Rhode Island food fights best of tacos

Wow! We had such an amazing take out experience with Maia! My best friend has a shell fish allergy and she made sure everything was safe for her. That was so beyond appreciated! She was also very personable and we loved chatting with her while waiting for our food, which was ready rather quickly! The chicken tacos were very yummy! We are so glad that we went! What a cute little spot!

First time trying Maiz. The Birria tacos and the bean and cheese burrito were good but the nachos were not.

I've driven by the Wakefield many times and finally stopped thanks to RI Food Fights! We were greeted by Maia who was friendly and informative. She was especially helpful with food allergies and intolerances. We took our tacos to go but they were great and full of flavor! I definitely will be back to dine in and try some more delicious food!

Yum! This place was great. We walked in and ordered, wait time was quite speedy (although we ate at an off peak time). I got the Birria burrito, and it was probably one of the best burritos I've ever had. I also got the street corn, and boy is that yummy too. It's hard to eat it to go, a lot of the seasoning falls off when they wrap it in tin foil, I wish they would send an extra packet of the seasoning to re season it. My son got the tinga burrito (with no beans). It looked good. They are definitely good sized burritos and I really liked the touch of grilling the burrito once it's put together. We also got an order of chips and guacamole. It was pretty good, a little too much tomato in it and I wish it had a little more cilantro in it. But still good stuff

Birria Burrito ($16). Meat is not quite shredded like you'd expect a braised and pulled beef to be.

Finally decided to give Maiz a shot with the wife and my dear friend, we'll call him Josh. I was pretty hungry, as I normally am so I went with the Birria Burrito ($16) and got a Tamale filled with Corn masa and pork carnitas ($4.50). First off, I was very full. I went in with an open mind as $16 for a burrito is a bit steep, but I felt a bit better about it after I heard that thing hit the table like a brick, it has some weight to it. The Tamale was no joke either, filling combo to get both of those. Now, the Burrito itself.. I was a little underwhelmed with it outside of sheer volume. For one, there wasn't really anything "Birria" about it. There was no consome to dip in, there were none of those magical juices running out of the burrito, there was a solid amount of melty cheese which was nice but outside of that, the flavors didn't blow me away. One thing stood out to me which was the beef. The beef was supposed to be braised, shredded Birria meat. It was honestly on the dry side and not shredded and dressed in any Birria juices. I know this because my wife got the Birria Burrito bowl and the meat was completely different. The tamale, I don't consider myself an expert in them having had them only a handful of times, but I enjoyed this one and would absolutely get it again. Filling, flavorful and had a slight acidity to it that was fantastic, I have to assume that was from the red pepper sauce. The staff was friendly, they were prompt, Josh actually received a burrito by mistake instead of a bowl and they fixed that in no time at all and they were apologetic. Overall we all enjoyed our meals, my wife and Josh felt the value wasn't quite there on the burrito bowls ($14.75), they did appear to be a lighter option that the burrito I got. I would definitely go back. Not sure I'd get the Birria Burrito again, though. Still on the search for Mexican that floors me, this scratches the itch and is definitely a step up from the typical counter-service options you have around.

This place is always five stars. From food to service you can't go wrong with Maiz. their shrimp tacos are to die for. I also tried horacha for the first time, it was fantastic. My husband tried the birria burrito, he was absolutely stuffed. He said the flavor was fantastic. I highly recommend if you go more than once to get the loyalty punchcard. They have a cute display on their wall of who has cashed them in. They are opening a second location in Providence, I can't wait to try that one as well.

The tacos are unbelievable! The fish tacos are some of the best I've had. The small pineapple pieces in the pico add just the right amount of sweetness. The tortilla really send it over the top!! Birria was perfect! Service was excellent and attentive. Good location and nice vibe. Highly recommend and will be coming back. You can taste the love in the food!

Amazing authentic Mexican food. I love the burritos, the tortillas taste homemade and they have the best cheese and the meats are always super fresh and flavorful. PSA: be careful if you bring these to the beach because the seagulls will take them right out of your hand

I'm a vegetarian and it can be hard for me to find well seasoned mexican food. This was amazing, so well seasoned. I got a salad bowl with beans, lettuce, pico, cojita, jalapenos and cabbage. I got the side of chips and guac (waaaayyy more guac and chips than I expected) and it's easy to say this is the best guac I've ever had. Thank you to the staff who were very kind and welcoming.

