatic fire. I found movies keep my mind occupied and have helped me heal. I've probably gone to at least 40 movies here and it feels like home. The people who work here are some of the kindest, warmest, and most accepting people I've ever met. The other patrons are also amazing, chatting in the theatre before the curtains open. Their flashback features are interactive and I love how the crowd really gets hyped up and into it. They sell some extra concessions during those to help local community efforts like the Muse Writing Center. Their Rocky Horror Picture Show is *so much fun!* The live cast is such a hoot. I'll always be the one in a sweatshirt who looks like I should be on my couch at home with a cat on my lap because corsets are just not happening for me anymore, but I love that everyone dresses up for it. I also love that no one judges me for my oversized sweatshirt and messy ponytail either! A local movie critic, Mal Vincent, continues to live on in this theatre as they play classic movies at certain times during the year. Those special events have broadened my horizons and introduced me to old movies with great stories to tell. I've learned so much from the people who introduce them. Their festive features around the holidays have helped me keep the Christmas spirit. They played White Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, Elf, A Christmas Story, and my absolute favorite Muppet Christmas Carol (light the lamp not the rat!). Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention their showing of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Who doesn't love Marcel?! I've lived pretty much everywhere and I can tell you places like the Naro just don't exist anymore. It's a true community movie theatre filled with wonderful people. Please go visit them, you won't be disappointed. :)

This theatre is nothing less than a Norfolk treasure! It is the heart and soul of the Ghent neighborhood. This classic retro theater has been hub of the local arts scene for decades. They screen a diverse and eclectic variety of films, from independent and foreign releases, to revivals of classics and cult classics. They also host several film festivals during the year. They also host a midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, complete with a great live cast, on the 4th and 5th Fridays of the month. That is certainly something you must experience in your lifetime. As for the theatre itself, it is comfortable and in good shape. They also have the best concessions in town. They are not only reasonable in price, but offer a great selection of local baked goodies on top of the classics. To properly experience Norfolk culture, you must attend a film at the Naro!

I love this cinema. It still has the classic feel of going out to the movies. Instead of a commercially run place you get plush chairs and balcony seating. The concession stand is filled with delicious locally made goodies and of course awesome drinks. If you come in on Flick It Fridays they even serve beer and wine, which profits go to a local charity. They show Rocky Horror with a live cast twice a month, and even have live shows like Burlesque seasonally. It is am awesome place run by awesome people. I recently got to see Hocus Pocus on the big screen. The show sold out and it was a blast!! I recommend it to anyone who wants a special night out at the movies. And once you finish you can go grab a bite at one of the many amazing places on Colley or in Ghent.

Plush seating, actual tables, and servers bringing food while explosions happen on screen makes you feel like royalty who also enjoys popcorn and bad decisions at the concession stand. The theater itself looks like old-school Hollywood decided to move to Portsmouth and never left. The sound is incredible, the screen is huge, and somehow even the fries feel like they deserve an award nomination. Honestly ruined regular movie theaters for me. Now when I go anywhere else, I'm confused why no one is bringing me dinner while I emotionally recover from plot twists. Five stars. Come hungry, leave happy, and prepare to become dramatically judgmental about every other theater afterward.

