I love Mak & Kleiger, DDS! I'm always treated with outstanding customer service from the time I arrive until the time I depart. I'm so pleased with the staff and the dentists! Dr Mak is extremely sensitive to any anxiety's I'm feeling about cavities or worries I'm having about my dental health. I don't even want to ever consider moving out of the area since I would never want to change dentists! I recommend them to friends and family anytime teeth alignment or any dental concerns are brought up. Five stars!!! read more

I am too busy to schedule an appointment for a cleaning, show up to the appointment, only to be told to come back so they can collect another payment from my insurance company. Not happening. I've been with this office around 10 years before I decided I need a change because the trust is no longer there for me and I think they over charge for some services. Although I agree Dr.Mak, Dr.Kleiger, Dr.DeMesa and Dr.Lopez(Periodontist) are very competent doctors; they all worked on my teeth at one time or another but Dr.DeMesa was my 'main' dentist. My experience with this office has slowly deterioriated to a point where a change is necessary. Initially I signed up with this office when they were in a smaller location on the west side of Lake Ave and owned by another dentist instead of Dr.Mak & Kleiger. Back then they accepted DMO plan so almost everything was covered so no big deal. Then the dental office decided DMO doesn't pay them enough so they only accept PPO patients and I have to switch to a PPO plan to stay. Eversince the switch, I had to pay something out of pocket each visit and strangely enough after the switch, they recommended me to do a root canal, new crown, and tooth extraction all in a span of a year. Needless to say, that was a few thousand dollars out of my pocket too. Why couldn't they recommended those procedures when I was under the DMO plan?! I also found the front office staff snippy when questioned about the copay and not too helpful to assist with finding out what the insurance will or will not cover on some of the procedures beforehand. The breaking point for me was when I decided to go to an outside dentist for a tooth implant procedure instead of working with their in-house specialist. I needed an electronic copy of my recent x-ray which my insurance had already paid for, yet they charged me $35 which only took the lady a minute to lookup in their computer and sent it to me. Isn't that my x-ray that I already paid for? It seems like now that they are bigger and have more dentists/staffs, they are out to nickle and dime me on every service. If I can't trust them to give me the best service at the best value, what's the point of staying with them if I have to call other dental offices to see if I'm being overcharged every time!? *shrug* BTW, the specialist that I found for my dental implant was a top notch specialist who is world renowed and cost almost $500+ LESS than what Dr.Mak's office quoted me and even included full sedation while Dr.Mak's estimate doesn't even include full sedation! I have been a patient here for 13 years. I've only written two other Yelp reviews so that might give you an indication of how strongly feel about this review. I have had a good experience in the past with this dental office, but have decided that after my visit today I will never return. When I got there for my appointment today, the door was locked. It turns out they were having an all staff meeting. Which was totally fine. But when they opened the door a number of them were UNMASKED. I walked in and people were putting their masks back on and one, who seemed like the office manager, made no attempt to do so. It was a really uncomfortable way to start just about the last place anyone wants to go to during a pandemic--the dentist office! Before my exam, I expressed my concerns to my dentist saying I never complain but this makes me really uncomfortable. His response was that "MOST" of their staff was vaccinated and the lobby was the biggest place they could hold their meeting. I told them those were not reasons for their employees to be unmasked inside in a place where patients have no choice but to remove their masks. Millions of people are still waiting to get a vaccine! And what about your unvaccinated employees? Plus we know that vaccines aren't 100% and they bend closely over you into your open mouth!!! His cavalier attitude about it made me wonder what other safety risks are they taking. I'm not looking forward to finding a new dentist but I would rather do that than give them anymore money. read more

