Stopped here on a Saturday night for dinner while in the area. Smaller place in a townhouse community. **PRO TIP** Park in lot behind business rather than fight for street parking out front. There is a backdoor to enter from here. It is a smaller place, so seating could be tough, but we had reservations. Ordered a round of buns and sushi to start, and with a persistent cough, also had hot tea. The staff is very good - refilling tea regularly and checking in on us. Very friendly as well. I ordered the Shoyu Ramen, which was very flavorful. I should have ordered an extra side of noodles, but it was good overall. good flavors. Went here for dinner with my brother and it was pretty good overall. As far as I'm concerned, it felt authentic--from the flavors to the vibe. The sushi was solid, and I definitely over-ordered (classic mistake), but no regrets. The server was friendly, and even though the place was rotatingly packed, the service didn't suffer. It's a little hole-in-the-wall kind of spot, especially tucked into the ant hill that is the DMV area, where there are endless food options. That said, this one's worth a try. Nishiki is located in a more hidden part of Kentlands, and interestingly across from another sushi restaurant. I stopped in on a rainy day and was impressed by their numerous sushi roll options and ramen bowls. As someone who doesn't eat seafood, I was excited to see that they offer sweet potato rolls, avocado rolls, and other veggie options! I had a fine experience at Nishiki Ramen. I was eager to try their vegetable ramen and sadly learned their noodles contain egg. While I was hopeful to enjoy a vegan ramen, the sushi lunch special was a solid consolation prize. The miso soup was fantastic and their variety of vegan sushi rolls was impressive. I tried their tofu skin roll as well as their mango avocado roll. The layer of rice on the outside of the rolls is pretty thin. If I had known that I would have ordered a third roll. I was not anywhere near full from only 2 rolls and miso soup. I think considering that the sushi pricing is a little high in comparison to other restaurants. I do think the quality of the roll overall is higher than places that offer a similar thing at a lower price. So if you don't mind splurging for one or two more rolls than you normally get, I think Nishiki is worth visiting. I hope Nishiki can source a vegan ramen noodle in the future. If they had a vegan ramen on the menu I would definitely be giving this business 5 stars. As of now their sushi menu was nice and I would go back if I was craving only sushi. read more

Very disappointing service. I personally cannot comment on the food, because it was never served. My family says the tonkatsu ramen was so-so. When I placed the order, I requested 2 rolls to be served as an appetizer and then ramen plus other items to be served as the entree. The order was repeated back to me exactly the way I requested. At some point, the ramen showed up for my kids. My food was never brought out, legit they both ate their ramen in their entirety...nothing was ever brought for me. The server must have passed my table 20+ times while I waited, she never stopped to as if "everything was ok" with the ramen the kids received. So disappointed. read more

Very solid lunch menu. I particularly appreciated that they don't overload their rolls with rice. I give bonus points for using the same soy sauce we use at home (Yamasa). The pan fried gyoza showcased properly thin skins, well seasoned pork, and a delicious dipping sauce that leaned into a sweetness that complimented the salty umami of the pork. The restaurant is situated in a very pedestrian friendly open shopping plaza in the Kentlands area. Parking is available around the rear if you can't find street side openings. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. In keeping with an Izakaya theme, the narrow galley design makes for cozy seating. The kitchen processed orders promptly and service was friendly, efficient, and polite. Bonus points - I did not even need to remind the kitchen of our To Go order, which they had ready as our in restaurant meal ended. I highly recommend Nishiki. Sushi well my friends! read more

Ramen was mid. Majority of ramen shops are not owned by Japanese folks - not saying that's a bad thing because some Thai-owned or Chinese-owned ramen is really good. In this case, this Chinese-owned ramen shop missed the mark. You can tell there weren't layers to the broth (no dashi or foundation in flavor). I also ordered their Tan Tan ramen which ended up being dry style noodle with no broth. The menu does not state it is a mazeman or dry-style at all... it just says ramen. Lucky for them, their dry style noodle was BETTER than the ramen. For that reason, I did not complain. I also tried the sushi; also mid. If your dry style noodles is better than your ramen and sushi then it may be time to go back to the drawing board. And it's "Tonkotsu ramen" not "Tonkatsu ramen" read more

a great local gem! i personally really enjoyed my rolls and salad! i love how they plate them so beautifully - it's a nice touch! none of my food had raw fish, but my sushi-connoisseur boyfriend said his tuna wasn't the besttttt quality. i mean, the prices are fantastic, but there's gotta be a catch somewhere, right? that being said, he did devour every last bite. our service was great and quick. they gave us a free piece of green tea cheesecake for a birthday in our party. the restaurant itself is fairly small but there are a couple of outdoor tables as well -- only ~20 tables total though. cute authentic vibes in there. parallel parking on the street or there's a lot around the corner. i would go back but not obsessed! read more

