The interior is very small and cozy, so they take your name and phone number upon entry and then call you once a table is ready. Not to worry, the turn around time is surprisingly quick. The concept for the ramen, is you choose your meat, and then your base/soup. I know Maki is tirrrrrreeeeed of seeing my face, but the ramen is so good I cannot stay away! Maki is a casual ramen spot that I have visited several times, and it has become one of my go-to places anytime I'm in MD. The restaurant is on the smaller side, which gives it a comfortable feel, but it also means it can fill up quickly. Lunch times are pretty light and I am able to be seated quickly; however, during my evening visits I have waited in line. If you are planning to come during a busy time, I recommend making a reservation. The only other con I have for Maki is its parking. Parking can be a challenge here. There are only a few spaces right in front of the restaurant, and they are pretty tight and usually taken, so you may need to park by the other nearby shops and walk over. That's where the cons stop though. Maki otherwise is a gem with great ramen that keeps me coming back. I always order the chicken katsu spicy miso ramen, and it is consistently delicious with flavorful broth and perfectly cooked chicken. I love the contrast of the breaded chicken with the broth and I have yet to find this perfect combo elsewhere. I'm a creature of habit so unfortunately I haven't tried much in their menu, but in addition to a wide menu of ramen and noodles, they also have a fresh sushi bar that looks great, although I have not tried the sushi yet. On top of the great food, the staff is always friendly and attentive, which makes every visit so nice. The overall vibe of the restaurant is super relaxed, and it is a great place for a quick lunch or a casual dinner with a friend. If you are in the Rockville area and craving a comforting bowl of ramen with great service, Maki is definitely worth a visit. I know I will keep going back. read more

Went here for the first time ever. I honestly have never heard of the place until my friend wanted to try it. I've been in this little strip before for other things but never noticed Maki. I will say parking is a little tight but that's just the little strip it's located on so just be careful parking and pulling in and out. We got there and there were people sitting in every seat. Very quickly and waitress handed us a menu. To my surprise, she said it'd be a five minute wait for 6 of us and she was pretty accurate. They knew which tables were leaving and able to accurately predict. We were seated after around 5-10 minutes. The harder part was the ordering. The ordering system is online so we had to take a phone a pass it around. I personally did not like this system. Me and my friends are pretty young and tech savvy but the system kept adding extra than what we originally put. We ended up with 3 extra rolls that we didn't want. Of course we paid for it but it was honestly too much food for us. I recommend triple checking your order and being weary of that. We actually caught it the first time when it inputed 6 of one roll but missed the others. Just be careful of that. The food itself was actually great. My favorite was the spicy shrimp tempura roll but my friends also loved the yellowtail. The food was delicious and filled us up. I would say I got the shrimp tempura as an appetizer and it was a little bready but the tempura sauce helped with that. It was consistently busy while we were there but service was good. The one thing I didn't like is that they brought the food out as they made it. Typically we wait until everyone has their food but it was a little hard being served that way. This is one of the places that kept me reliably and tastily fed throughout the pandemic, thank goodness! I'd only been in myself one time to get something to go until recently when I finally had my first sit-down meal there -- very nice! Friendly, efficient service was followed by a meal worthy of the International Ninja Day I went there to celebrate, ha ha! My #1 fave thing here is my go-to tofu katsu curry. Stopped by for a quick meal, and surprised the wait was short and it wasn't as crowded, as they usually are. Parking out front is convenient, as there are many parking spaces in this strip mall. We had sushi both rolls and sashimi, and they were both delicious. The rock shrimp and octopus appetizer was equally as good. The ramen with the soy base was a bit too salty for me, and had to add some water, this was the only dish that was not quite on point. Overall the service was excellent and I can let the ramen slide, as the food arrived quickly and I enjoyed the meal mostly. Maki has some competition now with many newer ramen restaurants, they are definitely on top with many choices and flavors, they may need to add some more specials or seasonal dishes to mix things up a bit to stay on top. read more

We several orders of Gyoza pan seared pork & chicken dumplings & gyoza sauce. We order several plates including: Sashimi regular which 12 pieces selected sashimi (tuna, salmon & miso soup, koshihikari sushi rice; Salmon Special 5 pieces salmon sashimi, 1 salmon & avocado roll, 1 crunchy spicy salmon hand roll, miso soup & edamame. I ordered Sake nigiri and it was fresh, beautiful and delicious! We finished our Christmas Eve dinner with dango sweet dumpling skewers made from "mochiko" rice flour. Yum! As a native Washingtonian growing up in the 70s in Rockville, Maryland we rarely had sushi with our immediate family of nine. For the broth, I opted for the tori shoyu ramen which was a nice balance for the spicy meat. Originally, I was going to get the volcano but the server said it was going to be spicy, but I would try that next time. In addition to the ramen, I tried the spicy salmon roll + chicken kaarage. I could've done without both of these items - 3.5/5. The chicken didn't have the same crispy crust as I am accustomed to and the sushi was just ok. This is a walk in family friendly space. 4.4 stars The volcano ramen is absolutely amazing. The broth is packed with flavor and has enough thickness to it and the egg is good as well. The bulgogi is amazing, bulgogi already tastes amazing but they added some spice to it to take it to another level. Probably the best non-Tsukemen bowl of ramen you'll find in the dmv. Things to bring to Maki; 1) Appetite and 2) Patience. The first is obvious. Start with a wide offering of sushi, sashimi, buns, gyoza. We had the vegetable gyoza and beef brisket buns. Spicy sauce made the buns really pop! then for a main course there is Ramen, Udon and Donburi, along with of course, sushi and sashimi options. Our table opted for a range of Ramen and Udon from Chicken Tonkatsu to Shrimp to Veggie. All can be made with varying degrees of heat - and all were happy with the results. Matcha Crepe Cake and Mochi ice cream rounded out the offerings as well as cutting some of the heat from the spice - which you can add at your table. Service is attentive, but not overbearing. Now for the patience part. The place is "small". While it lends to a "cozy" atmosphere, it means a 20-25 minute wait for a party of 4 or more at 6 on a Saturday. And as you read from many of the other reviews, the food is so good there is always a line and NO RESERVATIONS - only a sign up sheet. Also, plan on finding a place somewhere along the narrow strip mall to park, as spaces are at a premium. But it is worth the wait and the (minor) parking inconvenience to immerse yourself in the wonderful food of Maki. read more

