I read a bunch of reviews praising how friendly and helpful the staff at Lockaway are. Even though I live in California, I had to help my daughter get a storage unit for the summer. I decided to go with Lockaway to make the whole process easier. Turns out, it was a great choice. My daughter went to their office, and in about an hour, they got her a unit at a good price and sent her on her way feeling happy and accomplished. Fast forward to today, we're wrapping up her storage unit to move her stuff to her new apartment. While we were waiting for the movers, we got a message saying they'd be an hour late. The Lockaway staff told us not to worry and let us hang out inside. They even offered us cold drinks, cookies, and let us use their phone charger to juice up our devices. I seriously can't recommend this place enough. The lobby has a cool old-school vibe, and the staff is beyond amazing. And I can't forget to mention that the place is really clean, safe, and well taken care of. If you care about your stuff, definitely go with this place. This review is for storage. Service is exceptional. Tony is super helpful. And everyone else in the office as well. They bake chocolate chip cookies. They have a coi pond. They helped back our truck to the loading dock expertly. And when it was raining cats and dogs, my boyfriend and I hung out in their comfortable office until the storm subsided. It's a great location, 20 minutes from the Lower East Side where I live. Like any other storage place, it's hard to nail down what's available sometimes. Finally, I got two 5x5s for my stuff and I'm happy. It's clean. Never saw a pest of any kind. Downside is, they do good business and prices are a tad higher than if you went out to the wilds of Bushwick. And the U-Haul's are expensive, like anywhere else. read more

This place is really the place to go for storage in Brooklyn. I'm mad I didn't find it sooner, I wasted my time and money at Extra Space Storage. First of all, the price you sign up for is the price it stays - this is a huge thing, most corporate storage facilities I've used consistently raise the price until you leave, following some formula they won't tell you in advance about. Second, the staff here are gems. They are all super helpful and kind, and ready to assist you. If there is a problem, they will take care of it. I now recommend this place to all my friends with storage needs. Bonus part - having 24-hour access capability. So some months, I paid $30 extra for it when I was working super long hours, but most months I didn't have it and didn't pay. Dodgy, dodgy dodgy I was in the process of finding storage (the economy sucking has necessitated moving into a smaller place) so i called several places taking notes as i went.... I spoke with Mike at Lockaway Self Storage and was told: -there was a 5x5x7 available on the 6th floor -the cost was $74 per month -there was an elevator, security system, fire protection -there was a second-month free special in place -new tenants got to use Lockaway's truck for 3 hours on the day they moved in (this sold me) I ARRIVE (boxes and pregnant wife in tow) and am told -the one on the 6th floor IS available but it's $90/month -there IS an elevator but it does not go to that floor -if i want one with an elevator, it's $129 per month -there is no second-month-free special -if i want the truck it's $3 per mile (three time the norm) -Mike is an idiot and "always does this" dodgy, scheister crap!!!!...Iif a representative of yours does this then honor the prices quoted (especially because i had his info written down and was obviously not making it up.) Also if he "always does this" and he is speaking out of turn and it's NOT a SCAM, then FIRE HIM!!! HORRIBLE read more

I found Lockaway when I moved from NJ to Brooklyn and wanted somewhere to store my belongings for 3-6 months and close to where we could also drop off our Uhaul rental truck. These guys are outstanding. The office area is incredibly decorated with interesting antiques and we were greeted with freshly baked cookies, hot drinks and candy. Moving is stressful and after taking 13 hours to load the truck, emptying some contents to our apartment and 2 parking tickets later we had had it with moving. The waterfall/koi pond at the entrance definitely helped with easing some of our anxiety. My bf actually said, he wouldn't mind going there just to hang out! :) Actually, we dealt with Mike too, he took one look at the contents of the truck and recommended a smaller and cheaper space for our storage items. They provide dollies, elevator access and have the convenience of a loading bay. We also received our 2nd month rental free. 4 hours later, we were finally done unloading - yippee! We ate more cookies and they even arranged a car service to take us home. I can't stress enough how awesome our experience has been. I hope this review helps someone, as these guys are just really great at what they do. read more

