    In Theater 8 Medium Popcorn
    Haley C.

This is my 2nd time at this theater and it was a pleasant experience once again! It's hard to not be drawn to the smell of popcorn when walking around the Macarthur Center Mall since the theater is on the 3rd floor of it. Boyfriend and I went on Valentine's Day at 7PM (movie started at 7:30) and it wasn't crowded at all! We went to go see Megan and after getting our concessions we headed inside around 7:10 and the theater was pretty empty! A lot of people showed up right at 7:30 and a few trickling in as the movie started. However still not packed at all and everyone was pretty spaced out. They have $5 movie tickets and 50% of popcorn on Tuesdays for Regal Members so that was a bonus! Everything went great and we really enjoyed the movie!

I had a fun day with my son and decided to take him to see The Secret Lives of Pets 2 for the Saturday 3:50 showing. I purchased our tickets through the Regal App and so all I had to do was scan my phone and we were in. We actually didn't want any snacks so we proceeded to theater 11, which was far towards the back. There are no bells and whistles with this theater. The seats are basic with a little rock to it. My six year old had a hard time sitting comfortably in his chair because it would keep folding up on him. He sat on my lap the whole time. On the way out, we ordered a soft pretzel to go. I was told to "go down to the other end and you can pick it up there." There was no one there and no light on. I do love how it's in a mall and you can go have dinner afterwards or you can shop beforehand.

It was my first time here. I'll start with the good points: exceptionally friendly staff at both the ticket counter and concession stand, they offer military discounts, and I like their nacho sauce. Other than that, I won't return because as soon as we entered the movie auditorium a foul odor took over- it smelled like mildew and mold, but strong. The stench is still on my clothes after the movie and I feel like my clothes are contaminated with mold spores. Also, the chairs were not reclining seats and the seats themselves were old and dirty. The bathroom stalls seemed to be clogged. If you rarely go to a movie as in my case, I expect the entire experience to be at least pleasant, I can not recommend anyone spending their money here.

Had a very good time last night. Enjoyed birds of prey! My only constructive critisim is to have someone sweeping up popcorn in the entrance of the theater rooms. Very nice place and time we had. Staff was lovely. :)

A fun afternoon at the movie with my son today. This is probably my fourth time at this particular theater. I am more of an AMC fan myself, but this one delivers just fine. This cinema is located at the top floor of MacArthur Mall. No doubt aesthetically the general area it is very pleasing to the eye perched up so high with neat views over the balcony. The lobby was clean, so no issues here. The carpeting is well maintained and no stains were obvious to me. Lot of screens, 18 I believe... the place is HUGE! I had a positive interaction with a manager who took care of a small problem with ticketing. They had misunderstood on my advance ticket that it was one adult and one child and charged me for two adults. This ended up being a $4 error and I did not catch it until going in. The male manger who was professionally dressed with a blue blazer apologized and quickly credited the amount back to my card. I could probably remove a star for the mistake, but instead will leave it alone due to the great interaction with Regal management. How can you go to the movie with a kid and not stop off at concessions... sigh! Oh well, at least my son is pretty easy to please and not as expensive as my daughter. The young girl as the counter was friendly and got the order correct. A medium lemonade with light ice and a medium popcorn was $6, I guess that did not sting too much. The popcorn tasted good to both of us. Only complaint in this area is there could have been six employees cover all cash registers with such a big premier as the new Hunger Game movie. The movie theater itself was clean and seats we sat in were comfortable. They have nice stadium seating with nice arm chairs the fold up to cozy next to your lovey. Also large drink holders that are a must. The seats DO NOT recline in this theater which is only a slight draw back. I personally do like the reclining seats. There were no issues with the operation of the film and the movie started on time. Lighting on the floor worked great and this is important because there are a lot of steps. The trash area at the end is a large bucket on wheels. This is my only disappointment with the theater. I think it would be nice to not have the trash cans exposed, just looks unprofessional. I would come back here again, no problem. I most certainly come here a lot to shop, so why not. I still think that AMC as an advantage and just seems like a better overall movie experience, but my opinion only.

Prices are beyond expensive for refreshments
    Anissa W.

I took my son to see the LEGO movie on a busy weekend and there were only TWO lines open for refreshments. The service was extremely slow and the prices are astronomical!!! I gave in and bought him a pizza, kiddie drink, and I got a snack pack. I paid over $20!!!! I could've gone across the mall to Chili's and bought a meal and dessert for us with that. For this movie, we had assigned seating. That was ok. The theater was dirty, but I'm sure they can make it spotless between shows. Parking can be validated, so make sure you bring your parking ticket inside. I still ended up having to pay 50 cents, but it's better than their normal pricing. I come here because of the location, so I will definitely be back. I'm just shocked at the prices!

I'm from Los Angeles where art house films can be seen at art house theaters or established theaters like AMC or Regal. Naro is THE place I can count on to play awards campaign films, but they'll also have an incredible showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show :) The staff is super friendly and you can tell they love to be there - they're my kind of people who love film. Ticket prices are cheap (I usually buy them online) and food prices are reasonable. I love coming here because theaters are dying and places like this need to continue living! They have home baked goods like brownies and baklava, wonder whose home they came from, no labels of ingredients or when they're good until! Neat part is that there is a balcony section. My first time here, had always wanted to go in the almost 7 years that I relocated to VA Beach from NoVA/DC area. Speaking of which the draw of this theatre is that they show independent films, love it! Wish they have more choices though, only two film showings per day. Am watching Black Bag today, should be a good spy thriller movie starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender.

