MakeSpace is definitely worth every penny. Every person I've interacted with since using them has had stellar customer service. It is a true white glove experience. Recently I moved to Brooklyn from Manhattan being able to keep everything in storage until I found the right place was great and the level of service from the pick-up and delivery crews was amazing. Today, D Pryer, John Mahoney, Demetrio O brought my stuff from storage to my 2nd floor walk-up apartment. They were absolutely amazing! They were professional, kind and accommodating. I was afraid they weren't going to be able to get my couch and arm chair in the apartment. They worked together to strategize a plan on how to get it in the apartment, protecting the couch and the arm chair. I would highly recommend them again. read more

This is going to be a difficult review. Moving is already stressful on its own but this all happened during one of the most chaotic moments of my life (#1) and during a time where I was in midst of making some serious life altering transitions. They left me hanging on the day of my move. No warning ahead of time. No email to indicate that they were busy. They had already postponed my initial move by pushing it another day. By the next day, when they were over 3 hours late to our scheduled pickup time, I decided to call in to hear from the rep I had been communicating with and learned they were no longer coming. No rescheduling, but that they simply decided it was no longer worth honoring my appointment. I was in disbelief. The feeling of abandonment especially during at a crucial juncture (#2) is the reason they get a hard 1 star. The pandemic was a difficult time for everyone. Corporations, small businesses, city workers, and the rest of us citizens. During the middle of the worst time in NYC, particularly in Queens, there was enough chaos and uncertainties that people couldn't leave fast enough. I had known of MakeSpace for years and the concept (#3) was enough for me to give to consider giving them my business. I had called in and was told to make an account online where I'd be making all of my arrangements. No deposits were required and I was able to book a storage space as well a move date. The initial pickup was free, but the subsequent appointments would cost $59 each time. There were no bins due to the high demand, so I was sent a good number of packing bags that they claimed were "just as good" as a plastic bin with a lid. (#4) I personally loved the idea of being able to adjust my inventory for all of my items online. The only problem was that I could never actually adjust them and would be forced to email the support team or attempt to call in each time. Other fees included $15 for each mattress bag / covers and $15/50/$75 (small to large) for each item that needed to be tossed. By the time it was moving day, I had everything ready. My life was in boxes and a ton of MakeSpace bags. Our appointment was within the window of 8AM-11AM. By the time it was noon, I had called in and left a message. I didn't hear from anyone until just after 2pm when I learned they weren't coming at all. This wasn't good since I was flying out later that night. I asked if we could push for tomorrow instead and they told me they had no ability to make any appointment in the near future. I asked if there were any other services they'd recommend in a time crunch and my contact mentioned he'll send over a list. He assured me they wouldn't charge me $100 for any adjustments in my appointment that I was allowed to keep the bags (#5). In a stroke of luck, I I eventually found another mover to help me with the few hours that I had left in the day. It wasn't a pretty experience, but I was able salvage my last few moments as a NY resident by getting my things secured. Again, I realize the pandemic was a major culprit in things going wrong for everyone. However, I simply can't get past how poorly managed this all was from the confusing initial planning 6 weeks prior to the near zero communication at the very end. The added stress of finding another mover and leaving NYC was another endeavor and was exacerbated by their lack of service. Two weeks later, I received an email from their support staff that my appointment was "rescheduled" to 3 weeks into the next month. I have no words. __________ (#1) You guessed it, the pandemic. (#2) I had a flight in 6 hours. In another universe, other folks wouldn't be able to afford to stay because their leases were up or they couldn't afford to not move their things. I've been extremely disappointed in the offer that MakeSpace has made to fix our broken items -- just know they only offer $0.60 per pound so good luck for replacing any of your electronics or expensive goods. Okay--this is the third update, just to show how ridiculous the company is. I will keep warning everyone about it because MakeSpace not only damaged my things, and wasted a huge amount of my time and energy in dealing with the loss they caused. First of all. The reimbursement team will take forever to issue an reimbursement. It has been