Let's start with the most important thing here. No, it's not the friendly lady at the front desk that is clearly overworked and yet happily accommodating and gracious. No, it's not the ability to reach anyone pretty much anytime you need. And no - it's not how much of a grace period they give you on final due dates if you, like me, aren't ever paying attention to your mail and aren't living in nyc anymore. The most important thing? FRESHLY BAKED COOKIES. The nice lady at the front gave me her secret to making them so chewy and delicious, but I was so frazzled with the moving process that day that I misplaced her directions and her name. That is unfortunate, as I have been meaning to send her a thank you note ever since that chaotic afternoon. I'm quite glad that the whole of what is left of my life in New York City is safely locked away in their storage unit. The only issue I do have with Lock Away, was that there seems to be a distinct lack of communication between the support staff. Again, not their fault. I get the impression that they work very, very hard and are doing their best. My advice is to make sure any promises or absolutes be guaranteed in paper or with the name and contact information of the person making the promises. That said- I love them. I wasn't in New York City and I needed my bill to be paid and I thought (incorrectly) that it needed to be paid in person. So I arranged for my friend to take time out of his day to travel across Brooklyn and fork over $800 in cash to get me up to date in their books. He did this AND he himself was very impressed, enough to comment on it on his own. Not just with the staff, but also with how easy it was for him to get there. Thank you, Lock Away! You really are wonderful. Storage can be a nightmare when it is managed from opposite sides of the country but you all have taken care of me and my storage unit and I appreciate it. read more

Ok, so moving is never a stress free adventure as we all know, but several things can go right to make it a less masochistic experience. Lockaway was an oasis among the grime and grit of the city. Outside the front door was a babbling brook (literally a rock water garden). Inside, they had fresh baked chocolate chip cookies and coffee. We were greeted with a smile, and treated like a next door neighbor. The price was reasonable, and the people were so accommodating and patient. I really love this Uhaul location!! As everyone knows, it is never fun moving apartments, it's a very irritating process no matter how little of things you own. But this Uhaul location completely uplifted my boyfriend's mood and my own for the whole process! Upon walking in, there is a pretty koi fish waterfall which was the first indicator that I would love this place. Inside, you are transported to a bygone era. The owner of the building is a collector, so there are many interesting antiques to look at, with classical music playing in the background :-) Customer service was great, we were in the van in no time and done moving everything within 7 hours total. We dropped the keys off after hours, again no problem with that, and the charge to my card was accurate and very reasonable. I highly recommend this Uhaul location to anyone close by in Brooklyn. read more

This is a review for uhaul rental, not storage. I'm sad to give 1 star, as it's very adorable inside as an old post office with lots of collectibles! Buuuuut I just had the most ridiculous customer service experience ever. Arrived for my 1pm van pickup, and there were about 7 people in front of me, and no one helping anyone! Ditched help! As we admired the cool rando decor of a uhaul and waterfall with fish pond, the only worker walked in and continued to help an incompetently offensive couple get a space. Normally, you multi task to get your customers keep going, but this guy ignored everyone and helped these idiots! At this point, Tracy (the worker) was still being rude to everyone else waiting. I went up to the side and was like can I get this van and he's like just fill out this credit card sheet. So I did and waited for this couple to get their stupid space. Meanwhile 3 people decided to leave because we were all standing here for 45 minutes. This is a review about their Uhual service... Amazing! The outer view of the building is nothing to stare at... as you walk in, even, you think, "OK, I see some Uhaul trucks..."... However, you turn the corner and are met with an amazing koi bond... Ha! As you walk in you realize that the person/people who run this place actually care about their space! It is clean, organized, and we are greeted straight away by TONY. Tony was amazing... I mean... are we really in a Uhaul rental office right now? Wait... chocolate chip cookies? Coffee?? A tour of the old mail room that the office was built around??? This place is awesome... The Antique Road Show would love to enter this office! Haha! This place is the mecca of storage spaces. They are the standard by which I will compare each and every future non-Lockaway Self Storage experience -which I think will only happen if I really had no choice. Because I really can't see myself with any other storage place. It's true love, it really is. They have candy and cookies, a surprising old school lounge, and 30 year old koi fish. They were great and very nice which is a facade they truly only care about the money! So while I was waiting to receive financial assistance from HRA to help pay off the balance of my storage unit all while being homeless and out on the streets with my kids, this storage place decided to secretly and illegally auction off my storage unit! And for that they suck! I wouldn't recommend them to anyone especially if your in a foul situation and you need help and someone on your side this isn't the place to go! I was *uked up with nothing and they knew that I was doing my best to salvage life and keep it together! I was waiting for social services to help me pay the full amount of what I owed on the unit and was waiting for the checks! Till this day I still have the checks for the complete balanced owed but when I triumphantly reached out to call them and say I was in route on my way with the payment, on the eve of thanksgiving sadly I was met with the response of "oh wow your unit was sold today in the auction" "didn't he call you and let you know "?! UMMM NOOOOO TF YOU DID NOT! I wasn't notified nor was I formerly contacted with the proper procedure in this process to let me know my unit was being sold! So for that they suck and are very unprofessional and they illegally sold my unit without notice! So NO I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BUSINESS FOR ANYONE! Last thing you need is a sneak waiting in bay like a predator for your loss vultures!! read more

