We hired Charles River Movers to move a piano because they assured me they were experienced moving pianos and had insurance in case of damage. Damage occurred, including a large crack in the piano fallboard, during the move resulting in over $600 worth of damage. The repair person said that type of damage is a result in incorrectly strapping the fallboard during the move. Charles Rivers Movers has not responded to my request for payment. read more

Charles River Movers were recommended by one of our dearest friends who owns an apartment building and encourages her tenants to use this company all the time. We were not disappointed! We had to shift our move date 5 times and they were so kind each time we called and pushed it out - again. They were doubly kind when 3 men showed up a week early and I had to remind them we were moving the following week. We elected to pack ourselves yet they offered blankets for artwork we were going to hand carry (we moved just 2 streets away). They were on time, wrapped and taped all our large furniture and carried it as if these were their own items. They were willing to set up furniture one way then switch it when we asked them to. In fact, one of the guys came up with the best ideas for placement. Everything arrived safe and sound. Update: Wow, since I posted the first review, CRM has really bumped up their score! The only problem is that if you check the 5-star ratings, you'll see that all of them are from accounts with almost no other reviews (most have only 2-3 reviews). That seems pretty fishy, doesn't it? Even more fishy are the favorable reviewers referencing, and in some cases, attacking me for my 2-star review. Doesn't it seem odd that supposedly impartial reviewers would be so defensive about a moving company? That kind of seems like the attitude one would expect from paid reviewers and friends of the business owner, doesn't it? Original review: I've dealt with Charles River Movers twice in the last three years, once for a move from Dorchester to Back Bay and again recently for a move that I scheduled with them, but then canceled due to an unsavory experience with the owner. Based on the first move alone, I would give them 3 stars. The price was a bit higher than average and I probably could have gotten a better deal with another company (for our most recent move CRM quoted about $1200, but we wound up spending only $800 with another company). The two movers I got were strong and worked fairly quickly. Although they were not very personable, they did a decent job wrapping and packing my belongings (only a couple items broke during transport), which is about all you can hope for from a traditional Boston-area moving company. However, this time around I would definitely give them only 1 star. The owner, Joe, was quite rude during a preliminary phone call, to the point that we actually decided to retain another moving company and cancel with CRM (who wants to start a move that way?). When I called to cancel and told Joe exactly why I was canceling, he eventually apologized and asked if we wanted to go ahead with the move. When I told him that we had already booked another company he rescinded his apology and said he was keeping our deposit (the move was four days away). He told me that I wasn't a customer, and that he didn't have to treat me like one. At that point, I considered our security to be a sunk cost and got off the phone. To Joe's credit, he did call back within 15 minutes and leave a message saying he that he had just booked another move and was returning the security deposit. Still, this experience left a bad taste in my mouth and for my next move I will definitely use a more customer-oriented company. read more

Terrible experience. To start the day they Showed up 3 hours late. Then there were 2 workers that do labor for hire (not employees), and they literally were threatening the two workers that are employees with physical violence (Charles River emplyees). Not only did I have to micromanage, the two labor for hire guys spent the entire time hiding out in the trucks, so the move took 2x as long @200/hr. Thank god we moved lots of small things in boxes because the cost here was much higher thab expected. They ruined lights on the way down the stairs (now fixed) but created scratch marks on the floors, and after talking to the owner it's clear he doesn't care. Also one of the work for hire guys had a broken shoulder...who shows up to move with a broken shoulder? I ended up moving more things than the two non employees. We opted to use these guys since there were decent reviews and I thought the less expensive options we avoided would allow us to not encounter issues like this. I would avoid Charles River Movers at all cost, and I'm happy to share pictures of our floors and walls if anyone would like to see. I start by saying Im a military brat who is now active duty for the past decade. I've been moving to new homes ever 1-4 years since I was six months old. I've seen my share of movers. The movers are currently in my home as I write this because I'll be impressed if my items make it in one piece. If you are the moving professionals and do this everyday, you should be thorough enough to not make that mistake. Good thing I have a few extra boxes. Then they are putting bottles of wine haphazardly in a bin with heavier items. They've asked me for a pen to mark boxes...umm my stuff is packed. You are the professionals you should have this UPDATE The worst part of this move was that I had to pay $200 per hour for the movers to it in traffic. I racked up $400 before the movers even got started. It took them 2 hours to get from Waltham to Andover. It took me 45 minutes to make the same drive. When they arrive they tell me they don't have packing materials...to pack my house. The company claimed they thought I said my stuff was already in boxes. I appreciate that they moved swiftly. They worked faster than any other company the military has hired to pack me. I appreciate that they were able to get me in with short notice. They're nice guys. Nothing was broken. I am moving out of my house in Quincy to The West Coast. A friend recommended Charles River Movers to me. Eric came out and he could not have been nicer. He looked over my load and we discussed what it would cost. They would send a dedicated truck with only my things and two movers and then they would drive back. This is a great option, but it was cheaper to go with a regular long distance mover and Eric was very candid with me. HOWEVER, later my mom decided that she wanted some of the furniture i wasn't taking with me. So I called Eric up and asked if he had a load going to Florida. He did, and it made much more sense to hire them than try to get a u-box or pod that you have to pack yourself. The movers just came to get mom's stuff and Troy and Angel could not have been nicer or more professional. They packed up the furniture like the professionals they are and even helped me tape up my boxes. I can't say enough good things about them. I've moved too many times and I've had a lot of experience with movers. These guys are among the very best. read more