more than 30 days after I filed my claim, and I still have not received my money. Second, in the end that they found the table top they lost (my "lost" tabletop is kept in the perfect condition compared to other stuff, bed, bookshelf, and sofa, in my storage, isn't it weird and astonishing and scary?) however, when I tried to ask them to reimburse me for the inconvenience they cost (my family did not have a table to dine and work for a month than we decided to buy a brand new one because of their loss), no one followed up. Third, they also re-located another box of stuff they lost (worth 1000 dollars), and then after they put it back into my account they started charging me another monthly fee for storage. TLDR: Spend the money to get a real moving company and save yourself the frustration and headache. MakeSpace destroyed and stole my most valuable items; I rather would have gotten a real company and spent more money at this point and have all my stuff back. I honestly can't believe this company is still in business and am not convinced it's not a scam to get you to buy their more expensive insurance protection plans. I stored my items with MakeSpace from June 2020 - November 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic requiring me to leave New York for a few months over the summer. The only reason that I really chose to store my stuff with MakeSpace was because of my canopy bed frame. Aside from my mattress, it is the most expensive piece of furniture that I own, and otherwise, I would have just packed my mattress, clothes, and books (everything else I had to store was small) and put them into a storage unit myself. MakeSpace completely destroyed my headboard, and now this bed frame is completely unusable. As if that weren't upsetting and infuriating enough, MakeSpace also lost my smart TV as well, which was the second most valuable item I owned. I have high suspicions that the TV was flat out stolen, as it appears to have never been scanned and stored under my name after MakeSpace took it away from my apartment. I am honestly appalled, as I do not think it is unreasonable for a MOVING company whose service I paid for to not completely destroy and lose my items. I doubt I will get anything in compensation back due to not purchasing one of their more expensive plans, even though this was all a result of their incompetence and negligence. We left our stuff stored with MakeSpace for almost year. All the small items were fine, but the bed, the dining table and air conditioning were all ruined. Luckily we were paying extra $15/mo fee for insurance (exactly, your stuff won't be safe by JUST paying the regular monthly payment), and we have been refunded for all of the items, but their refund process is also unreasonably slow. (Still waiting for the last one after a month of sending the claim). I really wanted to like MakeSpace, but in my experience their service was pretty appalling. If you store with them, I seriously recommend you don't store anything you wouldn't mind losing forever. I stored with them for one year and here are some examples of what I experienced: Many of my items were broken. Please read their terms which clearly state that anything fragile is not covered by their insurance (and fragile includes pretty much everything, even things they sell boxes for). Multiple items lost, some permanently. Multiple times in the last year I requested items be delivered that they could not locate. Repeated overcharges that I had to dispute with them and they were very slow to respond to. Poor treatment of my belongings. I watched them literally drag my mattress down the sidewalk getting it covered in street dirt. I was so shocked I took photos. Being erroneously contacted for having their "bins" when I didn't even have them. This happened so often I'm guessing it is a default that you are basically harassed for. Repeated emails threatening to charge me for bins that I didn't have stressing me out. I wish I could go back in time and do anything else with my belongings. If I thought the first delivery from my items from storage was a nightmare with my wood for tire completely cracked in 1/2 and sometimes 3 places , this was even worse. My 19th century gold leaf leaf mirror was completely shattered and wood details were completely torn off the frame. Unsalvageable. Also. Everything had a thick layer of white dust inside the noses and inside the blankets. Appears my belongings were left exposed during some construction. All my Family picture framed, art work and even Advanced degrees were . The damage was so violent . If not for the absolutely fantastic customer service and incredible efficiency of their field crew, I would have given them 4 stars. It is a great service; your order boxes, they drop off boxes, and pick them up when you have them ready. They wrap and package furniture, mirror etc. Both their phone and field customer service is phenomenal. Very pleasant and efficient. However, why I would have rated them 4 stars is their workflow management software system. I had to call them multiple times for various reasons. 