Dad: I am looking to buy a bike at Target for $300. Me: Ok, let's go to a bike store first to compare. Dad: I don't know. I am not looking to spend a lot. I don't want to have to sell one of my children to get a decent bike. Me: HA HA HA! Not all of the bikes are super expensive. Besides, the quality of the bikes are much better and it will last you forever. I have a very munched used trek mountain bike that is over 20 years !! We head over to Village Peddler. I look around and I pick out a bike that I thought my dad might like. My dad gave a once look over. It was a nice looking bike. The owner allowed my Dad to test ride it in the parking lot. After an hour of talking to the owner, who was extremely helpful with explaining some of the extra features of the bike that would make the bike ride a more comfortable and fun experience. The bike had airless tires!! You never have to fill them up with air! Super convenient. Me helping the owner sell my dad : it comes with a bell. Owner: That is not a bell. That is an accident prevention system. .....It sounds better when you say it that way. A bell cost $2 dollars but an accident prevention system is worth at least $20. Wink wink. You don't have to sell on of your children for this feature. We laugh. We go to target and find the bike he was looking to purchase and said " I like the other bike better". We head back to Bike shop All in all, the bike cost $450 for a bigger, sleeker and lighter bike with extra features such as comfort seat and handles, airless tires and don't forget the accident prevention system!! Plus the owner threw in a free water bottle holder and water bottle. Great experience!! Went for a bike ride....My Dad is a happy customer!! read more

Bought my 2nd bike here which comes with free tune ups and adjustments. I ride a lot so it is a nice perk. They do take trade ins but don't expect too much. Probably better to sell it yourself on Facebook. They have a huge selection of new and used. They were able to our bikes right in and adjusted while we picked out a new bike for my son. They were very helpful. They also have a good selection of road bike accessories. Hopefully they will have more mtb accessories in the future read more

Nice! Small-looking store but they have a ton more bikes in the basement. Go shop in the fall and winter when business is slow and get some good deals on last year's models. Well, we just picked up our long-neglected bikes from a complete checkup (see their website for a 2-for-1 coupon!) and must say we're impressed. We took our bikes in late on Monday and they promised they'd probably be ready Thursday, and they were. The price they quoted was exactly what we were billed. Quite satisfied with the work done and prices, we added a few safety items on like a tire patch kit, new pump, red rear flashers for traffic coming up from behind, and a few pants straps to keep them from getting caught in the chains. It would seem that everyone here rides--they're not just techs and salespeople. Karrie was the person who took our bikes in and wrote up the estimates, and did some of the work--she was great, as were the other folks there. All in all, we're quite satisfied and would recommend them in an instant. read more

I had a good experience here as far as purchasing my bike. My salesperson was very attentive and patient, got me fitted perfectly to a new bike, and gave lots of good advice on how to get used to it. I agree with all the other commenters in this regard. Taking my bike back for a couple of adjustments was a bit different. My back brake was squealing and my front brake was not working correctly. I was also hearing some rattling in the chain. The tech I talked to said "The chain noise is probably user error. I can't fix it if you're putting the bike in gears you're not supposed to use." Without even letting me explain what gears I was using when hearing the noise, he abruptly took the bike back to start working. I also felt a bit embarrassed by the fact that the techs seemed to be poking fun at my bike while working on it. Something about the handle bars. I bought a bike with a "comfort" frame because I have back problems and don't want to be hunched over while I ride. It looks basically like a mountain bike but with a little bit different handlebars and thinner tires. I'm not sure if they were making fun of it because it's not a $1500 bike or what, but it's a little off putting, especially considering I bought it at THEIR store. I didn't buy this thing for the Tour De France or to go hardcore trail riding--I bought it because it's more fun than walking or doing the elliptical. Anyway, great store, lots of inventory, knowledgeable salespeople, and minor adjustments are free if you bought the bike there. I just didn't get the greatest attitude from the techs. read more

