I dropped by Maki Maki in search of a some lunchtime grub. Interestingly, I thought I was visiting a place that I had previously visited, but I quickly learned this was going to be a first-time dining experience for me. I was somewhat surprised that the restaurant was completely empty during lunch. However, I remembered that I dropped by a couple of days before Christmas, so folks probably where trying to head home or doing last-minute Christmas shopping. I took advantage of the sesame beef bento box lunch special, which was about $13 for the lunch special. I believe the lunch special, that includes a choice between various bento boxes and two maki rolls, from 11 am to 3 pm. My bento box included a good portion of sesame beef, a salad, some rice, and a three-piece California roll. Since the California roll was kind of thick, I'll say the roll was more like a four-piece standard roll. I was a bit surprised the bento box did not include a soup and/or dumplings, but it was what it was. Overall, I thought the bento box was quite tasty, and I really loved that the beef was crispy. It was slightly different style of preparation that I'm used to, but I think it really worked. The staff was very nice, and the restaurant was very clean. There is a paid public parking lot a few feet from the restaurant. However, I think the restaurant might have its own parking area, so double check before paying for parking. read more

Maki Maki is a solid choice if you live in downtown Bethesda and you don't want to drive to Taipei Tokyo off of Rockville Pike. I have been eating here for over a decade and the consistency is good. The quality isn't bad. I wish the wasabi was spicier and I wish the rolls weren't so rice heavy. The service is always consistent. They're always very polite although they get my order wrong a lot which is so annoying but all in all if you live in downtown Bethesda and you want Sushi Maki Maki is a great choice. read more

Came for a Saturday lunch and it was not busy at all inside. The prices were great, especially since you can order the lunch special on the weekend. Sweet potato roll is my favorite, and these were perhaps the biggest pieces I've ever had! And super freshly prepared tempura. I found this place because I was staying at the Bethesdan Hotel and it's right across the street. I really liked Maki Maki, they were huge and very filling. I ordered the Love at first sight roll and spider rolls. While, simple, they made these rolls really well. I would definitely come back. This is one of my go to sushi places. I often order thru Uber, but today I decided to go in person since I was in the area. I arrived around noon, and was informed that their credit card machine was down so they were only taking cash at the time. There was two banks nearby, so I quickly stopped by one and grabbed some cash. I ordered three of the lunch specials: the sesame chicken bento, the sashimi lunch, and the two rolls special. The first two were $12.95 each, and the two rolls were $10.50. Very good deal for lunch. The bento came with chicken, rice, 3 piece California roll, and a salad with a dressing was like a ginger wasabi vinegrette or something, but not too spicy. The chicken was hot and crispy. The sashimi lunch was 2 pieces salmon, 2 pieces white tuna, and 2 pieces snapper. They were thick cut pieces, and it also came with 6 piece California roll. Lastly the two rolls I got were the eel avocado and the Vegas roll which is tuna avocado. Everything was delicious and I had leftovers to bring home. The only thing I find weird is the fact that the California roll is listed as having peanut butter in it. The only thing I could think of is if they mean peanut oil in the crab mixture, because it definitely doesn't taste like peanut butter. Either way, I will continue to order from here. read more