Tickets for this movie theater they do not do advanced tickets and you cannot call in advance to get tickets or go to the place to get tickets. It's the same day ticket sale in for an adult. It's $12 and if you pay cash you get a percentage off. So for us, we managed to get tickets for this movie in particular because it most of the movie theaters for this week. We're completely sold out but definitely wanted to experience the cinema in a classic way in this theater is the place if you want that type of experience. For opening night for a wicked released, they had a YellowBrickRoad carpet for a perfect opportunity for photos they did also have souvenir wine glasses for 20 bucks. The glasses itself is larger than your average wine glass so for all my wine lovers if you want a keep safe I definitely will recommend getting this and they did have a special menu for tonight since it is a big production movie, the layout when you walk into the theater is beautiful. It's definitely something meant to be more of a romantic but classic . You have the lounge chair You have a lamp set up at the table, as well as as your way of ordering your food is through a telephone where it goes straight to the kitchen and they answer automatically and the wait time for the food is not long at all. We got our food shortly after the movie started it which was perfect. The only thing for this movie theater is that any food orders will need to be before the show begins, so I would recommend anybody that does see it a movie at the theater you had to arrive early to be able to put place your order as they prefer to place your order before the movie starts so there won't be an interruptions on people ordering food through throughout the movie. Which is definitely a good way of making sure everyone has all their movie snacks their movie food their movie drinks before the movie start so that you can actually enjoy the movie about having to stop in ordered or be interrupted to order some food so that a plus for them very clever for them to do that. they had different options for tonight due to the opening night of wicked but normally they do have only beer and wine as their main options for alcohol beverage and of course you have your non-alcohol beverage items as well and I got was a specialty drink very light and sweet and on the menu, they have a variety of classic movie foods as well as sandwiches. I got their fish sandwich which was very crispy, but nicely crispy and have that with fries also very good. Definitely a good combination. The atmosphere of the layer of the theater itself is more of like a old school classic theater, where you have the curtains and then the big screen very appealing when you first walk in and the seating is very stressful from each other, so the chairs itself are movable where you can adjust it to your comfort. Overall, it was definitely a fun experience and the movie itself was a 10 out of 10 and I highly recommend this theater if you want more of a classic theater with a beautiful background and layout and of course, a fun way to place your order through a telephone which I find that very unique to do in a fun way.

The seats and theaters are clean, everything felt very new. Our waiter (I believe his name is Evan) was so nice, quick, and helpful! We were in row 3, which was a little bit too close to the screen for our taste, however the seats recline so your view is not obstructed. We didn't mind row 3, but next time we will go further back. The food and tickets were decently priced, we were very happy with that. The food quality was a little bit better than regular concession food. Our food was lukewarm, but very large portions. They have all the condiments and utensils right there for you! Very nice place, we will be back!

Rather than assisting us, he simply pointed a finger toward concessions and directed us there to redeem our movie passes. The concessions area was not much better. The first thing you notice is the overwhelming smell of burnt popcorn, and the counters were covered in liquid from spilled or splashed drinks. The only bright spot of the entire experience was the young lady working behind the concession counter, who was polite and kind. We ordered two large drinks and a large popcorn, only to be told they couldn't sell large drinks because they had no lids. Instead, we were offered (and charged for) large ICEE cups. When it came time to pay and redeem our movie ticket vouchers, the employee repeatedly tried to process them without success before finally calling a manager. The manager slowly walked over, then slowly walked back to the ticket counter to retrieve replacement tickets. She eventually returned while we continued waiting, now approximately eight minutes late for our movie. We then had to wait even longer for the employee to finish washing her hands before she could scan the tickets. Once we finally made it to the drink machines, one of them wasn't working. Then we discovered the butter dispenser wasn't working either. My husband, who is handicapped, had to walk to the opposite side of the counter just to get butter for our popcorn. By this point, we were roughly 15 minutes late for the movie we had paid to see. Unfortunately, the problems didn't stop there. When we entered the theater, the trash cans were overflowing and the floors were covered with popcorn and other garbage. We finally reached our seats only to discover that the theater did not have reclining seats. My husband struggled to get comfortable for the first half of the movie. To make matters worse, the auditorium was so warm that we were sweating. I actually had to leave the movie and track down the employee at the ticket counter--the only staff member I could find--to ask if someone could please turn on the air conditioning. This theater appears to be poorly managed, understaffed, and lacking even the most basic attention to cleanliness and customer service. From the dirty concessions area, malfunctioning equipment, and overflowing trash to the lack of urgency from management and uncomfortable theater conditions, nearly every aspect of our visit was frustrating. I will never return to this theater, and after this experience, it's easy to understand why so many movie theaters are struggling to keep customers coming back.