1. Even though I had booked a one bed storage space, they said they couldn't plan their logistics/van to pick up all up in one go on the agreed date. However, I was leaving town the same day they were scheduled to pick and so they flexed and offered two pick up dates. 2. I had ordered packing paper and bubble wrap and paid for them. They didn't get delivered and so I had to call twice and follow up. 3. I ordered two wardrobe boxes and they sent me an email that they cannot deliver them because I was in a dorm. No checking by email or nothing - just that. I had to call and tell them that I did not live in a dorm but an apartment and I needed the wardrobe boxes. 4. The crew had to ask me by phone if my building had an elevator. Why isn't this information available on their order form? Or they are not well-trained to read the form? or the form is not user-friendly just like their website. Which is why I blame their workflow software (both UI and backend process) but not the workers. They were simply awesome. Particularly, a shout-out for Jose and Jonathan who handled the bulk of the furniture load. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I would have been better off using self-storage. Nothing is convenient when things arrive broken. They broke a number of sentimental items of mine (glasses, blender, Le Creuset ceramic) and would only cover up to $150 total, and that is even after I paid for insurance. There is a time limit on how long you have to make a claim about damaged and broken items so you also need to examine your boxes and items right away. When I say broke, I mean shattered into tiny pieces things that there were carefully wrapped with padding. Almost as if boxes were carelessly dropped despite being marked fragile. Very little care or concern for items seemed to be shown in addition to needing to plan at least a week in advance if I wanted to retrieve anything. I am glad I read their max coverage policies limits in advance and did not place any truly valuable items in their care. I warned a friend about my experience and she recently reported her husband's items that were recently delivered from this company were missing and tampered with. read more

I would stay away from this company. Pros: very friendly customer service and easy methods of communication. Very important cons: When i was searching for a storage and comparing value, quality and reliability, makespace set apart (mainly due to how responsive my sales rep was) i also liked the convenience of making appointments on app (quickly bc apparent its also very glitchy but still get it done). The day of pick up was my first red flag, the movers arrived and were not qualified and handled my stuff very roughly. They give you bags (which were supposed to be liners for bins. Since they were short on bins i just got liners. The movers were difficulty bc they not only were annoyed that i wrapped my items and asked to get binds to distribute the weight properly...they were trying to tell me that thats not how it works...they just would store my things in these bags liners that don't even have zippers or proper support for the items to be stored. Once i got on the phone the rep apologized and told them to leave the bins and that another appt. would be scheduled My first bill was higher than i was quoted then a few months later they hiked it up again Since i did not expect to keep my items past six months i called to see if i could downsize only to find out that i had been paying for a bigger storage i did not ask for or need. Additionally they changed their whole business model. 1. No flat fee for picking up and dropping off your items 2. You have to pay to see your items 3. The sales department doesn't tell you all the limitations on products they can pick up. I was led to believe my 65 inch tv and large mirror (ikea) would be fine to move but MakeSpace didn't provide their movers with the proper boxers to safely transport these products. They advertise that 55, 65 and even 75 inch TVs are fine, but they only showed up with a 55inch TV box that they had to makeshift for my tv. Then they just used A blanket and bubble wrap on my mirror. One of my movers said there is 9/10 chance the tv will get damaged - and I had no choice but to move it with them since my lease was ending that day and had nowhere else to put it. That's unacceptable to me. Spent the entire next day trying to get ahold of someone from MakeSpace to discuss getting free insurance on those products since it was MakeSpaces error but have yet to hear back. UPDATE: After having my furniture in storage for over 3 months, I recently got it delivered at my new apartment. I couldn't believe how many of my items were damaged beyond repair. As expected, they broke my flat screen tv (see picture) due to them not providing the box size they said they would when I booked the move. They also shattered my standing mirror, snapped my lamp and broke the latch that connects my sectional couch together. I filed a claim to pay for replacement items and MakeSpace originally