It's been some time since I have been here. Occasionally traveling for Bethesda..being cold and directly across from the hotel....and I wanted sushi. So--due.to.covid ..it is take out only. My avacado roll was simple and fresh. My spicy crunchy white tuna was a good concept but a bit fishy-- in a bad way and disappointing The other roll had shrimp tempura topped with spicy tuna..it was good..fresh but a bit messy to eat. I love sushi and so does my family! My granddaughter wanted sushi, but it was a school night and her mom wanted us to stay close by. We went over to Maki Maki. The restaurant is located on Wisconsin Avenue. There is public parking right behind the restaurant. It is a lovely restaurant with pretty prints decorating the walls. When, we entered we were the only ones there. As the time progressed, a lot of young people and business professionals came in. Service was good and we have our standard order: California rolls and shrimp tempura rolls. Both were fresh and very tasty. There is a sauce on the shrimp tempura roll, which was good, but different than other restaurants that I have been served this roll before. My other granddaughter had chicken fried rice. It was a huge portion and tasted delicious. Be prepared to pay a little more for your sushi. Two rolls cost about $12.00. They also charge for tea. You can order a variety of sushi or sashimi. The sushi bar has a large number of seats, so you can watch the chef prepare your dinner. It is definitely a young professional vibe, but we were welcomed and taken care of. We found this place as a mistake. We wanted to go to Maki in Rockville, but I accidentally typed in this place:/ We were already there, so we decided to go in. I got the tuna poke bowl and it was tasty. I liked it very much, but I felt like the portion size was too small. It came in a small bowl. It had seaweed salad, tuna, and rice. I got brown rice instead of white and it cost an additional dollar. The service was good and the girl was attentive to our needs. Also, they were pretty friendly. Not a bad choice. You just have to find meter parking and the parking can be a hassle. read more

To hear 'To Go' can make a big difference on your Sushi experience is not what I believe. I would state more effort should go into the TG orders so one would be inclined to return & dine in...unfortunately it didn't & won't happen here. Once the Sushi arrived home it was not a good look in presentation nor taste. & the difficulty in trying to transfer from container to plate was unnecessary. My order was simply all Veggies & still disappointing. My Gal Pal's Sushi selections - the Red Dragon & Maki Rolls were so saturated with Spicy Sauce she couldn't enjoy her food, yet was content with the Happy Salmon Roll. The good thing is not having to provide my Credit Card information over the phone & being able to pay in person. I had received recommendations to try this place out for lunch because of their lunch deal: 2 rolls for $8.50! I orders the spicy tuna roll and spicy salmon roll, spring rolls, and a miso soup. This is a straight up corner lunchtime sushi joint. I mean, who else is going to come here other than those who work or go to school in the immediate vicinity? The lunch special is where it's at. For about $8, you get 2 "basic" rolls. I'm not talking sophistic Dragon Lion King roll. You get real simple rolls that take 5 seconds to make--a small piece of fish wrapped in rice and the toasted sheet of nori seaweed. So if that's what you seek then you're in luck because they're $4 a pop. Service is great/fast and your lunch stomach will be satisfied. I would even say- a family institution for the B. gang. But I live in Bethesda, so when I want sushi... which is pretty much always- it's annoying to drive all the way up to Rockville. So, I started going to Maki Maki. Inherently, I was like - THIS IS NOT SUSHI HOUSE- MEH ! But, once my brain gave it a chance - I was like - this is damn well near Sushi House and maybe even... on par? GASP! I'm a California Roll sort of guy. Even so much so that I can make my own California rolls. But, since I don't have 2 hours to make dinner each night ( THAT RICE TAKES SO LONG!!) , I dipset- and I'm off to Maki Maki. I have nothing bad to say about this place...I love love love it here! I've been here several times now...the food and service just keeps me coming back. Lunch or dinner, no matter what time of day you go the fish here is always fresh and just melts in your mouth. DELICIOUS! I have yet to eat a roll or piece of nigiri here that I haven't liked! My favorites are the smoked salmon nigiri (2 pieces for $3.95), spicy white tuna roll with lettuce ($3.95), and the salmon skin roll ($3.95). The rolls are cut into six, even pieces and you could just taste goodness in every bite. The salmon is smoked nicely, the salmon skin has just the right amount of crunch when you bite into it, and the white tuna is just plain good. NOM NOM NOM. The sushi here is super cheap, but it gets even cheaper at lunch time! Everyday from 11am-3pm they have their lunch menu. Two rolls for $5.95 (you choose from a selection of rolls)...how could you beat that deal?! Their bento boxes are also only $7.95 (comes with 3 pieces of CA roll, salad, and rice). I've tried the sesame beef bento box before, and it is pretty good. The portion size is large enough for another meal. The beef pieces are fried just right, so good! The servers here are always pleasant. They are always attentive and ask you what you want to drink right when you're seated. Most times that I have been here, this place has never been crowded (it's a fairly small restaurant too). I do notice that they always get a steady stream of customers ordering to go here though. They even do delivery! This is my go to sushi place when I'm in Bethesda and even when I'm not in Bethesda. I guess when I'm craving sushi, you'll most likely find me here. The customer service is horrible. They gave my order to the wrong person and treated my husband as if it was his fault! They could have just said they were sorry and ask how we'd like to handle it but instead they doubted him and refused to credit the order. It took him getting upset before they finally cancelled the order. Once they finally cancelled the charge, they kept the tip I had included! We've have ordered there several times in the past and the food is usually good, but expensive. You'd think they would offer up a little basic customer service for the prices they charge. I usually get the shrimp avocado and california roll. My one wish is that they invest in a website. It is very confusing for users with a similarly named restaurant down the street. I've been coming here for years. It's never too crowded here and the staff is friendly. It is on the outskirts of downtown Bethesda. It is actually one of the last restaurants you'll encounter heading north on Wisconsin. The parking isn't free most of the time which is a drawback for some. The sushi is decent here. I am not the best judge of that but it is certainly something that always satisfies me. Right now it is still nestled in an area of Bethesda that is older. There is a charm to that. Despite Covid, this place is still serving excellent food and generous portions. Ordered the Chirashi, a California roll, Shrimp fried rice, tempura shrimp with rice and salad, miso soup, seafood udon noodle soup, and a 350 ml bottle of Sake for about $85.00, and we will be eating for days. The tempura shrimp and fried rice were in large containers and filled well over the brim. The Chirashi was fresh and yummy, as was the miso soup. Overall, another great experience. read more