Tried a new place to have Mexican food . Food was good but expected a little more . The girl who took our order was really nice . Cute little place . Looks bigger on the inside .

Went back to Maiz Wayland Ave for dinner, busy night, full tables so we chose to go to the "standing" tables. Why standing tables, well it seems the stools they ordered went to some place out West! Talk about bad luck, regardless the standing table was absolutely fine with me. My dinner mate chose the burrito and I asked for the Nachos, mainly because I can't resist them. The waitstaff brought a coke to my company but forgot my bottled water and instead gave me a glass of ice water. The Burrito came out and looked wonderful, the word is it was very good and very filling. I waited several minutes and my order didn't show, the staff asked if I was waiting for something ( I was staring them down to make eye contact) I answered "my meal" she ran over asked what I ordered and ran to the kitchen, several minutes later my Nachos came with profuse apologies, the wait was worth it. Dare I say if not the best I have ever had it would be a very close second. The chips were fresh from the fryer and the toppings plentiful, the aioli was amazing. The staff brough my bill in the form of an electronic card reader, I handed her a $50, surly enough for our 2 items, but the bill was $62. I paid and asked for my receipt. The receipt was not for my food it wasn't mine, lots of items I didn't order. I called the staff over, showed her my receipt and explained what I ordered, she straightened it out and told us the meal was gratis, because of the "hiccups" we experienced. What a kind way to deal with people, I accepted her generosity, tipped her well and rolled myself out to my car. What a great place, yes there were some "hiccups" but I will go again and recommend the place to anyone who wants a great experience sampling Mexican fair.

Two Chicken Tinga Tacos and a Burria Taco - fresh salsa
    Terry D.

My daughter found this very small, tucked away gem in the heart of historic Wakefield. Almost food truck vibe, picnic bench seating in back with umbrellas to keep that hot July sun off you. Stopped in on Sunday after some time on the beach and this was the perfect late lunch meal. We had the Burria taco and the Chicken Tinga Tacos with a side of chips and salsa. Very authentic, arrived hot off the stove! Delicious! Both the chicken and beef were moist and tender. The salsa was very fresh and full of flavor. Each taco was a good size, one was plenty for me. Service was friendly and awesome! I almost hope too many people don't discover this place because it's going to be on my regular rotation. But I hope it does well....give it a try!

    Birria Burrito

C'mon Maiz. You used to make a solid burrito! Ay caramba. The Birria burrito I just got was arguably the worst Birria I have ever tasted. So dry and flavorless with the texture of jerky. Absolutely disgusting.

We drove up to the building and there really is nothing special about it, very few windows and some over grown trees in the parking lot. I didn't have high hopes. When entering into the restaurant the appearance of the bar and dining area was actually decent. Wood floors, wooden tables and a nice atmosphere at the bar. There was a bit of a cleaning supply/bar smell when you first walk in. Again I wasn't expecting much. The kids ordered a small Caesar salad and pasta with butter as their main dish. My husband and I both ordered the marinated grilled chicken with vegetables and potato. A fresh hot loaf of bread with butter was placed on the table right away. It was definitely out of the oven hot and delicious. The kids devoured most of it and we ordered a second one. The waitress, Grace was very attentive and ensured we had everything we needed for the table. I have to say the service was excellent as expressed on other reviews. Definitely a plus with kids! Our kids devoured the Caesar salad. It had fresh lettuce, shredded cheese, croutons and well mixed in dressing. They loved it! When our main dishes arrived, it looked promising, two pieces of nicely grilled chicken on the dish. When I tasted it, I was impressed! It was delicious! Perfectly grilled, not rubbery, and very tasty. The meal came with a side sauce of our liking. I chose the lemon butter on recommendation of the waitress. Perfectly paired! The kids pasta and butter was buccatini and was nice and hot, with a side of potato chip fries. Very good and very unique. They ate it all! Overall, ChopHouse Grille exceeded my expectations. While it isn't on the same level as a special occasion restaurant like the Coast Guard House, it offers solid food, excellent service, and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. We never felt out of place dining with our kids, and the staff made the experience easy and enjoyable. I would definitely return to try one of their steaks next time. If you're looking for a comfortable spot for a family dinner with consistently good food and service, I'd happily recommend giving it a try.
