This is the third time I've used Lakewood auto and I have always been very happy with how well they communicate and how they fair they are with pricing. The First time I brought it in it was for a tuneup, and they were less than half the price of the dealership I appreciated that they inspected things and just didn't automatically replace fluids or parts that didn't need to be replaced. I just brought in my car because my air-conditioning stopped working. They did some diagnostics and recharged it. because it was only a diagnostic they did not charge me anything. I found my way to Pete's following a series of unfortunate events and some very useful Yelp reviews (thanks a lot for your input, everyone!). Not only was the service here friendly, professional, and timely, it was also affordable - exceptionally so; notably so. So, awhile back, a cold spell hits and my car doesn't start for work one morning. After trying to jump it, I realized that wasn't yielding much benefit so I swapped a new battery in. No better luck with starting - the car was getting power, but there was no attempt to turnover. Hoping against hope for a simple solution, I checked all the fuses under my hood and dash, both, but I'm not so lucky as that. They were all intact. The starter, then. Long story short, I had my car towed to another shop where the starter got fixed for a pretty penny. They notified me that my brakes and rotors needed replacing like yesterday, and gave me a quote for what it would cost. Seeing as I know the cost of brakes and rotors, I also knew the substantial rate they were going to charge for the labor. I decided there had to be a more reasonable option, so I say no thanks and picked up my car. I spent a few days contacting shops in the area to get price quotes for a brake job. Nobody even came close to Pete's. I'm talking about a price difference of several hundred dollars from shop to shop to shop within the same west Ann Arbor area for the same job on the same car. I dropped my car off and they called to let me know it was ready the next business day. I picked it up and was charged exactly what I was quoted for, no surprises or dollars more. It is a little tricky to find this place unless you're looking for it, but you'll be glad you did if you have need of automotive repair or maintenance in the area. DO NOT GO HERE! I REPEAT, DO NOT GO HERE! About two months ago my check engine light came on. A diagnostic reading showed a cylinder misfire. We proactively took our Jeep to Pete's to get it fixed before the problem got worse. Boy was that a MISTAKE. At first we had a pleasant experience until about thirty minutes after we got the car back (the first time) the check engine light came back on. I was told they gave me a bad part...that didn't fix the problem. So, I was then told I needed a valve job (which I was later told by a mechanic, that lives far away but I trust, that shops don't do valve jobs anymore) They did the valve job...or tried to. They effed it up so badly that they had to put in a whole new used engine! I took care of my car. I changed my oil regularly and made sure I was up to date on routine maintenance. Now I have to get some used engine. Sloppy! Poor, shabby work. These people DO NOT know what they are doing. I was given back my car FIVE times and told it was good to go. when I gave them my car it didn't smell, it didn't vibrate when it was idle, it didn't blow white smoke out the exhaust, it didn't make weird noises. It was a perfect little car that had the check engine light come on. I am embarrassed to be driving this car now but beyond that....I am fearful that this car is going blow while my son is in it. I have called Pete's three times to talk to them about these problems and every time I am blow off. I am told my car doesn't have these problems. I have pictures. I have video recordings. My car is effed up 100% due to Pete's Lakewood Auto. Right after I got my car back (the "final" time) I noticed white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I took it in, again, because I was afraid coolant was leaking into the engine. I was told there was NO LEAK. They topped off the coolant and sent me on my way. The next morning there was a puddle of green coolant all aver my driveway as well as more white smoke engulfing my car. My husband was able to find the leak, by casually looking under the car. He didn't even touch anything. Furthermore the coolant is the wrong type. It is in the owners manual to only use zerex coolant in a Jeep (which is orange) because the green coolant will cause damage including a bust water pump. Oh and did I fail to mention, for the original valve job, I was told I would get my car back three and a half weeks before I actually did. Any time I wanted to figure out what was going on with my car, I had to call. The only reason I found out I was getting a new engine was because I called. This saga has been going on since early March. Please people, I urge you. They do not know what they are doing. read more

Okay, I'll start with the bad first: they're not cheap. Labor runs $100 per hour. But don't let that turn you off! You get what you pay for, and with Jamie's Lakewood, that means excellent results. The Good: They not only fixed my brakes very quickly (one day turnaround), which now run in excellent condition, but just today I heard a strange sound coming from underneath my car. Turns out there was a heat barrier that was loose and hitting the exhaust, but on my specific make/model that barrier is not needed at all, it's just installed "because it's customary." They hoisted the car up, took a look, removed the damaged heat sink/barrier, and I was out the door in about 15 minutes--at no extra cost because of the brake fix about a week earlier. Additionally, all the attendants are exceptionally nice, particularly Az, who runs the front counter. Definitely check them out. read more

