Stopped by The Food Shack and had an overall decent experience. The entrance way is a little tight, but once you get inside there's actually a good amount of covered outdoor seating, which was nice. They also offer free water, and there's a one-stall bathroom in the back, which was convenient. We ordered bowls for all three meals and overall the food was pretty good. I personally liked the pork and chicken bowls the best -- both had good flavor and were enjoyable. The steak, however, wasn't my favorite. It was pretty tough and seemed overcooked. On the bright side, the plantains were cooked perfectly and had an excellent flavor. Service was fast, which we appreciated, and they had a solid drink selection. We tried the local sweet tea, which was a nice touch. While this visit was a bit hit or miss food-wise, there's enough potential that we'd probably come back and try the burritos or tacos next time.

After reviewing the menu at the counter my wife and I ordered tacos, a pair with grilled shrimp, one each BBQ chicken and baja fish. Each plate included an abundance of tallow fried taco chips and a piece of lime. The chicken taco included coleslaw, white sauce, cotija cheese plus pico de gallo and received a rating of very good. The baja fish taco with battered and fried cod with white sauce and sesame slaw came in a distant third while the shrimp tacos were just amazing. Each shrimp taco was filled with an abundance of grilled shrimp perfectly enhanced with sesame slaw, pickled red onion, tropical salsa and avocado aioli. Though we used our Newport County Dinner Club card to receive a 2 for 1 discount, we plan on returning and will be more than happy to pay full price.

We order Food Shack a couple time a month at work for lunch. The food is delicious though a little expensive. We usually get bowls or burritos and we have not been disappointed by anything we've ordered. Pick up is very quick and everything is well packaged / labeled.

Finally got around to trying The Food Shack after driving past it many times and I am glad I finally did. The place is small but even going during lunch time on a Saturday it was easy to find a spot to sit & eat. The person at the front was very friendly & helpful. I went with my normal go-to baja fish burrito & it was massive and highly filling. The quality of the ingredients is easy to notice. The side seasons chips was also appreciated. I am looking forward to returning & trying their tacos & some of their bbq options. They do not serve alcohol here, but do offer some yacht club soda, spindrifts & some other options. Big bonus points to the cool surf decor lining the walls.

This is a spot that has been on our radar but haven't been able to try. No line to order but they had only been open for about 15 minutes. I was torn with what to order and eventually chose the beef brisket burrito with a side of Mac and cheese. These burritos are STUFFED and not tiny. It was so good I couldn't stop even when I was getting full. Though it was so simple, the flavor was insane. Can't wait to come back to try more of the menu!

Mission NOT Mission of Food Shack

Agree don't go here if you are in a rush...love the sign that says ...mission to bring hospitality and positive influence...but not the hypocrisy - order taker would not substitute a few onions for the coleslaw which had allergen without $2 up-charge but no discount for not getting ingredients I paid for - Food is 4 but service is a zero and slow! when I pointed to sign I was told this conversation is OVER! Tijuana Burrito Grill will be my new go to!!!

Amazing food . Ordered pulled pork nachos (3/4ppl could eat these, HUGE plate) brisket and pulled pork. The butter that comes w the cornbread, is more of an icing then butter. Def too sweet for my liking BUT everything here was flavorful, delicious and reasonably priced. Give this place a go if you're looking for bbq

The tacos were fantastic: fish, chicken and beef were all fantastic. We ordered, sat outside in the 60° sunshine and our order was brought right to the table. Everyone loved their order. We fed the whole family with (2) tacos each, chips and drink for $48 Amazing!!!

The tacos are delicious, and the pitaya bowl is to die for! I have never been disappointed. The service is acceptable.

They have outdoor seating which was nice because it was a beautiful day. We got our food pretty fast. Service was great, very nice staff.

