A post holiday meet up with my bestie brought us to the Main Street Cafe tonight. The menu and website state they have the best burgers on Long Island "as voted by readers and Newsday." I just had one of the worst meals I have EVER eaten. And that is not an exaggeration. I am literally sickened by what appeared on my plate. I wish I had taken a pic and I regret not doing so. I work hard for my money and wasting $20 on a gross and nasty meal angers me to no end. I will try to find the words to describe the "Irish Burger" which I ordered medium. And here are the words: Raw Cold Dry Tasteless Cartilage-filled Raw onions and pepper on top of this abomination with mustard on the side. I asked the male waiter to reheat it. I have lived in Northport for almost 3 years and have never stopped in here before. Big mistake on my part! The food was GREAT! I got the buffalo chicken salad which was recommended by the waitress, my friend got the turkey burger, and my other friend got the cheese/apple board and the spring rolls. We ended up eating everything! The service was friendly and efficient. The location is a bit small, with mostly 2 top seating but they do have a few 4 top seats. If this is the best burger on Long Island - we need to tawk - there must be some really awful burgers out there... I ordered their signature Main Street Burger - medium. I got a greasy undercooked - as in less than rare and bright pink in the middle - crumbling patty with some odd tasing slimy mushrooms and oily onions haphazardly thrown on it. Nobody came back to check on us. I did my best, but the burger truly turned my stomach. I felt like I was going to be sick for a couple hours afterwards. When they finally came back to clear our plates and asked how everything was, I told them and showed them. I got a cursory, "Sorry"... That's it. No adjustment. No manager. We paid via credit card and left a cash tip which I have a picture of, they decided to ADD an additional tip to my credit card to make the total tip 50% of the bill. Very nice cafe to great bar food and beyond . There is a gleeful vibe here with a community of all ages . The food was great. The burgers have been voted as some of the best in Long Island . It's been 14 years since we were last here and the place is as good as before. Main St burger was delicious, especially with great steak fries. The Pasta Primavera was equally good, although it t could use a little more garlic (personal taste.). A great array of vegetables. Very cold beers and Pinot Grigio rounded things out. First time here for this Southie. Usually don't go to the North side of island as it tends to be a bit, well Uppity. That being said for this gem I will for sure be returning. First things first, cool looking restaurant inside! All the pictures all over the walls has you looking all over the place. It's a small restaurant but overall and nice and clean place. We sat near the window that was overlooking town. We ordered a small appetizer which was an option on their specials board. We ordered chicken potstickers which were very flavorful and crispy. Our main entrees were the Crabcake Sandwich with potato wedges and a side of tarter sauce. The other entree was the Chubby Chicken sandwich which had melted mozzarella, bacon strips on a roll that had a garlic aioli on it. The crab cake was tender, fell apart easily with a fork, buttery and tasted delicious! My boyfriend got the chicken sandwich and said it was one of the best sandwiches he's ever had. First time here and already I'm a big fan. I called the day before to make reservations but they explained that not only do they not take reservations but would clearly be in my best interest to be there before 5:30 on Saturday. I got there at 5:35 and understood why. It's especially busy on a beautiful evening and this was not only a beautiful evening but there was a show at the John Engeman theater later that evening. All this said... we were seated immediately. There are some high tables along the wall, smaller ones in the back and lots of people eating at the bar. There is a great cozy atmosphere about this place and clearly the "joint was jumping." I love the look and feel of this place. Cozy with plenty of fun art on the walls. Our server came right over to us, brought some menus and took a drink order. She gave us plenty of time to peruse this very extensive menu and make our choices. Appetizer: Crispy Calamari with a marinara dipping sauce. The calamari was terrific, crispy coating and very tender fish. Tasty and even more tasty after dipping in the perfectly seasoned mouth watering marinara sauce. This dish was perfect. Main dishes: Main Street Burger: 1/2 lb, with sautéed onions, mushrooms and American cheese on this light bun. I asked for it medium and I got medium... it