Had a wee accident returning from an event were i had kids making slime. I thought all the lids were on tighly, but surprise, surprise ... when I got home we found a gallon of clear Elmers glue had spilled all over the rear of my van and down into the seat that was closed and under the floor. I called several detailing shops in town and two never returned my calls and one couldnt see me for a week. Eric the guy I spoke to at Main said he didnt have an opening but he would squeeze me in for a spot clean. A total lifesaver. He was wsiting for me and so was the detailing guy...i could easily have walked back to work but they dropped me off and picked me up after the car was done. ( within just a few hours ) they really did a wonder job and the service was first rate and beyond. I won't need to wait till an emergency before getting my car detailed. read more

Whatever you do, please do not make the mistake of bringing your car to Main Street Motors. I had issues with the air suspension on my 2005 Mercedes E500 and spent $5500 with them in two increments over the course of a year on this issue. The second time I brought, the vehicle in ($1500 bill) in March, 2022, the vehicle was returned with cigarrette smell, the rear seat uninstalled and the manual missing from the glove box. After having the car back for a week, the dashboard indicator for suspension issues came back. After returning the car to Main Street, the car sat for 2+ weeks without me receiving a call to convey the status of the fix. After repeated calling and getting several different stories about how the light potentailly cam back on, I requested to pick the vehicle up and requested a refund of my $1500 as the problem was not resolved. At this point, Jay the owner, and I spoke outside where he blamed me for buying a Mercedes and not knowing about upkeep costs on the car. He then pulled two $100 bills out of his pocket and thrust them at me, telling me to get a diagnostic at a dealer and that I was not welcome as a customer going forward. Just called today (June 20th, 2022) asking for when I can expect my replacement manual they committed to ordering me and I got a story about how they are waiting on responses for junkyards they have contacted so they can purchase a used replacement manual. This is the WORST auto repair shop EVER in my life. They charged me 250 dollars just to inspect possible problems on check engine and battery issue. They quote me over 3,000 dollars to fix the car. They said the alternator is not working so I should not drive. I was considering to give up the car (which might be they hoped for) but just ordered AAA to tow the car home to have a second look. Guess what? The alternator was totally fine and the car is working in a good condition without any fix! The check engine turned out to be oxygen sensor issue, which is easy to fix. The battery issue was just that the connection was too loose. What a joke.. they are so dishonest. I will NOT recommend this place to anyone at all read more

About 4 years back my car broke down in the middle of the road and these guys towed it to their shop and let me park the car there free of charge until I figured out what to do with it. Since then anytime something starts going wrong with the car I'm driving now I take it to these guys and they (1) fix it in a very reasonable amount of time so I don't have to bother friends for rides or take an Uber to work multiple times a week and (2) always tell me everything that I could possibly fix and break it down into what I should have fixed and what I should wait on, which I really appreciate. Needed a new set of American made tires from a small local shop. Cost a little more, but wanted to give the business to an American tire company and keep my money local. They said it would take the whole morning to complete the job. That is good I said. Got my truck to them right on time at 8:30 p.m., but they did not tell me the tires were not in yet. It is an old truck (2003), but still runs well. Waited five and a half hours for a call. Nothing. Walked back to the shop where I was told the tires just arrived. Told me it would take an hour and a half more. They said they texted me about 3:00 p.m. (text did not arrive on my phone until 4:14 p.m.) that they had great trouble getting my wheels off and may need to keep my vehicle overnight. Good faith deposit of $100 up in smoke. Lesson learned. I will go to a franchise tire store next time. MSM will sell the new tires to someone else. Hope they give them a $100 off the price (on me). All they had to do is keep me in the loop and I would have changed my plans and acknowledged the difficulty they had getting the wheels off and been grateful for their efforts. I took my 2012 Jeep Wrangler in for full checkup. It had never had any work done except for regular oil changes. They gave my Jeep a complete check up, with recommendations for brake work, fluid changes in cooling, transfer case and power steering. Also needed a new thermostat, (the cause of the check engine light). I also wanted new tires. They did a super job on everything! Explained everything, gave an accurate estimate on time and cost. I've been taking my cars to Main St. Motors for 13 years now. The thing I like best about them is how they know my financial situation, and tell me flat out what NEEDS to be fixed for safety, what SHOULD be fixed to not leave me stranded on the side of the road, and what CAN be fixed to avoid more costly repairs in the future. Bottom line -- they save me money. They do their best to get my car back to me as soon as possible (I've only waited overnight twice in 13 years), and they have a shuttle service for when I need to get across town while my car is in the shop. I do wish they'd bring back the lifetime oil change, which I utilized on my last two cars, but no such luck with my two newer cars. read more

