It took me about a month to write this review because I wanted to make sure there were no issues before posting. I cannot say enough good things about Convenience Auto Repair. After having numerous mechanics work on my car and still not fix the problems correctly, I was beginning to lose hope. Then I took my car to Convenience Auto Repair and spoke with Matt and Pat. They listened to my concerns, found the issues, took pictures of the issues and sent them to me before the work was done and they fixed my car properly. I had repairs done in the past, including replacing the slave cylinder clutch hydraulic line and the parking brake cable, but the problems still weren't completely resolved until Convenience Auto Repair worked on my car. Now my car is running like it's brand new! It's such a relief to finally have a car that drives the way it should. Matt and Pat were professional, knowledgeable, and honest throughout the entire process. We have used Convenience for many years for our Subarus and for our much beloved Mitsubishi Eclipse, a street model that has been a great car to own and drive. We almost sold the car because we received a diagnosis, a very high quote for a head gasket job. The bolts for the engine repair were quoted as $100. Per. Bolt. So that is $1000 JUST for the bolts! We took our car to Convenience because it died at an intersection. The first repair they completed was for changing out the crankshaft timing sensor, spark plugs and wires. When it still ran poorly after completion of that job, they diagnosed it needed a new head gasket, quoted to us as a $3400 job. We decided to get a second opinion at a shop that has a mechanic that knows Mitsubishis. It turns out because the the timing was improperly adjusted, the car was running poorly. We have a photo of the timing out of alignment that the second shop sent to us. It also turns out that the new camshaft timing sensor was an inferior aftermarket part, and the second shop replaced it with an OEM part, which costs LESS than the part they appeared to overcharge us for. The bolt was also stripped. MOST IMPORTANT = NO need for a head gasket job. The 2nd opinion shop we ended up using also mentioned that our car wasn't known for needing that type of work. It doesn't overheat. A shop that guarantees their work doesn't mean a whole lot if some of the profit they are making is using substandard instead of OEM parts that are overpriced to begin with. YES there are supply chain issues, but the shop we used got the parts needed, including OEM, no problem. I checked with DSM Tuners online (as this car is highly desired for mods) as well others, and the price for the bolts, certainly, was way out of line. Also, PLEASE ask for OEM parts ONLY for your car repair and do some due diligence if the part prices seem a bit high. We almost sold a car that we love, and no longer need to do so. I brought my car in for loud road noise. It turned out my front axles and bearing were fused together, having driven hundreds of miles without going in. The guys at Convenience Auto worked half the day to try and pry the fused piece loose, only to find that I needed a new axle. Due to delays in shipping, it was going to require a weekend to get the parts. I needed the car, and Joe knew that I was planning holiday activities with the kids. Without a car, it would ruin our plans. Instead, Joe had someone drive to Lansing to pick up the part for us! He went above and beyond to fix the car himself by end of day. This is the second time I got my Subaru 3.6R here for an entire annual maintenance. I am a very detailed guy, with specific requirement for my performance baby. This shop is convenient and staffed with talented mechanics. The attentiveness and service is good here, too! The starter on my car went out a couple months back. Convenience had a deal with a towing company that waived the towing fee if they worked on my car. I needed to get my car to a shop, so I figured, why not? It got towed up there and they got to work on my car within a day or two. I was very impressed by how communicative the staff here was. At every single stage, the mechanic called to update me with what they had found, what their estimate was for fixing each thing, asked straightforward what I wanted to work on, what I didn't. They never took action without my say-so. Got my starter together and it's worked like a dream, since. I also had them do an oil change while the car was there seeing as I was pretty close to needing one anyway. That being said, the labor cost was very high. One of the estimates they gave me for additional work that my car needed was such an upsell that I decided to wait and shop around. And I did find another shop nearby offering the exact same service for a few hundred dollars less. But I figure, the labor charge is how they offset the free towing, so I can't be upset about it. Business is business, and I'm glad theirs was there for me when I needed it. The other thing is, either they didn't actually do my oil change, or they didn't bother to update the computer in my car, so every time I start it I have to hit the reset button on my dash because it still reads as though I am due for an oil change. There is good service and mechanical competence here, but they don't have the most competitive prices around. I'm grateful for their help when I needed it, and you will get good work done here. I, however, will probably get future work done elsewhere. read more