was perfect. This big burger was easy to eat and tasted fresh. This is the way I like my burgers served. (see my pictures.). It came with a big slice of tomato and onion and without a doubt... the best potatoes I ever had. My wife had the pot roast (which all my fellow yelpers rave about) and it was great. A healthy sized portion of very tender pot roast and gravy served with a delicious potato pancake. Each bite of the PR made you want to have another bite, and so on and so on. The problem with a great meal like this and being first timers here is that we did not leave any room for one of their desserts. They had quite the extensive dessert menu too. This was a nice surprise. I'm vegan and the staff was very friendly and flexible. I had the pasta Primavera with some substitutes. My girlfriend has pasta with Broccoli rabe and sausage. Food was great and the atmosphere was filled with happy regulars. I wish they would add a beyond meat or veggie burger to the menu that was Vegan. I've heard their burgers are awesome. This past Thursday, after my two buddies and I filled our stomachs with glorious Sand City beer, we needed something to absorb a little of that alcohol. Located right across the street (on Main Street) is the Main Street Cafe (who would've thought!). Reviews looked promising so we headed on over. The innards completely emanate that small town Long Island feel with a low lit, wood finished bar pub and caricatures/old photos lining the walls. Seating is sparse, but our timing was perfect as we got one of the last four-person tables. The other table was squished in so close to ours that when people were seated halfway through our meal, it was like we turned into a table for seven. Not the best spatially, but ces't la vie. Being so close to this other table gave us some insight into a few dishes they ordered. French onion soup and fried calamari had me visually interested, though at that point we had already each ordered "famous" 1/2 pound burgers. Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and some cheddar placed on top for a little extra coin. Homemade pub fries on the side. The burger was decently-sized and had the quality of a pub style patty. It was good, but nothing necessarily stood out. The pub fries were thick cut potato wedges with the skin left on and made for a tasty starchy side. Price matched up accordingly and service was relatively smooth. Overall, Main Street Cafe is right there in the midst of Northport and works well for a post-drinking meal, especially when it's not too populated inside. Despite this, I can't say it's anything special. A true blue "A-Ok" three star (maybe 3.5) kind of location. The menu had a nice array so a return trip is possible, but it may not be my first choice the next time I'm in the area. read more

Went to Main Street Cafe this afternoon for lunch (a beautiful day to be by Northport Harbor) for one of their much ballyhooed burgers. I must say that the reputation as the best burger in town is well deserved. Both my brother and I had the Far Albert and the burgers were cooked to perfection (medium for him and medium rare for me). The burger had a fantastic charred taste on the outside. The steak fries and sweet potato fries were also superb. Finally, the waitress was attentive and very cheerful. My late parents used to frequent this place and often took my husband and I there for lunch. We returned the favor many, many times. The food was great, the service excellent and the staff treated my parents with dignity and, yes, love. My husband and I have continued coming here when in Northport and still find the food and service remarkable. Everytime I enter the place, I feel like my parents are with us. A few of the waitstaff who knew them still mention them fondly to us. Lunches are great at Main Street. The specials of the day never disappoint. The regular menu items are amazing, too. Best burgers on Long Island, that's for sure. Their seafood choices are always fresh and tasty. Have only been there twice for dinner, but each time was a pleasant experience. While there here are only few tables in the place -- the long and beautiful bar takes up most of the narrow bistro's room, when you are seated and your food comes, you forget the smallness of the cafe and focus only on your table partners and the wonderful tastes of the food. I grew up in East Northport and stopped here for lunch before our trip back to PA. Man, I miss downtown Northport. Service was very friendly and the menu had a bunch of selections. I had the grouper BLT and it was delicious. The wrap fell apart a bit, but it was made some place local and the meal itself was very enjoyable. Prices were a little on the higher side for what you get, but it's NY and downtown Northport, so not surprising.