This used to be a nice family type dental office. It is now a commercialized money making machine that is poorly managed. If you want a Western Dental type atmosphere where you can get a tongue stud, then this office is for you. There's little to separate one office from another in terms of dental treatment, it's usually rather straight forward: filling here, crown there; unless there's extensive, complicated work to be done of course. What really makes a dental office worthwhile of your choice is the friendliness of the staff and the proficiency of their service. Unfortunately, this office excels in both incompetence and hostile attitude. After my initial appointment with Dr. Kleiger, he asked that my X-rays be sent over for his review - to provide a thorough treatment plan. It took about 2 weeks of contact (2 e-mails and 3 phone calls) to finally have a staff member give him the requested document that I had sent with my initial e-mail weeks earlier. I became annoyed. Finally getting my treatment plan, I noticed that the crown quoted was an all-ceramic crown, and was interested in the pricing of both PFM (porcelain-fused-to metal) and zirconia variants, just to consider my options. I requested this in several e-mails and 5 (!) phone calls. It took 2 weeks to finally get an answer, again. Only this time, I had to speak to the manager to get the proper pricing. When I expressed my frustration of how the staff would brush off my requests and never get back to me, she (the manager) exhibited the same hostile behavior. This is a toxic workplace. Dr. Kleiger seemed nice enough, but if you're interested in him (or any of the other dentists, for that matter) you have to go through that staff. I am happy to say that I'm no longer enrolled in their office, and have my sights set on better places. read more

There is a lot to like about this dental office. It is clean and the hygienists are all excellent. Dr. Mak and Kleiger and the others are great too. My issue is with billing and communication. I specifically tell the lady at the front desk (there are several) each time I reject all services that my dental coverage will not cover in full unless you tell me what the difference will be and why. The last two times they have "recommended" an exam. I say no I had one not too long ago and then they confirm "it's covered, you get two per year." It's only $22 and my gripe is not with the money. However to me you do not do business this way. If your representative tells me "it's covered," then it is covered. If it turns out my dental coverage rejects it for whatever reason (I don't go to any other dentist) then that is on you! Not your client/customer. I am considering changing offices. There are too many good dental offices to choose from. read more

Okay, so my insurance just changed and I need to find a new dentist. I've been combing through Yelp reviews, and all the dentist office ones seem so formulaic that it seems like the office staff is writing them, and not actual REAL patients. SO, for people in the same boat as me, i want you to know that this was my previous dentist office. And I loved it. I never waited more than 10 minutes to see a hygienist and when i did, she was the most gentle person who has ever had her hands inside of my mouth; so much so that i asked to book all future appointments with her and told all of the 8+ people that I convinced to switch to this office to request her y name: MICHELLE. Amazing. My dentist was always Dr. Mak and he was great too. No one here ever pushed deep cleanings or unnecessary cosmetic procedures on me, and everyone is super friendly. If you have Aetna dental, (what I used to have) you should totally switch to this place. And trust me about Michelle. read more

If you miss your appointment they will charge you $40. There are no exceptions! Not even a one-time waiver! After my first visit I was scheduled for the next routine cleaning appointment. That appointment was scheduled 6 months in advance! Naturally, I completely forgot about it. I was out of the country on vacation for the holidays, when I received a rude call from the front desk on the day of my appointment. I explained my situation and the woman rudely told me she had left me a message the day before and that I would be billed $40 for missing the appointment. That phone call ruined my holiday vacation. When I arrived I called and tried to schedule another appointment and asked for a one time fee waiver, given the circumstances, but the office manager was as rude and condensending as the woman who called me. yes.. I still rate them at 5 stars.. because Yelp doesn't have half stars. but if i could.. i'd knock them down half a star. I've been going here for YEARS and have only had really positive experiences here. I usually ALWAYS go to Dr. Kleiger. On occasion, I have seen some of the other dentists, like Dr. DeMesa and have had pleasant experiences, as well. BUT....I did have a one-time terrible experience yesterday. Due to work conflicts, I had to reschedule and Dr. Kleiger was not available. So I went to Dr. Li. I believe he is new(er)? I don't know what their protocol is, but every time I've been to the dentist, a hygienist cleans my teeth.. and then the dentist comes to check everything out. I've had some cavities filled by Dr. Kleiger before and everything, even filling cavities have been fairly painless and mild. Dr. Kleiger is awesome. But this time, Dr. Li did the whole thing.. the cleaning and exam. And that.. THAT was awful. I know cleanings can hurt, I know that blood can sometimes be drawn. BUT... Dr. Li was so callous with the tools. He pressed into my gums incredibly hard with the little mirror, causing bleeding, he on more than a few occasions poked right AT my gums .. not the gum line, drawing blood. In all my cleanings, I have never left with so much blood in my mouth! Even that night, while brushing my teeth, I still had significant bleeding. Though he asked me how I was doing and though I told him and though I kept flinching, he not once even *tried* to be somewhat gentler. Lesson learned.. loving Dr. Kleiger... never go to Dr. Li. read more