Great local spot. It was pretty busy on a Thursday night. But we were able to still grab a table to sit outdoors. Food came out hot or cold as appropriate! Nothing was room temperature, so I appreciate that they didn't get left on the counter for long after preparation. The noodles were springy and soup not too salty. Fish was fresh, but the rice had a tad bit more vinegar than I'm used to. Overall, it was a great time by our family, and the little one enjoyed the avocado rolls, too! Staff was friendly and attentive, and we were served our food pretty quickly. I like that they don't overcrowd the space with a bunch of tables considering the smaller size of the restaurant. It was pretty comfortable where we sat. I had the Tan Tan Ramen, which was fine. For those unsure of what this ramen is, my understanding is that it's a combo of dan dan noodles (dry noodle) and ramen (noodle soup). It typically has (dan dan recipe's) minced pork cooked with spices/chili, sesame paste, peanuts / paste, and a sauce, and (ramen noodle soup's) broth, of course with veggies and noodles. The noodles were a good texture and I liked how chewy they were, but the dish was a miss for me overall. Maybe it was the sauce for the ground pork that was lacking or that the shio soup was too salty for my preference. I'm glad I tried the soup before adding it in; I ended up not having much of it at all. Wouldn't mind coming back to try other dishes, but would probably go elsewhere for ramen. read more

My family really likes the ramen here. When I came we got Tonkatsu and Shoyu ramen and Takoyaki. The ramen were some of the best I've had in the area. The broth is rich and not overly salty. They don't skimp on the topping either. They actually give you a whole egg! It is obvious that they precooked the egg and then added it into the ramen just before serving as it is colder than the rest. But the egg is nicely soft-boiled and well seasoned. The noodles are clearly bought prepackaged and not made fresh. But other than that, it is quite good for $13.50. The takoyaki presentation was very nice (see pics). But the taste is quite there. It tasted by doughy. A lot of starch, very little octopus. You do get 6 balls for the price of $7.95 when I went in April 2022. I don't think I would personally get it again. Didn't try the sushi, but I did see that the presentation is very good. I think my family did say this not really the place to get sushi though. It is located in Kentlands so plenty of parking in the shared lot. The back is actually facing the lot but you can still enter the restaurant that way. The restaurant itself has very limited seating. I get the Philly roll, the California roll and the Volcano roll. The Volcano roll is FIRE!!! The service is always on point; very polite and genuinely sweet. The restaurant itself is gorgeous. This review is gonna be pretty hard to write... mainly cause the woman who was at the carryout counter was so incredibly nice and friendly when I went to pick it up... but after just having had a number of dishes from Nishiki... I just can't personally recommend it for the food as the quality I find significantly lacking. What I ordered: 1. Chicken katsu shoyu ramen 2. California roll lunch special 3. Takoyaki 4. Avocado salad 1. The chicken katsu was seemingly not fresh. The breading fell off of most of the chicken when I ate it, and the fry on it just tasted a bit old. The ramen itself was painfully one dimensional. The toppings were reasonably fresh, but it just lacked depth, seasoning, and interest. The noodles were also lackluster and I would think they are not made in house. 2. I'm someone who loves the california rolls with shredded crab meat mixed with a little Japanese mayo. And before I order them anywhere, I'll check the pictures on Yelp to make sure they are the shredded version. I guess for the lunch special they just use the crab stick... which sucked for me. But the rolls were about the width of a roll of nickels. They were literally like bottle cap thickness and they were not rolled very well. If I only ordered this lunch special, I 100 percent would have not been full from it. 3. The takoyaki I would surmise was frozen and heated up. The octopus inside was very chewy. The sauces on top were good, and altogether they wern't terribly offensive... but they were far from the best takoyaki I've ever had. To follow suit with the California rolls, they were very small. Maybe the size of a pinball from a pinball machine. 4. The avocado salad had a decent about of thinly sliced avocado on top but it was below that I found the lettuce was arugula. Definitely not my favorite, and I wish they would have mentioned that on the menu. The dressing was also so sparse on the salad that I felt like I was getting lots of bites with no dressing. That coupled with it being arugula... I just stopped eating it. It was also small. To me this restaurant is just really lacking from a quality standpoint and portion size was really lacking too. I'm pretty convinced that most of what I ordered was not made in house. If it was... I'd be very surprised. I could see the chicken katsu maybe being made in house... but if it was... I would bet on it not having been made today. Definitely feels like I wasted money and a meal out unfortunately. Ya know... this is the first time in a long time that this is happened. Usually, Yelp doesn't lead me astray. I'm honestly really surprised that Nishiki has 4 stars as it stands. I would not return because I simply would not reorder anything that I had today... and that convinces me that I probably won't find much luck elsewhere on the menu. I hope that they improve the quality of what they're delivering. BTW- I had no idea that this is now in the old Yoyogi spot. And Yoyogi has moved down the street into the little triangle behind the pergola/ little village square space. This is how I personally rate restaurants to give you some insight on why I'm giving Nishiki 2 stars: 1 Star: The experience and product was awful AND they offended me in some sort of way. 2 Stars: The experience or product was so lacking that I personally can't recommend you to go there. 3 Stars: Either the experience or product suffered. But one could make up for the other. Recommended with reservations. 4 Stars: Both the experience and product are definitely worth a visit 5 Stars: Drop everything you're doing and go there immediately I really do hope that they improve, cause like I said, the woman at the takeout counter seems very friendly and I never root against any local businesses. read more

I got the eel avocado, spicy salmon crunch roll and spicy shrimp crunch roll. The place has a really cute interior and the staff are friendly. The rolls were a bit smaller than what I'm used to, but given the price for the combo, I was still pretty satisfied. We still had enough extra to bring home.