Took them longer to unload the truck into a one bedroom than it took two guys to load from a four bedroom house. The movers were certainly not in any rush. Careful enough with our stuff. I used Charles River Movers in early Sept., 2019 to move my mother's stuff from one 2 BR apartment in Dedham to another 2 bedroom apartment in Needham. I dealt with Eric, and got quotes from two other moving companies. Charles River was the lowest estimate, and Eric made it clear what the hourly charges were, when charges began, that they charged at the end of every day of work, not per job. A team of three packed on one day, and another team of three arrived the second day for the move. Each day was about 5-6 hours of work. My mother has a lot of stuff, including much china and many antiques. It was all moved without a hitch. Nothing was broken, scratched or dented. Everything was packed carefully with plenty of padding. The guys were easy to deal with, polite and careful. The final cost was under the original estimate, and well below the low estimates of the competing movers. I couldn't be happier with how the move went. I used Charles River Movers today for a local move and I won't recommend this company. First of all, their price is expensive. They charged me $175/hour for 3 movers and a truck, not including package material fee. Also, the time is calculated from the point when the truck leaves the company to the point when the truck arrives at the company. So if the truck spends an hour on the way between your places and the company, you pay $175/hour for that! But I have agreed with the prices up front, so I should not complain if the service is good. The service is not that good either. Among the three movers they sent, two were actually good and met my expectation, but the third one seemed to have obesity. Trust me, I am old enough to know the difference between being strong and being obese. This third mover walks slower than normal people. And due to the hot weather, this third mover sweated so much that he had trouble climbing the stairs, not to mention help move. The whole moving process was slowed down due to him. I felt the owner the company should not have sent this guy on the field in first place. So in short, I felt I have paid premium price for a sub-prime moving service. read more

DON'T GO WITH THESE GUYS IF YOU VALUE YOUR FURNITURE! DON'T TAKE A CHANCE ON DAMAGE TO YOUR PRECIOUS WORKS OF ART!! They damaged my hutch cabinet by taping the blankets to the wood veneer. In transit, the tape came off, pulling the wood veneer off with it. This ruined the appearance of my hutch, my favorite piece of furniture. When i REPORTED THIS TO THE BOSS, jOE, HE TOLD ME "THAT'S TOUGH, BILL, BUT YOU CAN'T PROVE IT."!!!! And he laughed. I was flabbergasted! Charles River Movers are supposed to be a professional mover. They are not. They charged me $175 an hour for loading my rental truck. When the truck became overloaded on weight, they didn't say a thing - just kept loading. I told this to Joe, and he said I didn't have any recourse because I didn't use their truck. He refused to give me the name of their insurance company, and told me, laughingly, that I couldn't make a claim. He was so rude! Then they charged me another $3500 to ship my few belongings that they still had in storage. The reason it was so expensive, they told me was that they would load the stuff onto their truck, then drive it across their lot, unload it, then Atlas Van people would load it on to their truck and deliver it to me in Arizona. Thus, once again, providing them with deniability on any damage, and at the same time, jacking up the price. I shudder to think of the unrecoverable damage to my artworks when the shipment arrives here in Arizona! When I persisted, on the phone with Joe, for the name of their insurance company to file my claim, he told me he was going to hang up on me, and that ended the conversation. I have the testimony of the people who unloaded the furniture that the blankets had come undone and pointed out where the tape had pulled off the veneer. The remaining blankets were still attached to the furniture, and I took several photo's showing the damage and the original blankets. The proof is undeniable. The totally cavalier attitude of Charles River Movers leads me to believe that they have done this many times to many of their former customers. Additionally, when I issued a complaint with the New England BBB, I was finally called by CRM. tHEY SEEMED, NOW, READY TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE TO THE CABINET. But required several photographs of the cabinet. Then after a time, requested more photographs, which we provided. Then, the shipment from Boston arrived. More damage to more items, some items - irreplaceable. And now, after so much time, still no call, no repair, no action. read more

