Used to be our family's favorite Mexican restaurant in all of New England! We have even recommended it to friends......Sadly, new owners just took over SOOOOO sad! They served us salsa that tastes like they opened up a can of horrible enchilada sauce, added tomato paste and a few tomatoes NEVER have I ever tasted anything like it, nor would I ever like to again. That was NOT salsa...matter of fact, it was so gross, I pray they do not put it on any of their dishes either! YUCK! I'm not sure what kind of a fever dream these folks were having when they thought of this concoction and decided to call it salsa, but someone has to tell them they're so wrong for this and I guess that someone is me! They did something to the queso the prior queso was one of the biggest reasons we went there. Not anymore It's like they just took some White Velveeta and watered it down with milk with a splash of canned green chilies or whatever was floating around. The only thing that made that palatable was requesting pico de gallo and mixing it in with the "queso". My friend and Iand my children love going in there to share the flautas.... Yet another disappointment! They're chicken was so wet, it made the inside super soggy and then they added cheese inside. I don't know who the new owners are, but I don't even have to ask anyone if the new owners are white ‍ You just KNOW they are. They even removed all of the vibrant, festive, colorful decor hanging from the ceiling and all around and replaced it with drab, medieval star things.... I mean, this isn't Hispanic food! It's not even a close cry to being Tex-Mex, either. It's almost as if they're trying to put that place out of business on purpose. Hope they can get their act together! Cantina del Rio is always an easy choice for us when deciding where to grab dinner in the South County area. Whether we're dining in or ordering takeout, we consistently find something delicious with generous portions. Our most recent visit was enjoyable, even though it was a bit quiet inside. Not good last night (3/8/2025) Service score C - menus were physically dirty and in disrepair, wait staff ignored and only came when were getting up to leave, drinks and dinner came quickly but staff never came back to see how it was and if we wanted refills. Food was ok here. The chips were warm and the salsa was good for starters. After sitting at the bar and being ignored by the bartender, for 15 minutes, the guy seating people got me them. After about 20 minutes my order was taken and I finally got my drink, coke. Nothing that took long. The chicken chimichanga was good. I ate and wanted to leave. Things took too long. The bartender was having an "off" night I am sure. I know what was wrong, but this review is not the place. The bar was very industrial. Easy for them to clean. The restaurant part was quaint with a guacamole bar. I watched the server out there on the floor and he was working hard. So maybe sit in the restaurant for better service. read more

I recently dined at Catina Del Rio, looking forward to enjoying some of their much-talked-about dishes. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfying. The "Guacamole Fresco," which I was eager to try, turned out to be incredibly bland and tasteless, to the extent that I had to request extra lime in an attempt to add some flavor to it. The tacos, another staple of their menu, were equally disappointing and in desperate need of improvement. While the restaurant's decor attempts to capture a Mexican-style ambiance, it was only passable and did little to enhance the overall dining experience. Given the lackluster quality of the food, I cannot recommend Catina Del Rio. It has sadly made its way onto my "Do Not Go To" list. Great margaritas and helpful bartender. We got guacamole with our chips/salsa which was good not spicy enough but with jalapenos you never know, wish there was hot sauce on the bar. I wanted enchiladas, i prefer flour tortillas, he recommended a combo which included rice and refried beans, it was delicious. My husband had a burrito which was also good. Restaurant looked clean. We ordered several dishes and this was my experience: - The Arroz con Pollo was very good and moist. - The Sour cream chicken enchiladas were also very nicely done. - The steak fajitas were a bit tough (asked for medium rare but they were cooked well done). - The tacos were average. Ordered the bacon avocado chicken sandwich, the fish tacos and buffalo wings! Fish tacos were soooo dry, definitely need some type of sauce to compliment them! Also, a little overcooked as they were hard and too crunchy. The sandwich was pretty cooked and flavorful. The buffalo wings weren't spicy at all and a little overcooked. Could've gone with more sauce too. The salsa that came with the complimentary chips was surprisingly pleasurable! Service was pleasant. Nothing to complain about. Went for lunch today, 4 adults and 4 children. Everyone remarked how they enjoyed their menu choice. The presentation, flavor, and service were spot on. (I recommend their Margaritas). Terrible service. Granted it was Cinco De Mayo, of course it was busy but our server Chacho could not have been worse. Right off the bat he came to our table and complained about how busy he was. He wanted us to order everything immediately and was annoyed we only had our drink order ready. After our drinks came (which were wrong!) we waited at least 30 minutes to order, another server had to come over and ask if we were okay and get Chacho to come over. We finished our meals and then waited at LEAST another 30 minutes with empty glasses and dishes on the table with no silverware! I had to call him to come over and give us our check. I then told him that I was not happy with his service. I wouldn't even be writing this review if it weren't for his response. He refused to give me his name and when I said I was unhappy all he said was "me too", completely unapologetic. He proceeded to stand in front of our table waiting for us to put a card down. Not to mention it was auto gratuity! He did not deserve it. I am a server and I understand being under pressure but this was simply unacceptable. I will never come back here. read more