offered me $200 to replace my $1800 65 inch flatscreen tv and then nothing for the mirror (since I apparently signed some waiver where I should have expected it to break). What!? They also lost track of the Gold Insurance plan I had been paying into for 3 months...but after getting it sorted out they offered me $800 total for all the damage. SUMMARY: I've lived in NYC 12 years and have moved several times. Makespace was by far the worst moving company I've ever used. I couldn't believe how they broke so many of my items (I only have a 1br sized apartment). Then how they low balled me on the claims. Do not use Makespace to store anything that is not in a bin. We stored a $900 white couch which came back with black stains from the storage blanket. We stored a $500 bar cart from West Elm that came back broken and splintered. MakeSpace has terrible refund policy that I am still trying to figure out -- seems like 60 cents per pound and capped at $100 per item and they do not do refunds of storage fees at all. They have not responded to the claim I filed two days ago. I paid another $150 to clean the couch, which just turned all the stains yellow. Just sell your items and buy new ones. read more

However, when trying to retrieve my items, I was informed that I would have to wait 28 days to do so. TWENTY EIGHT DAYS. Why is this an issue? Because (1) I was only storing my stuff for a single month and (2) the sales representative who sold me the service was well aware of the date that I needed to retrieve my items, and insisted this would not be a problem (as long as I paid a little extra, which I regretfully obliged). You'll notice the only good reviews on here are customers who had their stuff picked up but not yet returned to them. We received a delivery of our stuff this week on 6/1. We're missing a brand new TV, expensive mirror and glass coffee table. We had 3 large pieces of furniture damaged beyond repair. I recognize that water glasses or a coffee mug break every now and again during a move - that's part of the deal. This was WAY beyond that -- bordering on false advertising that they take care of your stuff. I spoke with 2 colleagues today who had similar experiences with MakeSpace this year -- I wish I had spoken with them prior to hiring this company. Rahul Gandhi - you should be ashamed. Even if the math works out for you that you trick enough customers to join that don't see the terrible reviews, you should feel something awful about how you're treating your customers (and neighbors) and their belongings. I'm out over $3K -- I cried for the better part of an afternoon over that, and more so the fact that you ruined several pieces of sentimental furniture. Owned by Clutter now, Makespace is the biggest scam of a moving company. They take your things and store them who knows where. Your items will come back with water damage, mold and possibly bed bugs. In addition, if you have anything fragile, it will be returned broken and will not covered by their insurance. All of these things happened to me via MakeSpace / Clutter. Like other customers tricked into setting up storage with makespace because of the well-designed branding, and easy breezy messaging, there was never any part of my experience with Make Space that was simple or convenient. It was all a struggle and riddle with inconveniences I had to absorb. This is a racket; a scam; a hoax. I will be reporting to the Better Business Bureau because everything they claim to offer is misleading. Pickup (storing my stuff) : The movers that came to my house were grouchy, annoyed to be working, discourteous, and reckless with my boxes. I had garment bags with labels to keep them pointed up that they slid down my stairwell and flipped over and over to move them to the truck. Whatever they could do to avoid respecting my belongings, they did it. I saw the guys pounding the top of my box to mash it into the truck to make things fit when there was still plenty of room. As a customer, how can you reprimand movers who you are handing your belongings to? I felt powerless and just had to pray that my things would be treated well at the storage facility. Delivery (accessing from storage): Get ready for another nightmare. The customer service team has basically no control over the warehouse and service operators. So the guys on the phone meant to help you can only give you status updates on what place in line you are or what the NEW ETA will be. If you are okay with waiting for 3 hours and then being told "sorry there's been some delays with the movers, they're very busy" and that your new delivery time will be 15-2hrs later, then this is a service for you. The BS of it all is that they wouldn't let me access my own belongings via self-service because they didn't have open times for pickup 1-month in advance. So I ordered delivery, waited almost 3 hours for the full delivery window for them to tell me they'd be late. You also get about 5 emails leading up to delivery day that warn you about making any changes or cancelation resulting in a $100 fine. With such rigid