When the best bike mechanic from the NW suburbs moves from a bike shop in Palatine to Carpentersville, it is time to go to the new shop. I have trusted VJ to work on my Cannondale Super Six Evo for many years. This morning he replaced my lizard skin bar tape with Supacaz super sticky kush bar tape. Also he replaced some warn derailleur cables and brake cables. My chain was worn out and he replaced with a new one I had in my trunk tool box. VJ is a an excellent bike fitter and was able to help me resolve a cleat, knee pain issue a few years ago by changing my Q factor. The family and I spent several hours here on a late Saturday afternoon, and the entire time was with Tyler. We felt like he shot us straight the whole time, a mixture of patience and passion that made us trust him right away. He never tried to up-sell us or make unrelated recommendations. This was a huge difference from the three other bike shops we worked with. As far as the show itself, it's located in a historic old mill building, which was built in 1846, and is full of it's own unique character. They mainly carry Raliegh and Scott road bikes, but they have a large selection of mountain, cruiser, and hybrid bicycles as well. They also offer rentals (see photos for rates). The actual shop where they build and repair is a sight to behold, and worth the visit to take a look at. My wife spoke to the owner, Jeff, very briefly, and found him to be soft spoken and kind. Though young, Tyler knew his stuff and ultimately we decided on 2 previous season models that we got at a nice discount. Needed a chain for my ancient Haro BMX bike. I had to replace my front sproket back to an old style 43t and needed a new chain tondit the larger sproket... they had one! Had a basic $12 and a heavy duty $35 one which is what i bought cause i dont want it breaking. Good half link setup. Went on nice. Was in and out within 10min. Place is closed inside right now due to the ViRuS, and their sign says no bike rentals so that's a bummer for some people! But talking with the guy he did say they have bike service booked far out which makes me happy to know they are still doing okay in these time of days. I like to shop local shops but I don't live close to any. I called main St to make sure they had the part I needed, which they did. It is almost 20 minutes away from my house so I called ahead because I was going to be arriving 1 or 2 minutes around when they close. When I arrived I knocked on the door for 5 minutes before someone came a told me they were closed. I said that's why I called ahead because I was going to be there right at 6pm when they close. He said you will have to come back tomorrow. I will never be coming back, or ever put my money towards a shop that can't help a costumer out who called ahead to make sure they could stick around an extra minute after closing. I already knew what I wanted to buy and they had already confirmed that they had it and when I called ahead I told them I am not browsing I just needed the one part! The kids who told me to come back was not polite and could have told me before when I called and before I drove 20 minutes that they wouldn't take any customers right at 6pm. I originally came here because they were one of only two shops within 90 minutes that could service my suspension fork. I'm really happy that I did. I dropped off my bike with a pretty unique fork to service and a few other issues to address and within a week they had it all wrapped up, found a few other issues and addressed them without charge, and charged me less than half what the other shop quoted me. On the sales side, I asked about finding a bike that could address a pretty unique issue for me and the owner went above and beyond to find me answers from two companies. Main Street is 30 minutes from me and I literally drive past 4 other shops to get here but I feel that they're well worth it. I went to get my bike tire repaired today and happened to find this via local search. This place is AWESOME! It's in this old building. When you go in it feels like an ol time bike shop. Total steam punk vibe...they also have those blue bikes there for rental. Great service. I got advice and my tire was changed like in 5 minutes. Very friendly people. I've had a difficult time finding a repair shop that actually FIXES my Detroit bike. The bike was purchased in Libertyville at a now defunct bike shop. They made several attempts to fix an issue with the chain slipping to no avail. Finally gave up when a pedal fell off and dropped it at Main Street. They located and installed a new pedal and did a tune up. Haven't had a problem with since! read more