Outstanding,honest and helpful service. There are a lot of bike shops in the fox valley and this one is a little out of the way but it is by far the best store and experience in the valley. The staff is very knowledgable and they are really helpful. We have purchased bikes from just about every shop, Mill Race, Bycycle Heaven and others. This is a real bike shop in terms of being people how love cycling and treat cyclists fairly. They have been willing to make adjustments on my daughter's bike and my wife's bike which they know was bought at a different store. Fair prices, willing service and a practical approach that genuinely seeks to give you what you need without overselling or over charging. Let me just say the customer service is AMAZING ! We just bought 2 bikes and a rack and they made us feel like family. Not only did we by the bike rack, they even put on my car and then put the bike on it. Most places would say here you go and let you spend hours in the lot trying to figure out how things work. We live very close by and we will ALWAYS be going there for all out bike repairs and any questions we may have. The prices are very reasonable and I am a person that does not mind spending a little extra cash for great service. If you are in need of a bike (new or used) or need some repair work or accessories. I can't say enough about the experience we had at this store shopping for my two-year-old son's first bike. There was a young man named Eric that assisted us and was so unbelievably wonderful I'll never forget this adventure :) We spent almost two hours building a bike that our son felt comfortable on and that was safe for him. We got the helmet, and bells and whistles for the bike there also. After we built the bike and seemed like it was adjusted to fit our son the sweet employee took our little guy outside to test drive his new wheels and even got on an adult bike to show him how to ride. He spent another 30 minutes just showing him how to pedal to foster his confidence and make us feel more comfortable spending the money knowing that our son was truly interested and ready. read more

I've had work done on bikes here a couple times. The first time I did I was helped by an older gray-haired fellow who was quiet but helpful and the work was done well. But when I walked in, I wasn't greeted or anything, but rather had to wait til they were done laughing and chatting it up with what I assume were friends. But the second time I used them recently is the reason for the 2 stars. My receipt says I was helped by Greg. "Helped" is a very generous description. This younger, bearded fellow COMPLETELY made me (who was the only customer in the store for the first few minutes) feel like a total inconvenience. He, quite passive-aggressively agreed to work on my bike while I waited... which is what he said he'd do. When he was done he seemed upset for having to had to help me... then I clearly said "thank you" twice while he was ringing me up. He responded to neither. For me, the customer service here is horrible. If you want to be treated like an inconvenience or an imbecile, come here. read more

We had a terrific experience buying a 20" bike for our 6 year old grandson here We first shopped online and visited the major big box stores. We finally realized our best bet was to go to Village Peddler after speaking with the owner on the phone. And are we glad we did. I personally have owned multiple Trek bikes and I was not going to "cheap out" for my grandson! He was able to try out several bikes (which you can't do on line or at a big box store). He picked a Giant model which he now absolutely loves to ride. Jeff and his staff were great about making a few adjustments on the bike. A real plus is the remarkable after purchase service they provide and they will take it in for a trade in down the road. I took my bike here yesterday because my chain fell off when I was riding on the Fox River Trail and got lodged in between the cogs and the frame so tight that I couldn't get it freed. On a busy Saturday, the mechanic took my bike right into the service area and started working on freeing the chain. He did this in a very short time but also checked out a few other things to make sure my bike was in safe riding condition. When he had said it was OK, I went back into the service area and mentioned that I had been having issues with noises on the big ring and was wondering if he could look at it. He not only took a look at AND fixed the problem, but he also brought me back into the service area to explain to me what was wrong and what he had done to fix it. I was so glad he went out of his way to do this -- as male mechanics don't often do for female customers -- so I could be sure that the problem was fixed. My dad also bought his bike from this shop about a year ago and has had nothing but positive things to say about both the sales and service team. I look forward to using this shop again in the future and will be recommending it to other people who live in the area. Thanks again! read more