rules for customers, you'd think they'd hold up their end of the bargain. I will never use this service again and I highly recommend everyone avoid this business. YIKES. The 1st time we used MakeSpace in 2016 was great. The 2nd time? It would be one thing, if an item or two got damaged. Humans make mistakes and that is absolutely understandable and forgivable; however, this isn't just a few 'roughed up' items that I'm talking about: practically everything we stored with MakeSpace is outright ruined or shows signs of mishandeling. This is gross negligence. And let me be absolutely clear: This is not hyperbole. This is not emotionally driven indignation. I mean it when I say that every single furniture item of ours was either damaged or broken beyond repair, and at least 80% of our other possessions that could have been shattered, were shattered. (most of our evidence is video based- attached are a few pictures we took) Not even considering the sentimental loss of so many of our possessions, we also could've saved ourselves thousands of dollars in storage fees from this past year if we had instead just thrown our stuff directly into a dumpster when we moved out of our apartment. In other words: Services paid were NOT rendered. Do not give this company any of your business. They'll destroy your stuff and then charge you a hefty chunk of change to deliver this newly minted trash to your place. I rarely every write a review, but please save yourself the hassle and use another service. Like others before me have stated, many of my items were either destroyed or have been misplaced and I continue to wait for an answer or an estimated delivery date. Items that were displaced are a massive wood bed frame, med-large sized wall art, 2 side tables, and a box with a proyector and an apple tv. I did receive my mattress, but despite paying for their mattress protector bag, it came extremely dirty, as though it had been used to clean their warehouse and then dragged through the streets of the NYC. On top of that, every single box, which was clearly labeled with "fragile" stickers on every single side of the box, was delivered in an extremely poor condition, torn, with holes, openings, and with some items missing, and others shattered. I also received a mirror which had been professionally wrapped by a makespace team member in a blanket and then a box, also came completely shattered. I have been calling customer support 3 days in a row now and every time, at one point, a computer eventually plays a message saying "all customer service reps are busy" and automatically hangs up. Have yet to hear back from an email I sent or a reply to my claims. Oh I was also charged a fee for "keeping things in storage" which are the items that I asked to get delivered in the first place. What a mess! They broke a $300 lamp, $150 space heater, and our office chair is missing. They damaged our property. When I called, they said they likely wouldn't cover the items that THEY broke and that's missing. The customer service rep said "I just want to set your expectations." Make Space has honestly ruined my move back to NYC. I hired them to move out in July 2020 and back in April 2021. My expensive mattress is "missing," yet my box frame and bed frame came back (dented and scraped). Our box labeled "glassware careful" came back largely broken. Our desk chair has a permanent dent. Our dresser has scratches and rips everywhere. Our West Elm couch has stains all over it and weird dents in the cushions that wont come out. We don't even want to sit on the couch because it is so dirty. I watched them drag the couch, uncovered on the street down Columbus Avenue. See photos. Do not trust them. They ask you to leave a review after they pick up your things and that is a positive experience . But when they returned my things many of them were broken . They broke the leg on my armchair and broke the leg off my couch . I'm Missing pieces of both bed frames . They shattered dishes . Lost a piece of my island , an end table , and a lamp . This company could not have done a worse job with service. I wouldn't recommend MakeSpace to my worst enemy. I stored three pieces of furniture and some other odd ends, with the intent to use those pieces of furniture (mattress, nightstand, and dresser) for years to come when I was between apartments this year. For starters, they emailed me saying they "lost" my mattress the morning I was supposed to have it delivered, so wasn't able to sleep in my apartment I am PAYING for for days because I had nothing to sleep on. I have had to crash on other people's couches until a replacement arrived. After saying the mattress initially would just be delayed, I got follow up that not only had they completely lost the item, they wouldn't be able to review the claim that I lost my item for an entire month. So, not only am I out a mattress, I also am out the money to pay for a new one without any help from Makespace on my claim. But this was only the beginning. Upon arriving with my dresser and nightstand, the delivery person unwrapped both