I was quite surprised with all the high rating.i had the tonkatsu ramen and I felt it was very soy sauce tasting and super salty, there were also a lot of noodles in my bowl which I'm not used to but it was hard to finish. Sushi is okay- I got the volcano roll and it had a lot of creaminess & filler- you wouldn't be able to tell what kind of fish you were eating and it felt more centered around the sauce than any fish flavor. It was a very pleasant lunch for my family on a Saturday, the place was not too busy and parking was easy. Due to the air pressure in the facility, the only issue that arises is the difficulty opening the door due to the air pressure. As a customer, I found the service to be excellent and fast. Everything we ordered was delivered in a quick and efficient manner, and we are very pleased with it. The volcano ramen that I had with spicy bulgogi meat was amazing and I highly recommend it if you like spicy food. The seafood ramen that my wife ordered was also excellent, and she thought it was delicious as well. Everything we have ordered so far was fresh and delicious. Services have been good, despite they are almost always busy, but services were always efficient. This place is such a great find after running nearby errands. Parking is right in-front of the restaurant which is located in a strip mall. We came on a Friday about 11:35am and it wasn't busy yet, but got busier as lunchtime settled in. We ordered salmon rolls & gyoza for appetizers. The salmon rolls was good, the rice was freshly made and a little warm - like eating a soft pillow. Yum. The gyoza was delicious! Probably one of my top 5 as far a flavor goes. Lightly crispy on one side & well cooked. The tonkatsu ramen was the daily special and the ramen noodles had a perfect (imho) chewy texture and the tonkatsu broth was a little creamy. The egg had a nice soft yolk - I want another bowl as I write this!! The pork cutlet was tender and crispy - had to box some of it home, we were so full! I wish I lived closer to this place. I've driven past Maki countless amount of times but I had never heard anything about it until a friend suggested we eat here for lunch. I was surprised to see how busy and packed the restaurant was -- I went on a Sunday afternoon, around 12:30pm. The space is quite small but they really maximized the space to fit as many tables as possible. Service was great-- we were checked on frequently and every person was kind and patient with answering my questions. Parking is free, but it is very limited (if you've been here, you know). There is additonal parking behind the building, but it is not a lot. I only had the miso soup, veggie gyoza and Red Dragon roll. Can't go wrong with the miso soup, and I was surprised at how big the Red Dragon roll was! It was really filling even though I only ate the one roll. The veggie gyoza was good but I wouldn't get it again; it honestly tasted like the frozen gyoza I buy from Hmart, which isn't a bad thing. After looking at the pictures and reading the reviews-- plus after seeing how busy it was, I want to go back to try other dishes. Japanese cuisine is not my favorite, but I do get a craving for it once in awhile. I docked a star only because the meal I had wasn't anything spectacular. read more

This is a nice small restaurant. We came at 3:30 for a late lunch. We missed the weekday lunch specials that ended at 3 pm. You may order on your cell phone with the scan code on your table, or wait staff will come over. We tried the chicken katsu donburi rice bowl for $13.95. This came with miso soup and salad. Everything tasted good. Portions were not large, but enough to make you full. Service was attentive. The wait staff took our dishes away promptly. I would recommend coming here on a weekday between 3-5 pm because it may get really crowded later with the dinner crowd. read more

Their ramen is amazing!!!! This is probably some of the best ramen I've ever had. The base was perfectly flavored, the egg was very yummy, the corn was sweet, the udon noodles were delicious. The chicken katsu came on the side and it was also really good and came with a delicious katsu sauce. Overall, the food was absolutely amazing. As for the service, we were seated quickly and given water. You order your food by scanning a barcode and ordering online. Our food came out super quickly and servers kept checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed which was super nice. Great service for sure. Mine was gone in 3 bites. Next, my daughter in law got the tongatsu ramen with pork belly as her protein. Of course, there is a generous portion of noodles, soft egg, veggies, and a lot of pork belly. She loved her ramen. My son and I ordered the shoyu ramen with beef brisket,as our protein. The broth was rich and delicious. The brisket was tender and had an umami taste. The portion size was large and it lasted 2 meals for me. Service was easy and pleasant. I phoned my order in by phone and it was ready when I got there. Everything was correct on my order and we were very pleased. The service is fine, you typically order off their online menu that they have a QR code on their tables, they can take your order but I believe this is the preferred method. Only one phone can be used per table. I got the salmon belly sashimi, thought it was pretty tasty it was only 2 pcs. I got their kamikaze roll, thought it was pretty tasty too. I really enjoyed their sushi here way more than their ramen. Their buns are tasty too I get the chashu bun with the spicy mayo on the side.
