I returned recently to Maki Bar for lunch and I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a bento box with green tea and my friend ordered the lunch maki sushi special. Both were incredible for the price. We were quickly served and we didn't feel rushed. It was a great stop before shopping at Trader Joe's. I would definitely return for the lunch. read more

Neighborhood sushi joint that is absolutely solid. I've been here 4-5 times and the staff is friendly and the food is consistent. I will come again. Prices are as expected. In all the world of sushi places, I consider this place to hold it's own. Is it the best sushi that I've ever had? No. Is it the worst sushi that I've ever had? No. It's decent and sometimes, that is all you're looking for. We arrived late in the evening and the place was practically empty, so grabbing a table was quick and we were promptly served. This is one of the few places in the DC/Chevy Chase area witj raw shrimp (aba ebi) & they even fry & serve the whole head when you order it. My wife had heard about this place so we decided to check it out on a Friday night. We ordered the Fugi Mountain, Lasagna Maki, Love At First Site, and the Happy Salmon. All of the choices were absolutely delicious. Parking is hard to find in Bethesda and The Maki Bar is located in an area with free parking! I am really not a fan of leaving bad reviews but if you are a true lover of sushi than this is not the place for you. When my husband and I ate there we were the only people in the restaurant which is fine with us but we had to wait almost five minutes before we were given a menu. While we looked over the menu, no one offered us drinks or checked to see if we had any questions. When it was time to order, almost 15 minutes into being there, I actually had to get up to get our server. At the end of the meal, my husband had to get up to get her to bring us the bill. Both my husband and I knew we were off to a bad start when we got our appetizers - miso soup and shrimp tempura. The soup was so bad that neither of us could even finish it. The shrimp tempura resembled a corn dog and was not lightly battered as the menu suggested. The real kicker was the sushi. In my opinion, the tuna in a tuna roll should not be bright pink. Additionally, I love Unagi (fish egg) which we ordered and it was beyond words bad. It tasted as if it was going bad and it really solidified my negative opinion of the place. There is always a chance that was an off-night but there are so many other great sushi places out there that I probably won't be giving it a second chance. read more

Disappointed Walter reed patient. My husband drove down to pick up a called in take away order (he's not a sushi guy). Got back to my room, no wasabi ginger or soy...hard to enjoy my tuna rolls without the condiments. I called back to let them know of the mistake and she was more than happy to send the delivery guy out to rectify the issue but I would have had to meet them at the gate, I am in a hospital gown unable to walk at all. This review is on service rather than food. Their online menu as of 2/4/22 was out of date. Many of their items are more expensive now. I ordered a party platter and rolls and it came out higher than what I was expecting. The person on the phone was very nice but said I was looking at the old menu and they had new prices. Decent food. I ordered shrimp Shumai, the fried monster, and nigiri. It was clean and decent. I ordered during lunch time and it was a fair amount of people in the small space but not overcrowded. The sushi is fresh and tasty so for that I give a solid 4 stars. I had the shrimp avocado and California rolls so it was pretty standard not too fancy. The reason I didn't give five stars is because of the lack of sesame seeds on the rolls and it was just something missing can't put my finger on it. All in all I am satisfied with my meal. I just know of better sushi places but again this is a solid place so I will come back when I am in the mood for sushi. Oh by the way the service was fast and the pricing was decent. This is our go to sushi spot in the area. We love the bang bang chicken which is crispy and served with spicy mayo. The lasagna sushi roll is our favorite. I am glad that Bethesda still has some places to eat that aren't crowded but serve delicious food. Maki Bar is a little gem tucked into the corner of the Trader Joe's and Target shopping plaza. Even with only ~10 tables, somehow this restaurant has remained on the down-low so you probably won't have to wait to be seated. Don't let the lack of crowds fool you, the food and the service are great! There is the standard sushi menu plus a specials board with some interesting choices. I saw poke on this menu long before the current craze hit this area. Everything I have had at Maki Bar was fresh and artfully prepared. The servers and sushi chefs are super friendly. The décor is very cute, with posters of cats on the walls and a clock with sushi instead of numbers. This is the first place I think of when in Bethesda with a sushi craving. You can park in the garage, metered street parking, or a paid public lot one block away. P.S. I stumbled upon this restaurant as I was carrying far-too-heavy-for-me-to-manage Trader Joe's grocery bag. Yep, it's the Japanese restaurant in that same complex below the grocery store. I've dined at the store and also gotten carry-out and would recommend both! The store is small, but still plenty of seating space and very clean. Food and service are great! I really liked their shrimp shumai and tempura udon noodle soup - shrimp tempura and veggies went hand in hand with the udon noodles and savory broth. I don't think you can go wrong with any their maki's (I enjoyed their red dragon and dragon maki). Decent sushi walking distance from my office. Came in for lunch on a Wednesday with few co workers and ordered salad, different maki rolls. When we came in, the restaurant was EMPTY and no one greeted us so I thought they were closed but it was just the sushi chefs staring at us lol. We got seated and studied the menu. We actually almost missed the lunch specials since that was the very last page on the menu. The maki rolls were mediocre. The actual fish pieces were kind of small and not very fresh. My 1st and last time here. I ordered the chicken teriyaki lunch box. I couldn't eat the chicken. It was mushy. Like undercooked. There was no texture to the outside other than mush. The sauce wasn't good either. The sushi is okay. I told the waitress the chicken was bad but they didn't offer to do anything about it. I took my mother there for lunch based on great reviews and the proximity to our favorite sushi restaurant, Tako Grill, which was not open for lunch. We were the first ones to arrive, and were greeting in a lukewarm fashion. One of the sushi cooks looked up and gave us a lame "hi." Even though the enthusiastic welcome of "Irashai!" at most sushi places may seem contrived, it would have been far better than our reception. So much for first impressions. My mother ordered chirashi, and I had tempura udon. Both were edible, but lacking in presentation and taste. The chirashi was a small mound of sushi rice, draped with long thin pieces of sashimi. Impossible to eat in one bite, and impossible to cut apart with chopsticks. The udon broth tasted more of soy sauce than anything else. There was a scant portion of noodles. The vegetable assortment of whole mushrooms, baby bok choy, carrots was good, except the carrots were barely cooked. The tempura shrimp did not have the crisp flaky tempura batter, they were more like the corn dogs mentioned in another review. We had pan fried shrimp shumai served with a neon orange chili sauce. They were ok when piping hot, but became damp and gluey at room temperature. Our server promptly brought us the check once she had cleared our plates. Would have been nice to ask us if we cared for anything else? Good points: it was cheap, and there's parking. We will stick with Tako Grill from now on. read more

It's pity that the atmosphere and staff are nice, but crucially food is not that "level." The Chirashi is too faaaaaar from real Chirashi-zushi, and all salad dressings are too sweet. Tonkatshu is too hard and dry (can't call it as real Japanese Tobkatsu). Really unfortunate. The cooks seem to have never eaten "good" Japanese food. Hope they can improve the food asap. read more