Bottom line - avoid this garage, mechanics and owner at all cost. Repeat. AVOID AT ALL COST! I was overcharged for work (3k), misled and when I tried to get to the bottom of why they charged me 3k only to find that 10 days later, the car was now "undrivable" and that I needed to pay another 3k since "new mechanical issues have suddenly developed after since we took your 3k for work last week." I have an older Subaru Outback in very good condition, and told Joe and the mechanics that I wouldn't repair the car if it exceeded 3k to fix. Otherwise I would sell it. I was assured that they had gone over the car thoroughly and didn't see anything other than the exhaust that might need work in 12 months. Otherwise with the 3k in repairs, it was safe and good to go. 10 days later, a burning smell and overheating began. I took it back only to be told that I would need to spend another 3k in order for new work to fix the head gaskets which according to them "had never been replaced." I was told when I paid the first 3k for repairs that they had combed the car, and never mentioned anything about the head gaskets leaking. On top of that, they said the CV joint needed to be replaced as well. Why you ask did they not find these rather large and obvious issues the first time when I said 3k is my limit to fix the car? At best negligent, at worst deceptive? You be the judge. Here is the really suspect part of this now 6k+ "investment." The head gaskets HAD been replaced by Subaru in 2017. The mechanics at Convenience explicitly said the gaskets had NEVER been replaced. They also never mentioned 2 tests that cost less than $300.00 to identify if indeed the head gaskets are bad. Odd right? No verification offered, 3k in charges the first time, now 10 days later, "not their fault for missing the issue the first time" and now another 3k quote to even drive the car safely. I took my car to Subaru, Ann Arbor, asked the Service Manager to pull up my account. He verified that indeed the gaskets had been replaced along with the timing belt and water pump in 2017, and that I had driven 9k miles since they did the work. I now had all the receipts with the work detailed and took a look under the car. Joe at Dunning offered the compression test to verify if it indeed the gaskets needed replacing. More time, more doubting Convenience is competent. Do I drive the car and risk the transmission and engine failing, do I pour more money testing it, or do I call Convenience and ask them to explain what the hell is going on. I call Convenience Auto and ask what the hell is going on now that I have visited Dunning Subaru. As always I spoke to Joe, a friendly amiable guy who has led me thru this saga from the start. I was upset and had every right to be. I told him Subaru had replaced the gaskets contrary to what they had told me, and now they want another of 3k for a grand total of 6k to even get me back on the road according to them. And no offer for the 300 test before dropping 3k? Guess what. He hung up on me. He said he 'felt like he was being blamed, and never call Convenience again." 3 year, 30k warranty on their receipt? "Never call us again. We did the work. Good-bye." That is Convenience Auto taking my money all along. And hanging up on me when I demanded clarification. Sounds fishy? Wait there's more. The mechanic John who worked on my car, offered to buy my car for 1,200 bucks after I said there was no way I could afford another 3k for gasket work, and that I was taking a 3k loss already, with a car that is now underivable according to them. And -last but not least, because this saga just keeps going - they returned my car with a white paint scrape on the passenger door the second time they looked at it, most likely from a lift. Surprise. They won't honor or take responsibility for it. The saga continues for me- thankfully not you if you avoid this shop. I bought a new car and the Subaru is parked in my driveway. And I am out 3k and sharing this in the hope that you make a better choice when taking your car to be fixed. Anyone want to chime in if you happen to have any legal input or advice? I've tried a couple other car services since I've been in Ann Arbor (including places with very high reviews on Yelp and Google Reviews), but there was always something that left me feeling slightly dissatisfied. That was not the case with Convenience Auto Service! They did great work! I will be returning! I went to the Liberty Street shop for a regular inspection for an upcoming road trip. So what follows is a bunch of examples for why this place is no more than two stars for me. Forgive the exacerbated venting. After three service visits and numerous phone conversations, I'm sad to report that every experience has been negative. It's strange that a place called "convenience auto" makes me feel like nothing but an inconvenience every time I go there. I'm used to hanging around shop guys and I know the no-BS culture. I don't like to chit-chat either. But here my simple questions are met with more gruffness than a Russian mobster dishes out, followed by rude sighs. At this point you might be thinking that maybe I'm a difficult customer. You might be asking: "Are you one of them self-entitled folks that thinks the world revolves around them?" Or, "Are you one of those gear heads that try to prove that they know everything about cars?" or "Are you asking stupid questions with obvious answers?" Believe it or not, nope! And yet, I still leave feeling like I am the scum of the earth. The first time I asked to use their shuttle service they hemmed and hawed and made me feel guilty that I was taking a mechanic out of the shop. I just saw it offered on their website and assumed it was part of their daily business? I told them I was flexible and that it was no rush and still, they complained about how it was rush hour and I lived ALL THE WAY across town (mind you, it's a 10 minute drive - 15 in traffic). On top of that, some loose ends have been curiously left after they serviced my car and when I asked about it, they gave me a battery of irrational excuses and then mumbled something nasty under their breath. They offered to cut me a deal to fix what they broke. No thanks? If you broke it, please fix it for free and an apology would be great. And on top of THAT, phone conversations are always rushed and unclear with some prices thrown at me. It always sounds like I'm lost in a stack of paperwork. I don't think I'll be going back after all of this. I understand that they're busy and I understand bad days, but I haven't been able to catch them on a good day, let alone a neutral one. Their prices are great but the shop work is half-arsed and the service is unbearable. The good thing is that all this frustration has inspired me to be my own mechanic and I'm learning about cars while saving myself half the cost of parts costs, all of service costs, and ALL of the unpleasant attitude. This place received several positive reviews from fellow students in my program at UM, in particular for Subarus (the owner is a former long-time manager (I think?) of a Subaru dealership. I went here a couple of weeks ago when I noticed a plastic shield something-or-other was hanging down from the bottom of Kermie, my beloved Subaru Outback Sport. I asked my dad if I could just tie it back into place with zip ties and he said while that was a reasonable temporary solution, he would prefer if I got it professionally fixed. Well, guess what Convenience Auto did? Tied my car back together with zip ties! According to Lou (the father of one of my fellow students, it turned out) I must have driven over/backed up over a parking bump or similar...the bottom of my bumper and the bottom of my car in general was a bit ripped up. I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know when or how this happened, though after a winter of virtual "off roading" over glaciers (Ann Arbor roads SUCK in the winter) it could have been any time. I went in without an appointment (though they're recommended) and got quick, efficient, friendly service. Lou told me that ultimately, the bumper, etc. would probably need to be replaced, but that they could make it stable and safe--possibly for years--until something worse happened. Sounds good to me! Using an ingenious combination of pushpins and, basically, zip ties, (and doing a much more thorough and sturdy job than I would have done) they pulled and pushed and zipped everything back into place. Took less than half an hour, cost me a mere $29.95. Everything on the car is where it should be, and some mysterious rattly noises have basically stopped now that everything is held in place. Thanks Lou! I'll be back. **Also! They have a service desk email address and use it, which I appreciate a lot. Like many "kids" of my generation, I tend to do a lot of my business via email, and appreciated that Lou answered my question in a few hours and fixed my car later the same day.** read more