I was really happy we found this dental office, they really took care of my daughter we had been going to another dentist in Alhambra for a couple of years and i don't know what happened to them but they really changed when we went in to see them last week. Without having to badmouth our other dentist all i can say is thank God we were able to find these caring dentist! read more

The doctors are wonderful and friendly individuals. Unfortunately, you only see them for 2 minutes each visit. The vast majority of the time you spend with their hygienists or talking to their incompetent receptionists over the phone. Whenever you are late by 5-10 minutes, the hygienists give you so much grief, it was as if you had caused the collapse of civilization. However, they are routinely 15-25 minutes late themselves, and not so much as an apology, just straight to work. Their gruff demeanor continues to when they clean and give you crap about the state of your teeth, they are actually insulting and badgering. Have they heard of customer service? Most recently, my wife asked if my insurance covers nightguards. Without even checking, they said no. My wife assumed they knew what they were talking about and called/visited several places to get consultations/quotes until finally one wise receptionist stated that nightguards are often covered and checked for us. We are covered for 85% of the cost, much better than the $500+ Mak and Kleiger were planning to charge us directly without even so much as checking our insurance. When my wife asked for her dental records, they asked if we were planning to leave their office. Are they really that surprised? read more

This office deserves far less than one star. The doctors ARE good - but they KNOW what goes on with their front office. Good isn't good enough anymore. I need great! I was their patient for almost 10 years - but I couldn't take it any more. I thought it would be best for me to take my business else where. Where I could at least get decent customer service. They aren't the best dentist in town. Unfortunately I could relate to each and every negative post on Yelp because I was there for so long. Over charge - YES! They wanted $985 UPFRONT for a root canal. I got it done by a better dentist for $355. Me: "Thank you for cleaning my teeth. Can I see the doctor - I think I chipped a tooth?" Dental Hygienist: "I don't think so, you have to talk to the front office" As you can imagine - I never got to see the doctor - that day. Front office said I would have to make another appointment. He didn't have time to peek his head in. Left message for the doctor to call me back - he never got it. I went back two months later and told the the doctor what happened. He was mortified and apologized. I got 5 or 6 calls for a balance less than $30. They called me because they had a cancellation and did I want to come in tomorrow? I told the person on the phone - I'm driving right now - let me check my calendar and call you back. I called back in an hour to let her know I couldn't do it and I was told I was going to have to pay the cancellation fee because I was calling in less than 24 hours. I said, "You called me an hour ago to book it!" I'm not canceling an appointment that I made - I'm calling to let you know the appointment you booked for me 55 minutes ago isn't going to work for tomorrow. GEEZ! I did complain quietly and privately to the doctors (more than once). I did not make a scene - I wanted something to be done. Doctor apologized for front office staff's behavior. Said they had put them through customer service trainings in the past but obviously it wasn't working or time to do it again (WOW! I guess I wasn't the first one to complain). As you can see I have left their practice - don't plan to ever set foot in there again and hopefully this post will help some other family out there. read more