This storage place is different from any other. For one, there's a rather random koi pond in the front. Second they have all kinds of vintage postal office furniture and others kinds of unique stuff inside the office that just makes it interesting and kind of a pleasure to have to stop into. Three, they offer hot tea, coffee and cookies, iced tea when it's warm out. They treat customers like people with real needs and concerns in a way that is compassionate, and kind. Unlike Furyk C. I had no problems with Lockaway Self Storage for vehicle rental. I found these guys through the U-Haul locator online and reserved a cargo van for my move from the East Village to Fort Greene. Maybe a week before the move, my future roommate told me that the guy moving out wanted to borrow the truck for a couple hours after I was done to cart his crap off to Bed-Stuy. Against my better judgment and only days before my move (on the crazy Memorial Day weekend) I call Lockaway Self Storage and ask to extend my reservation from a modest four hours (10am-2pm) as late as possible. In moments, my reservation is extended until 4pm and with a bit of finagling by juggling vehicles, I have until 5:30pm to return the vehicle. Easy peasy. While I have to restate this change upon arrival, there was no still problem. But the differentiating factor about Lockaway Self Storage is the way they dressed up the place, inside the barbed wire and parking lot. I don't know what possesses someone to put a koi pond and ivy outside their office front doors, but it prepared me for their interior decorating. Upon entering, I am transported to a post office of yesteryear complete with fine woodwork, old stove and antiques. Its architectural details were so visually interesting I would have been willing to wait twice as long just to check out the place. Plus, this environment lulled me into a calm which is invaluable during a stressful move. So if you need a one-two punch of moving vehicle and tranquil respite, Lockaway Self Storage is your place. read more

DO NOT STORE THINGS HERE The storage units are decent, the reception area is nice....the service staff are completely incompetent. They managed to increase the price of my locker in their system from $74 /month to $178 /month, 2 months after I moved in. After being re-assured that this was fixed, they still managed to padlock my locker and hold my stuff hostage for several weeks until it was fixed in their system - the whole time telling me that if I wanted my stuff again I owed them the additional balance of several hundred dollars (note that this was less than 3 months after moving in). When I went to the office to resolve the issue, I had to wait in a queue of people dealing with similar issues of incompetence, most of whom we're having their stuff held hostage by Lock Away. I rent one of the larger storage units here - there is no air con or regulation of the climate so beware if you have heat/humidity sensitive items. The service on the weekend is non-existent and their telephone service poor. Beware the stickiness of storage generally - once you're in it's difficult to leave! I'm planning my departure asap. I just finished up my first year of college, and I was moving out of my dorm. Before finding Lockaway, I had actually tried to rent from another storage service. They said they would contact me and send a van to help pickup my stuff... come move out day, no van arrived. No word from this company. Thankfully, I found Lockaway. I phoned in and immediately could tell Keely was a warm, genuine, decent person. I was (understandably) in distress, with several bags and no where to put them. But Keely was helpful and kind and probably was not aware of how much she was able to calm me down. She answered all of my questions and after the call there was absolutely no confusion on my end, I felt like I finally had a solid plan again thanks to her. Unfortunately, as I sped to pack my stuff and check out of my dorm, I realized I'd be at Lockaway only about 5 minutes before closing. I definitely would have understood if they had pushed serving me until the next day, but when I called to let them know, they allowed me to come in and store all of my stuff anyways. Instead of grumbling and huffing all night, they stayed a little under an hour past closing trying to give me the best deal I could get and insisting it was no trouble. In fact, rather than giving me a late check-in penalty fee or something of the sort, they actually gave me a small discount! Keely was kind enough to give compliments as to my manner and person, which was heartwarming after such a long and stressful day. The storage units are plentiful, clean, and secure, and the reception lounge is homey - the last thing you might expect for a storage service! Refreshments, nice furniture, gorgeous interior design (including a koi pond outside), I was even offered hot tea (again, long after closing). Amazing service. TL;DR Lockaway was my second choice, but should be your first. Keely is one of the most good persons you'll have pleasure of meeting. read more