Absolutely appalled. We were unknowingly overcharged and went back to ask why. They gave us an item we did not ask for and they did not give us any sort of refund. Ok, so enough time has passed since we first tried this new restaurant and our neighbors said it was one of their favorites so we returned to see if this restaurant improved its food and service. We arrived at 7pm on a Wednesday in mid-August. There weren't as many people there as I expected in the summer season. The service was very prompt and friendly and the chips and salsa we received this time were much tastier than the last time. However, the food wasn't much better. I ordered the Del Rio burrito which was supposed to be filled with meat, beans, rice and cheese. Where was the cheese? How about the beans? It was a hamburger and rice filling and not very flavorful. My friend's fajita burrito was also mostly rice. $15/16 each for this??? It was then that I realized why this restaurant was much emptier than most others at this time of year. Visited the Wakefield location in July, when they offered outdoor seating and socially distanced indoor dining due to COVID-19. It was a cool night, so we opted for indoors and had the dining room pretty much to ourselves. The service was excellent, the menu exciting and the ambiance a sensory experience. They were generous with the obligatory chips & salsa, each of us having our own dish of amazing spicy goodness that was easily refilled by the beaker left at our table. Our meals were freshly prepared and the portions were big! I chose the Chile Rellenos while my grandson had a cheeseburger. Both were delicious and difficult to finish! At most Mexican places, arroz con pollo means chicken and rice topped with cheese and chopped small chopped vegetables. Here it means vegetables barely chopped with some chicken and rice, along with string cheese. Honestly was not very good. Service also didn't come around a lot, had to ask a few times for more water. Also, very expensive for the quality if we're being honest, especially compared to other Mexican joints like this. Marg was decent though, not very strong. read more

This was my second time coming to this restaurant on a Saturday night. The first time I visited was within the 1st two weeks they opened. They have come a long way in terms of service. We pulled in yesterday and the whole parking lot was full. We were expecting to have to wait +30 min. There were no other parties waiting to be seated, so we only waited 5 min! Chips and salsa were brought as we sat down. I will say their salsa is still terrible. Homemade salsa is something I look forward to at these places, theirs taste like canned tomato sauce with chunks of onion. Their chicken fajitas were good. I liked that they came with ample peppers(some places skimp on this). The food was your typical run of the mill American Mexican food. The desserts were good...probably the best part! Excellent experience here this evening! We were told about the outdoor dining at Cantina del Rio. It got chilly in Narragansett this evening and we went out for an early dinner. Outdoor dining these days is the only way we will go out to eat. This was phenomenal. Plenty of space, chilly but we had sweatshirts. Early dinner so we were practically alone for the first 30 minutes. All staff was extremely kind and followed all Covid rules. Hand sanitizer available in all pathways. And then the Food!!! Delicious everything. We chose to have quest and guacamole with our chips, so good and fresh. Guacamole was literally made minutes before it was served with crunchy chips and incredible queso. Fish tacos for me and chicken street tacos for my husband, both great with nice dipping sauces, a version of tarter sauce for my fish tacos was a great topping but we also used some queso on the tacos...really nice topping!
