I never thought of Bar Harbor to be a place for BBQ but looking through Yelp, 99% of places to eat here were either lobster or BBQ. After a 5+ hour drive from Boston (and working the graveyard shift beforehand), my boyfriend and I decided that we were going to grab a bite to eat then drive up Cadillac to watch the sunset. We wanted to do as little physical activity as we possibly could on our first day here and we accomplished just that by starting it off at Mainely Meat BBQ and the attached brewery. My indecisive self decided on the sampler while my more decisive boyfriend got the wings and ribs. The meats were perfect- fall off the bone and tender without being mushy. The ribs were slightly dry and salty but nothing some sauce couldn't fix. I love that the platters come with all the sides instead of picking 1 or 2. The downside is that they don't have mac and cheese as an option. Unique to Maine, my boyfriend and I also got the blueberry soda, blueberry float, and blueberry sangria. Blueberry soda is overly sweet but pairs well with vanilla ice cream to make a float. The sangria was tangy and not pleasurable to drink. We didn't get any beers because we knew we'd be sampling all of them when we did the brewery tour. Altogether, a great place for food and company. read more

Mainely Meats was an amazing break from the typical bar food around Bar Harbor. Our group of 3 ordered the max plate and had plenty of leftovers. Everything was delicious but the ribs, beans and sauces were the highlights. We brought our dogs (who are a little barky and obnoxious) but the waitress was super friendly and helped seat us outside & away from other patrons. Hard to decide which was tastier -- the Bbq baked beans or all the meats on my sampler platter or the smoked chicken wings. The platter came with some really tasty ribs that fell off the bones, a chicken thigh, a generous heap of pulled pork and Bbq baked beans, coleslaw, jalapeño corn bread and potato salad. The beans were just divine. Unctuous is a good description. The pulled pork was moist but not greasy, add their homemade BBQ sauce and a little of their hot and you're in heaven. The coleslaw being a perfect way to cut through some of the richness. Hubs ordered the smoked chicken wings and those were just incredible. We were at Acadia National Park and talked to a family about what is good to eat around this area. They all said, Mainely Meat on Know Rd. They said, go to Know Rd, make sure its the Knox Rd location!! When we left the park, we made our way to Mainely Meat and we are grateful. We had what I would call a "meat platter" and grilled wings. The wings were absolutely amazing. All of BBQ was awesome but the wings, I have thought about them almost everyday since we have been home (Michigan). We talked to the owner and he was down to earth and a nice guy. Family ran place that needs you to visit. Get out of Bar Harbor for an hour or two and visit the Knox Rd location!!! We're from North Carolina, and couldn't pass up an opportunity to check out how Maine handles their meat... especially after guzzling some beers on the Atlantic Brewing tour, and finding this next door offering their pints at just $4.50! After ordering some beers, we asked the server what style bbq Maine does... he said it's all about the dry-rub. We decided to order a rack of ribs. They were fall-off-the-bone melty tender. But -- they did not have a smokey flavor, or noticeable rub. We also tested out the sauces... two options, one that was buffalo-y (tangy, spicy); and another that was thick and sweet. I didn't really care for either, but because the meat didn't have much flavor, thought it needed something. Service was friendly, and the place is quirky, with funny little details and equally funny tee-shirts for sale. Outdoor courtyard is a great spot to sip and savor if the weather is nice. read more

I must say this place is a little strange. It is in a strange temporary permanent structure. We were really going to the brewery to get some beer and planned to find a place for lunch. Well when we got to the brewery and found a bbq place right there it was a sign from God. I had some wonderful local blueberry beer. It's subtle not like you're drinking blueberry soda. Had the pulled pork sandwich. It comes with no sauce on it which is how I like it. Sauce is on the table and you can put on which ever you like and as much as you like. Came with a side. I got the potatoe salad. A bit heavy on the mustard. Lots is menu options to choose from. If you're not sure, try the sampler platter. If you want a change of pace from lobster you could do worse. read more