Gentle reader, I have...a past. Yes, indeed. Way back in the 1990s, yes, the late 1900s, I lived…read morein southeastern Virginia, and worked in downtown Portsmouth. This is where I discovered the Commodore. It was, indeed, joy. I had spent time in my teenage years working at movie theaters selling popcorn and soda, and in my very young years when we didn't have AC in our house we would spend Saturdays at the old "third run" movie theaters where for $1 you could watch the movie several times without an issue. Sticky floors, giant buckets of popcorn, wobbly seats, that was my youth and I loved it. So, finding the Commodore, which was being restored at the time, was delightful, because the owner was creating a special experience - a theater where you sit at small cafe tables, each with it's own dim light and telephone. You order by telephone and food is brought out while you watch the movie. Seats are plush and roll smoothly along the soft carpet. The BEST part, though, is the SOUND. To explain, I must tell this story: In 1996 I had a challenging situation at work. Our company was celebrating it's 50th year in business and they wanted each location to have a celebration party that the senior executives would join, and one site would be named 'the best'. Our slot was in November, had to be during the work day, and no alcohol. Hmm. Then we realized the Commodore was also 50 years old - yay! We designed a 'murder at the theater' mystery that took place in 1946. In discussing our plans with the owner, a man I think named Fred, he told us the story of how he came to own the place - a movie nut - and that as a retired engineer he realized the walls were very thick and the space could handle a superior sound system without disrupting anyone outside the building. So he went about figuring ways to install a THX like system - long before THX became a licensed product. He was having some difficulty and wrote a highly technical letter to Skywalker Sound, asking for their thoughts on solutions. The team was so enamored of the project that they came out and helped him complete the installation. The result, gentle reader, is outstanding sound. Truly. For example, we saw Dances with Wolves there and I ducked when I heard those bullets whizzing by my ear. Until we did this event though I never knew the story behind it. Fast forward to this year. I moved away from the area decades ago, but was in town for an event, and yes, I planned to go to the Commodore during my stay. What I saw was so much what I had remembered and more. Restorations had continued, and the lobby had more decor, including an alcove that was set up like a scene from past times. Staff were great. No online ordering, you go to the box office to get tickets. Go. If you like movies at all, go. This place is amazing, unique, special, all those words. You bet I'll be back. PS. Bonus points from me if you can tell me why George Lucas named his groundbreaking sound system THX. :)

Plush seating, actual tables, and servers bringing food while explosions happen on screen makes you feel like royalty who also enjoys popcorn and bad decisions at the concession stand. The theater itself looks like old-school Hollywood decided to move to Portsmouth and never left. The sound is incredible, the screen is huge, and somehow even the fries feel like they deserve an award nomination. Honestly ruined regular movie theaters for me. Now when I go anywhere else, I'm confused why no one is bringing me dinner while I emotionally recover from plot twists. Five stars. Come hungry, leave happy, and prepare to become dramatically judgmental about every other theater afterward.

Rather than assisting us, he simply pointed a finger toward concessions and directed us there to redeem our movie passes. The concessions area was not much better. The first thing you notice is the overwhelming smell of burnt popcorn, and the counters were covered in liquid from spilled or splashed drinks. The only bright spot of the entire experience was the young lady working behind the concession counter, who was polite and kind. We ordered two large drinks and a large popcorn, only to be told they couldn't sell large drinks because they had no lids. Instead, we were offered (and charged for) large ICEE cups. When it came time to pay and redeem our movie ticket vouchers, the employee repeatedly tried to process them without success before finally calling a manager. The manager slowly walked over, then slowly walked back to the ticket counter to retrieve replacement tickets. She eventually returned while we continued waiting, now approximately eight minutes late for our movie. We then had to wait even longer for the employee to finish washing her hands before she could scan the tickets. Once we finally made it to the drink machines, one of them wasn't working. Then we discovered the butter dispenser wasn't working either. My husband, who is handicapped, had to walk to the opposite side of the counter just to get butter for our popcorn. By this point, we were roughly 15 minutes late for the movie we had paid to see. Unfortunately, the problems didn't stop there. When we entered the theater, the trash cans were overflowing and the floors were covered with popcorn and other garbage. We finally reached our seats only to discover that the theater did not have reclining seats. My husband struggled to get comfortable for the first half of the movie. To make matters worse, the auditorium was so warm that we were sweating. I actually had to leave the movie and track down the employee at the ticket counter--the only staff member I could find--to ask if someone could please turn on the air conditioning. This theater appears to be poorly managed, understaffed, and lacking even the most basic attention to cleanliness and customer service. From the dirty concessions area, malfunctioning equipment, and overflowing trash to the lack of urgency from management and uncomfortable theater conditions, nearly every aspect of our visit was frustrating. I will never return to this theater, and after this experience, it's easy to understand why so many movie theaters are struggling to keep customers coming back.