I just changed from Professional Automotive Technicians (P.A.T.) to Jamie's because the same thing keeps breaking on my car for the last three years. I wanted someone to get to the bottom of the problem. Everyone who works at Jamie's is super friendly and asked detailed questions about my car's history. They fixed three things (replaced the breaks, the power steering pulley and pump, and a belt) for less than P.A.T. was going to charge me for just the pulley. They called the same day to give me an estimate, and had it done the next day. They even dropped me off at work after I left my car with them. When I came in to pick the car up, Jamie's wife showed me all of the broken parts and made sure I had an understanding of why they needed to be replaced. She even stayed a bit later so that I could get the car after work. It turns out, what's making the squealing sound is still a mystery, but when I brought it back, they thoroughly inspected it and were completely earnest about finding the root of the problem when it gets colder and the sound worsens. read more

I just moved into town from Washington state and after having three months off from work where I had all kinds of time to fix anything that might go wrong with my Mini Cooper, the muffler strap and bracket decides to rust out at 6:00pm on a Friday before Memorial Day weekend and starting my new job on Tuesday. I swung by Lakewood Auto at 5:30 pm last Friday because the rear brake pads were shot on my vehicle. I pulled in and Don, the owner, and Jake, a mechanic, came out and asked what was wrong with my vehicle. They immediately started to identify the issue then gave me a ballpark for the repair on the spot. I told Don I needed the vehicle repaired as soon as possible as I use my vehicle for work. I'm new to Ann Arbor and brought my car in to have the guys at Jamie's to investigate a loud rattling noise I heard anytime I drove over the slightest bump. While I waited, they were able to figure out that the auto body shop where I had recently had my brake pads replaced had installed the rear break pads incorrectly. They quickly re-installed the pads (for a minimal labor charge) at and I was on my way within the hour. The staff was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and friendly! I had been going to Jamie's for a couple of years and had good results at reasonable prices. Then I brought in a Honda Insight for basic service. They didn't fasten a wheel cover properly, which flew off on the highway. They eventually replaced it but I was disappointed that they pushed back and asked me to cover half (which I didn't). The most recent time I brought the car in for a hybrid battery issue, they didn't return calls for two days or ask for authorization to work on it, replaced a battery for $129 without authorization, wracked up another $200+ in labor diagnostic charges only to ultimately tell me I should take it to the dealer, three days after I had it towed there. The service was hugely disappointing and unprofessional and I'm definitely going over to Fisher Honda in Ypsi. What start off well with Jamies ends on a sour note. read more

What a wonderful place. I had a 1988 car that sounded awful, as if one of the rods was bent--seriously expensive repair. Jamie diagnosed--with a stethoscope, yet--what turned out to be a much, much simpler problem and fixed it perfectly. The car now runs really well. I brought my 2013 Equinox in because it was shaking terribly and engine was making very loud sounds. They told me it was oxygen sensor, which they replaced for total of about $150. I had told them that the car shook when braking and was extraordinarily noisy. They said they couldn't feel the shaking and the noise was normal for Chevrolet cars. After picking up my car the check engine light came back on during the drive home, and it still shook A LOT. Ended up taking it to the dealership the next day -where it turned out it was the high pressure fuel pump that was the problem (and covered under power-train warranty). I am very disappointed they missed this in diagnosis and I wonder if the O2 sensor was even necessary. read more

About a week ago the power steering pump on my Crown Victoria started groaning badly due to a corroded feed line which suddenly started leaking. The repair shop I normally use had disappointed me with poor workmanship on previous visits so I was reluctant to take my car to them again. Somebody recommended Pete to me and I decided to give Lakewood Auto a shot. I'm thankful that I received that recommendation. Pete was not only able to repair the power steering leak quickly he also diagnosed and corrected a nagging performance issue I'd been experiencing. Even better was that the repairs were performed for significantly LESS than the original estimate!! I was so impressed I made an appointment to bring the car back for new shocks and tires (routine maintenance I'd been putting off) a few days later. While aligning the car Pete discovered a loose ball joint which was not included in the original scope of work. He replaced the ball joint for only a nominal additional cost. Previously known as Jamie's Lakewood Auto Service, and now owned by Pete. My mom had been taking her van to Jamie for years and was quite pleased with his services. During my recent visit here in Ann Arbor and while using my mom's van I encountered some engine trouble. Unfortunate timing as I really needed a vehicle the next day by 1:30pm. With Jamie no longer in the business we decided to give the new guy a chance. After a quick call to Pete, we were soon at his shop with her van. We expressed our concern about getting the job done quickly and he promptly diagnosed it and called us back with a quote. He said he could order the part for UPS delivery and hoped to get it in the earlier part of the next day. I made a reservation with a car rental company just in case. The following morning he called and said that he still had not received the replacement part, but as soon as it arrived it would only take him about an hour to install. He kept in touch with us and when the part arrived he let us know and sure enough we were able to pick up the van in time and cancel out the car rental reservation. He seemed to be a very knowledgable mechanic and the van is now running just fine. We were very grateful for all his efforts in expediting the repair and also keeping in touch with us on the timing as it all happened. I may mention also that the girl at the front counter was very pleasant. Our first experience with Pete and his new company was a good one. read more