Definitely overpriced. Likely dishonest! We took our car down to them when it was having a hard time starting. The mechanic called and said the fuel pump needed to be replaced and gave me a price quote of $1,000. Don't ask how or why, but I agreed to this price. Afterward, I called pep boys: $340 for parts and labor. I then called two dealers. They gave me quotes of about $500 for parts and labor. I immediately called the mechanic back, and asked him why his quote for the part ($540) was more than the entire cost that the dealer would do it for. He explained that the dealer's quote was for a fuel pump and I needed a fuel pump assembly. I called one of the dealers right back and asked them; they said there is no difference and the fuel pump assembly would cost me $240 for the part. So at this point, Main Street Motors is just incredibly expensive in terms of both labor and parts. (The Ford Dealers were cheaper both in terms of parts and labor.) When I called them back, Main Street Motors told me they might have made a mistake and they would call me back. They called back 5 minutes later and apologized. They wrote down the wrong part price and yes, the part only costs $240. When I asked about why their labor is more expensive than the Ford dealer, I was brusquely told that I agreed to that price and I should be grateful that they are knocking $300 off their mistaken part price. When I picked up the car and asked them about what happened, they told me that the Ford dealer is not supposed to give part prices over the phone, and that Main Street was graciously taking a loss on the part price. He said nothing like this to me over the phone, and did not explain what the mistake was. Regardless, the dealer was willing to do the exact job ("fuel pump assembly") for half the price. read more

Main street motors charges a diagnostic fee. However, they do not waive this fee when they fix your car. In addition, they are extremely rude. The guy has some sort of attitude problem. He repeatedly ignored what I said, and did not apologize of give me any credit when I was right and he was wrong. I had an oil leak, like I said. It wouldn't have been a bad price if the diagnostic fee was waived when they serviced the vehicle like every other shop under the sun. There was more to it than just not listening to me. It almost seemed like the guy had an agenda. It was as if he had some explanation to push for everything, even when I knew the exact explanation to begin with. I have no problem with a shop not taking my word for something, but these people will insult and ignore you while they do it. In the end, I would avoid this place, even if it were a good deal. Just dealing with the rude people at this shop will make your bad day worse. I have better than average knowledge of auto repairs. I'll admit that this makes a difference when discussing needed repairs and pricing out repairs. That being said, a trusted car repair shop is at the top of every car owner's list and Main Street Motors is a shop that has earned my trust over the past many years. Our family has been taking our Japanese-made cars to Main Street Motors since the 1990s. The customer service is as good as the local dealerships, including providing a lift to customers who need a ride to work or home. We have had a variety of repairs done on our cars including oil changes, brake pad replacements, manual transmission repairs, complete brake jobs (including rotors and pads), leaking fluid repair, electrical mysteries solved and fluids flushed and replaced. The shop owner and employees treat my teenaged son (whom I've sent to ask about repairs) as honestly and fairly as they treat me. Taking your car to the mechanic is much like visiting the doctor. Sometimes, problems are hard to diagnose without a detailed examination. Doctors charge for diagnostic examinations and so does Main Street Motors. Doctors don't "roll in" the cost of a diagnostic examination with the cost of any necessary procedure. While I think Main Street Motors could roll in a portion of their diagnostic fee into the cost of a repair, the truth is that auto repair customers need to be savvy shoppers. I always ask Main Street Motors' staff how much a repair might cost in parts and labor and then call around to 2-3 other shops to compare rates. Main Street Motors has been more than willing to match rates with other shops and I'm happy to give Main Street my business. Only once in the years we've been going there has a mechanical problem been misdiagnosed. I wish I could say the same thing about my primary care doctor, whom I've been consulting for about the same amount of time. Once, a mechanic neglected to reconnect the emergency foot brake cable on our manual transmission car after a brake job. That mechanic doesn't work at Main Street Motors anymore. Over the years, Main Street has had people answering the phone who have been dismissive and sarcastic. So has my doctor's office. I've complained about all of them. The current Main Street Motors office staff is exceedingly polite and accommodating. Repairs are done as quickly as possible, and if there is ever a need for an adjustment, we've found that the owner of the shop stands behind the work done and will gladly make sure a problem with a repair is corrected (see foot brake problem above). This is a locally-owned small business that has helped us care for and maintain our last four cars from beginning to end. They're honest mechanics whom I don't hesitate to recommend, and I'm not an easy car repair consumer to win over. read more

I honestly wanted to love these guys. The first time they found a problem on the van that we though twas taken care of at another mechanic, so we were suspicious if there was anything wrong. But they called our old mechanic and verified the problem and really did fix it right. And then we went in for some routine maintenance, and that is when our experiences went downhill. The first oil change and tire rotation they found all sorts of problems, and when we got a second opinion the other mechanic and tire store said they were overestimating teh problems. The second oil change we had to remind htem that their own package called for a tire rotation after we realized teh tires were not rotated. They protested but rotated the tires. The third time, they not only didnt rotate the tires, even though their own promotional materials said they would but they stole my pile of change our of my car! In this visit they found a slew of critical problems I needed to take care of. When they called me, I decided to walk down. When I showed up, the guy was agitated that I showed up unannounced and had to "revise" my quote. I suspect he didnt want me verifying some of the problems with another mechanic, as some of the items he mentioned to me were not included on the quote. I am not sure what is the culprit for the decline in service, but somethings up, and it smells very fishy. read more