Not entirely sure what the deal is here but the Food Shack is primarily a taco place with a random Maui Surfer theme to it. But on Thursdays through Sundays they smoke a bunch of stuff and sell BBQ items under the name Rising Tides BBQ ... I don't know, everything has to be complicated. Had to knock off at least 1 star because they were out of Ribs by like 5pm. And they wouldn't offer any Combo plate options. Just 1 meat. They had pulled pork, pulled chicken, sliced brisket, chopped brisket, and St Louis style on the menu. Plates included cornbread, red cabbage slaw, and pickles, choice of either Mac and cheese or baked beans, and 1 sauce. I believe the sauces were regular, gold, or Alabama. Got the sliced Brisket cause what kind of dork are you to get Chopped? And it was incredible. Very soft, fat turned to butter, the smoke flavor was crazy powerful, rub had a zing to it. Only minor complaints were it may have been a little too greasy? Not by much at all, no regular person would complain. And the portion was just right for me but it wasn't anywhere near the amount I'm use to seeing on a plate. Not sure if there really is a defined "right" amount is. Mac and cheese was alright. Goopy gritty homemade sauce that had a good cheesy sweet flavor to it. Personally didn't like the small elbow pasta, it was more Al dente than that SUPERIOR BAKED SOFT texture. Anyone that says pasta is supposed to be firm just because some Italian said so a long time ago can go straight back to the caveman era and suck rocks. Beans are out of this world. These were phenomenal! At least 3 kinds of beans. Sweet onions, brisket, gravy style. Extremely good! Cornbread itself was decent. Most of what I've had before is much worse than this but I've had plenty of better corn breads. But the mapley cinnamon butter saved it. Slaw was very crunchy and not much real "slaw" power, just some red cabbage and vinegar sauce. Pickles were great, obviously homemade. Bread and butter flavor. Had to try the tacos. Baja Fish was pretty good, nothing fancy though. Really barely anything on it. BBQ chicken was decent too. Lot of good stuff on it. The corn tortillas saved them. Homemade tortilla chips with a nice Smokey sweet seasoning. It was nice eating the tacos over the chips so you'll have a good toppings all over the chips when you're done. Alabama White sauce was Perfect! Bit of a horseradishy taste but not overwhelming. Would suggest to mix up the sauce cup first cause all the oils and vinegar settles to the bottom.

Was craving some Hawaiian food so I typed in Hawaiian and this place showed up. Menu was a bit confusing. There's a little bit of what seems to be Hawaiian and tacos. Maybe it's a fusion. My image of garlic shrimp might be skewed a little after living in Hawaii for the last 1 years. I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a small garlic shrimp bowl. Can't mess it up right. As the very least garlic and butter flavor. I got something very different. Mine came with one plantain some unseasoned black beans and red onion garnish. They asked me what sauce I wanted, which was very strange, and I chose teriyaki. I might have to came back and try their kalua pork.

Tried the fish tacos and they were hot and tasty. The pulled pork tacos were greasy and barely warm. They don't even toast the tortillas.

Tonight was a complete disappointment. Chips were stale and chimichangas were tasteless. Decor was super cute and wait staff was wonderful, hence 2 stars and not 1. Asked our waitress if there had been a change and she said ownership changed within the last week. The new owner was there and she told him we had asked about the changes. His message via the waitress was he is using a different beef and is using more authentic Mexican seasoning (which I would say is "no seasoning"). We left there tonight knowing we would not return. She was nice enough to let me try them and I chose the Trevino which was very good and paired great with my food. The bread was nothing special but solid and the high quality olive oil made up for it. For my main I got the chicken milanese and it was divine. I loved the vinaigrette on top perfectly acidic and vinegary. It cut though the oil and heaviness of the breading which was perfectly salted by the way. The arugula bean salad was sooo good and created such a well balanced meal. The one thing I will say is I believe their fryer does fish and chicken bc my chicken had a slight ocean taste but since I like fish I was not bothered but non fish people beware!

Leaving the parking lot here is only second to KFC/Domino's, in terms of stupidity. The positives here are no crunchy rice, I can get a horchata or tamarind drink, a large selection of Jarritos soda, and the chip bags are always stuffed completely full. (I will have to say, though, I love the lime salt that Chipotle uses on their chips) I tend to order taco salads here, and the portion sizes are pretty darn good. I will, however, suggest getting either the green hot or medium hot sauce, mixed with the hot. The hot sauce has a decent amount of heat, but not much depth of flavor. My friend and I were discussing how the flavor and texture of the chips have changed for the worst over time - they use to be lighter and crispier, with lime and salt. The bag does bring a good amount, enough for two people to share. The lemonade drinks in the dispensers are good, and I like that they let you pour it yourself because we tried different combinations. The staff was kind and efficient.

The service was exceptional, and the menu boasts an impressive array of authentic Mexican dishes, including mole and pumpkin sauces--definitely not Tex-Mex. This is a much-needed addition to the local dining scene, as Rhode Island is not renowned for its Mexican or Tex-Mex options. Currently, Pero Solado is one of the few decent spots on the island, with a few more in the Providence and Central Falls area. Note that they do not have a liquor license, so you can enjoy Mexican sodas instead. Our meal consisted of guacamole and chips, carne asada, three tacos, and a side of beans. Everything was delicious; the beans were clearly homemade, and the tortillas were made from corn. The pricing was generally good, although the guacamole and chips at $10 seemed a bit steep.