I was moving apartments and I needed to temporarily store my things while I looked for a new place. After a lot of research and reading the reviews about Lockaway self storage, I decided to go there and visit. I went there, and everything was clean I didn't see any rodents or pest of any kind. The neighbor seems safe, I didn't feel uncomfortable there. The office staff was exceedingly nice they are very polite to their customers. They showed me a few options of units I could pick that were in my price range and about the size that I needed. I felt like their prices were very reasonable. They never tried to overcharge me or nickel and dime me. Burnard is the absolute best. He's so kind and so accommodating, in fact all of the staff is. I would highly recommend them. I had my things stored there for four months and everything was clean, dry, and pest-free. They have loading materials that can help you move things and the freight elevator makes moving a breeze. read more

This was a wonderful experience. The shop is adorably quaint with homemade cookies, coffee & tea & the service was very quick and pleasant. I reserved a truck for 4 hours and was told I would be charged an extra day if it was late. Needless to say, I got lost on the way back and returned the truck an hour late, at 6pm. They did not charge me any additional fees. DO NOT drive a truck over the Brooklyn Bridge (they warned me about this in the nick of time). I would use Lockaway again in a heartbeat. read more

best uhaul rental experience i have ever had-- shit, best business experience in general. tracie was extremely polite, patient, and helpful. he could tell I was pissed about u-haul messing up my reservation and automatically upgraded our reservation to a 24 hour rental. he offered us freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and coffee, and we wandered around looking at the koi pond and antiques while he pulled out the truck. he explained everything about the truck and our contract clearly and efficiently, and preemptively answered all our questions before we could even ask them. beautiful place, great service, painless rental. I've been a longtime customer, going even back to the 90's...remember those days? This place "echoes history" and classic brownstone Brooklyn! Upon entering the reception/front-desk area (after passing the koi pond [many huge 20yo fish] at the doorway on the outside) inside it's more like a laid-back, cozy boutique lounge and museum rather than self-storage and office (also supplies, shipping and mail box rentals). Even the restroom is like stepping into an old Godfather movie scene. These is even complimentary coffee, organic tea, lemonade, fresh-baked cookies and candies, go well with the lounge with comfy chairs, recharge outlets, conference area, and makes it more like a Starbucks. in the storage spaces, there are extra high ceilings also that allow more "stuff" to be packed and stacked away! Also, true-to-it's name, Lockaway, unlike others nearby that have frequent break-in's, it really is and feels more secure, because of having cameras and monitors everywhere, and double x2 security gates -- first at the street when entering 1st small free parking area, then thru the 2nd gate into the inner courtyard with other parking spaces and loading dock area (for 5 trucks). There's even another larger auxiliary parking lot for long-term/monthly rentals. The best value and "warmly-welcoming"... best "soothing" place to keep coming back to! Maui read more

I never thought I would leave a review for a self storage facility, but the staff here were SO NICE! Keely was extremely helpful, I reserved my unit online and then called to follow up to confirm availability and inquire about their "free van" for first time movers - she walked me through the entire process and gave me a few different unit options. Keely even called back to confirm move-in times and van availability (which is really free!). When I went in to sign my lease, I felt like I was visiting and old friend. Keely was so sweet and patient, she assured me that my unit would be cleaned before my move-in date (even though it already looked spotless) and that she would be available 24/7 if I ever had any issues as she lived just around the corner. This was by far the easiest, most reassuring moving/storage process I've ever had. Not to mention, the actual facility is very well protected, easy to find and navigate, and has tons of hand carts available to make your move as easy as possible. read more
