I genuinely enjoy the food at Maki Bar -- it's always fresh, flavorful, and consistently good. The spicy mayonnaise is especially delicious, and that's honestly one of the reasons I kept coming back. I used to dine in once or twice a week because I like the food that much. Unfortunately, every time we go, we seem to have the same waitress, and the service experience has really changed how often we come in. She consistently acts like she doesn't want to be there and seems visibly annoyed if you ask for anything. It makes you feel like you're inconveniencing her just by ordering or requesting something simple. Because of this, I've completely stopped dining in and now only order carryout. It's disappointing because the food deserves a great in-restaurant experience to match. Very cozy place. Nothing grand, but just enough to catch the eye and make you feel like it's a well kept establishment. The exact kind of place I prefer to get sushi from. Service was efficient and the workers were friendly. The prices weren't the cheapest around, but they weren't on the higher end either. Price/Value: 3/5 - Ended up paying about $20 for two rolls which is alright but not the best value for the quality I would say. I am not too sure I would come back just because I have had better sushi rolls for a lower price before. It was good to try out once. She came up to us several times all within the first 5ish minutes of being seated to get our order and gave us our check when we were still eating. We did not come at closing time so I am unsure as to what the rush was when the restaurant was half empty. I've ordered sushi and sashimi to go on several occasions. The location is pretty great because while you're waiting for your order you can run to either Trader Joe's or Target. I can't offer any information for dining in but the service received for my take out orders has been superb and very friendly. It's not a huge location so you may have to wait for a seat to dine in when busy but it's very clean and open. I could see this being a great spot for a casual date, lunch, dinner, or almost anything. I've seen people of all ages dining here including younger kids that were having fun watching the chefs making the sushi. read more

The menu is vast with more than speciality and chef made Maki Rolls, you can delight in Tuna Poke, Entree Salads, Noodle Bowls, Japanese Rice Plates as well as drinks from the bar offering Wine & Sake. Each employee was kind, the dining area was quaint & staged with the right balance of tables & inspirational decor. The dinnerware of an indigo hue enhances the dining experience. The entire space was in immaculate order, especially the Unisex Restroom that was highly cleaned adding a warm touch of decor with a marble basin & blue mirror. I'm not sure if it was an off day for them or what but it was very disappointing. Everything was slow, they forgot parts of the order and she went to take the order of another table interrupting my reminder that they forgot some stuff, and she tried to charge us $3 extra just to add some crunchy to some of the maki. Not a pleasant meal. The sushi was decent. It's better to go to Tako Grill or Yirasai. I will unfortunately not be back here anytime soon. read more

Visited Maki Bar on 12/9. Pork gyoza were very good. Unagi was below average, as was tuna sashimi. Miso soup was great, with nice big pieces of seaweed and tofu and a strong miso flavor. I recently discovered this sushi spot and ordered take-out from here on a Friday night. Maki Bar is located in the same little plaza as Trader Joe's and Target near downtown Bethesda. Lured in by positive reviews, I decided to try it out. I ordered the Happy Salmon roll and spicy tuna roll. Aaaand I loved both. Spicy tuna is almost always my go-to roll, and their fish-to-rice ratio here is great. This roll was melt-in-your-mouth good. The Happy Salmon roll was awesome! It was filled with fresh salmon and topped with thinly sliced pieces of salmon and avocado. I really like that their sushi pieces are huge and filling, and they don't skimp on the fish. I really want to try their Crazy Salmon and Red Dragon rolls next time, which seem to be next-level with some additional sauces, toppings, and crunches. The sushi here is definitely on the pricier side, as one signature roll and one regular roll turned out to be around $20. However, you're paying for quality so I think the price tag is worth it if you're in the mood for a nice sushi dinner. I came here on a Saturday night and it was packed. There was a large party that took up several tables, luckily there were still some open seats available and we were seated immediately. I ordered Hot Green Tea, Red Dragon Roll and Tuna Roll. My fiance ordered the Alaskan Roll and Chirashi. The Hot Green Tea was $2 for a teapot, pricey in my opinion... especially since most sushi restaurants do not charge for green tea and it is usually unlimited refill as well. The Red Dragon Roll was very flavorful, I liked the Spicy Mayo sauce used on the rolls. The rolls come with spicy crunch tuna, avocado and tobiko. The tuna was fresh as well as the avocado, the only weird thing was the presentation of the tobiko... it was all just dumped onto one roll. It would've been better on the plate in a pile beside the roll. The Tuna Roll was good as well, very fresh. The Alaskan Roll was good, fresh fish and ingredients. It comes with salmon and avocado. The Chirashi is very reasonably priced at $11 for the amount of fish that you get. It comes with 6 pieces of assorted sashimi over sushi rice. On top of the 6 pieces of assorted sashimi, you also get two pieces of tamago (cooked egg). I liked the consistency of the rice for all of the rolls, the rice was wet... but not mushy. Overall I had a decent experience here, the food was good and the service was average. The staff were slammed because of the large dinner party so we barely got checked on meaning zero refills for our drinks. I would give this place another try, hopefully when it isn't so packed in hopes of better service. Parking is available in a nearby garage, but the parking spaces are tiny so you may feel more comfortable finding street parking. read more