This is a hit and miss casual dining spot that carries on a brisk take-out business. Noticing how clean the space was, we started our evening with high expectations, hoping we'd finally found a really good Japanese joint in Bethesda. The sushi platter was well presented with lovely cuts, unusually yummy pickled ginger slices, and a filling variety of flavors. The eel on rice dish delivered tender, savory eel on a bed of simple white rice. The bowl it came in was super hot, making its enjoyment a bit awkward as my fellow diner had to be constantly focused on not burning her hand in case of contact. Perhaps the bowl was too deep? The udon soup was a great disappointment. The broth seemed to be soy sauce based and the chicken, despite being drenched in soup, was dry and unpleasant to chew. I'd consider returning for lunch to try another dish or two if something quick near home was needed, but overall, Maki Maki doesn't have the right recipe to gather much more attention than that. read more

I was in the mood for an in and out experience, much like...oh, let's just say the 69 Boyz. I was lucky enough to find an open meter right off Wisconsin Ave and was able to scrounge up enough change for 30 mins worth of meter love. Luckily, an 3:30pm I was the only person in the restaurant at the time. Not always a sure fire sign of excellent service to come, but I felt the odds were in my favor. I sat at the bar and was helped immediately. I quick scan over the menu and I declared that a Red Dragoon was in order (spicy crunch tuna topped with avocado, tobiko & spicy sauce for $10.95.) The roll came out quickly and packed just the right amount of heat. The rice to fish ratio was also perfect and overall I found the roll delicious and satisfying. It actually filled me up on it's own. When I finished, my check was brought out immediately with an incredibly tasty, milky Japanese candy that I savored as I walked to my car. Nice change up from the typical mint or fortune cookie! Definitely a solid and reasonably priced restaurant for sushi in Bethesda. I will definitely return in the future. read more