I'm a disabled Veteran. I put money down on a bike at the village pedaler in South Elgin. They said I could put a bike on Layaway. They said I could pay for the bike however I wanted and that it didn't have to be once a month. I moved closer to my VA hospital up North in March 2020. I called to make a payment after I moved. One guy said he couldn't find my name and hung up. I called back and spoke to someone else who put me through to the alleged owner. The alleged owner said they were trying to get ahold of me but couldn't. I told them no one ever called me and I had the same number. He asked me for my new address and said he would make me an offer I couldn't refuse. Another lie because I received a check in the mail today from village pedaler for $181.69, for my bike I had on layaway. Don't trust them. Someone is riding around on my bike. Wow. I served my country so you could be free and it turns out you are full of GREED. I'm glad I cursed at you over the phone for selling my bike before we hung up. read more

The customer service at this place is the best. I first started using them about 9 tears ago when I lived 45 minutes away; now I live in Northbrook, which is over 1 hour away, and I still like them as much as my 1st visit. These people are knowledgeable, honest, and very helpful along with being competitively priced. I am sure that I pass a number of bicycle shops on the way to this store, but I know that Village Pedaler's owner, Jeff, and his group will make sure of my satisfaction. Jeff does not know me other that to say "hi" and make sure I was taken care of, but that is all I care about. My wife's son bought a bike for her last year from another store (it was a birthday gift ) and the store's mode was to rush her into buying something; their service felt like a rush to take care of you so you would leave them alone. Not a good feeling that they were concerned with your business. I am not looking for hand holding, I just want to ask a few good questions after I do my research and get some intelligent answers. After looking and talking with 5 different bike shops this was the first one that really listened to what I was looking for, explained different features of each bike clearly so I could easily understand them, and felt very comfortable going slightly above what my budget was as feel I truly got the best bike for me, no regrets. Rode my bicycle to have a front end alignment issue diagnosed. Two of the mechanics looked over my bicycle and were befuddled that there was anything wrong. The wheel was straight, but I had to point out that the wheel wasn't centered in the fork crown and the bicycle wasn't tracking straight which caused a shimmy. The older mechanic who came from the back office took off the front wheel, put it in a truing stand, and spent 30 seconds dishing my wheel off to one side. After tightening the wheel back up in the skewer, he chuckled and said, "it looks like that made it worse". Then, they sent me out and said to see if that makes a difference. The brakes were grabbing on the front, so I immediately went back in the store and had them adjust the brakes so I could ride my bicycle home. I readjusted the brakes some more when I got home, and noticed that my front wheel is no longer true. The front brake grabs in two locations and my wheel quickly spins down. I'm frustrated that now I have to go to another bicycle shop and have my wheel professionally trued and properly dished. They weren't able to diagnose my alignment issue. They said it might be the fork that is out of alignment, but it was too much trouble for them to put in in a fork jig to see if that was the cause. read more

The owner told me that all of the 2013 bikes had pink tags. I was interested in one of them and so I went home and did my research. The bike was a 2011. I emailed and confronted him about it. He wrote back and told me they had some old bikes in the basement that they dusted off and put out and that I could be right that it is a 2011. If you want honesty, this may not be the place to buy a bike. Do your research before you buy a bike at this place. read more

I can't speak highly enough of my experiences here. It's the epitome of how a small business should be... The people are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and make it clear that they're not out to sell you anything; they just want you to love riding your bike. After speaking (quite skeptically) with an associate upon my first visit, I'd learned that when shopping for bikes on my own, I had been looking at bikes that were the wrong size for me. He showed me the correct sized bike and explained to me how it was better for my body and would enhance my overall enjoyment by reducing strain. Needless to say, I was quickly converted. They have since offered free and fast repairs on the bike I purchased from them. The owner even delivered my bike when I didn't have a vehicle to drive it home in and then, once at my house, helped me adjust the seat on my spin bike to properly fit me, even though I didn't even buy the bike from him. Talk about going above and beyond! These are the kinds of people that are doing small business right, and I feel good about giving them my business. read more