to reveal they had both been destroyed by mold, to the point where they were not only unusable but a hazard to even keep in my apartment temporarily. And the delay on the claim review for those items? Six weeks. This company is awful. I hope and pray weeks after they made these mistakes they'll review my claims and give me the refund I deserve but at this point, I am incredibly doubtful. My experience with MakeSpace was great. Customer service responded quickly to requests and communication about packing and pickup was clear. My original pickup schedule did change because the truck filled up faster than expected by another appointment. However, I received two calls to reschedule and make sure I was accommodated the following morning. Aaron and Jesse, the moving staff, couldn't have been nicer and more careful with my items. They wore uniforms and drove a logoed truck (Iron Mountain is the transportation partner), which added to the sense of security in handing my personal items to a stranger. The only feedback I have is about the bags they send in advance. They are strong, large handled bags to pack items, which is good. However, they arrive folded up and it's nearly impossible to keep the flaps open so you can actually fill them. It's a minor issue considering MakeSpace sends them to you for free and include labels with a marker. read more

It seems like posting Yelp reviews is the only way to get this company to do anything. After emailing the company countless times to attempt to get a claim for my damaged items, it seems like I'm going to have to do the same thing for the over $5000 worth of clothing that is somehow just miraculously lost forever in a mystery warehouse. They can't even provide any sort of information about how much of the warehouse has been searched, any progress, etc. Frankly, I'm 100% sure they haven't been looking at all and that absolutely no one has begun searching for the item. Moreover, they've had the audacity to attempt to charge me for storing my missing item-- they wouldn't be storing it if it weren't lost by them! Additionally, the value received for my damaged items was honestly laughable. It didn't even cover the cost of the broken chair (and the claims rep had the gall to tell me to just order new wheels off of Amazon as if they hadn't managed to destroy the metal of the chair where the wheels connect). Again, MakeSpace is the literal worst. I basically paid for them to destroy and lose my belongings. I wish I would've left them on the side of the road instead because at least that is free. Customer service is lacking, to say the least. This entire experience has been such a nightmare and I cannot believe that almost two months later I am still dealing with it. I was nervous after reading the reviews that I would get my items back damaged or broken, and thankfully when I did receive my items back, only two small ceramics items were broken (due to the way in which I packed them). I also made sure to wrap my items extremely carefully with bubble wrap before placing them in the provided bags. Makespace was a great service and were prompt and reliable in dropping off the bins and picking up my items, but be warned you will be charged to not only get all your items delivered back to you but that you will be charged a close out fee for no longer having your stuff stored in the warehouse. read more

Do not use! My daughter was moving out of her apartment and found this company. They offered good prices, so she decided to use them to store her belongings. Huge mistake. They charge less because they haul the stuff to NJ, which is fine, but they do not take care of your items. They broke nearly all of her furniture. They literally completely cracked the wood back and sides of her couch. The only way to do that is to actually throw it off a truck or into a storage unit. It also came back dirty even though it had been covered with plastic when taken away. Her large couch length wall Mirror was completely shattered, as was her wood console table. Her antique table was also broken. Her metal desk came back bent. She had San Marco 100% recycled plates and bowls, which are super thick glass, and most of those were smashed. The majority of glass items were smashed- glass on wall art frames, candle holder, vases, pottery items. All of these had been packed well and wrapped, so clearly the boxes were thrown and treated with no care at all. They took a long time to get back with the claim and reimbursement amount, which they offered $700 which they said was being generous, not even half the price of the couch alone, yet she had to replace just about everything she had stored with them besides things like books. This seems to be an ongoing issue with this company. They make enough profit off of it that they don't care to take care of your things or handle with care, because they know if they are lost, stolen, or broken- they will only have to give you back a tiny amount of money, so they made out and don't care. This service is prob only good If you are storing books or unbreakable items.