Three and a half stars for another Chinese-run sushi joint. Lusciously thick cuts of sashimi. Salmon and white tuna left me with no complaints, and what the red snapper lacked in comparable girth, it more than made up for in length. Insert lewd winky faces here. Wasn't a fan of the bento rice or the vegetable tempura; I prefer a more glutinous grain and less oil-sodden batter. Sesame entrees are more satisfying than teriyaki, with the salmon latter way overcooked by default. Smoked eel bento was filling thanks to the sweetly sauced rice, bean curd pouch, and densely populated salad on the side. I'd be okay with returning for more protein. read more

Getting into the restaurant is a bit confusing because the front door opens right into the dining space so they have it locked. You have to walk around to the back to go in. I think they usually have a sign, but it wasn't up when we went so we kind of just wandered until someone pointed towards the back. My friend and I ordered the red dragon roll and the Vegas roll. It wasn't amazing, but it was good. I've definitely had better sushi, but it's not a bad spot for a quick sushi fix. The restaurant is tiny so I'd avoid prime lunch/dinner hours, but it's worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

Cheaper than some of my other fav sushi places in the area, for pretty good food. I like how small the place is, and it's never too busy. The food quality isn't exactly 5 star, but it's a good option when you're looking for a casual sushi lunch/dinner. Service isn't their strong suit (mostly forgetful about bringing food and refilling drinks) but they've never been rude or uninviting. As mentioned above, they food is definitely made to order, but they take come short cuts. For example, the California rolls are more imitation crab than avocado. I'm also a fan of cucumber in the roll, which they don't add. Check this place out if you need a low key sushi option. read more

We took my daughter away from Walter Reed National Medical Center for lunch with us and her son who we've been babysitting while she was in Afghanistan. For anyone who works either at NIH or the military medical center or ambulatory patients in the wounded warrior unit at Bethesda, Maki Maki is extremely convenient 5-10 minute walk and there is a municipal parking lot right across the street which is free on weekends. The sushi and bento boxes were really really good, and the presentations absolutely beautiful (see photos). We picked sushi because my 4y/o grandson asked to try it for lunch. And you can see in the photos he used chopsticks just like us. Our waiter was friendly and funny... No hilarious is a better word! He provided quick friendly service, and explained the menu. The food was delightfully delicious. I love hot tea at Chinese restaurants do I thought why not with Japanese sushi house too, but the green tea had a seaweed taste that I'm not accustomed to. So I don't think I would order the tea again even though it seemed very popular with the other patrons. They even have lunch specials on the weekends which is usually unheard of at Chinese restaurants. This is definitely a place I would frequent if I lived nearby. If time allows the next time I'm at the military medical center I will stop for lunch. read more

Maki Maki's one of those places that you just drive by and not realize it's there until someone points it out....well I'm pointing it out now to all you yelpers out there who like sushi. This place is small, cozy, cute, and best of all...it's cheap! Lunch specials (includes weeneds) is 2 rolls for 6 dollars!! Yea you heard me right...2 rolls for 6 dollars!!! They don't skimp out on the size or the amount of fish either. I know that I order 2 rolls and a miso soup and I'm barely making it out of my meal alive. The other awesome thing about this place is their Salmon Combo (not sure if this is the exact name of the dish). Essentially it's salmon nigiri and salmon sashimi for 17 bucks. The salmon slice they provide you is pretty fresh and it's falling off the rice because the size of the fish overwhelms the rice! OM NOM NOM NOM So now you know it's cheap and it's good...how about service? Service is hit or miss. Sometimes they are extremely fast and efficient and then there are the times where there can be no one in the restaurant and you're waiting for a while. Overall I think it's fine and really doesn't have any impact to my sushi experience. While the customer service isn't the greatest (they are slow and don't look at you), the sweet potato roll in brown rice is one of the best vegetarian rolls I've had. The sushi here is fresh and trumps Hanaro and Taku Sushi. The atmosphere is lackluster with minimal design and I'm not sure when the front door will be ever fixed. If the customer service and ambiance were improved, then I would give the restaurant 5 stars. read more