Maki Bar has to be one of my favorite sushi spots in Bethesda! Their nigiri and maki rolls never disappoint me - whether it's their spicy scallop sushi, Alaska roll, salmon roll or any of their specialty rolls. The fish always tastes fresh but there are many other options for those who may not be too adventurous with their order. My SO loves their tempura plate (batter is light and crispy) - it's pretty difficult to eat it all! The dressing they use on the salads is sweeter than what you'd normally find - containing more apples than the standard carrot/ginger dressing. The last time I was there, they had ramen as their daily special so I'd love to try that next! Parking is a bit difficult - if you're lucky, you might be able to get parking on that small side street or you can park in the notoriously small TJ lot behind the building. read more

I have a sneaking suspicion that Maki Bar is owned/related to Maki Maki right up the road... I was first clued in by the name... I know. A regular Sherlock Moriarity! Then I took out their to go menu at my place which I've been getting in the mail. Took out Maki Maki's to go menu. It's the same size and color paper. The "We Deliver" is in the same font. They have the same 20 dollar minimum for delivery orders So I ended up going and dining there. They have a very similar modern Japanese restaurant style. The menu is very similar (with Maki Maki signatures like the Wasabi Shumai... at least, I've never gotten those anywhere else) They have the same exact table tents on the table as Maki Maki that are advertising Japanese Popcorn Chicken. I just kept asking myself... are they sister restaurants? I kinda wanted to ask the waitress, but I decided not too. In my head I had already decided that they were related. I mean... how many things could be the same without them being related. Maki Bar does have a few differences. For instance the crispy monster ( which I almost ordered) is not on the menu at Maki Maki. A battered fried octopus. I'll definitely be getting that next time. I ordered the California Rolls as I normally do.. and they tasted just a TINY bit different than Maki Maki. But in a good way. I'm actually not the biggest fan of the mayo or seasoning they use in the fake crab at Maki Maki. But Maki Bar didn't seem to have this taste. The Wasabi Shumai, which I'm fairly sure come 5 to an order at Maki Maki came 4 to an order at Maki Bar. They use the same white ginger. Overally my experience at Maki Bar was excellent. The customer service was excellent, the food was top notch. Everything was super fresh. The place is as clean as a whistle ( a phrase I never really got as whistles seem generally very dirty). I'd think to really clean a whistle you'd probably need to soak it in vinegar followed by a good detailed scrub with a small brush that can get in all the inside crevices. This wonderful, peaceful nook has my favorite California Roll in the area: Thin outer layer of rice; and a generous, finely slivered crab mix with fresh avocado. Every component tastes and feels very fresh. The wasabi, ginger, rice, everything! Sushi is pretty "simple"; ergo if one aspect is mediocre, the dish will be ... unspecial. The CA Roll here comes generously sprinkled with those tiny, bright orange roe that pop in your mouth with a faint but welcome added bonus of fresh fish. Every time I have ever ordered this, the freshness, presentation, size (generous on filling, so if you like a low carb diet but are craving sushi, this is your spot. The CA Roll is typically 85-90% filling.) They have a lunch special on prices between 11am-3pm, M-F, with excellent prices on select sushi and bentos. I honestly love their CA Rolls. (I have also greatly enjoyed their tempura meals. The dilping sauce is a traditional thin, broth-like consistency. (I personally favor savory over sweet, and the tempura sauce here is mildly sweet. I suspect that folks in the Mid-Atlantic used to Southern cooking may like the slight sweetness more than I do, but ot is mild and enjoyable. I am from Hawaii and grew up making tempura witg my mom at home.) They make wonderful tempura. The batter is light and crisp! (Not like the heavy, greasy dough that mortified me from a well-received other Japanese eaterie in my county here.). Maki Bar has fresh, delicious, very tastefully seasoned sushi. I came here for an early dinner last week and I'm glad I did. The server was extremely friendly and the sushi was pretty solid. What sets this place apart is that it's no frills sushi. If you're looking for exotic fish and specialty rolls this is not the place for you. If you're in the mood for your basic sushi offerings at a good price then this is the place for you. The interior is nice and comfortable. The parking situation at this shopping plaza is horrendous. I was there at an odd hour (around 2:30 PMish) and the parking lot was still pretty packed. The lanes are narrow and I was lucky I didn't have to go to a lower level to park. I don't know what the developer was thinking of having such a poor parking lot, especially when there is a Trader Joe's here. Oh well. I don't think I'd come here during busy hours but its worth a stop during off hours for sure. read more

I love this place. I've gotten takeout maybe 6-7 times in the last few months. Server and chef are always masked, and they're just doing take out right now. The lunch special of two maki rolls for $8 is a great deal, and probably my most common go-to. My partner and I have also gotten bento boxes, and I've done a sushimi special, too.