I used CRM on July 1 for a local move. I am a former military spouse and have moves numerous times, most were relocating between Asia and the states several times and let me tell you my 7 mile move was more stressful than any other move I've ever done. First I was told that the movers would arrive between 12-2:00 pm. I thought great I can get some things accomplished in the morning and be ready for them by 2pm. 2 o'clock roles around and no movers to be seen, I have it some time and decided to call to check in. Well what I got was a snappy response that the truck was at the north shore and that it would be here when it gets here. Ok. I just wanted an idea when to expect them. Let me also mention I only had 1 bedroom of furniture and boxes to move, they quoted me 2-3 hours total. So 3pm comes and goes and then 4 pm and finally 5pm and I get a call they are on their way. Great I am paying hourly and they are just leaving their location at 5:15, this is where I start paying for them to sit in traffic for an hour what would have taken them 15 minutes if they had come when they quoted me. They finally arrive and start moving boxes to the truck, now it's past 6:30. I had an armoire too large to go down the stairs and the basic response was "I don't know what you want us to do". Well I'm MOVING I can't leave it. The guy seemed completely annoyed that he had to dismantle a piece of my furniture to the point I kept apologizing! I'm sorry you have to to your job?! I was never told il be charged for the blankets to wrap up my furniture or the plastic for the mattress and box spring. I had the original bags they could have put them in, had I known I was being charged extra I would have told them to use my bags. They finally unloaded "all" of my items and it was much past 9:30pm. My armoire is sitting in a broken heap in the corner now because they lost/misplaced the screws and hardware to reassemble it. I realized after they left they never asked me to peek in the truck to assure that it was empty, they just left. I was missing a full length mirror and a box of kitchen items including a knife block/set I paid over $150 for plus a handheld mixer and other items in the box. I called over and over and had a hard time getting anyone to help. They finally located the mirror in the truck but couldn't find my box. So on top of the ridiculous cost for a shitty moving experience I have to spend at least $300 to replace lost items. Their response was they were willing to "give me a discount on my next move". Yeah right! I'd rather not thank you! As far as compensating my list items I was told I was basically SOL. Do yourself a favor and bribe buddies with a truck with a 6 pack and skip the "professional" movers at this company! read more

This is a review about why I did *not* use Charles River Movers. CRM was recommended by a friend who said he had a good experience a few years ago. I emailed CRM a spreadsheet of my stuff, filled out their quote request form, and waited ... Nothing. I called to follow up & was told I'd have a quote by the next day. Then: Nothing. I followed up by email - got an answer right back that I'd have a quote in "half an hour." Then: Nothing. I called to follow up & was told I'd have a quote "the next morning." Then: Nothing. Etc. It took these boneheads 6 days to get me a quote, after promising each day they'd get it to me "right away." Then, when I got the quote, WOW - $2,000 above other top-rated local movers. When I let the manager know that I wasn't happy with the poor responsiveness and exorbitant quote, he wrote me a nasty, defensive email. Way to go on customer service! I had seen Brian S's review and was concerned about CRM, but it was the weekend of September 1st, and I needed to secure a mover ASAP. I am very happy to say that the company that packed and moved my belongings bears no resemblance at all to what Brian S described. The two movers I got took great care in wrapping up my fragile items. They were very friendly and reassuring to me that everything would go okay. They packed the truck very efficiently and safely. I had a feeling unloading to my third floor Brookline apartment would be a nightmare for them... but they handled everything great and got all my belongings through the narrow staircase with very minimal bumps and bruises. Well... all my belongings except my box spring which was physically unable to make it through. But for that, they actually hoisted it up from the ground to my balcony! That one act alone saved me a hundred or so dollars in having to get a new split box spring. Oh, and the person I dealt with on the phone (the owner, I suppose?) was very friendly. No problems there. Between myself and my brother, we have moved with Charles River Movers 4 times. Three of those times were for me. One of the moves was transporting my things from CT to MA. Every time I spoke with the company, they were friendly and easy to work with. All of the movers I have had have been GREAT! They are friendly, prompt and professional. I have never had anything broken because they wrap everything so carefully. I appreciate the fact that they don't rush because I can see them taking the extra time to wrap all of my belongings carefully so they don't break in transit. I admit that I did not pack my things (especially kitchenware) carefully and I was pleasantly surprised that nothing broke during the move, despite my poor packing efforts. This is the second time I have used CRM to help me move my son. Any time I have called, I've reached an actual person, not a recording. Anyone that I have spoken to has been very personable and helpful. Scheduling the moves was quick and easy. On the appointed days, the men showed up on time and went to work quickly and efficiently. The first move was from a fourth floor walk up on a hot day. The guys did it all without complaint.(I complained and whined a lot, I was hot and miserable). The move went smoothly. The second move had a couple of stops, pick-ups and drop-offs. Again, all done seamlessly, by awesome guys. Everything arrived in the same condition that it was picked up in. On the second move, some things went to a storage unit. The guys took the time to pack the space so efficiently for us that we actually had some extra room. Very impressive. I was recommended to CRM by my usual Mover who is VERY dependable, and good, while a bit expensive, but worth every penny! Unfortunately, he was not available, so I booked CRM for a straight-forward move: a pick-up at my elderly aunt's house and move to my house. CRM told me they would call me to let me know when to leave work and head to my house for the delivery, but they did not. I received a call when the movers were at my house (30 minutes from my place of employment) and was told that I would be charged for the wait time. When I attempted to reason with someone on the phone - I'm sure I demanded to talk to a manager - he used expletives when telling me that this was my fault, I would pay them, and I better just hurry up and get there. Many hang-ups ensued as I continued to try to reason, and he just became more aggressive. He was rude, combative, and verbally abusive on the phone. The gentlemen who moved me were kind, and polite. They are not well served by their manager/boss who is single-handedly killing business. read more