OMG!!! I stopped going to them last year in 2012 because I felt the exact same way as many posts here. I thought Dr. Mak's work and bedside manner were phenomenal and the other dentists were also fine but I was fed up with the office staff and just could not handle them anymore. I'm so relieved to see that I wasn't hypersensitive about the whole thing. The office staff is less then pleasant, they bicker amongst themselves and that Dayna office manager is way over the top. It is true that perhaps she feels like she needs to enforce or be vigilant about the payments but there is a professional way to handle it and she is definitely not. She's very condescending and even when the office billed me incorrectly and I advised of such rather than apologize, they just ignored my request to send an updated bill reflecting that the payment had been corrected. It is a shame because Dr. Mak is excellent and convenient but I don't understand what the deal is when you have so many complaints about your staff that you don't address the issue. I did see that it appears that Dayna and Dr. Mak have formed a corporation and perhaps that's why she's an equal partner in this but you will end up losing more business when your patients feel they are been nickel-dimed and not welcome. read more

Two years later and I still appreciate this dental office. I travel quite a ways to get to this office, the service is definitely the best. I have to give a shout out to Dr. De Mesa who is always kind, courteous and detailed with his exams. My kids actually love going to the dentist, and they occasionally need a little chat about doing a better job at brushing and flossing their teeth, which the dentist and hygienist did and it actually made a difference. My kids have actually been taking time to brush their teeth longer and have made sure I have a supply of dental floss for them. Very happy with their service! read more

They now have a downtown LA satellite office! Been a patient of Dr. K for sometime now. Totally agree with other reviewers about his great manner & care... And how friendly the assistants & office staff are. Now they have a satellite office on 6th & Grand. Great for those of us who work (or live) in the downtown area. Very nice office building & space. Super friendly staff. Also, my lil guy has been seeing Dr. Mak since he was 3 with no issues. They happen to also do well with kids. Definitely recommend both their Pasadena & LA offices. read more

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Kleiger for a few years now and his dedication and care has always been outstanding. Unfortunately, many of the staff members at the front desk are unpleasant to deal with and really not helpful when you need something as simple as a copy of last month's bill. The times that I had to deal with flex spending bills and receipts with the staff, have left me emotionally drained. It almost feels like you are bothering them by asking questions about their policies and practices that have never been explained to you. I have also had a few uncomfortable encounters with some of Dr. Kleiger's hygienists. They've made several mistakes that Dr. Kleiger had to fix. Nothing major but pretty inconvenient. With that being said, one of their staff members, Tsi (I apologize if I misspelled his name), deserves it all. He is the kindest, most empathetic and competent member in their team. Overall, if you want a great dentist, Dr. Kleiger is a great choice. Just be aware with the office culture. read more

I'd written off many of the other negative posts and completely regret it. Disrespectful and hard to work with, the office staff kills how awesome the lady who does the cleaning is and the dentist also seemed nice. The office called and texted multiple times leading up to an appointment but never mentioned that my insurance wouldn't cover the work and that it was considered cosmetic and not necessary. I'm not going back to a place that tries to push work without being clear on how needed it is and not be clear on what my insurance would be paying. I also had hoped it would be a place good with kids, but I would definitely not recommend that. read more

Really nice dentist & great hygienist, but you get nickel & dime to death! Even starts with parking! They charge you to park in their building & had me sitting there for 30 minutes after my appt time & I was early, they charge per min too. Lol. ANYTHING they can charge or bill for while they have you there, you better believe they will try to get it out of you! They wanted to X-ray after I told them I just want to get in & out with just my cleaning, they said you get 1 free per year. Doesn't matter when you don't need or want it! I've been a patient for over 5 years. Last night while I was flossing, my back tooth chipped off. I didn't experience any pain, but I knew I had to see the dentist ASAP. I called first thing in the morning, and I crossed my fingers hoping to get an appointment in same day. Not only were they able to accommodate my 'dental emergency', they saw my immediately when I arrived. Dr. Kleiger came within minutes after my X-Ray, and his assistant Jess were so pleasant and treated me with urgency. I got my tooth bonded within 45 minutes, and I was out of there in 50. Their entire operation is fantastic, and I'm just lucky to have such a great dentist! read more