Free Wi-Fi in the waiting room!!! Maybe I don't get my oil changed enough, but I was tickled to learn that Main Street had free wi-fi (decent speeds too). Guys here really did a nice job. Quick and caught a nail in my tire and a burned out tail-light. They fixed both at no extra charge. Oil change was down within an hr or so. I think it came out to be around $30, which is more than I'm accustomed to paying for an oil change, but the convenience of it made it well worth the price. read more

I was traveling through town and had a major problem with my car. They didn't have time to see me that afternoon. That's fine, I understand that, but the person I spoke to there was, well, a complete asshole to me. It was really weird. I asked if they had any time to check things over, and he went out of his way to be a real asshole- condescending, pointed speech, rude.... He could have just said "I'm sorry, we're swamped. We don't have time." Instead this guy just goes off on me for asking. It was like a Saturday night live skit. If being rude wasn't bad enough, he referred me to the mechanic across the street. That shop was horrible (barely had any tools even) and I can't imagine that he didn't know that already when he referred me. They managed to accidentally shut off my ABS system, which required a trip to a Toyota dealer. Nice. Anyway, I just happened to be back in town today and was driving by Main St. on my way through town, a year later, and I'm still bitter about it, LOL. I give them two stars because maybe they do great work, but wow that guy is an asshole. read more

I can't speak to the posts about the auto maintenance but I had my car detailed at this place and they did an incredible job. My Jeep is about 7 years old and I had been driving it all west out summer and it was feeling ragged. I got the exterior and interior detail. It was an all day affair, dropped off at 8 and picked up late afternoon. So worth it. They even cleaned the machinery under the hood. My car feels like new. Look on their website for deals on detailing packages. I happened to find a deal that was around $40 cheaper than the regular rate. read more

I can't believe some of the negative reviews I have read here. The folks at Main Street Motors are as honest as they get, and the work they do is top quality. They are friendly and don't do anything if it doesn't need to be done. There have been several times when I have asked them to look at this or look at that, and if it doesn't need to be replaced they will tell me that. They don't even charge me for the labor to check into it if it doesn't need to be replaced. I have taken my car here for YEARS. The prices are comparable to any other shop in Ann Arbor - and WAY lower than the dealership. Believe me, I have checked into dealer pricing for every type of service I have ever had done. Not only is the staff so friendly & their shuttle service so convenient & the price very reasonable for the result, but they went above & beyond. I tried a gas station but they didn't have air so I pulled I here. I asked how much it would cost me and how long it would take for them to check and fill my tires they smiled and said "just a smile won't take long at all".and they weren't kidding I was on my way within five minutes when I offered them money they just said "no thanks, have a good day". I think they're very unethical when it comes to charging you for stuff you don't need. They try to take advantage of students, because they think your parents are paying for everything. I needed to get my battery replaced because it was getting old, but they made me get an inspection and charged me $100 for diagnostics, $100 for testing the battery, and $400 for a 1.5 yr warranty battery. I know it was ridiculous because I've had my battery replaced before for a 5 yr battery and it was $300 for everything, including labor. But I needed my car so I agreed to it. During that $100 inspection they said everything else was fine, but only 2 months later my car wouldn't start again. This time they charged me $60 for diagnostics and then said my starter was the issue and that would cost $600. I don't know if my car is even worth that much at this point, and I also don't want to spend over $1000 for a battery related issue. They act like they're doing you a favor, but they're really not. You should go somewhere else, because in the end, you'll end up paying so much more than you would otherwise. Oh, and the woman Kristin mentioned they could sell your used car for you, how convenient. She was bragging about how they sold someone's Acura for $400 above asking price. Except it costs $250 for detailing from them, and $500 commission, so in the end, you don't really make anything. Just beware of getting your car fixed from them, and from buying from them, because they will rip you off on all accounts. read more

Brian in the front of the shop is friendly and honest, and Bryan in the garage is knowledgeable and trustworthy. They have provided me with several safety inspections for my company's vehicles. I took advantage of an early release from work the other week and threw a hail mary to get my signal light checked / replaced. I knew without an appointment and some time on my hands it likely wouldn't wasn't going to happen that day especially because the shop was closing in under 20 min. However, these guys not only took a look at my light they tag teamed the operation and knocked it out in about 10 minutes. I'm not saying this is a miracle spot for walk in vehicle fixes but if you'd liked to be treated fairly and friendly I'd recommend paying this shop a visit. Main Street Motors is without a doubt one of my favorite auto shops on Ann Arbor. I spilled milk in my trunk and coffee in my left back seat foot area. I didn't need a full detailing as my car otherwise was really clean. I asked if they would do a partial cleaning job, and of course they are always willing to work with me as needed. They quoted me a price, and it was super reasonable. One more thing worth mentioning regarding their service on this issue. I had originally made an appointment for first thing in the morning. I had forgotten and therefore missed it. They called about 20 minutes into when I should have been there. We made another appointment within a week, and they basically made time for me as they were really booked up to 2 weeks at that point. Then to let you know how customer service related they are, they called me the night before to ensure that I would remember my appointment the second time. Also any of my multiple previous visits with them, they have always been kind, respectful, and have always worked to make the deal mutually beneficial. I highly, highly recommend them and cannot say enough about them. read more