So here's my original review, which at the time, I left on Atlantic Brewing Co's Yelp page around 2008: This could quite possibly be the best BBQ I've ever had, hands down. The only other place I can truly compare this to is Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach, CA. But, due to the distance between the two, it's hard to try them side by side. So with that being said, I'm going to go out on a limb and say: BEST BBQ ON THE EAST COAST. There I said it. They smoke their BBQ like crazy here. "Falling off the bone" is not a figure of speech. It's the dead truth. The meat is ridiculously tender and juicy. Yet the outside is nicely blackened. Their sauces are excellent. They even give you a little selection of them on the table. It's not a fancy place. You're in a tent outside, eating with bugs and spiders. No matter, it's BBQ, it BELONGS outside. They are onsite with ABC, so they serve delicious cold beer with your BBQ. I tried a bit of everything. I can say their chicken and ribs were just absolute heaven. It's pretty rare to find a place this good. I wish I lived across the street from this. I'd go every night and enjoy some great cheap food and beers. It's a party in my mouth. I could continue to go on and on about how good the food is, but there's not much I can do besides say it's excellent and you won't be disappointed. Visited again in 2012 and it's just as good! I've lived in BBQ mecca: Texas and North Carolina. This place can compete with the best! My husband and I ordered the sampler plate and by far the ribs were the best of the bunch, but everything else was a very close second. Gave our 22-month-old one of the ribs (first time) and she cleaned the bone in 60 seconds flat. Like others have noted, once you've had your fill of seafood, you need to come here. It's a quick drive from downtown Bar Harbor and you can get a beer tasting next door while you're at it. The sausage was spicy and good, but had nothing to do with barbeque. The chicken was grilled and the ribs were spare ribs. The Atlantic Brewing porter was OK, but a bit sweet and without much depth. The standard IPA was just bitter and had no finesse. The service was incredibly speedy and attentive and the outdoor seating on a nice day can be enjoyable. So good we ate here twice during our week in Bar Harbor. Food was unbelievably delicious we had the pork quesadilla and wings to start. Highly recommend the quesadilla for any cheese lover. We loved the half rack of ribs (seemed to be meatier than the full rack we also ordered). Beans had a slight kick to them and coleslaw was great! This place has the craziest bbq I've had in a while. The pulled pork sandwich was served on Texas toast and it was perfectly crispy but soft and the side of coleslaw was awesome. The pork was amazing it was perfectly cooked juicy Smokey and tender. The chicken wings were bomb as well they were Smokey and delicious. We've been coming up to Acadia every October for about 8 years now, and we've eaten in a lot of places in the area. Mainely Meat is definitely some of the best food we've had on MDI. The menu is a bit limited, but that's a good thing - it lets them focus on a few items and do them really, really well. Ribs have a nice bark, but are melting and tender inside, the dry rub they use has a nice kick to it, but isn't overwhelming. Pulled pork is juicy, although it can seem a bit bland. Smoked chicken is also tender and juicy. And I love that they don't serve their meats pre-sauced (imo, usually done to cover up dry meat and/or a lack of flavor) - they have two sauces on the side, sweet and hot (hot is akin to buffalo sauce), and I usually like to mix the two. I would also lick it off the plate if I could. The only thing I'm less wild about is their potato salad. It's pretty flavorless. Every now and then you'll get a bit of pickle and find yourself wondering why they don't add more. Slaw, beans and cornbread are tasty though. Beans and bread have a bit of jalapeno in them - enough to make my spice-averse partner sweat, but not enough to make her stop eating. We've only ever done take-out, so I can't speak to the table service, but the folks who've taken our orders at the bar have always been friendly and efficient. read more

Coming here is a family tradition on every trip to Bar Harbor, and for good reason. Tucked in the back at Atlantic Brewing Company is this location of Mainely Meat. Service is friendly, helpful and more than accommodating, there's a good amount of space with large tables, and most importantly the food and drink is tasty. I started off with a fresh pint of beer. Being that this place is located at Atlantic Brewing Company, I mean fresh when I say it. I don't exactly remember what I got on my latest visit, but chances are good that it was a Blueberry Ale. As for food, I went with The Sampler - a heaping plate of pulled pork, chicken, ribs, sausage, and all of the sides. For the price, this is A LOT of food, and very good food at that. First, I will say I really liked the outdoor seating and ambiance. However, I came purely for the food. I have had barbecue from around 6 different states and only remember bad bbq one other time. My son and I both got the same thing. A standard pulled pork bbq sandwich on Texas Toast. I have never seen so much butter liquid on a sandwich is my life!! NOT a good thing. It literally was pooling on the plate in a puddle and covering my hands each time I tried to take a bite.I even tried placing 2 napkins under my sandwich and those were saturated within 30 seconds. My son's sandwich was the same mess. The pulled pork was virtually flavorless. Additionally, for a $10.75 sandwich I would like more than a thimble (literally) amount of bbq sauce in the standard condiment cup. A lot of people do like more bbq sauce. The sauce was good!! Being from South Carolina, we seem to know a thing or two about BBQ. In fact we can be down right snobby about it when we go to other places who say they have "BBQ". So, when I had some of the best BBQ I had put in my mouth in a long while in Bar Harbor, ME I was shocked! We sat outside and since there were 4, the server suggested we get The Max Plate. This thing showed and I thought, WOW! It had Pulled Pork, Ribs, Chicken, and Sausage, in massive amounts. Then it also had Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, and Beans, and cornbread. The amount on the platter not only fed us twice that day, but was DELICIOUS! They had a couple of sauces. One resembled a buffalo sauce, which i didnt care too much for. Not that it wasn't good, it just didn't fit. The other was a Chef's Red, that one was on point. The Pit master/chef must have migrated from the south, because this food was awesome!! Add the fact that this place shared a property with Atlantic Brewing Company and we had the full selection of all of their beers.