Work done has been so far so good. Several cleanings done, a few fillings. Friendly professional staff. The reason why I give them 3 stars is because they try to sell you the expensive, not-covered by insurance stuff (enamel filling) vs ordinary, covered by insurance stuff (silver filling). They tell you why silver filling is bad for you and enamel filling is good for you, etc etc etc. I talked to all my dentist friends and they say it's because they can get more money from enamel. Great dentist office!! Everyone is wonderful here. I have been comeing here every 6 months for a few years now just for cleaning and exams but today I had work done. Dr. Kleiger was great, very gentle and careing. I had a cavity near an old silver filling. Today he took out the silver and replaced it with a new tooth colored filling. My old yucky looking tooth looks brand new and untouched. One more to do on the other side later this week. I am actually looking forward to it! :) read more

Dr. Kleiger is the best dentist I have ever had. I have been going to him for eight years now. He is gentile, honest, talented and has great bedside manner. I switched to him hoping that he would save a tooth that my old dentist insisted needed a root canal. He saved that tooth eight years ago and I have never had another problem with the tooth. Since then, I have been going to this office for my regular cleanings. There are several hygienists and they are all great. I just finished Invisalign and teeth whitening with Dr. Kleiger and everything has exceeded my expectations. The office is clean and modern. They offer valet and easy street parking. If you are looking for a dentist, I highly recommend Dr. Kleiger. read more

I have been getting my teeth maintained at Mak & Kleiger for many years. The dentists are very skilled and honest. Most of their hygienists are also very good at what they do. Once in a while you get a dud hygienist who is probably new. However, they let you pick your hygienist so I now don't get random hygienists. They are pretty good about not making you wait too long. Years back it was not uncommon to wait 30 minutes or a lot more, but that luckily is not the case anymore. I stuck to this office because I can trust them never to rip me off and or do unnecessary work. The only thing you have to worry about here is if you miss an appointment you will be paying a steep cash penalty. Yikes! In recent years they started giving multiple reminders so its pretty hard to forget an appointment. You literally get reminded like 6 times by phone, text, and e-mail as your appointment approaches. Anyway, my teeth have been in very good health since they started taking care of me. read more

The cleaning and treatment I received have been efficient and thorough, with no unexpected complications. Everything was explained thoroughly to me and I've been very happy with the results. I just got back from my first appt. with Dr. Yassamy, who's also part of the group, and I'm very happy. She was extremely kind, caring and thorough. I told her I have a very low pain threshold and she gave me two options for numbing. After I made my selection and she got to work, she asked me every so often how I was doing and even paused to reassuringly pat my hand! I had the quickest deep cleaning ever, with nominal discomfort [that's because I haven't been to the dentist in a while] but NO pain. Every time I go I can expect excellent attention from the front desk, they are always ready for me, even often when I get there early, they are ready for me early. The cleanings are thorough, and they always seem to be on top of the latest technology. The times I've needed fillings have been trouble-free with Dr. Mak. He is a master at what he does! Both dentists were very friendly and thoroughly explained the process before they started. I also took my mom in after having a bad experience at a different dentist office. She absolutely loved Dr. Kleiger - even after getting several fillings done. He was immensely patient, accommodating, and gentle while working with her due to her special needs. Both Dr. Mak and Dr. Kleiger are excellent dentists whose skills surpass those of most dentists I have seen. This is the best dental office ever. Dr Mak and dr Kleiger are both great dentists. All six members of my family go here including our four children. They don't try to rip you off like all the other dental offices. They never recommend any treatments that aren't nessesary. My kids were all scared of the dentist before we went here. Now they actually like the dentist. It was wonderful to find this place after our horrible experience at dental plus were they took us for over $6,000.