Love, love, love Main Street Bikes! Good service and support starts from the top. Jeff is a top-notch bike shop owner. He cares about the customer, the customer satisfaction and being a positive service in the Carpentersville community. The location is located right on the bike trail, with employees that go out of their way to make accommodations for customers. There are many days that one can drive by, and they will see a MSB employee in the parking lot making adjustments, assisting in a trial of a new bike, etc. Inside, the display floor is filled with most every type of bicycle (new, used and consignment), huge selection of accessories, helmets, shoes, water bottles, winter equipment, MSB clothing and ice cream. The service area is located right on the shop floor and if Jeff is too busy, one of the bike technicians are just as capable of helping the customer. My family and I have been long time customers, and Jeff has assisted my husband with all the odds-n-ends, special orders and expert help for over 10 years. I needed a bike to join some buddies on a ride while visiting from out of town for Thanksgiving weekend. Found this shop on yelp and rented a road bike for a day. Worked out great, and the bike was like new, in perfect condition. My ride was on Saturday morning, and they were cool with me taking it overnight Friday. I rode a Raleigh Revenio 1.0, $30 for the day. I wanted to use some borrowed clipless pedals, and they had no problem switching them out for me. Excellent service! We dropped off our bikes which havent been ridden in over six years. The service man gave each one a good look and detailed inspection. Now, in addition to a tune up, the bikes require som assembly after our international move from Europe. Still, this was of no problem - we were quoted a lesser price (than displaying on their white board) for tune up on both bikes and provided with our service slips. Based ion previous reviews, I know our bikes are in the best of hands. The shop additionally has a great feel to it. The service area is right there inside the shop behind the counter, next to register. Everything is transparent and you can watch as they service other bikes. A selection of accessories are also available, including locks, saddles and helmets. Staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. Absolutely recommended. read more

This is my go to not so local (for me) local bike shop. The new shop looks great so much more space than the old location and adjacent to the Fox River Trail. Jeff, the owner is a great guy, he will go out of his way to make certain you are taken care of. Great selection of CX bikes as owner is very active on the local cyclocross series as a racer and organizer, he holds a race every October in Carpenter Park just down the street from the shop. Located right next to the Fox River Bike Trail this full service bike shop has it all. They'll replace your tires, tubes, brakes, cables, true your wheels, install a new gear caset, and much more. Since the shop is located right on the Fox River Trail, a regular ride of mine, I pass it all the time, but it is not near my home, so I'm not a "regular". Last week I broke a link in my chain just after passing the shop, so I coasted back to see if they had anyone available for a quick fix. Jeff, the owner, was the only one working, and it was a beautiful day so he was very busy. Nevertheless, he was patient and thorough with the folks ahead of me, and then said that he would be happy to fix my chain while I waited--saving me having to call and get a ride to my car 21 miles up the trail. Fast, efficient and kind, and not (too) judgmental about me not being able to use the chain breaker tool. It's a great shop, with good rentals, and an owner committed to customer service! read more

When you first walk in to Main Street Bicycles you can see that the store supports biking enthusiasts. They have some amazing bikes. What you can't see on the surface is the wonderful small town bike shop customer service that permeates the shop. I brought in a used Trek bicycle that I had just bought for my son. It had some derailing issues that we weren't aware of when we purchased it on Facebook Marketplace. Dave and I spoke on the phone, and Tyler worked with my son and I in the store. We met Jeff later. Tyler, Dave and Jeff were very kind, gracious and knowledgeable and put my mind at ease. They took care of all the problems we saw (and a few more), and made the bicycle a wonderful and safe early birthday present for my son. I couldn't have been more pleased with the experience, the service, the reasonable pricing, and most of all, their commitment to the customer. I will be returning with my 25 year old Trek bike soon. We had some family visiting from out of town and needed an extra bicycle for an afternoon ride. Main Street Bicycles had a nice selection of rental bikes at an excellent rental rate ... $10/hr, $20 for three hours, $30 for the whole day. We rented a bike for a solid two hours and they only charged us for one. The bike worked great and their service was excellent too. They also have a nice selection of bikes for sale as well as a service dept. I do a great deal of riding and I will definitely keep Main Street Bicycles in mind when my bike needs service. read more

My family is now fan of Main Street Bicycles. My husband has an old Trek bike with problematic gear shifters and tires that need replacing. When we brought the bike in Main Street Tyler checked out the bike and gave us a quote. He said shifters were likely gummed up and just need cleaning. With tune-up, new tires, replace the old kickstand with new one, and replace saddle too, the price we paid is $100 less than another bike shop that gave us quote--other bike shop said new shifters are needed and their quote did not include replacing saddle. Do yourself a favor and go to Main Street for all your bike needs. Tyler is awesome and the guys there will treat you fair and square.