Crazy that I haven't reviewed this by now... I've had to take my car in here a few times and I feel that the service is very honest, very high quality and the price is right. I took my car here for a look-over right before I bought it and the guy said he'd buy the car for his daughter if I wasn't buying it already and he was right - only one easily fixable problem in the 2 years I've had it and it's a 13 year old car. One time, I couldn't start the car and they drove out to my house, sparing me the cost of towing it there--beyond nice of them. Turned out, I was using the old key and not the replacement that I had just gotten (DOH!). I was SUPER embarrassed, but they were so, so nice and didn't charge me a thing. This is my go-to auto shop. The staff are all incredibly friendly and honest (I've brought things here for a second opinion and felt I got a way straighter answer on what really needed fixing right away and what could wait), and I've almost never gotten any sort of upsell. These days, we don't need service as often, as we've switched from two used cars to one used ne to now -- one newer one, but we still try to do our main preventative maintenance and checkups through these guys. When friends ask for an auto shop, especially for Subarus, this is my first recommendation. (Though Steve Steeb and a few other shops are also well-trusted). An added bonus -- the Liberty Street location is an easy walk from the #12 bus line, which comes in handy if you're trying to get back downtown or home on the west side. They do also offer a courtesy shuttle, but for me the bus is easy enough I've only needed it once so far! I haven't been to the Jewett location (which is smart spot to open a second shop), but if they are sharing and hiring the same sort of staff, I would still trust them in a heartbeat! read more

I can't confirm that they were being intentionally misleading, but there wasn't a great deal of transparency in terms of what it would cost to fix the cruise control on my Subaru. And now, after paying them $346 for what turned out to be only a diagnosis, it's still not fixed. So, I would advise that customers be careful with these guys... read more

These guys are simply the best! Service both our Acura and Surbaru here - we've done everything from new tires, oil changes, new batteries etc., and have not been disappointed yet. They are fast, friendly and trustworthy. I typically need to wait in their waiting area while my oil is changed, and they have free wi-fi and water/coffee available, and they are always quick and never try to up-sell. Mention that you're a UofM employee and there is a small discount. Highly recommend! read more

My Honda Odyssey overheated and melted down, I'm from Grass Lake and was referred to this exceptional place of business for an opinion on repair. Very honest and quality work. They always take the time to explain what actually needs to be done vs what can wait. On my first visit, they diagnosed my steering noise as a faulty wheel bearing and quoted me $700 to order the part and repair it. They later found out that the bearing had been installed incorrectly by my previous mechanic, installed it properly and charged me only 50 bucks for the labor. Any regular auto shop could have easily installed the part and cashed in on the opportunity. The team at Convenience Auto are really knowledgeable and do all around good, honest work. read more

They charged $90 for a pre purchase safety inspection and it was well worth it, they found some helpful things and also just sat down to explain the overall condition of the car and their experience with the make and model in general. They'll also take that $90 off any of those repairs they identified during the inspection. Very courteous and kind, you really feel taken care of here.
